Abstract:In nuclear power plants (NPPs), high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes have currently become strong competitors to metallic pipes due to their excellent corrosion and fatigue resistance. Pipes deployed in NPPs have to meet high safety requirements for seismic performance. The newly built HDPE pipes in NPPs were gallery installed, and the seismic behavior of the above ground (AG) HDPE pipe was currently unclear. In this study, a full-scale section of AG HDPE pipeline in NPPs was first prepared. Subsequently, the seismic performance under safe shutdown earthquake (SSE) and operating basis earthquake (OBE) conditions was experimentally investigated through shaking table tests. The dynamic responses of pipe section including acceleration and strain responses under seismic loads were studied. It was found that the acceleration response in horizontal direction was greatly higher than in vertical direction, and the strain caused by seismic loads was minor. The pipe section could maintain structural integrity after seismic tests, and no pipe failure was observed. Furthermore, a finite element model of the HDPE pipe section was established and validated against experimental results. Based on the model, severe stress concentration was found at the 90° elbow, and the influence of clamp support on seismic performance and stress distribution was further discussed. Overall, the satisfactory seismic performance of the AG HDPE pipe was demonstrated, and the results provided a reference for safety assessment and optimal design of AG HDPE pipe under seismic load in NPPs.
