This article has been retracted at the request of the Series Editor, Professor Guy B. Marin (Ghent University, Belgium). The authors have been found to have plagiarized from “Gray, W.G., A. Leijnse, R.L. Kolar, and C.A. Blain, Mathematical Tools for Changing Spatial Scales in the Analysis of Physical Systems, CRC Press, Boca Raton (1993)” and “Miller, C.T., and W.G. Gray, Thermodynamically constrained averaging theory approach for modeling flow and transport phenomena in porous medium systems: 2. Foundation, Adv. Water Resour. , 28 (2005) 181–202.”. While the authors have cited the publications in question, the degree to which they have directly reproduced text and figures has been found to be inappropriate and insufficient acknowledgment has been given to the original sources. One of the conditions of submission of a paper for publication is that authors declare explicitly that their work is original and has not appeared in a publication elsewhere. Re-use of any data should be appropriately cited. As such this article represents a severe abuse of the scientific publishing system. The scientific community takes a very strong view on this matter and we apologize to readers of the journal that this was not detected during the submission process.
