Abstract:The role of oxygen-containing groups on proton conductivity of carbon materials is still a blind area although it is of great importance in the development of proton conductors with ultrahigh proton conductivity. Here, we investigate for the first time the essential role of oxygen-containing groups on proton conductivity of graphdiyne oxides (GDYO). GDYO with similar O/C ratio but different content of oxygen-containing groups was prepared and used for the investigations. The results demonstrate that each type of oxygen-containing groups have their distinctive role in proton conduction, showing different influence towards the proton conductivity of GDYO. Specifically, C-O-C and C=O play key roles in facilitating fast proton propagation, which determines the exchange rate of protons between two active sites. O=C-OH and C-OH are essential for water adsorption, which dominate the formation of proton transport pathways and influence proton concentration. This work not only reveals the roles of oxygen-containing groups on proton conductivity but also paves a new avenue to the design of proton conductors with advanced performances.

Giant Water Uptake Enabled Ultrahigh Proton Conductivity of Graphdiyne Oxide

Abstract:AbstractProton conductors have attracted great attention in various fields, especially in energy production. Here, we find that graphdiyne oxide (GDYO), derived from graphdiyne (GDY), features the highest proton conductivity of 0.54 S cm−1 (100 % RH, 348 K) among the oxidized carbon allotropes reported so far. The sp‐ and sp2‐co‐hybridized carbon skeleton of GDY enables GDYO with the giant water uptake, which is 2.4 times larger than that of graphene oxide (GO), resulting in ultrahigh proton conductivity by increasing the proton concentration and proton conduction pathways. This ultrahigh proton conductivity of GDYO is further proved in a methanol fuel cell by using GDYO membrane as proton exchange membrane. The GDYO membrane enables the cell with higher open circuit voltage, larger power density and lower methanol permeability, compared with commercial Nafion 117. Moreover, the GDYO membrane bears high ion exchange capacity, good acidic stability and low swelling ratio.

Abstract:Mixed conducting materials with both ionic and electronic conductivities have gained prominence in emerging applications. However, exploring material with on‐demand ionic and electronic conductivities remains challenging, primarily due to the lack of correlating macroscopic conductivity with atom‐scale structure. Here, we explore the correlation of proton‐electron conductivity and atom‐scale structure in graphdiyne. Precisely adjusting the conjugated diynes and oxygenic functional groups in graphdiyne yields a tunable proton‐electron conductivity on the order of 103. In addition, we provide a wet‐chemistry lithography technique for uniform preparation of graphdiyne on flexible substrates. Utilizing the proton‐electron conductivity and mechanical tolerance of graphdiyne, we create bimodal flexible devices serving as capacitive switches and resistive sensors. As a proof‐of‐concept, we design a breath‐machine interface for sentence‐based communication and self‐nursing tasks with an accuracy of 98%. Our work represents an important step towards understanding the atom‐scale structure–conductivity relationship and extending the applications of mixed conducting materials to assistive technology. Stabilizing the Oxygen Vacancies and Promoting Water-Oxidation Kinetics in Cobalt Oxides by Lower Valence-State Doping

Abstract:Introducing oxygen vacancy (Vo) has been regarding as a significant and effective strategy to promote the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, it is a big challenge to stabilize Vo to reserve the excellent activity under the highly oxidizing conditions of the OER process. Herein, we propose a strategy of lower valence-state doping to stabilize the Vo by inducing formation Vo. First-principle calculations indicated that the formation energies of Vo on CoOOH is decreased apparently after lower valence-state Zn doping. The increased holes sates in the t2g orbital can facilitate bonding with oxygen intermediates to activate the inert catalytic activity of CoOOH. Importantly, short hydrogen bonds (O┉H–Oad) are formed by distorting the CoO6 octahedron after Zn-doping, thereby, the formative unique dual-center catalytic pathway can facilitating proton transfer to promote the sluggish OER. Our experimental results confirmed that Zn doped CoOOH contain more Vo, causing excellent durability and fast kinetic process for oxygen evolution including an incremental turnover frequency and a lower Tafel slope. Thus, the lower valence-state doping is promising strategy for fast-stabilized electrocatalytic water oxidation.
Elucidating the role of P on Mn‐ and N‐doped graphene catalysts in promoting oxygen reduction: Density functional theory studies

