Abstract:Drawing upon the transaction cost economics and organizational learning theory, this study examines how international diversification affects firm's innovation performance. With a longitudinal data set obtained from a sample of 73 Chinese firms in information communication equipment manufacturing industry, home appliances manufacturing industry, and low voltage apparatus and cable manufacturing industry, we find a curvilinear inverted S-shaped relationship between international diversification and innovation performance. It implies that emerging enterprises might gain increase at the expansion stage, experience a hard time at the conflict stage, and then reap again at the convergence phase.

Abstract:Business model innovation consists of new ways of defining, creating, and capturing value including non-monetary value, and is an indicator of crossing traditional sector boundaries, thereby providing the necessary agency to achieve significant new market opportunities around technological innovation. Individual businesses may lack the scope or depth of competencies required, especially in the case of entrenched industrial structures, framings, regulatory provision, and consumer attitudes. Business models are thus potentially ossified within highly structured socio-technical systems. This article analyses innovation in business models arising from the confluence of two mature and stable industries under conditions of external pressure, deregulation, privatisation, and the emergence of a new, shared interest. We illustrate the paper with examples of vehicle manufacturers developing business concepts for vehicle-to-grid, domestic energy, second life, and industrial electricity provision from renewable energy. We find that in the period 2012 to 2020, 17 vehicle manufacturers used 38 electric models to test a diverse menu of options established from four applications with changes in boundary conditions that have influenced business model innovation. This process created space for energy policy and mobility policy to become increasingly intertwined as battery electric vehicles enter the mass market, raising questions over the future of automobility as well as electricity generation and distribution.

Abstract:This paper explores why new entrants,instead of incumbents with resource advantages,are leading the electric vehicle industry from business model perspective.We focus on four selected cases,BYD and SAIC from China,and T ES-LA and GM from the U.S.,one new entrant and one incumbent from both countries.Based on interviews,visits and lit-erature research,w e find that there are distinctive differences in the business model betw een new entrants and incum-bents,and value propulsion better fit electric vehicle technologies,vertical integration value network,and cost-revenue model with low variable cost are critical reasons for new entrants to lead.This paper helps to get a better understanding on two questions.One is how new entrants leverage business model to lead when incumbents have already applied new tech-nologies.The other is what business model helps firms to lead in electric vehicle industry better.

Abstract:Mainstream technology catching-up studies only focus on how latecomers assimilate the acquired technology from the developed countries in its home countries, paying little attention to their technology innovation activities directly in the developed countries and the interactions between developed and developing countries to overcome first-mover advantages and catching-up with incumbents. This study examines the practices of the rapidly rising Chinese new entrants of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, discovers the mechanism and path of cross-market innovation (CMI), established its structural model based on multiple case analysis, proposed three-stage progressing path and three integration mechanisms, and provides new ideas for latecomers to leverage advantages from innovation systems of both developed and developing countries to achieve the change of technological leadership. These new Chinese EV players in study directly go to the USA to innovate on top of acquiring new technologies in the USA, and leverage both first-mover and follower advantages, quickly becoming leading technologically in the areas of emerging technology innovation. The study suggests that latecomers could utilize CMI as their technology catching-up strategy and achieve technological leadership change in both home and developed countries. The CMI model has been tested through the structural equation model (SEM) through structured questionnaire.

Abstract:As one of seven strategic emerging industries, new energy vehicle industry has great significance in China's economic growth and environmental protection. In this paper, taking Toyota, Tesla and BYD as examples, innovative models of new energy vehicles are analyzed. The paper analyzes and compares mainly innovation of the ecological environment, market positioning, innovation path and business model, drawing the following conclusions: Toyota adopted innovative symbiosis strategy that by the use of complementary resources of global relevant enterprises, it made optimized configuration in the global, and built enterprise ecosystem to make progressive disruptive innovation and develop the middle and low-end market; Tesla in a better environment for innovation among the best in the world standing on the forefront of technology innovation environment, quick disruptive innovation, the first to lead the high-end demand, and then to low terminal extension is Tesla's business model. BYD in Shenzhen, a good ecological environment of innovation, through cooperation with domestic and foreign, to niche-based, open platform for product innovation is formed by a plurality of core technologies capture gather after the adoption of the platform innovation resources in connection with the comprehensive remodelling expansion, continued low-cost, high-strength, integrated, open innovation, products are mainly targeted at low-end market.

Abstract:Mainstream technology catching-up literature only focuses on how latecomers to assimilate the acquired technology from the markets of the developed countries, which emphasize the latecomers’ innovation activities only focusing on their domestic markets, paying little attention to their R&D and innovation activities in the markets of the developed countries, and to reverse back to markets of their home countries. This study discovers the mechanism and path of cross-market innovation based on multiple case analysis on the Chinese new electric vehicle (EV) OEMs. These new EV players directly go to the USA to innovate on top of acquiring new technologies and overcoming the latecomer disadvantage, quickly to become technologically leading position in some new technology innovations, such as drive motor control units, battery management systems, autonomous drive, connected vehicle, big data analytics, V2X and share based business model, in the EV space. The phenomenon of innovative paths by these EV OEMs provide the base to explore the underlined innovation model for latecomers, Cross-Market Innovation (CMI), to catch up and even to lead in both home country and developed country.

