Abstract:Microresonators of ultrahigh quality (Q) factors represent a crucial type of photonic devices aiming at ultra-high spectral resolution, ultra-high sensitivity to the environmental perturbations, and efficient nonlinear wavelength conversions at low threshold pump powers. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microdisks of high Q factors are particularly attractive due to its large second-order nonlinear coefficient and strong electro-optic property. In this letter, we break through the long standing bottleneck in achieving the Q factors of LNOI microresonators beyond 108, which approaches the intrinsic material absorption limit of lithium niobate (LN). The ultra-high Q factors give rise to a rich family of nonlinear optical phenomena from optical parametric oscillation (OPO) to harmonics generation with unprecedented characteristics including ultra-low pump threshold, high wavelength conversion efficiency, and ultra-broad operation bandwidth. Specifically, the threshold of OPO is measured to be only 19.6 μW, and the absolute conversion efficiency observed in the second harmonic generation reaches 23%. The record-breaking performances of the on-chip ultra-high Q LNOI microresonators will have profound implication for both photonic research and industry.

Abstract:We demonstrate the generation of narrowband correlated photon pairs in a micro-rod resonator with a Q factor of $7.1 \times 10^{7}$. Correlated photon pairs with a spectral width of 2.72 MHz are obtained in our experiment.

Abstract:The conversion and interaction between quantum signals at the single-photon level are essential for scalable quantum photonic information technology. Using a fully optimized periodically poled lithium niobate microring, we demonstrate ultraefficient sum-frequency generation on a chip. The external quantum efficiency reaches (65±3)% with only (104±4)-μW pump power. At peak conversion, 3×10−5-noise photon is created during the cavity lifetime, which meets the requirement of quantum applications using single-photon pulses. Using a pump and signal in single-photon coherent states, we directly measure the conversion probability produced by a single pump photon to be 10−5, which is a significant improvement from the state of the art, and the photon-photon coupling strength to be 9.1 MHz. Our results mark steady progress toward quantum nonlinear optics at the ultimate single-photon limit, with potential applications in highly integrated photonics and quantum optical computing.

Abstract:Integrated silicon micro-ring resonator (MRR) has been widely used as on-chip single photon source. In this paper, we introduce an approach to generate frequency-degenerate photons by bidirectionally pumping an add-drop micro-ring resonator (MRR) within a Sagnac loop configuration. This scheme facilitates the concurrent generation of photon pairs from both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions, transforming a single MRR into a dual-source system. Through CMOS fabrication techniques, we realized the proposed device and conducted measurements of key parameters including the single side count rate (SSCR), coincidence count rate (CCR), and coincidence-to-accidental coincidence ratio (CAR) for both directional outputs. Notably, the CCRs exhibit remarkable similarity between the two sources, reaching approximately 550 Hz at an waveguide power of 0.59 mW. Furthermore, we observed a differential CAR, with the CCW direction yielding a lower value compared to the CW direction, with estimated maxima of 161 and 387, respectively. These findings underscore the viability of utilizing a singular MRR as a dual-source entity. Additionally, we outline the design of an on-chip structure for heralded Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interference, necessitating 4-fold coincidences.Our work holds the promise of advancing the realm of large-scale integrated quantum photonic chips.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical processes in whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to the strong confinement of light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, thereby promoting the nonlinear interaction between the light and the resonator material. However, realization of efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue. The major difficulty is to simultaneously ensure the phase matching condition and a coherent multiple resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) in an on-chip lithium niobate microresonator fabricated by femtosecond laser direct writing. We overcome the difficulty of double resonance for the phase matched pump and second harmonic waves by selectively exciting high order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Our technique opens opportunities for integrated classical and quantum photonic applications.

Abstract:High- and ultrahigh-Q whispering-gallery mode resonators have the capability to trap photons by total internal reflection for a duration ranging from nanoseconds to milliseconds. These exceptionally long photon lifetimes enhance the light–matter interactions at all scales, namely at the electronic, molecular, and lattice levels. As a consequence, nonlinear photon scattering can be triggered with very low threshold powers, down to a few microwatts. The possibility to efficiently harness photon–photon interactions with a system optimizing size, weight, power, and cost constraints has created a new, quickly thriving research area in photonics science and technology. This topic is inherently cross-disciplinary, as it stands at the intersection of nonlinear and quantum optics, crystallography, optoelectronics, and microwave photonics. From a fundamental perspective, high-Q whispering-gallery mode resonators have emerged as an ideal platform to investigate light–matter interactions in nonlinear bulk materials. From an applied viewpoint, technological applications include time-metrology, aerospace engineering, coherent optical fiber communications, or nonclassical light generation, among others. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the most recent advances in this area, which is increasingly gaining importance in contemporary photonics.

