Abstract:The catalyst concept of oxide-zeolite (OXZEO) has been demonstrated in an increasing number of studies to be promising to tackle the selectivity challenge in syngas conversion and CO 2 hydrogenation. While significant progress has been achieved in product selectivity control, little work has been contributed to the catalyst stability of the OXZEO catalysts, which is essential for practical applications. Herein we studied the stability of ZnMO x -SAPO-11 (M = Al, Cr, Mn) in syngas-to-gasoline, and observed slow deactivation within 100 h. The deactivation rate was estimated to be around 10-20% decrease in CO conversion in 100 h depending on different oxide components. It was shown that the crystal sizes of ZnMO x oxides increased slightly with time on stream. At the same time, accumulated carbonaceous species were also observed in the micropores of SAPO-11. A number of model reactions by exchanging the used and fresh metal oxides and zeotypes indicate that the changes of the physiochemical properties of both components during the reaction induced the decrease of CO conversion, and the increased crystal size of oxides cannot be restored while zeotypes can be regenerated by calcination in air.

Abstract:This work aims at revealing the reaction and carbon behavior of SAPO-34/ZSM-5 composite molecular sieve (SZ-TS) in MTO reaction, which is synthesized via in situ two-step crystallization method. Several tests are used to explore the structure–activity relationship of the SZ-TS. The results show that the strength of weak and medium-strong acid is suitable, the particle size of two-phase molecular sieve is decreased, the hierarchical pore structure with abundant mesoporous is formed. By using the SZ-TS in MTO reaction, the methanol conversion and light olefins selectivity are 98% and 92.7%, respectively. These results can be attributed to the interface phase effect produced by etching and dissociation on the skeleton of the nuclear phase SAPO-34. The result of in situ IR and analysis of carbon deactivation indicate that polymethylbenzene is generated as the active intermediate of MTO reaction.SZ-TS with appropriate acid sites and rich mesoporous distribution could alleviate the formation rate of methyl-substituted benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, smaller particle size can avoid the occurrence of secondary reactions of olefins, therefore displaying the excellent resistance to the carbon deposition inactivation, with a catalytic lifetime up to 1380 min.

Abstract:Abstract As a commercial MTO catalyst, SAPO-34 zeolite exhibits excellent recyclability probably due to its intrinsic good hydrothermal stability. However, the structural dynamic changes of SAPO-34 catalyst induced by hydrocarbon pool (HP) species and the water formed during the MTO conversion as well as its long-term stability after continuous regenerations are rarely investigated and poorly understood. Herein, the dynamic changes of SAPO-34 framework during the MTO conversion were identified by 1D 27 Al, 31 P MAS NMR, and 2D 31 P- 27 Al HETCOR NMR spectroscopy. The breakage of T-O-T bonds in SAPO-34 catalyst during long-term continuous regenerations in the MTO conversion could be efficiently suppressed by pre-coking. The combination of catalyst pre-coking and water co-feeding is established to be an efficient strategy to promote the catalytic efficiency and long-term stability of SAPO-34 catalysts in the commercial MTO processes, also sheds light on the development of other high stable zeolite catalyst in the commercial catalysis.

High‐Efficiency and Long‐life Synergetic Dual‐Oxide/Zeolite Catalyst for Direct Conversion of Syngas into Aromatics

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to aromatics over metal oxide‐zeolite (OX‐ZEO) composite catalysts is a novel route for efficient utilization of carbon resources. To realize a high activity with considerable selectivity to aromatics and stability, the design of synergetic OX‐ZEO catalyst to meet complex kinetics still remains a great challenge. In this work, a synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst was developed to tune the coupling between CO and H2 activation through active H species migration, by adopting ZnZrOx oxide with stable single‐layer Zn−O structure for H2 activation and CeZrOx oxide with abundant oxygen vacancies as the CO activation component. The ratio and the proximity of CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is essential for the catalyst activity and stability. The optimal catalyst 1CeZrOx‐2ZnZrOx/Z5@Si shows a superior catalytic performance with 75.6 % aromatics selectivity at a CO conversion as high as 57.5 %. After induction period, the catalyst exhibits excellent stability for 1100 h, keeping the high selectivity above 75 % with an average conversion of 43 %. This work will provide a new perspective to design a high performance and long‐life OX‐ZEO composite catalyst for direct conversion of syngas to high value chemicals. A synergetic dual‐oxide/zeolite catalyst composed of CeZrOx, ZnZrOx metal oxides and silica modified ZSM‐5 is developed for syngas conversion to aromatics, which exhibits long‐life catalytic performance with aromatics selectivity over 75 % at average CO conversion over 43 % during 1100 h of reaction. The interaction manner between CeZrOx and ZnZrOx is of vital importance in enhancing CO activation and improving the stability of the composite catalyst.

