Abstract:Electrosynthesis is a technique that is attracting increased attention and has many appealing features, particularly its potential greenness. At the same time, electrosynthesis requires a solvent and a supporting electrolyte in order for current to pass through the reaction. These are effectively consumable reagents unless a convenient means of recycling can be developed. As part of our interest in unusual solvents and electrochemistry, we explored the application of simple, inexpensive, and recyclable deep eutectic solvents to the allylation of carbonyls. While several sets of conditions were developed, the goal of avoiding stoichiometric amounts of metal has proven elusive. Still, a deep eutectic solvent can be used to plate out and thus recover the metal used, offering an interesting new option for electrochemical allylations. Beilstein J. Org. Abstract:Compared with conventional reductive coupling, reductive coupling under electrochemical conditions without external reductants is greener, milder, and more efficient and is of increasing interest to organic chemists. In this work, we report the sacrificial anode, nickel-catalyzed electrochemical allylation reaction of aryl and alkyl halides. The reaction can be applied to a range of allylation reagents such as trifluoroalkenes, oxalates, and acetates.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis has been rapidly developing over the past few years. Here, we report a practical and eco-friendly electrocatalytic isomerization of allylic alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds. This reaction can be carried out in undivided cells without the addition of external chemical oxidants and metal catalysts. Moreover, this reaction features a broad substrate scope including challenging allylic alcohols bearing tri- and tetra-substituted olefins and affords straightforward access to diverse β-aryl-ketones. Mechanistic investigations suggest that the reactions proceed through a radical process. This study represents a unique example in which electrochemistry enables hydrogen atom transfer in organic allylic alcohol substrates using a simple organocatalyst.

Abstract:A reactive oxygen species mediated electrooxidation strategy is proposed to realize the transformation of styrene to benzaldehyde with high selectivity of ca. 89% and Faradaic efficiency of 28.8% on Pt anode. Isotopic labelling, electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenging experiments reveal that the in-situ formed OH• and O 2 - • species via anodic water oxidation play the crucial role in selective formation of benzaldehyde.

Abstract:Herein, we report an electroreduction of unactivated alkyl alkenes enabled by [Fe]-H, which is provided through the combination of anodic iron salts and the silane generated in situ via cathodic reduction, using H 2 O as an H-source. The catalytic amounts of Si-additive work as an H-carrier from H 2 O to generate a highly active silane species in situ under continuous electrochemical conditions. This approach shows a broad substrate scope and good functional group compatibility. In addition to hydrogenation, the use of D 2 O instead of H 2 O provides the desired deuterated products in good yields with excellent D-incorporation (up to >99%). Further late-stage hydrogenation of complex molecules and drug derivatives demonstrate potential application in the pharmaceutical industry. Mechanistic studies are performed and provide support for the proposed mechanistic pathway.

Abstract:Electrochemical technology is a robust approach to removing toxic and persistent chlorinated organic pollutants from water; however, it remains a challenge to design electrocatalysts with high activity and selectivity as elaborately as natural reductive dehalogenases. Here we report the design of high-performance electrocatalysts toward water dechlorination by mimicking the binding pocket configuration and catalytic center of reductive dehalogenases. Specifically, our designed electrocatalyst is an assembled heterostructure by sandwiching a molecular catalyst into the interlayers of two-dimensional graphene oxide. The electrocatalyst exhibits excellent dechlorination performance, which enhances reduction of intermediate dichloroacetic acid by 7.8 folds against that without sandwich configuration and can selectively generate monochloro-groups from trichloro-groups. Molecular simulations suggest that the sandwiched inner space plays an essential role in tuning solvation shell, altering protonation state and facilitating carbon-chlorine bond cleavage. This work demonstrates the concept of mimicking natural reductive dehalogenases toward the sustainable treatment of organohalogen-contaminated water and wastewater.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C–H functionalization reactions have emerged as attractive tools for organic synthesis. This process offers an alternative to conventional methods that require harsh chemical oxidants. However, this electrolysis requires divided cells to avoid catalyst deactivation by cathodic reduction. Herein, we report the first example of palladium-catalyzed electrochemical C–H alkylation of arenes using undivided electrochemical cells in water, thereby providing a practical solution for the introduction of alkyl groups into arenes.

Abstract:Lewis-acid catalysis and electrochemistry represent two powerful fields that have found widespread application in organic chemistry. Reported herein is an asymmetric electrosynthesis in combination with a chiral Ni catalyst leading to an intermolecular alkylation reaction in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 97% ee). Mechanistic studies suggest that the Lewis-acid-bound radical intermediate from a single-electron anodic oxidation selectively reacts with the benzylic radical species to generate the desired adducts.

Abstract:The allylations of a variety of carbonyl compounds were carried out smoothly in the presence of phase transfer catalysts (PTC) when mediated by tin or zinc in distilled water, giving rise to the corresponding homoallylic alcohols in excellent yields. Abstract:Herein, we report an efficient one-pot iridium-catalyzed reductive hydroamination of terminal alkynes with amines. A variety of primary amines and secondary amines are amenable to this catalytic system, leading to the complicated aliphatic amines in excellent yields.
