Abstract:The preparation, single-crystal X-ray crystallography and magnetic properties are reported for two tetranuclear cluster complexes based on [W(V)(CN)(8)](3-) octacyanometallates. Reactions of [W(V)(CN)(8)](3-) with Co(II) ions in the presence of the capping ligand tpm (tpm = tri(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methane) lead to the formation of complex 1 [(tpm)(2)Co(II)][W(V)(2)(CN)(16)Co(2)(tpm)(2)(H(2)O)(2)].4H(2)O. Analogous reactions with the Mn(II) produce complex 2 [(tpm)(2)Mn(II)][W(V)(2)(CN)(16)Mn(2)(tpm)(2)(H(2)O)(2)].4H(2)O. Complexes 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in the space group of P1[combining macron]. Magnetic investigation shows the ferromagnetic coupling between Co(II) and W(V) ion in complex 1, while the antiferromagnetic interactions between Mn(II) and W(V) in complex 2. Further magnetic studies indicate the presence of spin glasses in complex 2, which may be attributed to the further ferromagnetic coupling between anionic and/or cationic cores.

Abstract:A novel zero-dimensional (OD) octacyanotungstate(V)-manganese(II) bimetallic assembly, {[Mn-II(bipy)(2)](2)(OX)}center dot {[Mn-II(bipy)(2)W(CN)(8)](2)}center dot 4H(2)O (1) (bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine, OX = C2O42-), was synthesized in methanol solution containing oxalic acid. X-ray analysis shows 1 is crystallized in monoclinic crystal system with C2/c space group and composed of two components of a dimeric Mn-2 Cation and a quadrate tetrameric Mn2W2 anion. The Mn2 and Mn2W2 moieties are connected by their respective pi-pi stacking to yield the alternative 2D layers, and the 2D layers are linked by hydrogen bonding to form a 3D network. The investigation of the magnetostructural correlation reveals that cyanide and oxalate bridges mediate weak intracluster antiferromagnetic coupling between Mn and W ions and between Mn ions, respectively. Further magnetic measurements and analysis show the spin glasses and intercluster ferromagnetic interaction exist in complex 1.

Abstract:A series of three-dimensional (3D) octacyanometallate-based bimetallic magnets, {[Mn(H(2)O)][Mn(0.75)(HCOO)(0.5)(H(2)O)(0.5)][W(CN)(8)] x H(2)O}(4n) (1), {[Mn(2)(HCOO)(HCOOH)][M(CN)(8)] x H(2)O}(n) (M = W (2) and Mo (3)), and {[Mn(2)(HCOO)(HCOOH)][W(CN)(8)] x CH(3)OH}(n) (M = W (4) and Mo (5)), were synthesized by the reaction of octacyanometallates A(3)[M(CN)(8)] x nH(2)O (A = Na, Cs, and (C(4)H(9))(3)NH; M = W and Mo; and n = 2 or 4) with manganese salt (Mn(CH(3)COO)(2) x 4 H(2)O, Mn(ClO(4))(2) x 6 H(2)O, and MnCl(2) x 4 H(2)O) in aqueous or methanolic solution containing formic acid. All complexes crystallize in the tetragonal or orthorhombic system. Complex 1 shows an unexpected 3D network structure by connections of manganese ions and octacyanotangstate-manganese double layers via cyanide bridges, while other complexes have typical structure constructions similar to the reported complexes {[MnL](m)[M(CN)(8)]}(n) (L = CH(3)COO(-), Cl(-), and H(2)O), which the CN group of [W(V)(CN)(8)] coordinates to eight Mn(II) ions forming a -[W(CN)(8)]-Mn(4)-[W(CN)(8)]-Mn(4)- columnar chain, and then all chains share Mn(II) ions as the nodes interlocking with each other to form the 3D networks. Magnetic studies indicate that the cyanide group mediates the antiferromagnetic coupling between octacyanometallates and manganese ions in all complexes, and the ferrimagnetic phase transition temperatures are 53, 52, 42, 49, and 41 K for 1-5, respectively.
A Cyanide-Bridged FeCo5 Square-Pyramidal Single-Ion Magnet