Abstract:The direct conversion of syngas to light olefins (STO) over a metal oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst has been recognized as a breakthrough development, but the bottleneck of low CO conversion efficiency still exists. Herein, we stepwise develop binary and ternary metal oxides of Zn x Cr y Mn z to reveal the roles of individual metals. Through theoretical prediction and in situ characterizations, the produced Cr1Mn1.5O4 spinel by Cr doping exhibits a higher concentration of oxygen vacancies, correlating with higher CO adsorption and catalytic activity, whereas further Zn incorporation generates the satellite ZnCr2O4 spinel around Cr1Mn1.5O4 spinel, giving higher H2 dissociation capability and extra oxygen vacancies. Coupling with SAPO-34, a stable CO conversion efficiency as high as 60.4% at the C2–C4 olefin selectivity of 76.4% is dramatically achieved during a long-term test of 160 h in the fixed bed of granulated Zn0.10Cr0.36Mn0.54/SAPO-34, providing a promising industrial application future of this STO approach.

Abstract:The urgent need for efficiency improvement in the oxide-zeolite bifunctional syngas-to-hydrocarbon catalysis necessitates in-depth mechanistic insights into this reaction, especially for the initial syngas conversion over the oxide component, which remains poor. Herein, we comprehensively investigated syngas conversion over a representative ZnAl 2 O 4 spinel oxide with state-of-the-art solid-state NMR technologies. Notably, specific surface dual active sites for syngas activation with –Al IV –OH···Zn III – structure were unambiguously identified. More importantly, the dynamic evolution of the reaction intermediates and active sites during the reaction process was elaborated at atomic level by a series of double resonance and multi-dimensional correlation NMR experiments. In combination with in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we revealed the full cycle of the formate-methoxy-based pathway for the syngas-to-methanol conversion via synergistic interplay of the dual active sites. The in-depth atomic-level understanding of the catalytic mechanism will be beneficial to further rational design of high-performance catalysts for syngas conversion.

Abstract:Two series of bifunctional catalysts CuO–ZnO/SAPO-34 were prepared by isometric impregnation and milling calcination. The catalyst samples with different composition ratios have been investigated in the direct transformation of syngas to light hydrocarbons. Furthermore, all the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD techniques. The catalytic reactions were conducted with a feeding gas mixture of CO and H2 at 320 °C and 3.0 MPa. The results indicate that the preparation methods have significant effect on the catalysts performance. Though both series of catalysts could realize the direct transformation and the catalysts prepared by the milling calcination method facilitated a little more syngas to convert, the catalysts prepared by the impregnation method led to higher light hydrocarbons selectivity and less unexpected byproduct like CO2, since these serious catalysts displayed a smaller amount of metallic solid solution, a stronger interaction between the loaded metallic particles and supportive zeolites, more appropriate acidity strength as well.

Abstract:The emerging oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysis for direct syngas conversion has drawn extensive interest, both academically and industrially, with further exploration urging a clear mechanistic understanding of this complex catalytic network. Herein, using a specially designed quasi-in situ, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance-gas chromatography/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis strategy, this reaction is fully monitored from the very early induction period to steady-state conversion under high-pressure flow-reaction conditions, using ZnAlO x /H-ZSM-5 composites as model catalysts. We identify abundant critical and/or transient intermediates in dynamic evolution, including carboxylates, alkoxyls, acid-bounded methyl-cyclopentenones and methyl-cyclopentenyl carbocations, providing direct evidence of vigorous regulation by unique, oxygenate-based pathways of the reaction network. This proposed mechanism overturns the general cognition of oxide–zeolite reactions as simple tandem catalysis, and highlights the many roles (both positive and negative) of CO and H 2 molecules via oxygenate-based routes, thus dictating the final product. The current characterization technology and its mechanistic understanding would benefit further exploration in bifunctional catalysis.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to aromatics over metal oxide and zeolite (OXZEO) composite catalysts is promising. However, the selectivity of more valuable products such as benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) is limited due to undesired secondary methylation of BTX. Herein, we report that the introduction of SAPO-34 into MnCrO x -ZSM-5 catalyst enhances significantly the formation of BTX without sacrificing the aromatics selectivity. Under optimized conditions, the fraction of BTX in aromatics reaches 64.7% versus 28.9% over the catalyst without SAPO-34. A number of model reaction tests and characterizations reveal that SAPO-34 consumes partially the intermediates such as ketene, by converting them to light olefins. Thus, the methylation of BTX by ketene to heavy aromatics is inhibited over the external acid sites of ZSM-5, leading to an enhanced BTX selectivity in the products. This hybrid catalyst provides an efficient method for highly selective synthesis of BTX from syngas.

