Abstract:We appreciate the interest and the suggestion from Dr Tourtier and his colleagues from France. The Wenchuan earthquake affected the less-developed mountainous area in west China where portable ultrasound equipment was not readily available. However, a few rescue teams from major hospitals, including our hospital, did adopt focused assessment with sonography in trauma during triage. Our experience supports their suggestion; that is, focused assessment with sonography in trauma, in combination with history and physical examination, is helpful in triage and decision of transfer. Once the patients have been transferred to our center, we carried out both ultrasound and computed tomographic scan for further diagnosis. Focused assessment with sonography in trauma as a triage toolJournal of Pediatric SurgeryVol. 45Issue 4PreviewWe congratulate Xiang et al [1] for their study describing triage strategies adopted during the postearthquake period with numerous pediatric casualties. We want to highlight the role of the focused assessment with sonography in trauma (FAST). It offers a reliable tool not only for trauma treatment but also during triage that can be used successfully as a screening tool specifically in children. Focused assessment with sonography in trauma has now become an extension of the physical examination and helps detect life-threatening injuries within the “golden hour” and allows appropriate triage of the patients [2,3].
