Abstract:Extruded polymeric HVDC cables have drawn great attention in modern power systems. This paper reviews the history and development of the polymeric HVDC cables and summarizes the key technical problems in extruded HVDC cables. It is pointed out that two key issues should be solved. One is the electric field inversion within HVDC cable insulation which is caused by the temperature and electric field dependent DC volume resistivity of the polymeric insulation materials. The other is the space charge behavior under multi-fields coupling, including charge injection, transportation, accumulation and dissipation characteristics. The following aspects need to be particularly concerned in the future: the interaction between temperature, electric field, space charge and DC volume resistivity under multi-fields coupling; mechanisms of nanoparticles doping on enhancing the properties of polymeric insulation material; the long-term operation characteristics of nanodielectrics; collaborative optimal regulation methods and theories on the properties of polymeric insulation material; and recyclable insulation materials for future HVDC cables.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of long-length and large-capacity power transmission around the world, the $\pm 525$ kV high voltage direct current (HVDC) Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) cable system has been widely recognized as the potential technology for power transmission. To further enhance the HVDC cable transmission capacity at a more economical level, the high conductor operation temperature is indispensable. However, higher temperature is more dangerous for XLPE cable insulation especially under HVDC stress. Therefore, it is recommended by Cigre TB 852 [1] that the high temperature performance of insulation material should be examined. Various dielectric insulation tests at different temperatures are performed on sliced XLPE samples from real HVDC cable. The testing results are carefully analyzed and can provide guidance for the efficient design of insulation system for high temperature $\pm 525\text{kV}$ HVDC cable system applications.

Abstract:Degassing treatment is critical to remove cross-linking by-products in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints and prevent early insulation deterioration. In this article, 500-kV high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cable factory joint samples were prepared, and the physicochemical and temperature-dependent electrical properties of the samples under different degassing times were investigated. The results show that prolonged degassing treatment increases the crystallinity and reduces the tensile properties of the XLPE samples. The samples without degassing have visible micropores near the interface, and these micropores can be eliminated after a longer degassing time. In addition, degassing treatment can reduce the current density, increase the threshold field strength, and enhance the breakdown strength of the samples. A significant negative charge accumulation appears at the interface of the sample without degassing, which dramatically distorts the electric field. Long-term degassing treatment can improve this phenomenon, and the accumulated charge at the interface at elevated temperatures is significantly reduced. Furthermore, a model of the molecular chain microstructure at the interface before and after degassing is proposed. The molecular chain’s energy band structure and electron cloud distribution at the interface are analyzed based on quantum chemical calculation. It is found that cable makers can improve the insulation properties of cable factory joints by appropriately extending the degassing time to avoid interface deterioration.
Electrical Insulation Properties of Material Interfaces in HVDC Cable Factory Joint

Abstract:The insulation characteristics of HVDC cable factory joint are essential for the stable and efficient operation of power system. This paper analyzes the electric properties of materials interface in high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable factory joint. 500 kV XLPE pellets were used to prepare disc-shaped films by hot pressing. Then, 80, 400, 1000 and 2000 grit mesh sandpapers are used to polish the surface of the degassed film, respectively. Finally, XLPE pellets are hot pressed on the polished surface to produce the samples. Space charge distributions, electrical conductivity and DC breakdown strength of XLPE samples with different roughness were studied. The results show an homo charge accumulation near both electrodes with the different interface roughness. Furthermore, the samples of the interface polished by 1000 grit mesh show the largest electrical conductivity. Moreover, its space charge densities, electric field distortion and breakdown strength are the smallest among all the samples. It can be found that there may be a minimum breakdown strength and space charge accumulation between the grit mesh of 400 and 2000. Moreover, the space charge accumulation cannot be completely suppressed with the increase of interface smoothness. It can be inferred that ultra-smooth interface contributes to increase the breakdown strength of the samples.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the microstructure and electrical insulation characteristics at the interface of 500 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable factory joints for extra high voltage direct current (EHVDC) application. The interface between two layers was polished by different grit sandpapers (80, 400, 1000, 2000, and 0000 (unpolished)). The samples (#1000) polished by 1000 grit mesh at the interface were degassed at 70 degrees C for 0, 12, 36, 90, and 200 h, respectively. Physico-chemical and electrical experiments were performed on the prepared test samples. It is found that increasing the number of sandpaper grit meshes reduces the average lamellae thickness at the interface and increases the crystallinity. Moreover, microporous defects are observed at the interface. The parameters viz elongation at break, current density, and the number of microporous defects increase initially and then decrease. However, the space charge accumulation, threshold electric field strength, and DC breakdown decrease initially and then increase. Notably, the #1000 roughness is a turning point. On the other side, degassing treatment promotes the orderly folding and recrystallization of the molecular chains arranged the amorphous region and significantly reduces the microporous defects at the interface. The mechanical properties are affected to a certain extent. The improved microstructure reduces the space charge accumulation and the current density of the sample, and increases the DC breakdown strength. An interfacial microscopic model and a charge transport model are proposed to analyze the mechanism of material properties under different roughnesses and electric fields. The results indicate that the ultra-smooth interface and degassing treatment strengthen the molecular chain linking at the interface. Moreover, they significantly reduce the microporous defects at the interface and improve the insulation properties of the factory joint. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The high-temperature superconducting (HTS) ac and dc cables are gradually finding their way toward commercialization due to their ability to transfer bulk electric power with negligible dielectric loss. In this context, this article critically reviews the different aspects of HTS cables used in various applications and related accessories. The operational, laboratory-scale, and prototype HTS cable projects are discussed in detail. Different dielectrics, electrical insulations, superconductors, cooling systems, cryogens, and upcoming projects of HTS cables are reviewed. The underlying challenges and future directions in ac and dc cables, electric aircraft and ships, associated costs, cryogenic insulation materials, cooling technologies, superconductors, and electrical insulations of HTS cables are discussed in detail. The space charge performance of presently used polypropylene laminated paper insulation and future insulation, i.e., Kapton material, is experimentally analyzed, to show the future challenges in the insulation design. The technology readiness level, market trends, and relevant test standards are explored. The research and market trends suggest that HTS cables can replace conventional transmission methods. However, their consistent growth and adaptation of HTS cables will depend on the design of cryocoolers, raw material cost of superconductors, and large-scale production.