Abstract:The oxide–zeolite (OX–ZEO) bifunctional catalyst design concept has shown promising potential for selectivity control in syngas conversion by separating CO activation and C–C coupling onto oxides and zeolites, respectively. However, the structural effects of the oxides are far from being understood. Herein, we take a single component, ZnO, as a probe oxide in combination with SAPO-34 as a composite catalyst for light olefins synthesis from syngas. The space time yield of hydrocarbons significantly increases as the ZnO crystal size decreases from 79 to 23 nm, which can be attributed to more active centers available over smaller particles with a higher specific surface area. The apparent turnover frequency (TOF) for formation of light olefins (TOFlight olefins) increases over smaller ZnO particles, whereas TOFlight paraffins decreases, leading to an increased ratio of light olefins/light paraffins, which indicates that smaller particles benefit the formation of olefins. Effects of Proximity-Dependent Metal Migration on Bifunctional Composites Catalyzed Syngas to Olefins

Abstract:The proximity of the oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalysts plays a crucial role in syngas conversion to light olefins. However, its underlying mechanism is not well understood and the optimal proximity is yet to be identified. Herein, we take ZnCrOx-SAPO-34 and MnOx-SAPO-34 as examples and show that the reaction benefits from the shortened proximity with the granules decreasing to the micrometer size due to reduced mass transport limitation. CO conversion reaches 60.0%, light olefin selectivity 75.5%, and a space time yield of light olefins 0.24 g·gcat–1·h–1 over ZnCrOx-SAPO-34. However, at nanoscale proximity, an interaction may develop between different active sites due to the migration of metal species in addition to intermediate exchange, which could modify their properties significantly. For instance, zinc species migrate to SAPO-34 and form Zn-OH preferably over Brønsted acid sites under reaction conditions, which leads to a deteriorating light olefin selectivity due to enhanced hydrogenation. This can be alleviated over zeotypes containing less acid sites. By contrast, MnOx does not migrate under reaction conditions, and the light olefin selectivity exhibits a feature of "the closer, the better" over MnOx-SAPO-34. Abstract:Controlling product selectivity still remains as a grand challenge for syngas conversion to fuels and chemicals. Herein, ZnO modified CoMn-based catalysts were prepared for direct higher oxygenates synthesis via syngas conversion, and the role of Zn promoter on catalytic behaviour and structure evolution was investigated comprehensively. It was found that the addition of Zn greatly reduced the particle size of active phases including Co and Co 2 C. Specially, the Zn promoter facilitated the formation of Co 2 C species, thus effectively tuning the surface ratio of Co/Co 2 C and strengthening the function for CO associative adsorption and insertion for oxygenates product formation. As a result, the oxygenates selectivity was enhanced to 39.1 wt% over ZnO-promoted CoMn-based catalyst, where more than 96.0 wt% of the produced oxygenates are C 2+ products. In addition, Zn promoter can weaken the chain growth ability, leading to the increase of low carbon chain products.

Abstract:Direct conversion of syngas to light olefins (C 2 = -C 4 = ) over oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst provides a new strategy for light olefins production. Herein, we report a series of bifunctional catalysts composed of SAPO-34 zeolite and Mn-doped ZnCrAlO y oxide with the Mn/Cr ratio ranging from 0 to 0.3 for directing conversion of syngas to light olefins. We achieved a C 2 = -C 4 = selectivity of 78.60% (free of CO 2 ) in all hydrocarbon products with a CO conversion of 23.53% and STY of 0.19 g/h·g cat . No obvious deactivation was observed after 220 h reaction. The impact of Mn doping on the physicochemical properties of ZnCrAlO y spinel oxides was explored by various in-situ and ex-situ characterizations. It was found that the Mn doping could decrease the particle size of ZnCrAlO y spinel, which leads to the formation of more oxygen vacancies on the surface of catalyst. The oxygen vacancies (O def /O latt ) were increased from 0.34 to 0.41 when the Mn content ranges from 0 to 0.2. The abundant oxygen vacancies are beneficial to protect more light olefins and intermediate from hydrogenation. These findings are significant for the further development of high-efficiency bifunctional catalysts for the conversion of syngas to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDThe synthesis of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons from coal or biomass-derived syngas has received increasing attention because of the resource constraints of petroleum. The present study explores direct production of hydrocarbons from syngas over bifunctional catalyst containing methanol synthesis catalyst CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 (CZA) and SAPO-34 zeolite.RESULTSThe synthesis of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons from syngas was investigated over CZA/SAPO-34 bifunctional catalyst at temperatures ranging from 240 to 440 degrees C. The results indicate that higher temperatures aggregate Cu metal and lead to the deactivation of CZA. The predominant products are dimethyl ether (DME) and methanol at temperatures from 280 to 360 degrees C and a small amount of hydrocarbons are found due to the deactivation of SAPO-34 caused by a type of coke named inert coke'. While 96.5% selectivity of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons in products of all hydrocarbons can be obtained at 400 degrees C with less coke named active coke'.CONCLUSIONReaction temperatures have significant effect on the selectivity of C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons and coke species of SAPO-34. The active coke' of poly methyl-substituted benzene/naphthalene (MB/MN) acts both as an intermediate and as coke deposition. The inert coke' of poly methyl-substituted adamantine (MA) and other groups-substituted benzene/naphthalene acts only as coke depositions. Comprehensive consideration of the characteristics of this bifunctional catalyst, shows that a moderate temperature for C-2-C-4 hydrocarbons synthesis from syngas might be approximately 400 degrees C. Abstract:The key of syngas (a mixture of CO and H-2) chemistry lies in controlled dissociative activation of CO and C-C coupling. We demonstrate here that a bifunctional catalyst of partially reducible manganese oxide in combination with SAPO-34 catalyzes the selective formation of light olefins, which validates the generality of the OX-ZEO (oxide-zeolite) concept for syngas conversion. Results from in situ ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed surface reactions reveal the critical role of oxygen vacancies on the oxide surface, where CO dissociates and is converted into surface carbonate and carbon species. They are converted to CO2 and CHx in the presence of H-2. The limited C-C coupling and hydrogenation activities of MnO enable the reaction selectivity to be controlled by the confined pores of SAPO-34. Thus, a selectivity of light olefins up to 80% is achieved, far beyond the limitation of Anderson-Shultz-Flory distribution. These findings open up possibilities to explore other active metal oxides for more efficient syngas conversion.

