Abstract:In one of the very few exact quantum mechanical calculations of fugacity coefficients, Dodd and Gibbs (\textit{J. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Math.Phys" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>}.,\textbf{15}, 41 (1974)) obtained $b_{2}$ and $b_{3}$ for a one dimensional Bose gas, subject to repulsive delta-function interactions, by direct integration of the wave functions. For $b_{2}$, we have shown (\textit{Mol. Phys}.,\textbf{103}, 1301 (2005)) that Dodd and Gibbs' result can be obtained from a phase shift formalism, if one also includes the contribution of oscillating terms, usually contributing only in 1 dimension. Now, we develop an exact expression for $b_{3}-b_{3}^{0}$ (where $b_{3}^{0}$ is the free particle fugacity coefficient) in terms of sums and differences of 3-body eigenphase shifts. Further, we show that if we obtain these eigenphase shifts in a distorted-Born approximation, then, to first order, we reproduce the leading low temperature behaviour, obtained from an expansion of the two-fold integral of Dodd and Gibbs. The contributions of the oscillating terms cancel. The formalism that we propose is not limited to one dimension, but seeks to provide a general method to obtain virial coefficients, fugacity coefficients, in terms of asymptotic quantities. The exact one dimensional results allow us to confirm the validity of our approach in this domain.

Abstract:We derive the exact general form of the equation of state, in the fugacity format, for the two-dimensional Coulomb gas. Our results are valid in the conducting phase of the Coulomb gas, for temperatures above the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The derivation of the equation of state is based on the knowledge of the general form of the short-distance expansion of the correlation functions of the Coulomb gas. We explicitly compute the expansion up to order $O(\zeta^6)$ in the activity $\zeta$. Our results are in very good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations at very low density.

Abstract:The method developed in the previous paper for the treatment of the quantum-mechanical $N$-body hard-sphere problem is applied to a calculation of the grand partition function of an imperfect Bose gas with hard-sphere interactions. The grand partition function is calculated to second order in an expansion in powers of $\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, where $a$ is the hard-sphere diameter and $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ the thermal wavelength. The approximate equation of state for the gas phase is thereby obtained by calculating all the virial coefficients to order ${(\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}})}^{2}$.The first-order energy levels obtained in the previous paper embody some interesting physical properties. A fictitious system with exactly such energy levels is considered. The partition function for such a system can be calculated exactly and the exact equation of state obtained. It is shown that there is a phase transition, which more closely resembles an ordinary gas-liquid transition than the Bose-Einstein condensation.

Abstract:Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension are studied in detail on the basis of an exact solution. Corresponding to three possible choices of the referecce state in the quantum inverse scattering method, three sets of Bethe-ansatz equations are derived explicitly. The features of the ground state and low-lying excitations are investigated. The ground state phase diagram caused by the external field and chemical potential is obtained.

Abstract:We present an exact field theoretical representation of the statistical mechanics of classical hard-core Coulomb systems. This approach generalizes the usual sine-Gordon theory valid for point-like charges or lattice systems to continuous Coulomb fluids with additional short-range interactions. This formalism is applied to derive the equation of state of the restricted primitive model of electrolytes in the low fugacity regime up to order $\rho^{5/2}$ ($\rho$ number density). We recover the results obtained by Haga by means of Mayer graphs expansions.

Abstract:The paper is a continuation of our previous work on the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation for Bose–Einstein particles with quantum collision kernel that includes the hard sphere model. Solutions F_t under consideration that conserve the mass, momentum, and energy and converge at least weakly to equilibrium F_be as t→∞ have been proven to exist at least for isotropic initial data that have positive entropy, and F_t have to be Borel measures for the case of low temperature. The new progress is as follows: we prove that the long time convergence of F_t({0}) to the Bose–Einstein condensation F_be({0}) holds for all isotropic initial data F_0 satisfying the low temperature condition. This immediately implies the long time strong convergence to equilibrium. We also obtain an algebraic rate of the strong convergence for arbitrary temperature. Our proofs are based on entropy control, positive lower bound of entropy, Villani’s inequality for entropy dissipation, a suitable time-dependent convex combination between the solution and a fixed positive function (in order to deal with logarithm terms), the convex-positivity of the cubic collision integral, and an iteration technique for obtaining a positive lower bound of condensation.

Abstract:CO2 is a potential fluid for absorbing and accumulating thermal energy; an accurate and fast calculation method for the heat capacity is essential for the study of the flow state near the critical point. However, the calculation of the heat capacity near the critical point by the equations suggested by NIST can easily be divergent, such as for CO2, nitrogen, methane, etc. Therefore, an explicit fitting equation was studied. The fitting equation, which used density and temperature as variables and contained three constants, was derived from the nature of heat capacity change (molecular kinetic energy and potential energy). Based on the heat capacity data of the NIST WebBook, the heat capacity of CO2 is taken as the example for the equation deduction and parameter fitting. The three constants were defined in order by Origin fitting software. By this new approach, it is found that the heat capacity at the critical point is below 1% deviant from that of the NIST WebBook. Moreover, the heat capacities that are difficult to be calculated in the NIST WebBook are well calculated. The study shows that the fitting equation is efficient for the prediction of heat capacity of gases near the critical point.