Abstract:The reaction of mononuclear [Co-II(Me(6)tren)Cl](+) precursors and diamagnetic [Fe-II(CN)(6)](4-) building blocks affords a cyanide-bridged hexanuclear FeCo5 complex featuring square-pyramidal architecture. The dc magnetic susceptibility data and theoretical calculations reveal that the complex exhibits a well-isolated S = 15/2 ground state composed of c-coupled S = 3/2 Co2+ ions. The ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal that the complex exhibits slow magnetic relaxation under an applied field due to the presence of considerable easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the five Co2+ ions. As far as is known, complex FeCo5 is the first square-pyramidal hexanuclear single-ion magnet.

Abstract:A new tetranuclear cobalt(II) molecular square in which adjacent Co(II) centers are linked by a mu(2)-bridging oxygen atom and a N-N bridge along the edges of the square has been designed for single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with high anisotropy barriers. The overall intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling at low temperature combined with the slow relaxation at static zero fields suggests a SMM behavior for this molecular square. The zero-field cooled magnetization (ZFCM) and field cooling magnetization (FCM) at 10 Oe illustrate the nonreversibility and bifurcation below 4.5 K. The deviations of magnetization from the saturated value in strong applied fields demonstrate the participation of low-lying excited states. The peaks of the out-of-phase signals are observed corresponding to coincidence of the applied ac field oscillation frequency with the relaxation rate.

Abstract:In this research, the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of an ion-pair complex {[MnII(hmp)2]2(Cl)2}{[MnII(hmp)2WV(CN)8]2} (1) (hmpH = 2-hydroxymethylpyridine) are reported. Complex 1 was prepared by [W (CN)8]3− reacting with Mn(II) salt and hmpH in MeCN solution. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 1 is crystallized in triclinic system with a space group of P-1 and its structure consists of four parts of two chlorine-bridged [Mn2] cations and two tetrameric [Mn2W2] anionic clusters. The cationic [Mn2] and anionic [Mn2W2] moieties each are connected by π–π stacking to form their own layer. The packing of cations and anions layer by layer via molecular electrostatic potential, Van der Waals force and hydrogen bonding constructs a three-dimensional supramolecular framework. The magnetic analyses show the antiferromagnetic coupling interaction between MnII and WV or MnII and MnII in both parts. No evidence of single-molecule magnet or long-range ordering is observed in the data. By comparing to an analog with spin glass properties, we draw a conclusion that the differences of crystal packing mode, especially the π–π stacking within each layer, could be a key factor for the distinct magnetic properties.
Single-Chain Magnets Based on Octacyanotungstate with the Highest Energy Barriers for Cyanide Compounds

Abstract:By introducing large counter cations as the spacer, two isolated 3, 3-ladder compounds, (Ph 4 P)[Co II (3-Mepy) 2.7 (H 2 O) 0.3 W V (CN) 8 ]·0.6H 2 O ( 1 ) and (Ph 4 As)[Co II (3-Mepy) 3 W V (CN) 8 ] ( 2 , 3-Mepy = 3-methylpyridine), were synthesized and characterized. Static and dynamic magnetic characterizations reveal that compounds 1 and 2 both behave as the single-chain magnets (SCMs) with very high energy barriers: 252(9) K for 1 and 224(7) K for 2 , respectively. These two compounds display the highest relaxation barriers for cyano-bridged SCMs and are preceded only by two cobalt(II)-radical compounds among all SCMs. Meanwhile, a large coercive field of 26.2 kOe ( 1 ) and 22.6 kOe ( 2 ) were observed at 1.8 K.

