Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) catalysts with high catalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity have been extensively studied, especially Fe and Co-based sulfides. Fe and Co active sites with a strong synergistic effect, which can adjust the electron density distribution and effectively improve the electrocatalytic OER activity. However, TMSs have poor stability in alkaline environment caused by metal ions and sulfur elements are facilitated to dissolve. In this work, TMSs was modified by polyaniline (PANI) to inhibit the precipitation of iron, cobalt, and sulfur elements and enhance its stability under alkaline conditions. Moreover, π-d structure can also be formed by the coating of PANI, which can further adjust its own electronic structure on the basis of stabilizing the TMSs structure, so as to improve the electrochemical performance, rendering them to stably operate at harsh environment for more than 90 h. These findings offer new guidance for improving the electrocatalytic stability of TMSs.
Controlled Chelation Between Tannic Acid and Fe Precursors to Obtain N, S Co-Doped Carbon with High Density Fe-single Atom-Nanoclusters for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Zn-air Batteries

Abstract:In this work, three-dimensional N, S co-doped carbon with high density Fe-single atom-nanoclusters of homogeneous dispersion (N, S co-doped CPANI-TA-FeFe-SA-NC catalysts) is successfully prepared by the optimal pyrolysis of freeze-dried polyaniline (PANI) hydrogels containing homogeneously distributed Fe precursors due to the controlled chelation between tannic acid (TA) and ferric ions and the interaction between Fe precursors and PANI for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. More importantly, active species (such as Fe single atoms, Fe-SA-NCs and Fe NPs) in the 3D N, S co-doped carbon materials can be controlled by judiciously adjusting the Fe-to-TA molar ratios. High density Fe-SA-NCs as active species (up to 5.6 wt%) in the N, S co-doped carbon are realized by controlling the Fe-to-TA molar ratio at 10. In addition, these Fe-SA-NCs are composed of isolated Fe-SAs, which are separated by the coordination with four N atoms and two O atoms. The resulting N, S co-doped CPANI-TA-FeFe-SA-NC catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) exhibit a higher half-wave potential (0.923 Vvs.0.88 V of Pt/C), a higher onset potential (1.09 Vvs.0.99 V of Pt/C), a higher kinetic-limiting current density (12 mA cm(-2)at 0.9 V) and better long-term stability in alkaline media. Their ORR activity in acidic media is comparable to those recently reported in the literature. Additionally, the suitability and durability of N, S co-doped CPANI-TA-FeFe-SA-NC catalysts as the air electrode of a zinc-air battery were investigated. The fabricated Zn-air batteries exhibited a higher power density of 136.4 mW cm(-2)and a higher specific capacity of 795.1 mA h g(-1), which are better than those of the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C catalyst. Our synthetic strategy can be extended to prepare other metal nanocluster-based porous carbon materials as electrocatalysts in electrochemical energy devices, as TA can be chelated with diverse metal ions.
High Catalytic Activity of Magnetic FeOx/NiOy/SBA-15: the Role of Ni in the Bimetallic Oxides at the Nanometer Level

Abstract:Recently, great efforts have been devoted for improving the catalytic activity of the iron-based bimetallic oxide catalysts by taking advantage of the synergistic effects between Fe and the second metal. Herein, we report the preparation of a highly active and magnetic nickel iron Fenton-like catalyst by fabricating uniform and highly dispersed mixed phase FeOx/NiOy in mesoporous material SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous-15). This bimetallic oxide catalyst achieved 99.3% removal of the dye Acid Red 73 in 1 h, while monometallic loaded catalysts reached 29.2% and 21.9% only. Besides, 65.81% TOC removal of Acid Red 73 (initial concentration of H2O2 was 4.0 mM) and more than 95% utilization efficiency of H2O2 were obtained by FeOx/NiOy/SBA-15 in 1 h, which were much higher than the traditional Fe2+ catalyst (only 49.81% and 28.56%, respectively). At last, this catalyst showed good reusability and can be easily separated by using a magnet. Characterization results confirmed that iron species including Fe3O4 and Fe2O3, nickel species including Ni(0) and NiO coexisted in the synthesized FeOx/NiOy/SBA-15. The test results and mechanism analysis showed that nickel species have positive contributions to the high catalytic activity of this catalyst. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
In-situ Reduction-Passivation Synthesis of Magnetic Octahedron Accumulated by Fe@Fe3O4-C Core@complex-Shell for the Activation of Persulfate