Abstract:For a system of $N$ fermions of spin $1/2$, with its interaction potential of scattering length $a$, the classical Huang-Yang formula state that the energy density $e(\rho)$ is of the form \begin{equation*} e(\rho)=\frac{3}{5}(3\pi^2)^{\frac{2}{3}}\rho^{\frac{5}{3}}+2\pi a\rho^2 +\frac{12}{35}(11-2\ln2)3^{\frac{1}{3}}\pi^{\frac{2}{3}}a^2\rho^{\frac{7}{3}} +o(\rho^{\frac{7}{3}}). \end{equation*} We consider a general system of $N$ fermions of spin $1/\mathbf{q}$ with the scattering length of the interaction potential at the scale $a=N^{-1}$ i.e. in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We prove the 2nd order ground state energy approximation corresponding to the Huang-Yang formula. This is a preliminary version of the paper including the main structure of the proof and the computation of the Huang-Yang formula. The full papaer including all Lemmas' proofs and a more proper introduction will be uploaded soon. The thermodynamic limit case shares a similar logic, and could be dealt with in a separate paper.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the equation of state and Tan's contact of a non-degenerate three dimensional Bose gas near a broad Feshbach resonance, within the framework of large-N expansion. Our results agree with the path-integral Monte Carlo simulations in the weak-coupling limit and recover the second-order virial expansion predictions at strong interactions and high temperatures. At resonance, we find that the chemical potential and energy are significantly enhanced by the strong repulsion, while the entropy does not change significantly. With increasing temperature, the two-body contact initially increases and then decreases like T^-1 at large temperature, and therefore exhibits a peak structure at about 4T_c0, where T_c0 is the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of an ideal, non-interacting Bose gas. These results may be experimentally examined with a non-degenerate unitary Bose gas, where the three-body recombination rate is substantially reduced. In particular, the non-monotonic temperature dependence of the two-body contact could be inferred from the momentum distribution measurement.

Abstract:Analytical equations of state for boson and fermion hard-sphere fluids ranging from very low to very high densities are constructed. Such equations of state serve as a zero-order (reference) state upon which to build so-called quantum-thermodynamic-perturbation corrections in describing real but simple quantum fluids at zero temperature. The fluid branch extrapolations from the exact low-density series expansions for the energy are carried out by incorporating various physical arguments, such as close packing densities and residues. Modified London equations of state for the high-density crystalline branch agree very well with computer simulations, and at close packing with certain experimental results at high pressure.
A Fundamental-Measure Theory for Inhomogeneous Associating Fluids

Abstract:The fundamental-measure theory (FMT) of Rosenfeld for hard spheres is extended to inhomogeneous associating fluids on the basis of Wertheim’s first-order thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT1). The excess intrinsic Helmholtz energy, which includes contributions from hard-sphere repulsion and from intermolecular bonding, is represented as a functional of three weighted densities that are related to the geometry of spherical particles. In the absence of association, this theory is the same as the original FMT, and at bulk conditions it reduces to TPT1. In comparison with Monte Carlo simulation results, the extended fundamental-measure theory provides good descriptions of the density profiles and adsorption isotherms of associating hard spheres near a hard wall. Calculated results indicate that the critical temperatures for the vapor–liquid equilibria of associating fluids in hard slit pores are suppressed compared with that for the bulk fluid and the confinement has more significant impact on the liquid side than the vapor side of the coexistence curve. Unlike nonpolar fluids at similar conditions, saturated associating liquids in hard slit pores do not exhibit strong layering near the solid surface.

Abstract:We study the analyticity of the partition function of the hard hexagon model in the complex fugacity plane by computing zeros and transfer matrix eigenvalues for large finite size systems. We find that the partition function per site computed by Baxter in the thermodynamic limit for positive real values of the fugacity is not sufficient to describe the analyticity in the full complex fugacity plane. We also obtain a new algebraic equation for the low density partition function per site.

Abstract:We prove the equivalence between the hard-sphere Bose gas and a system with momentum-dependent zero-range interactions in one spatial dimension, which we call extended hard-sphere Bose gas. The two-body interaction in the latter model has the advantage of being a regular pseudopotential. The most immediate consequence is the existence of its Fourier transform, permitting the formulation of the problem in momentum space, not possible with the original hard-core interaction. In addition, in the extended system, interactions are defined in terms of the scattering length, positive or negative, identified with the hard-sphere diameter only when it is positive. We are then able to obtain, directly in the thermodynamic limit, the ground-state energy of the strongly repulsive Lieb-Liniger gas and, more importantly, the energy of the lowest-lying super Tonks-Girardeau gas state with finite, strongly attractive interactions, in perturbation theory from the novel extended hard-sphere Bose gas.

3D hard sphere Boltzmann equation: explicit structure and the transition process from polynomial tail to Gaussian tail

Abstract:We study the Boltzmann equation with hard sphere in a near-equilibrium setting. The initial data is compactly supported in the space variable and has a polynomial tail in the microscopic velocity. We show that the solution can be decomposed into a particle-like part (polynomial tail) and a fluid-like part (Gaussian tail). The particle-like part decays exponentially in both space and time, while the fluid-like part corresponds to the behavior of the compressible Navier-Stokes equation, which dominates the long time behavior and exhibits rich wave motion. The nonlinear wave interactions in the fluid-like part are precisely characterized and therefore we are able to distinguish the linear and nonlinear wave of the solution. It is notable that although the solution has polynomial tail in the velocity initially, the transition process from the polynomial to the Gaussian tail can be quantitatively revealed due to the collision with the background global Maxwellian.