Abstract:Nurturing an emerging industry's business ecosystem always requires stakeholders' efforts and role transformation. By systematically reviewing and studying the evolution of the Chinese electric vehicle industry, this paper constructs a three-dimensional theoretical framework including stages of business ecosystem lifecycle, stakeholder classification and functional roles, to analyse the transformation both of different stakeholders and their functional roles. The findings show that business ecosystem stakeholders have experienced role transformation following a mechanism defined as the 'Triple Oscillation' Model during the evolution of the emerging industry. These findings also help develop a conceptual model of agent-based system for business ecosystem evolution, which could be a starting point for further emerging industry study. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The paper develops the structure of business ecosystems, operating mechanisms and integrated configuration models by examining multiple case studies of electric vehicle (EV) producers in China and the EU (Germany, France and Denmark). The EV ecosystem can be categorized into four paradigms using a target market (mainstream or niche innovation) and growth context (advanced economies or emerging economies). These four paradigms are advanced mainstream, advanced niche, emerging mainstream and emerging niche. This research also explores three key operating mechanisms with which to organize EV business ecosystems, namely vision developing, platform organizing and institution re-configuring. As a latecomer,compared with western paradigms, the development of Chinese EV industry is more openly engaged with vision development, platform organization and institution reconfiguration, such as government regulation.

Abstract:Even though the total amount of global electric vehicles (EVs) has risen significantly in recent years, the development of EVs is still at an early and crucial stage, at which we are eager to have not only the technical but also commercial innovation, especially the innovative business model to create a virtuoso cycle for EVs' popularization and operation. This article focuses on the innovation of global business models for EVs. We take six countries in three different regions-the United States in North America, Germany, France and England in Europe, Japan and China in Asia-as examples to illustrate their attempts and efforts to innovate EV business models for the development of EVs in their own countries. At last, based on the analysis of these examples, this article illuminates the implications of such EV business models, offering several pieces of advice for achieving a transition to an EV world.

Abstract:The emergence and infusion of digital technologies bring greater chances for start-ups to conduct disruptive innovation through digital entrepreneurship. Despite the existed business practices, the happening mechanism of start-up’s disruptive innovation in the digital economy context remains unclear. This study aims to understand the evolutionary mechanism and fulfillment path start-ups’ disruptive innovation in the digital era. The longitudinal case study is conducted for a Chinese Internet start-up that successfully launched disruptive innovation under the digital economy background. Adopting a process perspective, this study analyzes the evolutionary phases of digital disruptive innovation. Moreover, this study identifies the digital technologies adoption, dynamic capabilities deployment, and business model innovation as the key pillars, and their interactions. Finally, this study induces and proposes its evolution mechanism and fulfillment path models. This study enriches the research scope of disruptive innovation and digital entrepreneurship. This study can offer theoretical guidance for the start-ups’ disruptive innovation in the digital era, and practical implications for implementing a digital catching-up strategy.

Abstract:As environmental pollution worsens, New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) are an effective solution to improve air quality. NEVs have made significant technological and marketing advancements, and Tesla is a model for developing NEVs. This study explores the innovation of NEV technology and marketing, using Tesla as a case study to determine how to use NEV technology and marketing effectively. Tesla's breakthrough occurred in 2013 when they turned a loss into an $11.2 million net profit, and their success continued to skyrocket. We analyze Tesla's marketing model, after-sales service, promotion methods, funding sources, and core competencies to identify their unique advantages in the business model and strategic portfolio. This study provides a useful reference for the innovation of NEV technology and marketing.

Abstract:To achieve market-oriented green innovation, this paper explores the evolutionary path and driving factors of disruptive green innovation using an exploratory case study in which data are collected from the Luyuan electric bicycle company in China. The results reveal that disruptive green innovation is a dynamic and cumulative process. Entrepreneurship drives to open new markets. Competition within the industry drives to expand the new markets. Competition among industries and the subsidy policy drive to encroach on mainstream low-end markets. Technology and marketing drive to encroach on mainstream high-end markets. To scholars, our research contributes to the literature on green innovation by uncovering the application of disruptive innovation theory in the field of green innovation. To practitioners in firms, this evolutionary process can function as a frame of reference, enabling the tailoring of a market-oriented strategy for green innovation.