Abstract:The iron-based heterogeneous catalysts, especially the zero valent iron (ZVI) is an eco-friendly and cost-effective activator for persulfate (PS) excitation. However, the oxidation of surface ZVI reduces its service lifetime. Herein, a series of magnetic octahedrons accumulated by Fe@Fe3O4 -C core@complex-shell were constructed by in-situ reduction-passivation of the MIL-101(Fe). The catalysts exhibited good activity, high stability and magnetic recyclability. The optimized Fe@Fe3O4-C-60 with largest proportion of active iron achieved a 100 % conversion of Rhodamine B (RhB) within 4 min and high mineralization efficiency of 667.34 % in 30 min. Moreover, Fe@Fe3O4-C-60 maintained its activity even after 3 times of cycling test and could be easily magnetic separation. The rate constant was 1.23 min(-1) for Fe@Fe3O4-C-60+PS in first 3 min, which was 1.6, 5 and 323 times of Fe-0+PS, FeSO4+PS and Fe3O4+PS. Fe-0 and Fe2+ were identified as active sites for SO4 center dot- generating, while the carbon shell was responsible for the high stability. The synergistic effect between Fe-0 core and Fe3O4-C complex shell realized the sustained regeneration of active surface Fe2+ and inhibition leaching of Fe.

Abstract:The prepared copper iodide nanoparticles were impregnated on the support of ferrite nanoparticles functionalized with polyaniline, resulting in a magnetically recoverable heterogeneous nanocomposite. The activity of the prepared nanocomposite was investigated in the synthesis of propargylamine derivatives via A3 coupling under mild conditions. Techniques such as FESEM, EDAX, XRD, XPS, TEM, BET and FTIR were used to characterize the effective and unique heterogeneous Fe3O4/PANI/CuI nanocomposite developed in this work. This method used in the current study has several advantages, including a short reaction time, neat conditions, good product yield, ideal green matrices values, reusability for up to seven cycles, and magnetic retrievability.

Abstract:Novel molybdenum disulfide nanosheets–decorated polyaniline (MoS2/PANI) was synthesized and investigated as an efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Compared with MoS2, MoS2/PANI nanocomposites exhibited higher catalytic activity and lower Tafel slope for HER in H2SO4 solution. The amount of 19wt% PANI for coupling with MoS2 resulted in a high current density of 80mAcm−2 at 400mV (vs. RHE). In addition, the optimal MoS2/PANI nanocomposite showed impressive long-term stability even after 500 cycles. The enhanced catalytic activity of MoS2/PANI nanocomposites was primarily ascribed to the effective electron transport channels of PANI and the increase of electrochemically accessible surface area in composite materials, which was advantageous to facilitate the charge transfer at catalyst/electrolyte interface.
Fe Single-Atom Catalyst for Cost-Effective yet Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Fenton Catalysis.

Abstract:High energy consumption in pyrolyzing precursors for catalyst preparation would limit the application of nitrogen-doped carbon-based single-atom catalysts in actual pollutant remediation. Herein, we report an Fe single atom (7.67 wt %) loaded polyaniline catalyst (Fe-PANI) prepared via a simple impregnation process without pyrolysis. Both experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that isolated -N═ group sites can fasten Fe atoms through Fe-N coordination in PANI, leading to a high stability of Fe atoms in a heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Highly dispersive yet dense -N═ groups in PANI can be protonated to be adsorption sites, which largely reduce the migration distance between reactive radicals and organics. More significantly, frontier molecular orbitals and spin-density distributions reveal that electrons can transfer from reduction groups of PANI to an Fe(III) site to accelerate its reduction. As a result, a remarkably boosted degradation behavior of organics under near-neutral conditions (pH 6), with low H2O2 concentration, was achieved. This cost-effective Fe-PANI catalyst with high catalytic activity, stability, and adsorption performance has great potential for industrial-level wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Development of efficient, inexpensive and recyclable catalysts for a reaction under mild and green reaction conditions is still a very marvelous topic. In this work, diphenyl diselenide stabilized on magnetic chitosan as a novel, highly efficient, ecologically safe, cost-effective and magnetically recoverable heterogeneous nano-biocatalyst was prepared and characterized by different techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Then, the catalytic activity of resultant nano-biocatalyst was effectively appraised for the chemoselective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides using H2O2 as a green oxidant at ambient temperature with a good to high yields without use any organic solvents. Additionally, the easily preparation from cheap and commercially available reagent, carrying out the reactions in the eco-friendly and mild conditions, short reaction times, easy separation from reaction mixture, recoverability and reusability of catalyst for four consecutive cycles without a significant degradation in catalytic activity, are some prominent advantages of this novel catalyst. These advantages make it a potential candidate to address the industrial needs and economic and environmental concerns.