Abstract:A high-quality optical microcavity can enhance optical nonlinear effects by resonant recirculation, which provides a reliable platform for nonlinear optics research. When a soliton microcomb and a probe optical field are coexisting in a micro-resonator, a concomitant microcomb (CMC) induced by cross-phase modulation (XPM) will be formed synchronously. Here, we characterize the CMC comprehensively in a micro-resonator through theory, numerical simulation, and experimental verification. It is found that the CMCs spectra are modulated due to resonant radiation (RR) resulting from the interaction of dispersion and XPM effects. The group velocity dispersion induces symmetric RRs on the CMC, which leads to a symmetric spectral envelope and a dual-peak pulse in frequency and temporal domains, respectively, while the group velocity mismatch breaks the symmetry of RRs and leads to asymmetric spectral and temporal profiles. When the group velocity is linearly varying with frequency, two RR frequencies are hyperbolically distributed about the pump, and the probe light acts as one of the asymptotic lines. Our results enrich the CMC dynamics and guide microcomb design and applications such as spectral extension and dark pulse generation.

While nonlinear processes involving either second- ($\chi^{(2)}$) or third- $\chi^{(3)}$) order nonlinearity have been extensively studied, the interaction between these two basic nonlinear processes has seldom been reported. In this letter, we demonstrate a coherent interplay between second- and third- order nonlinear processes. The parametric ($\chi^{(2)})$ coupling to a lossy ancillary mode shortens the lifetime of the target photonic mode and suppresses its density of states, preventing the photon emissions into the target photonic mode via Zeno effect. Such effect is then used to control the stimulated four-wave mixing process and realize a suppression ratio of $34.5$.

Abstract:In this paper, 1.5 μm correlated photon pairs are generated under continuous wave (CW) pumping in a silicon micro-ring cavity with a Q factor of 8.1 × 10(4). The ratio of coincidences to accidental coincidences (CAR) is up to 200 under a coincidence time bin width of 5 ns. The experiment result of single side photon count shows that the generation rate does not increase as the square of the pump level due to the nonlinear losses in the cavity which reduce the Q factor and impact the field enhancement effect in the cavity under high pump level. Theoretical analysis shows that the photon pair generation rate in the cavity is proportional to the seventh power of the Q factor, which agrees well with the experiment result. It provides a way to analyze the performance of CW pumping correlated photon pair generation in silicon micro-ring cavities under high pump levels.

Toward 1% Single-Photon Anharmonicity with Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Microring Resonators

Abstract:The absence of the single-photon nonlinearity has been a major roadblock in developing quantum photonic circuits at optical frequencies. In this paper, we demonstrate a periodically-poled thin film lithium niobate microring resonator (PPLNMR) that reaches 5,000,000%/W second harmonic conversion efficiency---almost 20-fold enhancement over the state-of-the-art---by accessing its largest $\chi^{(2)}$ tensor component $d_{33}$ via quasi-phase matching. The corresponding single photon coupling rate $g/2\pi$ is estimated to be 1.2 MHz, which is an important milestone as it approaches the dissipation rate $\kappa/2\pi$ of best available lithium niobate microresonators developed in the community. Using a figure of merit defined as $g/\kappa$, our devices reach a single photon nonlinearity approaching 1%. We show that, by further scaling of the device, it is possible to improve the single photon nonlinearity to a regime where photon-blockade effect can be manifested.
Enhancing the Resonance Stability of a High-Q Micro/nanoresonator by an Optical Means

Abstract:High-quality optical resonators underlie many important applications ranging from optical frequency metrology, precision measurement, nonlinear/quantum photonics, to diverse sensing such as detecting single biomolecule, electromagnetic field, mechanical acceleration/rotation, among many others. All these applications rely essentially on the stability of optical resonances, which, however, is ultimately limited by the fundamental thermal fluctuations of the devices. The resulting thermo-refractive and thermo-elastic noises have been widely accepted for nearly two decades as the fundamental thermodynamic limit of an optical resonator, limiting its resonance uncertainty to a magnitude 10(-12) at room temperature.Here we report a novel approach that is able to significantly improve the resonance stability of an optical resonator. We show that, in contrast to the common belief, the fundamental temperature fluctuations of a high-Q micro/nanoresonator can be suppressed remarkably by pure optical means without cooling the device temperature, which we term as temperature squeezing. An optical wave with only a fairly moderate power launched into the device is able to produce strong photothermal backaction that dramatically suppresses the spectral intensity of temperature fluctuations by five orders of magnitudes and squeezes the overall level (root-mean-square value) of temperature fluctuations by two orders of magnitude. The proposed approach is universally applicable to various micro/nanoresonator platforms and the optimal temperature squeezing can be achieved with an optical Q around 10(6)-10(7) that is readily available in various current devices. The proposed photothermal temperature squeezing is expected to have profound impact on broad applications of high-Q cavities in sensing, metrology, and integrated nonlinear/quantum photonics.
Impact of Backscattering in Silicon Micro-Ring Resonators on Photon Pair Generation