Abstract:High-voltage DC (HVDC) power transmission plays a key role in the global power grid today and will continue to play a key role in the future, particularly for high-voltage, large-capacity, long-distance power transmission and regional power grid interconnection [1]. HVDC was first developed in the 1930s as a reliable technology that can effectively convert AC electricity produced at the point of generation to DC electricity for transmission. In 1954 the world's first commercial HVDC project connected the Swedish mainland and the Island of Gotland with a ±100 kV mass-impregnated cable with a power rating of 20 MW [2], [3]. Abstract:With the development of modern power systems, especially that of the global energy internet, high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) cable power transmission will play an important role in the future. The key problem of HVDC cable power transmission is the need for novel cable insulation materials that have high performance, recyclability, and higher working temperature to replace traditional crosslinked polyethylene. This paper investigates the thermal and electrical properties of polypropylene (PP)/Al2O3 nanocomposites as a potential recyclable HVDC cable insulation material. The developed nanocomposites exhibit excellent thermal and electrical properties with the introduction of Al2O3 nanoparticles. Particularly, the space charge accumulation is greatly suppressed.

Abstract:High‐voltage DC (HVDC) cables show more efficiency than high‐voltage AC cables over the long distance power transmission and have attracted significant attention recently due to rapid developments in off‐shore wind farm. Polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP) insulation based HVDC cables have provided a reliable operation for many years and are the highest voltage level in operation at the moment. In this study, the authors intend to understand the electrical performance of PPLP insulation system by examining space charge in detail, especially at the interfaces. It has been found that the interface between polypropylene and Kraft paper acts as trap for charge carriers, resulting in an optimal electric field distribution in PPLP insulation system. The optimal electric field distribution enhances overall electrical performance of PPLP insulation, including higher dc breakdown strength and lower electrical conductivity.

Abstract:Polypropylene (PP)-based recyclable materials have attracted tremendous interest for HVDC cable insulation application due to their superior electrical properties, e.g., high thermal stability and superior recyclability. Compared with crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE), PP-based materials exhibit the advantages of not only higher working temperature but also facile and efficient cable manufacturing with reduced cost, which are highly desired in HVDC cable manufacturing. Considering their promising advantages, PP-based materials have received significant attention from both academia and industry in the field of HVDC cable insulation. In order to adopt PP as cable insulation material, the mechanical flexibility of PP should be improved. However, the regulation of the mechanical properties inevitably influences the electrical properties of PP. So extensive researches have been conducted on the regulations of the mechanical and electrical properties of PP. This review summarizes the research progress in recyclable polypropylene-based materials for HVDC cable insulation application. Particular attention is placed on the electrical property regulations and material structure-property relationship. The challenges that remain to be addressed and the opportunities for future studies in PP-based recyclable HVDC cable insulation materials are also presented.