Abstract:Purpose The overarching theme of this article is the importance of innovations that are created within the emerging economies. More specifically, the article aims to focus on the development of various alternatives to vehicles powered by the internal combustion engine, new energy vehicles (NEVs), within China. Design/methodology/approach The broad strategic approach of two sectors within the NEV sector in China, the pure electric vehicle (EV) and the low‐speed electric vehicle (LSEV) sectors, are compared using recent data and conclusions are drawn. Findings The EV sector is viewed by central government as a key sector for China's future industrial growth and is heavily supported. In contrast, the LSEV sector receives no support from central government and yet clearly outstrips the sales of EVs. The article argues that the latter's success is a reflection of the LSEV sector's focus on business model rather than technological innovation. Practical implications The article highlights the importance of monitoring innovations that come from within emerging economies and also illustrates the benefits that can come from commercially focused innovations rather than those based on technology. Social implications Finding alternatives to vehicles powered by fossil fuels is one of the most important challenges facing the world today. This article looks at the search for one alternative and examines its implications. Originality/value The article examines a business sector that is peculiarly Chinese and yet has potential implications far beyond China. It also contains recent sales figures and other data collected directly from sources in China.

Abstract:The article looks at the phenomenon of the new entrants surpassing the market establishers in China's and the USA's electric vehicle marketplace. Most of the current studies focus on the leading companies having first moves on early technology adoption. Based on the results from the expert interviews and literature review, we compared cases from both China and the USA. The study constructed and validated a framework for a theoretical model for the innovation drive, the technological mode and the business model to explain underlining driving factors and mechanisms where new entrants are taking the lead in the electric vehicle market. Suggestions for both new entrants and establishers are provided based on the established framework.

Abstract:Research on business model emerges as a promising area. This article aims at exploring a dynamic match between business model and firm growth. Through a longitudinal study of a Chinese private manufacturing firm with a history of more than twenty years, it is indicated that, when moving from initial stage to adjusting and then to expansion stage, the firm experiences a significant change along three dimensions of business model: value proposition, value creation, and value system integration. The contribution of this article is fourfold: understanding firm growth process from a perspective of business model; reconceptualizing business model; extending the scope where business model can be applied; uncovering the dynamics of business model.

Based on understanding the operating mode innovation concept ,w e first study the four styles of operating mode innovation in strategic emerging industries ,and then analyses the difference of advantages and disadvantages ,innovative paths and obstacles between incumbent firms and entrepreneurial firms in sense of the world electric vehicle industry .Based on this , we sum up that external conditional of operating mode innovation in strategic emerging industries includes technical sup‐ply ,industrial environment ,information network infrastructure ,market demand and financial support .Correspondingly , policy recommendations for promoting operating mode innovation in emerging industries are proposed at last ,constituting of access system ,market system ,support mechanism ,financial system and so on .

Abstract:Purpose Business Model Innovation is increasingly created by an ecosystem of related companies. This paper aims to investigate the transition of a manufacturing ecosystem toward electric vehicles from a business model perspective. Design/methodology/approach The authors investigate an automotive manufacturing ecosystem that is in transition toward electric and electrified vehicles, conducting semi-structured interviews with 46 informants from 27 ecosystem members. Findings The results reveal that the actions of several ecosystem members are driven by regulations relating to emissions. Novel requirements regarding components and complementary offers necessitate the entry of actors from other industries and the formation of new ecosystem members. While the newly emerged ecosystem has roots in an established ecosystem, it relies on new value offers. Further, the findings highlight the importance of ecosystem governance, while the necessary degree of change in the members' business models depends on their roles and positions in the ecosystem. Therefore, upstream suppliers of components must perform business model adaptation, whereas downstream providers must perform more complex business model innovation. Originality/value The paper is among the first to investigate an entire manufacturing ecosystem and analyze its transition toward electric vehicles and the implications for business model innovation.

Abstract:The deployment of electric vehicles has attracted growing attention and is now seen as a possible pathway for a transition towards sustainable transportation. This paper provides insight into the commercialization of electric vehicles in Shenzhen focusing on business innovation and the regulatory context in which it occurs. Using the business model canvas framework, this paper analyzes interactions between enterprises and governments along the value chain of electric vehicles in the bus and taxi fleets. It also discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the Shenzhen model both in business innovation and government regulation for promoting electric vehicle use. This paper finds that Shenzhen has succeeded in fostering a distinct government-enterprise cooperation model that not only reduces the financial pressure on the local government to promote electric vehicle use, but also gives enterprises significant leeway to experiment with various innovative business models. The joint result of these efforts is that the commercialization of electric vehicles has become feasible for delivering the public transport service (buses and taxis) in Shenzhen. Still, this paper argues that the current model of Shenzhen can be further enhanced by: 1) encouraging private investment in charging infrastructures by means of public–private-partnerships; and 2) standardizing electric-vehicle technologies and production to break down the local protectionism in the electric vehicle market. The Shenzhen model acts as a source of inspiration by pointing out the significance of integrating business innovations and government regulations to facilitate the deployment of electric vehicles, which provides practical lessons for industrial players and policy makers in other cities. Furthermore, this work offers theoretical references regarding the application of the multi-actor perspective and the business model canvas framework to analyze the actors and interactions along the value chain of innovative technologies.