Abstract:In this research, the design, and synthesis of ZnFe2O4@SiO2@L-Lisin@Cr-EDTA coordination polymer magnetic nanoparticles as a novel, recyclable, and heterogeneous catalyst was developed. EDTA with four carboxylic groups as an outstanding chelating agent was utilized for the preparation of the Cr-EDTA metal-organic framework (Cr-EDTA coordination polymer). In the next step, by immobilizing the synthesized Cr-EDTA coordination polymer on the surface of the Zinc ferrite nanoparticles, ZnFe2O4@SiO2@L-Lisin@Cr-EDTA coordination polymer was synthesized. The magnetic nanocatalyst (ZnFe2O4@SiO2@L-Lisin@Cr-EDTA coordination polymer) was characterized by using various methods such as BET, FTIR, SEM, XRD, EDX, TGA, VSM, and Map analysis. Also, the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxide was efficiently performed using the ZnFe2O4@SiO2@L-Lisin@Cr-EDTA coordination polymer catalytic system. The synthesized catalyst can be reused for five periods without loss of catalytic activity.

Abstract:Abstract The electronic structure of active sites is of importance for catalysts to achieve an optimized interaction with the intermediates. In this study, a unique organic–inorganic hybrid oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalyst composed of electrochemically inactive conducting polyaniline (PANI) and non-precious Fe-based oxide Fe 3 O 4 is presented. PANI molecules were in situ loaded on Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles through an efficient and simple process under mild conditions. The electronic structure of Fe 3 O 4 was modulated by creating a strong interaction with PANI molecules, leading to enhanced activity and stability of the catalyst to achieve 10 mA cm −2 geometrical current density at overpotential of 265 mV in 1 M aqueous KOH solution. This work demonstrates that a highly efficient electrocatalyst can be achieved by molecular modification and provides a novel strategy for the optimization of the inactive non-precious catalysts.

Abstract:Sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-) based advanced oxidation processes allow efficient degradation of refractory organics, but efficient, low-cost, and robust catalysts for such processes are still lacking. In this work, a magnetically recoverable heterogeneous catalyst was fabricated by immobilizing spinel cobalt-ferrite (CoFe2O4) particles on graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CNS) using a low-cost, one-step solvothermal method. In the CoFe2O4-CNS nanocomposite, the CoFe2O4 particles were evenlydistributed on the CNS surface, giving the nanocomposite a high specific surface area and significantly raised activity for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and sulfonamide degradation compared to the bare CoFe2O4 NPs, which were considerably aggregated. In addition, the CoFe2O4-CNS could be more efficiently separated under magnetic field and resuspended compared with the bare CoFe2O4 due its larger sizes and no agglomeration. A stable activity of the nanocomposite catalyst during repeated use was also demonstrated. Our results imply high potential of CoFe2O4-CNS for sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation applications.
(Electro)catalytic oxidation of sulfide and recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfide-laden streams

Abstract:MnxOy coated over TiO2 nanotube array substrate was doped with Mo and polyaniline (PANI) and applied for electrochemical desulfurization of concentrated sulfide (HS) solutions at basic pH, typical of biogas scrubbing solutions and industrial wastewater. Mo and PANI co-dopants significantly enhanced the anode activity towards sulfide oxidation and ensured its complete stability even in highly corrosive sulfide solutions (e.g., 200 mM HS). This was due to the increased electrochemically active surface area, improved coating conductivity and reduced charge transfer resistance. The (electro)catalytic oxidation of HS- demonstrated robust performance with very limited impact of different operational parameters (e.g., dissolved oxygen, anode potential, HS concentration). Due to the formation of elemental sulfur (S0) layer at the anode surface at basic pH, longer term anode usage requires its periodic removal. Chemical dissolution of S0 with toluene allows its rapid removal without affecting the anode activity, and easy recrystallization and recovery of pure sulfur.

Abstract:Iron nanoparticles, with low toxicity and many active sites, are among the materials that not only reduce waste along with green chemistry but also increase the separation power and recover the catalyst from the reaction environment. In this study, first, the surface of iron nanoparticles was silanized, and in the next step, the complex of chitosan HCl.VO 3 was placed on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CSH + VO 3 − ). This nanocatalyst is a novel, recoverable, and potent nanocatalyst with high selectivity for the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides. Various physicochemical techniques such as IR, XRD, TGA, SEM, EDX, mapping, TEM, and VSM were used to affirm the well synthesis of the catalyst. Oxidation of sulfides in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as a green oxidant and in ethanol was catalyzed by the Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @CSH + VO 3 − . All sulfoxides were achieved with high efficiency and in a short time. The notable privileges of this method include facile and economic catalyst synthesis, proper catalyst durability, great performance, simple catalyst isolation, good recovery capability, at least up to 5 times without an index drop in catalytic power.