Abstract:Syngas chemistry has been under study since Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) was invented in the 1920s. Despite the successful applications of FTS as the core technology of coal-to-liquid and gas-to-liquid processes in industry, the product selectivity control of syngas conversion still remains a great challenge, particularly for value-added chemicals such as light olefins. Recent studies show that the catalyst design concept of OXZEO (oxide-zeolite-based composite) enables direct syngas conversion to mixed light olefins with a selectivity reaching 80% and to ethylene with a selectivity of 83% among hydrocarbons. They both well-surpass the limits predicated by the Anderson-Schultz-Flory model via the conventional FTS route (58% and 30%, respectively). Furthermore, this catalyst concept allows one-step synthesis of gasoline-range isoparaffins and aromatic compounds, which is otherwise not possible in conventional FTS. A rapidly growing number of studies demonstrate the versatility of this concept and may form a technology platform for utilization of carbon resources including coal, natural gas, and biomass via syngas to a variety of basic chemicals and fuels. However, the selectivity control mechanism is far from being understood. Therefore, we focus mainly on the catalytic roles of the bifunctionalities of OXZEO while reviewing the development of bifunctional catalysts for selective syngas conversion by taking syngas-to-light olefins as an example. With this, we intend to provide insights into the selectivity control mechanism of the OXZEO concept in order to understand the challenges and prospects for future development of much more active and more selective catalysts.

Abstract:The traditional Fischer–Tropsch synthesis generates products with a distribution that follows a theoretical restriction, suffering from low selectivity toward desired products. Recent use of metal oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysts has allowed a break of such a restriction, accompanied by residual CO molecules. In these systems, CO conversion is usually low and the presence of residual CO molecules would accompany the diffusion of intermediates into the zeolite pores and the subsequent transformation. However, the relationship between CO and the selectivity is elusive. Herein, in a CoMn oxides/H-β zeolite system, we demonstrate that CO molecules could not only improve the strength of the acidity and increase the ratio of B acid sites to L acid sites of the zeolite but also help to stabilize the intermediate allylic carbonium ion. Hence, high selectivities of 73.5% toward iso-paraffins and 61.2% toward isobutane were achieved. Abstract:Directly synthesizing olefins from syngas using metal-zeolite composite catalysts has engrossed a lot of attention recently. Fe-based catalysts will be the most promising industrial candidates due to cost and availability con-straints. In this work, we investigate the characteristics and Fischer-Tropsch activity of a novel Fe@Na-ZSM-5 composite for one-step conversion of syngas to higher olefins (C5+). The in-situ crystallization mechanism induced Na in the ZSM-5 as a Fe-based promoter which realized 52.5 % selectivity for gasoline of which similar to 70% were olefins. Additionally, the promotion by the Na ions enhanced the formation of Fe5C2 phases which in turn favored C-C coupling, high gasoline and olefins selectivity. Na type zeolite (Na-Zeolite) offers a novel Na electron promoter, which participate immensely in the development of heterogenous catalyst and functional materials.
