Abstract:A formulation is given whereby the grand partition function of a many-body system satisfying Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics is expressed in terms of certain $U$ functions defined for the same system with Boltzmann statistics. It is then shown that these $U$ functions can be evaluated in successive approximations in terms of a binary kernel $B$ which can be computed from a solution of the two-body problem. The approach to the limit of infinite volume is studied. The example of a hard sphere interaction is discussed in some detail.

Abstract:The formulation of the previous paper (paper IV) is extended so that it becomes applicable in an interacting system in the presence of a Bose-Einstein degeneracy. This extension is carried out by the introduction of an $x$-ensemble, which enables one to utilize an Ursell-type expansion even in the presence of a Bose-Einstein degeneracy. The variational principle of the previous paper is also extended. It is proved that in the presence of a Bose-Einstein degeneracy, the average occupation number of a single particle state with momentum p approaches infinity as p\\ensuremath{\\rightarrow}0. The method is applied to a dilute system of Bose hard spheres.

Abstract:Starting from Rules $A$ and $B$ of a previous paper (I), it is shown that the grand partition function can be evaluated in terms of the statistical averages of the occupation number in momentum space. The final formulation is in terms of a simple variational principle. The procedure represents a concise and complete separation of the effect of the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistical character of the particles from the dynamical problem. In the case of Bose statistics, this formulation makes possible a systematic computation of all thermodynamic functions near the Bose-Einstein transition point in the gaseous phase. Applications to a system of hard spheres are discussed.

Abstract:The system under consideration is an $N$-particle quantum-mechanical system enclosed in a volume $V$, in which the particles interact via two-body hard-sphere potentials, with hard-sphere diameter $a$. The two-body hard-sphere problem is first discussed by a generalization of Fermi's pseudopotential by means of which the problem is formulated entirely in terms of the scattering phase shifts. It is then shown that a pseudopotential for the $N$-body problem can be introduced, and leads to an expansion of the energy levels of the system in powers of $a$. The first order energy levels of a Bose and a Fermi system are calculated. For the Bose system, the first order energy formula exhibits an "energy gap" above the ground state, leading to properties of the system not dissimilar to that of a superfluid. The ground state energy for a Bose system is calculated to order ${a}^{3}$ and that for the Fermi system, to order ${a}^{2}$. The physical interpretation and validity of these results are discussed.

Abstract:The method developed in the previous paper for the treatment of the quantum-mechanical $N$-body hard-sphere problem is applied to a calculation of the grand partition function of an imperfect Bose gas with hard-sphere interactions. The grand partition function is calculated to second order in an expansion in powers of $\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}}$, where $a$ is the hard-sphere diameter and $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ the thermal wavelength. The approximate equation of state for the gas phase is thereby obtained by calculating all the virial coefficients to order ${(\frac{a}{\ensuremath{\lambda}})}^{2}$.The first-order energy levels obtained in the previous paper embody some interesting physical properties. A fictitious system with exactly such energy levels is considered. The partition function for such a system can be calculated exactly and the exact equation of state obtained. It is shown that there is a phase transition, which more closely resembles an ordinary gas-liquid transition than the Bose-Einstein condensation.
Virial expansion for a strongly correlated Fermi system and its application to ultracold atomic Fermi gases

Abstract:Strongly correlated Fermi system plays a fundamental role in very different areas of physics, from neutron stars, quark-gluon plasmas, to high temperature superconductors. Despite the broad applicability, it is notoriously difficult to be understood theoretically because of the absence of a small interaction parameter. Recent achievements of ultracold trapped Fermi atoms near a Feshbach resonance have ushered in enormous changes. The unprecedented control of interaction, geometry and purity in these novel systems has led to many exciting experimental results, which are to be urgently understood at both low and finite temperatures. Here we review the latest developments of virial expansion for a strongly correlated Fermi gas and their applications on ultracold trapped Fermi atoms. We show remarkable, quantitative agreements between virial predictions and various recent experimental measurements at about the Fermi degenerate temperature. For equation of state, we discuss a practical way of determining high-order virial coefficients and use it to calculate accurately the long-sought third-order virial coefficient, which is now verified firmly in experiments at ENS and MIT. We discuss also virial expansion of a new many-body paramter - Tan's contact. We then turn to less widely discussed issues of dynamical properties. For dynamic structure factor, the virial prediction agrees well with the measurement at the Swinburne University of Technology. For single-particle spectral function, we show that the expansion up to the second order accounts for the main feature of momentum-resolved rf-spectroscopy for a resonantly interacting Fermi gas, as recently reported by JILA. In the near future, more practical applications with virial expansion are possible, owing to the ever-growing power in computation.