Abstract:This article is devoted to the synthesis of a new magnetic palladium catalyst that has been immobilized on A-TT-Pd coated-magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. Such surface functionalization of magnetic particles is a promising method to bridge the gap between heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis approaches. The structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the particles were characterized through different analytical techniques, including TEM, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS, TGA-DTG, ICP, and VSM techniques. The obtained Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @A-TT-Pd performance can show excellent catalytic activity for the synthesis of diaryl ethers and oxidation of sulfides, and the corresponding products were obtained with high yields. The advantages of this catalyst include a simple test method, green reaction conditions, no use of dangerous solvents, short reaction time, low catalyst loading, and reusability. Also, the nanocatalyst was easily separated from the reaction mixture with the help of a bar magnet and recovered and reused several times without loss of stability and activity.

Abstract:Highlights Ni 3 Fe oxide, with an average size of 3.5 ± 1.5 nm, was successfully deposited onto polyaniline (PANI) support through a solvothermal strategy followed by calcination. The catalyst–support interaction between Ni 3 Fe oxide and PANI can enhance the Ni-O covalency via the interfacial Ni-N bond. Ni 3 Fe oxide/PANI-assembled Zn-air batteries achieve superior cycling life for over 400 h at 10 mA cm −2 and a low charge potential of around 1.95 V.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4/PANI core-shell composites were prepared as the support of gold catalysts. The Fe3O4 magnetic core was prepared by solvothermal reaction and coated with polyaniline (PANI) shell via in situ aniline polymerization on Fe3O4 surface. Au nanoparticles were loaded on Fe3O4/PANI composites through gold sol adsorption and in situ reduction method to prepare Fe3O4/PANI/Au(Sol) and Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ) catalysts, respectively. We found that the initial activities of Fe3O4/PANI/Au(Sol) were higher than that of Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ) due to the small size effect of Au in catalysts. Although the size of Au in Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ) was bigger than that in Fe3O4/PANI/Au(Sol), it should be noted that both of Fe3O4/PANI/Au(Sol) and Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ) possessed good catalytic recycling stability. The conversion of 4-NP was still above 97% and 99% after 15 cycles for Fe3O4/PANI/Au(Sol) and Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ), respectively. The good catalytic stability for Fe3O4/PANI/Au(In Situ) could be attributed to the stronger interaction between PANI and Au NPs. We believe that our work provides an effective strategy for the preparation of long-life catalysts and the investigations can be used to design other conductive polymers supported noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:The sluggish conversion kinetics and notorious shuttle effect of polysulfides are critical hindrances to practical implementation of lithium–sulfur batteries. Herein, bimetallic oxyhydroxide (FeNiOOH) as a functional sulfur host is proposed to overcome these obstacles. The introduction of Ni sites can modulate the electronic structure of the active sites to implement strong soluble polysulfide species immobilization and accelerate the conversion reaction kinetics of polysulfides, resulting in improved sulfur utilization and reduced polarization during the electrochemical reaction process. Benefiting from these advantages, FeNiOOH enables the sulfur cathode to deliver superior rate capability and cycling stability.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction is of significant importance for applications in energy conversion and storage. Modulation of electronic structure of catalysts is critical for improving the performance of the resulting electrodes. Here, we report a facile way to engineer the electronic structure of Ni3FeS by coating a thin polyaniline (PANI) layer for improving electrocatalytic activity for overall water splitting. Experimental investigations unveil that the strong electronic interactions between the lone electron pairs of nitrogen in PANI and d orbitals of iron, nickel in Ni3FeS result in an electron-rich structure of Ni and Fe, and consequently optimize the adsorption and desorption processes to promote the OER activity. Remarkably, the resulting PANI/Ni3FeS electrode exhibited much enhanced OER performance with a low overpotential of 143 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 and good stability. Promisingly, coupled with the reported MoNi4/MoO2 electrode, the two-electrode electrolyzer achieved a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 with a relatively low potential of 1.55V, and can generate oxygen and hydrogen bubbles steadily driven by a commercial dry battery, endowed the composite electrocatalyst with high potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Colloidal Ag particles decorated with Fe3O4 islands can be electrochemically or photochemically activated as inverse catalysts for C( sp 2 )‒H heteroarylation. The silver–iron oxide (SIO) particles are reduced into redox-active forms by cathodic charging at mild potentials or by short-term light exposure, and can be reused multiple times by magnetic cycling without further activation. A negative shift in reduction peak is attributed to an overpotential produced by surface Fe 3 O 4 which separates residual Ag ions or clusters from bulk silver. The catalytic efficiency of SIO is maintained even with acid degradation, which can be countered simply by adding water to the reaction medium.