Abstract:Backscattering in silicon micro-ring resonators is due to the side wall roughness of the waveguides, which leads to the backward coupling of light to the counter-propagating modes. In this paper, the impact of backscattering on the photon pair generation in a silicon micro-ring resonator with a quality factor (Q) of similar to 10(4) is investigated experimentally. It shows that due to the effect of backscattering, the two photons in a pair not only output from the resonator forwardly, but also both output backwardly, or even one forwardly and the other backwardly. Analysis on the coincident counts of different output port combinations shows that the effect of the pump light reflection due to the backscattering is weak. The reason for that the photon pairs output from all the port combinations is mainly due to the reflection of the generated signaL/idler photons by the backscattering in the resonator. The experiments of Franson-type interference are taken to investigate the property of energy-time entanglement in the photon pairs outputting from different directions. The experiment results show that the backscattering may impact the interference fringes, however, energy-time entanglement exists in all the cases under our experiment condition.
High-gain photon pair generation in a microring resonator with time-dependent non-perturbative effects

Abstract:In this work, we present a quantum theory for pulsed photon pair generation in a single ring resonator. Our approach combines the Heisenberg picture input-output formalism with the Ikeda mapping from classical nonlinear optics. In doing so, we address the high-gain regime by incorporating non-perturbative effects, including self-phase modulation, cross-phase modulation, and time-ordering, which are roots for significantly different behaviors in the low-gain regime. We also account for optical losses by introducing an auxiliary waveguide, allowing for a more accurate representation of experimentally viable scenarios. Numerical simulations reveal that non-perturbative effects significantly distort transfer functions, making desirable operations challenging without careful optimization. We show that appropriate detuning of the pump frequency can mitigate these issues, leading to enhanced brightness and higher spectral purity in the high-gain regime. We further investigate the performance of a single ring resonator as a two-mode squeezer by analyzing various performance metrics under experimentally relevant optical loss conditions.

Noise Performance Comparison of 1.5 um Correlated Photon Pair Generation in Different Fibers

Abstract:In this paper, the noise performances of 1.5 um correlated photon pair generations based on spontaneous four wave-mixing in three types of fibers, i.e., dispersion shifted fiber, highly nonlinear fiber, and highly nonlinear microstructure fiber are investigated experimentally. Result of the comparison shows that highly nonlinear microstructure fiber has the lowest Raman noise photon generation rate among the three types of fibers while correlated photon pair generation rate is the same. Theoretical analysis shows that the noise performance is determined by the nonlinear index and Raman response of the material in fiber core. The Raman response raises with increasing doping level, however, the nonlinear index is almost unchanged with it. As a result, highly nonlinear microstructure fiber with pure silica core has the best noise performance and has great potential in practical sources of correlated photon pairs and heralded single photons.

Self-organized spatiotemporal quasi-phase-matching in microresonators

Abstract:Quasi-phase-matching (QPM) is a widely adopted technique for mitigating stringent momentum conservation in nonlinear optical processes such as second-harmonic generation (SHG). It effectively compensates for the phase velocity mismatch between optical harmonics by introducing a periodic spatial modulation to the nonlinear optical medium. Such a mechanism has been further generalized to the spatiotemporal domain, where a non-stationary spatial QPM can induce a frequency shift of the generated light. Here we demonstrate how a spatiotemporal QPM grating, consisting in a concurrent spatial and temporal modulation of the nonlinear response, naturally emerges through all-optical poling in silicon nitride microresonators. Mediated by the coherent photogalvanic effect, a traveling space-charge grating is self-organized, affecting momentum and energy conservation, resulting in a quasi-phase-matched and Doppler-shifted second harmonic. Our observation of the photoinduced spatiotemporal QPM expands the scope of phase matching conditions in nonlinear photonics.

Abstract:Optical microresonators are ideal tools for the reduction of the threshold of optical parametric oscillation based on four-wave mixing. Usually, the efficiency and bandwidth of the resonant process are interdependent due to stringent phase matching requirements leading to limitation of the bandwidth of the spectrum generated for a given pump power. We demonstrate a continuous-wave low-threshold resonant optical parametric oscillator with optical spectral span ranging from 0.36 to 1.6 mu m. Harmonic generation is observed when a MgF2 microresonator characterized by quality factor approaching 10(10) is pumped either at 780 nm, with a standard distributed-feedback semiconductor laser, or at 698 nm, with a reflective amplifier. Pump power does not exceed 25 mW. The nonlinear process is phase matched due to. chi((3))-facilitated interaction of different mode families of the resonator. The optical harmonics generated can be used to seed high-power visible lasers, generate correlated photon pairs, and perform spectroscopy measurements. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