Abstract:Within a quantum virial expansion, we investigate theoretically the violation of universal thermodynamics for a strongly interacting unitary Fermi gas trapped in a harmonic potential. The violation is caused by the existence and anisotropy of the trapping potential and a finite-range of the two-body interaction. We calculate the second virial coefficient by solving a two-fermion problem in 3D uniform harmonic traps, as well as in anisotropic traps. In the unitarity limit, the universal value of the trapped second virial coefficient is 1/4. We discuss in detail the non-universal correction to the second virial coefficient and to the equation of state.
High-order Virial Coefficients and Equation of State for Hard Sphere and Hard Disk Systems

Abstract:A very simple and accurate approach is proposed to predict the high-order virial coefficients of hard spheres and hard disks. In the approach, the nth virial coefficient B(n) is expressed as the sum of n(D-1) and a remainder, where D is the spatial dimension of the system. When n > or = 3, the remainders of the virials can be accurately expressed with Padé-type functions of n. The maximum deviations of predicted B(5)-B(10) for the two systems are only 0.0209%-0.0044% and 0.0390%-0.0525%, respectively, which are much better than the numerous existing approaches. The virial equation based on the predicted virials diverges when packing fraction eta = 1. With the predicted virials, the compressibility factors of hard sphere system can be predicted very accurately in the whole stable fluid region, and those in the metastable fluid region can also be well predicted up to eta = 0.545. The compressibility factors of hard disk fluid can be predicted very accurately up to eta = 0.63. The simulated B(7) and B(10) for hard spheres are found to be inconsistent with the other known virials and therefore they are modified as 53.2467 and 105.042, respectively.

Abstract:We study the statistical properties of a two-dimensional gas of free anyons with spin. The concept of ''spin' carried by anyons has been discussed in detail based on the two-dimensional Dirac equation. The second virial coefficient B2 for the gas is evaluated and is found that it is the result of Arovas et al.[1] but not the result of Blum et al.[2] that is recovered, which is periodical for the statistical parameter alpha with the length DELTAalpha = 2.

Abstract:We develop a graphical method for computing the virial expansion coefficients for a nonrelativistic quantum field theory. As an example we compute the third virial coefficient b3 for unitary fermions, a nonperturbative system. By calculating several graphs and performing an extrapolation, we arrive at b3 =-0.2930, within 0.7% of a recent computation b3 = -0.29095295 by Liu, Hu and Drummond, which involved summing 10,000 energy levels for three unitary fermions in a harmonic trap.

Abstract:This work explores fundamental statistical and thermodynamic properties of short-and long-range-interacting systems. The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, we rigorously prove that the probability distribution of arbitrary few-body observables is restricted by a Gaussian concentration bound (or Chernoff--Hoeffding inequality) above some threshold temperature. This bound is then derived for arbitrary Gibbs states of systems that include long-range interactions Secondly, we establish a quantitative relationship between the concentration bound of the Gibbs state and the equivalence of canonical and micro-canonical ensembles. We then evaluate the difference in the averages of thermodynamic properties between the canonical and the micro-canonical ensembles. Under the assumption of the Gaussian concentration bound on the canonical ensemble, the difference between the ensemble descriptions is upper-bounded by $\left[n^{-1} \log (n^{3/2}\Delta^{-1})\right]^{1/2}$ with $n$ being the system size and $\Delta$ being the width of the energy shell of the micro-canonical ensemble This limit gives a non-trivial upper bound \textit{exponentially small energy width} with respect to the system size. By combining these two results, we prove the ensemble equivalence as well as the weak eigenstate thermalization in arbitrary long-range-interacting systems above a threshold temperature.