Abstract:Polymers have been found wide applications in power equipment, due to their excellent electric 7 insulation properties, energy storage performance, and mechanical behaviors. The continuous 8 development of electric systems towards higher voltage, larger capacity, miniaturization and stringent 9 environment has posed an increasing challenge for polymeric materials. The attention has been 10directed on polymeric dielectric properties, charge transportation/space charge, electric breakdown, 11 interfacial phenomenon, treeing etc. to increase the electric performances. These properties rely on 12 the morphological and molecular structure of the polymer, in particular on its crystalline and 13 amorphous phase, long-period and interfacial structures. This authors in research topic have reported 14 the in-depth investigations in this field. 15For power cable insulation polymers, the working voltages for the manufactured cable have been up 16 to 500kV for HVAC and 640kV for HVDC applications, and the thickness of insulation is enlarged, 17 leading to the difficulty on the removal of byproducts caused by the crosslinking of polyethene (PE). 18In the case of HVDC cable, the residual crosslinking byproducts may significantly influence the 19 electric field distribution through affecting the conductivity of crosslinked polyethene (XLPE). Abstract:This position paper by the DEIS HVDC Cable Systems Technical Committee provides a review of existing diagnostic electrical and dielectric techniques for testing the insulation of polymeric extruded HVDC cable joints in the present Part 1. Here, the state of the art on the insulation of HVDC extruded cable system joints is covered with reference to types, design and testing techniques. This helps to identify routine tests as the first target for the onset of new testing procedures, AC-PD measurements as the readily-available measurement from manufacturers' practices for quality control of the insulation of accessories during routine tests and VHF/UHF wireless sensors as the best tool for performing such measurements on joints in the noisy factory environment. Thereby, a novel protocol for the measurement of partial discharges using AC voltages and VHF/UHF sensors, for quality control during routine tests on such joints, is derived in the next Part 2. This protocol is the main novelty of this investigation.

Abstract:Polymeric high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables are the core equipment in energy internet, which enable the long-distance large-capacity electric power transmission, large-scale utilization of renewable electric power and flexible interconnection of large power grids. Performance of the HVDC cables are determined by the properties of their insulation material. However, the traditional polymeric HVDC cable insulation material, crosslinking polyethylene (XLPE) is limited to relatively low working temperature which restricts the power capacity of HVDC cables. XLPE with thermosetting characteristics also presents a major barrier to material recycling and environmental pollution reduction. Here we report the ternary nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP), thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) and MgO nanoparticles as an efficient way to recyclable HVDC cable insulation material that simultaneously possess excellent thermal, mechanical and electrical properties, especially at high temperatures. At an optimal composition, the ternary nanocomposites integrate the complementary properties of the multi-components to raise the mechanical flexibility at room temperature and greatly improve the electrical properties at high temperatures (including suppressed space charge accumulation and increased breakdown strength and volume resistivity) while retaining high melting temperature comparable to PP of about 160 °C. This work may pave a way for synergistic optimization of the overall properties of insulation materials and enabling the successful development of recyclable insulation material for large-capacity HVDC cable application.

Abstract:Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) is commonly used as an insulation material in power cables. Due to the recent advancements in the field of high voltage power transmission and distribution, there is a need for novel cable insulation materials that have high performance, recyclability and high working temperature as alternatives for the conventional XPLE-based insulation materials. Polypropylene (PP) shows excellent properties and has drawn considerable attention as a potential high voltage direct current (HVDC) insulation material. Therefore, the development of PP-based HVDC cable insulation with improved electrical, thermal and mechanical properties is important in discovering a potentially recyclable cable insulation material. Due to the remarkable development in the field of nanodielectrics, nanotechnology can be a promising solution for enhancing the overall dielectric properties of PP-based insulation materials. This review presents the important aspects of PP-based nanocomposites for HVDC cable insulation with a special focus on understanding the effects of various parameters of nanofillers on the dielectric properties of PP-based HVDC cable insulation. Based on the gathered information, future perspectives for improving the dielectric properties of PP-based nanocomposites for HVDC cable are provided.

Abstract:Traditional crosslinking polyethylene (XLPE) insulation cannot meet the requirement of environmental protection and sustainable development. This speech summarizes the progress in the development of eco-friendly high voltage cable insulation materials, especially the PP based cable insulation materials. Propylene based materials, including the blends with other elastomers and copolymers are introduced as the base material for both AC and DC cable insulation application; secondly the effects and mechanisms of adding nanoparticles and grafting with polar groups in tailoring the properties of PP based cable insulation under DC electric field are discussed; thirdly, the space charge performances under high temperature and high electrical field, are presented. Finally, the issues for future research are introduced.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a method on improving direct current (DC) dielectric performance by designing a polystyrene (PS) pinning crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) for the application of insulation materials on high voltage direct current (HVDC) extruded cable. Electrical experimental results show that the addition of PS (1-5 phr, parts per hundreds of resin) can significantly reduce DC conductivity and increase DC breakdown strength of XLPE in the test temperature range of 30-90 degrees C. Microstructure investigation shows PS distributed as particles could participate in the formation of a crosslinking network with the help of a crosslinking agent, thus forming a polymer pinning structure at the interface between XLPE and PS. It is believed that such a special design strengthens the structure of XLPE, which leads to the improved DC dielectric performance at elevated temperatures. Our findings may contribute a new solution for developing HVDC cable insulation materials.