Abstract:The reaction of manganese acetate with octacyanotungastate in an aqueous solution of concentrated acetic acid gives two new three-dimensional cyano-bridged manganese(II)-tungstate(V) bimetallic assemblies, [Mn(II)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(CH(3)COO)][W(V)(CN)(8)].2H(2)O (1) (tetragonal space group I4/mcm, a = b = 11.9628(9) A, c = 13.367(2) A, and Z = 4) and Cs(I)(0.5)Mn(II)(2)[W(V)(CN)(8)](CH(3)CO(2))(1.5).H(2)O (2) (monoclinic space group C2/c, a = 16.274(2) A, b = 22.948(6) A, c = 13.196(1) A, beta = 128.040(6) degrees, and Z = 8). In complex 1, W(V)(CN)(8) adopts a square antiprismatic geometry, and each CN group coordinates to the Mn(II) ions forming W-Mn(4)-W-Mn(4)-...columnar linkages where four sites on the Mn(II) ion with octahedral geometry are occupied by CN groups. The columns are parallel and interlock, yielding a network structure. Complex 2 contains two different coordination geometries for W(V)(CN)(8), namely, square antiprismatic and dodecahedral. The columnar structures appear also in 2, where the Mn(II) ions in two different environments provide three and four coordinated sites to the CN groups. The columns are bridged by both dodecahedral W(V)(CN)(8) groups and acetates. Cs ions were intercalated in the lattice by the formation of short attractive contacts with the acetates. The field-cooled magnetization, ac susceptibility, and the field dependence of magnetization measurements show that both 1 and 2 are ferrimagnets with ordering temperatures 40 and 45 K, respectively. The investigation of the magnetostructural correlation shows that the ferrimagnetic ordering in 1 and 2 are attributed to the dominant antiferromagnetic exchange pathways d(z)2(W)-d(x')(y')(Mn) and d(x)2(-y)2(W) - d(x')(y')(Mn).

Abstract:Three trinuclear Mn2Mo molecules based on the orbitally degenerate [Mo(CN)7](4-) anion were prepared, one of which is the first single-molecule magnet (SMM) based on heptacyanomolybdate. The blocking temperature and the energy barrier (U = 40.5 cm(-1)) are records for a cyanide-based SMM. Wide hysteresis loops and sharp quantum tunneling steps were observed from single-crystal measurements.

Abstract:Reactions of the precursors [Ni(macrocyclic ligand)](2+) with [W(CN)(8)](3)(-) afford two octacyanotungstate-based assemblies, (H(2)L(1))(0.5)[Ni(L(1))][W(CN)(8)]center dot 2DMF center dot H(2)O (L(1) = 5,7,7,12,14,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) (1) and [Ni(L(2))](3)[W(CN)(8)](2)center dot 4H(2)O (L(2) = 3,10-dipropyl-1,3,5,8,10,12-hexaazacyclotetradecane) (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction shows that 1 consists of anionic one-dimensional (1D) linear chains, while 2 is built of 2D graphite-like layers with (6, 3) topology. Magnetic studies reveal that both complexes exhibit metamagnetic behavior from the spin-canted antiferromagnet to the ferromagnet induced by field.

Abstract:The mixed 3d-4f pentanuclear complex (Bu4N)[Mn(III)4Y(III)(shi)4(OAc)4(CH3OH)4]·CH3OH·H2O (1) (H3shi = salicylhydroxamic acid) was synthesized by the direct reaction of Y(NO3)3·6H2O, Mn(OAc)2·4H2O, and H3shi. When an additional ligand, (NHBu3)3[W(CN)8]·2H2O, was added, the mixed 3d-4f-5d hexanuclear complex (Et4N)5[Mn(III)4Y(III)(shi)4(OAc)4W(V)(CN)8](WO4)0.5 (2) was obtained. X-ray crystallographic analysis shows that the 3d-4f complex 1 represents a 12-metallacrown-4 (12-MC-4) structure, in which the metallacrown ring [Mn-N-O]4 connection captures one Y(III) ion with four bridging acetate anions, completing the eight-coordinated environment around Y(III) ion, while four methanol molecules each coordinate to the Mn(III) ions on the other side of the Y(III) ion. After octacyanotungstate is introduced, the [W(V)(CN)8] group substitutes for four methanol molecules of 1 to form complex 2. Magnetic studies indicate the overall antiferromagnetic coupling present within the MC ring of complex 1. However, interestingly, the dominant ferromagnetic coupling between Mn(III) ions was observed in complex 2. A susceptibility analysis shows that the natural spin alignments in 12-MC-4 metallacrowns are tuned from overall antiferromagnetic to dominant ferromagnetic fashions by magnetic coupling between Mn(III) ions and the W(V) ion. Complex 1 [Mn(III)4Y(III)] retains an S = 0 ground state, and complex 2 [Mn(III)4Y(III)W(V)] shows obvious single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with an ST = 11/2 ground state, respectively, before and after introduction of the octacyanotungstate group. The spin frustration geometrical structure constructed by four Mn(III) ions and one W(V) ion was considered as the key factor for switching on the SMM properties of the 12-MC-4 system.