Abstract:One of quantum physics's fundamental, but largely unsolved, problems is the computation of the correlation functions in many-body systems. In this paper we address this problem in the case of one-dimensional spinor gases with repulsive contact interactions in the presence of a confining potential. We take advantage of the fact that in the strong coupling limit, the wavefunction factorizes with the charge degrees of freedom expressed as a Slater determinant of spinless fermions and the spin sector described by a spin chain of Sutherland type with exchange coefficients that depend only on the trapping potential. This factorization is also present in the expressions for the correlation functions. Still, analytical and numerical investigations were hindered by the fact that the local exchange coefficients and the charge component of the correlators are expressed as $N-1$ multidimensional integrals, with $N$ the number of particles, which are notoriously hard to compute using conventional methods. We introduce a new approach to calculating these integrals that is extremely simple, scales polynomially with the number of particles, and is several orders of magnitude faster than the previous methods reported in the literature. This allows us to investigate the static and dynamic properties, temperature dependence, and nonequilibrium dynamics for systems with larger number of particles than previously considered and discover new phenomena. We show that, contrary to natural expectations, the momentum distribution of strongly interacting trapped spinor gases becomes narrower as we increase the temperature and derive simple determinant representations for the correlators in the spin incoherent regime valid for both equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations.

Abstract:We present a field theoretic method for the calculation of the second and third virial coefficients b2 and b3 of 2-species fermions interacting via a contact interaction. The method is mostly analytic. We find a closed expression for b3 in terms of the 2 and 3-body T-matrices. We recover numerically, at unitarity, and also in the whole BEC-BCS crossover, previous numerical results for the third virial coefficient b3.

Abstract:From the unified statistical thermodynamics of quantum gases, the virial coefficients of ideal Bose and Fermi gases which are trapped under generic power law potential are derived systematically. From the general result of virial coefficients, one can produce the known results in $d=3$ and $d=2$. But more importantly we found that, the virial coefficients of bosons and fermions become equal (except the the second virial coefficient, where the sign is different) when we trap the gases under harmonic potential in $d=1$. This result suggests the equivalence between Bose and Fermi gases which is already established for $d=1$ by M M Faruk (J Stat Phys, DOI <a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1007/s10955-015-1344-4" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s10955-015-1344-4" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1007/s10955-015-1344-4</a>). Surprisingly our investigation also shows that the virial coefficients of two dimensional free quantum gases are identical to the virial coefficients of one dimensional harmonically trapped quantum gases.

Abstract:In one of the very few exact quantum mechanical calculations of fugacity coefficients, Dodd and Gibbs (\textit{J. <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Math.Phys" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>}.,\textbf{15}, 41 (1974)) obtained $b_{2}$ and $b_{3}$ for a one dimensional Bose gas, subject to repulsive delta-function interactions, by direct integration of the wave functions. For $b_{2}$, we have shown (\textit{Mol. Phys}.,\textbf{103}, 1301 (2005)) that Dodd and Gibbs' result can be obtained from a phase shift formalism, if one also includes the contribution of oscillating terms, usually contributing only in 1 dimension. Now, we develop an exact expression for $b_{3}-b_{3}^{0}$ (where $b_{3}^{0}$ is the free particle fugacity coefficient) in terms of sums and differences of 3-body eigenphase shifts. Further, we show that if we obtain these eigenphase shifts in a distorted-Born approximation, then, to first order, we reproduce the leading low temperature behaviour, obtained from an expansion of the two-fold integral of Dodd and Gibbs. The contributions of the oscillating terms cancel. The formalism that we propose is not limited to one dimension, but seeks to provide a general method to obtain virial coefficients, fugacity coefficients, in terms of asymptotic quantities. The exact one dimensional results allow us to confirm the validity of our approach in this domain.

Abstract:In recent years it has been shown for hard sphere gas that, by retaining the correlation information, dynamical fluctuation and large deviation of empirical measure around Boltzmann equation could be proved, in addition to the classical kinetic limit result by Lanford. After taking low-density limit, the correlation information can be encoded into a functional Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The results above are restricted to short time. This paper establishes global-in-time construction of a solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, by analyzing a system of coupled Boltzmann equations. The global solution converges to a non-trivial stationary solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the long-time limit under proper assumptions.

Abstract:We consider a two-component ideal Fermi gas in an isotropic harmonic potential. Some eigenstates have a wavefunction that vanishes when two distinguishable fermions are at the same location, and would be unaffected by s-wave contact interactions between the two components. We determine the other, interaction-sensitive eigenstates, using a Faddeev ansatz. This problem is nontrivial, due to degeneracies and to the existence of unphysical Faddeev solutions. As an application we present a new conjecture for the fourth-order cluster or virial coefficient of the unitary Fermi gas, in good agreement with the numerical results of Blume and coworkers.
