Abstract:Chien-Shiung Wu, one of the most accomplished physicists of the 20th century, helped conifrm the theory of parity nonconservation of weak interaction advocated by Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang with experiments, who were jointly awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics f or their theoretical work. But Wu did not share the prize. Despite this, Wu’s contributions to science cannot be neglected, and what should be focused on about Wu is her spirit. In scientiifc research, she displayed her devotion to science, her courage to overcome various obstacles meticulously, and her creativity in experiment. She also entertained a righteous value on scientiifc ethics. Apart f rom scientiifc research, Wu dedicated her life to education and tried to change the prejudice of society against women.

Abstract:Abstract Chen-Ning Yang ( ) is the most distinguished Chinese theoretical physicist. In 1954, together with Robert Mills, he formulated the Yang–Mills Gauge Theory, which led to the development of the Standard Model, the leading framework for understanding particle physics. In 1956, Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee ( ) proposed the possibility of parity non-conservation in weak interaction, which won them the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957. Besides these two major achievements, Yang made many other seminal contributions to particle physics, statistical physics and condensed matter physics. At the end of 2003, Yang returned to China from the US and established the Institute for Advanced Study at Tsinghua University in Beijing. NSR’s Executive Editor-in-Chief Mu-ming Poo ( ), a neurobiologist, and Alexander Wu Chao ( ), an accelerator physicist at Stanford University, talked with Professor Yang on a variety of topics, ranging from his retrospective view on Yang–Mills theory, on his contemporary physicists, on tastes in scientific research, and on the current and future developments of Chinese science. The following is an excerpt from this conversation that took place on 21 March 2019 at Tsinghua University, Beijing.

A Distinguished Scholar, Poetry Critic, and Theorist: in Memory of Marjorie Perloff

Abstract:Professor Marjorie Perloff was a distinguished scholar, poetry critic, and theorist. Her profound insights and unique perspectives on modern and contempo-rary American poetry have earned her high recognition in the international academic community. She was not only an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University and the University of Southern California but also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society. Her research spanned multiple fields, with outstanding achievements particularly in avant-garde poetry and modernist and postmodernist theory. Her works, including The Poetics of Indeterminacy: Rimbaud to Cage, Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Me-dia, Infrathin: An Experiment in Micropoetics, have not only provided new perspec-tives for understanding modern poetry but also advanced the development of poetry theory, establishing leading theories such as the poetics of indeterminacy and micro-poetics. Professor Perloff also served as the long-term president of China-American Association for Poetry and Poetics, actively promoting cultural exchange between China and the United States and fostering deep cooperation in the field of poetry research. Though Professor Perloff passed away, she has left behind us a valuable academic legacy. We will always keep her in our hearts.
Incriminated writers and their wives: Gendered memory of a national campaign in Mao's China

Abstract:Memory Studies, Volume 17, Issue 1, Page 39-55, February 2024. The primary source of this study is 76 video interviews concerning a political campaign by the Chinese Communist Party: the Anti-Hu Feng Counter-revolutionary Clique Movement (1955–1956). This campaign and the long incrimination of its central figures—Hu Feng (1902–1985), his wife Mei Zhi (1914–2004), and other associates—have had an impact on Chinese intellectuals for nearly seven decades and generated hundreds of (auto)biographies, memoirs, critical writings, and scholarly studies since the 1980s. Victimized writers managed to publish again, but the stories of their wives remained obscured and marginalized for years. This article presents three research findings: first, the wives provide different but equally essential testimonies as do the writers; second, methods used by feminist historians can benefit oral history collection from all, but from women and the marginalized in particular; and third, gendered memory helps to bridge the gap between those who have and have not personally experienced specific historical events.

Abstract:The years 1910-1911 are auspicious years in Chinese mathematics with the births of Pao-Lu Hsu, Luo-Keng Hua and Shiing-Shen Chern. These three began the development of modern mathematics in China: Hsu in probability and statistics, Hua in number theory, and Chern in differential geometry. We here review some facts about the life of P.-L. Hsu which have been uncovered recently, and then discuss some of his contributions. We have drawn heavily on three papers in the 1979 Annals of Statistics (volume 7, pages 467-483) by T. W. Anderson, K. L. Chung and E. L. Lehmann, as well as an article by Jiang Ze-Han and Duan Xue-Fu in Hsu's collected papers.

Abstract:On August 4 this year, Tsung-Dao Lee, a renowned theoretical physicist of Chinese origin, passed away at the age of 97. His most famous discovery dates back to 1956, when -- together with Chen-Ning Yang -- he postulated that parity symmetry might be broken by the weak interaction. They suggested experimental tests of this revolutionary idea, which were conducted within one year. The results confirmed the conjecture by Lee and Yang, thus changing a core paradigm of physics.

Abstract:As China continues to open up to the transnational circulation of labor, ideas, technology and capital under globalization, we must wonder: will Chinese society’s more cosmopolitan and transnational groups continue to be guided by guanxi? The authors conducted 40 in-depth interviews with Chinese physicists at 11 research universities in three cities in order to examine the role of ethics, including guanxi, in the professional lives of one of China’s most cosmopolitan populations, the elite scientific community. Analysis reveals, counter-intuitively, that Chinese physicists very much think about guanxi in relation to their research grants and scientific collaboration, that the ethical connotation of guanxi is contextual, and that some see it as a double-edged sword. They realize that guanxi can empower the individual scientist and the scientific community even as it weakens them both.