Abstract:A one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymer [Co(btca)(1/2)(mbpy)](n) (1, mbpy=4,4 '-Dimethyl-2,2 '-bipyridyl, H(4)btca=1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid) constructed by a mixed tetracarboxylic-dipyridyl ligand strategy with a ribbon topology was synthesized and magnetically characterized. Magnetic studies combined with theoretical calculations reveal large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of the central Co(II) ions in a highly distorted five-coordination geometry. Interestingly, field-induced single-ion magnet (SIM) behavior was evidenced in the chain compound, making the cobalt(II) coordination ribbon to be the first five-coordinate SIM chain.
Three-Dimensional Fe-Ii-[Mo-Iii(Cn)(7)](4-) Magnets with Ordering below 65 K and Distinct Topologies Induced by Cation Identity

Abstract:Two cyanide-bridged compounds based on the Fe-II cation and the anisotropic [Mo-III(CN)(7)](4-) anion, namely, {Fe-2(H2O)(5)[Mo(CN)(7)]. 5H(2)O}(n) (1) and {[NH2(CH3)(2)](2)Fe-5(H2O)(10) [Mo(CN)(7)](3)center dot 8H(2)O}(n) (2), have been prepared. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that their structures exhibit different three-dimensional topologies as a result of the addition of [NH2(CH3)(2)](+) during the synthesis of 2. For both 1 and 2, the geometry of the [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) unit is a slightly distorted capped trigonal prism; all Fe-II centers are hexacoordinate and adopt a distorted octahedral configuration. Compound 1 is a three-nodal 3,4,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4.6(2)}{4(5).6}{4(6).6(12).8(3)}, while compound 2 is a five-nodal 4,4,4,6,7-connected net with the point symbol of {4(4).6(2)}{4(5).6}(4){4(6).6(7).8(2)}{4(9).6(11).8}(2). magnetic studies revealed that both compounds exhibit magnetic ordering below 65 K. Apart from the plethora of Mn-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds documented in the literature, these two Fe-II-[Mo(CN)(7)](4-) compounds are the only other [Mo(CN)(7)](4-) extended structures to be characterized by single crystal structures to date.
Tuning Magnetic Anisotropy in a Class of Co(II) Bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) Complexes

Abstract:Tuning the magnetic anisotropy of metal ions remains highly interesting in the design of improved single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein report synthetic, structural, magnetic, and computational studies of four mononuclear Co-II complexes, namely [Co(hfac)(2)(MeCN)(2)] (1), [Co(hfac)(2)(Spy)(2)] (2), [Co(hfac)(2)(MBIm)(2)] (3), and [Co(hfac)(2)(DMF)(2)] (4) (MeCN=acetonitrile, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetone, Spy=4-styrylpyridine, MbIm=5,6-dimethylbenzimidazole, DMF=N,N-dimethylformamide), with distorted octahedral geometry constructed from hexafluoroacetylacetone (hfac) and various axial ligands. By a building block approach, complexes 2-4 were synthesized by recrystallization of the starting material of 1 from various ligands containing solution. Magnetic and theoretical studies reveal that 1-4 possess large positive D values and relative small E parameters, indicating easy-plane magnetic anisotropy with significant rhombic anisotropy in 1-4. Dynamic alternative current (ac) magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that these complexes exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under external fields, suggesting field-induced single-ion magnets (SIMs) of 1-4. These results provide a promising platform to achieve fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy through varying the axial ligands based on Co(II) bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonate) complexes.