Impact of Chen-Ning Yang’s theoretical work on ultracold atomic physics

Abstract:As early as the 1950s, Prof. Yang and his collaborators realized that the most important interaction effects in a dilute quantum gas can be described by the s-wave scattering length between particles. This insight leads to universal descriptions of the interaction effects without the detailed knowledge of the interaction potential. They derived a formula expanding the energy density in terms of the gas parameter. This formula is later known as the Lee-Huang-Yang correction. However, it took forty years for the experimentalists to overcome several challenges and finally achieve degenerate quantum gases of atoms in 1995. The developments after 1995 have led to an exciting field known as “quantum gases” or “ultracold atomic gases”. The ultracold atom system has flexible tunability, allowing both the scattering length and the dimensionality to vary. The Lee-Huang-Yang corrections were observed from several experiments on ultracold atoms by increasing the scattering length. In addition, by reducing the dimensionality to one-dimension, several experiments on ultracold atoms have confirmed the Yang-Yang thermodynamics for one-dimensional bosons that Prof. Yang obtained in the 1960s and the large- N limit of one-dimensional fermions that Prof. Yang obtained around 2010. By increasing the dimensionality through using the idea of synthetic dimension, the experiment on ultracold atoms has also demonstrated the Yang monopole in the SU (2) non-abelian gauge field proposed by Prof. Yang in the 1970s. All of these experiments show the long-lasting impact of Prof. Yang’s theoretical work over several decades.

Abstract:We will try to sketch Professor F. Y. Wu's contributions in lattice statistical mechanics, solid state physics, graph theory, enumerative combinatorics and so many other domains of physics and mathematics. We will recall F. Y. Wu's most important and well-known classic results and we will also sketch his most recent researches dedicated to the connections of lattice statistical mechanical models with deep problems in pure mathematics. Since it is hard to provide an exhaustive list of all his contributions, to give some representation of F. Y. Wu's "mental connectivity" we will concentrate on the interrelations between the various results he has obtained in so many different domains of physics and mathematics. Along the way we will also try to understand Wu's motivations and his favorite concepts, tools and ideas.

Abstract:The Ming scholar JIAO Hong(1540-1620) used to draw upon WU Cheng's(1249-1333) views,especially his examples of images and exegesis,in his Yiquan.This is indispensible with his holding the Changes of the Han(206 BCE-202 CE) tradition in esteem.JIAO Hong regarded WU Cheng's Yi learning as the successor of the Han tradition.As a matter of fact,WU paid more attention to the Song(960-1279) scholars' restoration of the ancient Changes and endeavored to add his own innovations.By his refuting some of WU's arguments,it can be seen that JIAO Hong employed the documents of the Han dynasty as decisive basis for his textual research.The revitalization of the Han tradition since the mid and late Ming dynasty not only profited from WU Cheng and other scholars' Yi learning but also was inspired by the ethos of restoration of the ancient Changes in the Song dynasty.

Abstract:This study utilizes global digitalized books and articles to examine the scientific fame of the most influential physicists. Our research reveals that the greatest minds are gone but not forgotten. Their scientific impacts on human history have persisted for centuries. We also find evidence in support of own-group fame preference, i.e., that the scientists have greater reputations in their home countries or among scholars sharing the same languages. We argue that, when applied appropriately, Google Books and Ngram Viewer can serve as promising tools for altmetrics, providing a more comprehensive picture of the impacts scholars and their achievements have made beyond academia.

Abstract:Han China (202 BCE-220 CE) is a haunted world filled with spirits, demons, and ghosts of all kinds, whose influence is felt everywhere. In a time when variegated theories on the spirit world and mortuary traditions vie with each other for prominence, Wang Chong (27-ca. 100 CE), a most original philosopher, offers his systematic treatment of these contentious issues. Writing in a lively style with passion, reason, and patience, Wang Chong actively engages himself in these debates and applies organized and meticulous inquiry to tell fallacies of belief from what he believes to be the truth. This paper examines Wang Chong’s arguments on post-mortem existence and thrifty burial in detail and pays special attention to the strengths and weaknesses of his thesis.

Abstract:This article introduces the biographies and achievements of the first Chinese nominator and nominee for the Nobel Prizes in natural sciences. As the first Chinese scientist invited to nominate Nobel Laureates, WU Xian, an internationally renowned biochemist, recommended John H Northrop and James B Sumner as candidates for the 1932 Nobel Prizein Physiology or Medicine; whereas WU Liande, a pioneer of China’s quarantine system and an outstanding sanitarian, became the first Chinese nominee, who was nominated for the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work of revealing the role of marmot in the spread of plague.
Picturing Chinese science: wartime photographs in Joseph Needham's science diplomacy

Abstract:Joseph Needham occupies a central position in the historical narrative underpinning the most influential practitioner-derived definition of 'science diplomacy'. The brief biographical sketch produced by the Royal Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science sets Needham's activities in the Second World War as an exemplar of a science diplomacy. This article critically reconsiders Needham's wartime activities, shedding light on the roles played by photographs in those diplomatic activities and his onward dissemination of them as part of his self-fashioning. Images were important to the British biochemist, and he was an avid amateur photographer himself, amassing a unique collection of hundreds of images relating to science, technology and medicine in wartime China during his time working as director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office. These included ones produced by China's Nationalist Party-led government, and by the Chinese Communist Party. Focusing on these photographs, this article examines the way Joseph Needham used his experiences to underpin claims to authority which, together with the breadth of his networks, enabled him to establish himself as an international interlocutor. All three aspects formed essential parts of his science diplomacy.