Abstract:Three two-dimensional Co-II complexes, namely, [Co(dps)(2)Cl-2](n) (1), [Co(dps)(2)Br-2](n) (2), and [Co(dps)(2)(H2O)(2) center dot I-2 center dot(H2O)(4)](n) (3) (where dps = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide), have been synthesized using a rationally designed synthetic approach and characterized structurally and magnetically. Although they crystallize in different space groups, these compounds all have similar two-dimensional (4,4) layer structures where the Co2+ centers are bridged by the bis.monodentate) ligand dps. In addition, the coordination geometry of the Co2+ centers is of a general CoN4X2 octahedral environment formed by four equatorial N atoms from four dps ligands and two X atoms (X = Cl, Br, and O atoms for 1-3, respectively) in the axial positions. Ab initio calculations revealed that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling, the spin Hamiltonian containing the zero-field splitting parameters D and E cannot be used to describe their magnetic anisotropy. According to the calculation, the g(z) values for the spin-orbit ground doublets of 1-3 are larger than the g(x) and g(y) values, which indicates the easy-axis magnetic anisotropy of these compounds. Due to the existence of the magnetic anisotropy, field-induced single-ion magnet behavior can be observed in all these complexes. This work illustrated that care should be taken to interpret the magnetic data of octahedral Co-II compounds. In addition, extended frameworks with long and flexible organic spacers are good candidates for the construction of SIMs with different axial ligands and different magnetic properties.
Two Three-Dimensional [Moiii(cn)7]4--based Magnets Showing New Topologies and Ferrimagnetic Ordering below 80 K.

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of heptacyanomolybdate-based magnets remain a challenge due to the complexity of this system. Here, we reported the crystal structures and magnetic properties of two three-dimensional (3D) frameworks prepared from the self-assembly of the [Mo-III(CN)(7)](4-) unit with Mn-II ions in the presence of different amide ligands, namely Mn-2(DMF)(H2O)(2)[Mo(CN)(7)]center dot H2O center dot CH3OH (1) and Mn-2(DEF)(H2O)[Mo(CN)(7)] (2) (DMF = N,N '-dimethylformamide and DEF = N,N '-diethylformamide). Single-crystal structure determinations showed that compound 1 crystallizes in the triclinic space group Pi, while 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n. The difference in the structures of 1 and 2 is the coordination mode of the amide molecules: while the DMF molecules in 1 are only terminal ligands, the DEF molecules in 2 act as bridging ligands between two Mn-II centers. Although their space groups and local coordination environments of the metal centers are of some difference, both compounds have similar extended 3D frameworks where the spin centers are bridged by both the CN- and mu(2)-O bridges. They both have a three-nodal 4, 4, 7-connecting topological net with the vertex symbol of {4(3)center dot 5(3)}{4(4)center dot 5(2)}{4(7)center dot 5(4)center dot 6(6)center dot 7(4)} for 1, and {4(3)center dot 5(3)}{4(4)center dot 5(2)}{4(7)center dot 5(4)center dot 6(7)center dot 7(3)} for 2, respectively. Magnetic measurements revealed that both 1 and 2 exhibit ferrimagnetic ordering below 80 K together with another anomaly at about 45 K probably owing to spin reorientation. Besides, spin frustration and non-linear alignment of the magnetic moments are also possible due to competitive antiferromagnetic interactions between the spin carriers. These compounds expanded the family of Mn-II-[Mo-III(CN)(7)](4-) magnets with high magnetic ordering temperatures.