Abstract:The non‐noble Mn coordinated N, P co‐doping graphene materials were investigated theoretically in this work based on density functional theory calculation. The electronic structure is effectively tuned after the introduction of P heteroatom. The moderate d band center and density of states at Fermi energy of MnN4‐P1‐G indicate that it is of modest adsorption ability for these O‐containing intermediates. The rank of adsorption energies of O‐containing intermediates for MnN4‐P1‐G is OH* > 2OH* > OOH* > O* > O2* > H2O*, whereas the MnN4‐P1‐G favors a four‐electron process instead of two‐electron process. The doping of P on MnN4‐P1‐G can increase the kinetic activity for the rate‐determining step as well as the Ulim for MnN4‐P1‐G significantly increases from 0.38 to 0.45 V compared with MnN4‐G. The spin density and magnetic moments of Mn are effectively tuned by d, p hybridization to lower the adsorption energy of OH intermediates (rate‐determining step [RDS]) so as to improve the catalytic activity. It is concluded that the P‐doped MnN4 catalysts with excellent oxygen reduction reaction activity can be obtained and this study can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of high‐performance Mn‐based carbon materials catalysts.
Acidic Groups Functionalized Carbon Dots Capping Channels of a Proton Conductive Metal–Organic Framework by Coordination Bonds to Improve the Water-Retention Capacity and Boost Proton Conduction

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10-1 S cm-1, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.

Abstract:The role of transition-metal d and ligand p hybridization continues to be of immense interest in Li-ion battery cathode, and yet it is still poorly understood. Using combined experimental and theoretical soft X-ray absorption spectroscopic study and density functional theory calculation, we investigated the fundamental electronic structure of the high-voltage spinel LiNixMn2-xO4. An oxygen-participating charge rebalance between manganese and nickel ions was found; that is, the content of O 2p holes close to the Fermi level increases along with the increasing Ni content. Moreover, these unstable oxygen holes primarily congregate around the redox active dopants. The underlying mechanism accounting for this charge-compensated occurrence is the reverse of two bonding levels when manganese ions are oxidized from +3 to +4 states. On the basis of these new findings, we further exposed the role of oxygen in electrochemical performance. First, oxygen ions afford the charge variation together with the cations during Li insertion/deinsertion process. Second, the O 2p holes can largely screen the strong electrostatic repulsion between Mn4+ and Li+ ions to effectively enhance the rate capacity. Lastly, the excessive amount of O 2p holes is disadvantageous to the thermal stability associated with the O-2 evolution. Also, we point out that O 2p holes concentration can be modified by the metal-oxygen bonding character, and the "charge-transfer energy" is a crucial point for designing high-capacity positive electrodes for Li-ion battery.

Abstract:Oxygen-containing groups on carbon materials can induce high catalytic activity for some reactions. Herein, on the basis of a series of metal-free single-layer graphene nanodisks (GNDs) with different surface contents of oxygen-containing groups for highly efficient electrocatalytic reduction reaction of CO2 (CO2RR) to produce formate (HCOO-), we find that the CO2RR catalytic performance is only positively correlated with the surface content of carboxyl groups. While significantly, the density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the observed high CO2RR catalytic activity originates not from the solo carboxyl or other oxygen-containing groups, but from the synergistic effect between carboxyl groups and adjacent other types of groups (namely, hydroxyl, epoxide, and carbonyl) on GNDs. Inspired by such new knowledge, we further find that if the GND catalyst can "alternate work with rest", its electrocatalytic activity for CO2RR can be regenerated cyclically via a simple electro-oxidation method to regenerate the surface carboxyl groups, achieving a remarkable long-term durability for CO2RR. Such work deepens our understanding of the role of oxygen-containing groups in catalysis and provides a new strategy for the design and synthesis of high-performance metal-free carbon-based catalysts.
Mixed Conduction Properties of Pristine Bulk Graphene Oxide

Abstract:We investigated the conduction properties of pristine bulk graphene oxide (GO) with different oxidation degrees. GO with a low oxidation degree shows the electron/hole conduction behavior. Interestingly, however, GO with high oxidation degree exhibits mixed conduction behaviors (electron/hole conduction and proton conduction), depending on the water content. For GO with a high oxidation degree, electron/hole conduction dominates the electrical transport in the water-lean state, while the proton conduction dominates the electrical transport in the water-rich state. Among different oxygen-containing functional groups, the epoxide groups, which could influence the band gap, interlayer distance and water intercalation process, play a critical role in the conduction properties of GO. In electrical transport process, epoxide groups act as conduction barriers for electron/hole conduction while serving as active sites for proton conduction. Both graphite and GOs exhibit a clear anisotropic behavior in electrical transport.. These observations will provide insightful information for the applications of GO in fuel cells, humidity sensors and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs), also known as transition metal‐oxygen clusters deliver unique physical and chemical properties such as low effective surface charge density, high thermal stability, and multi-electron acceptance, making them suitable for proton conductors. In recent years, proton conductive POMs have achieved significant progress in high performance (>10 −2 S/cm) comparable to conventional materials through structural regulation strategies. At the same time, the veiled conduction mechanism has been elucidated by structural analysis and characterization. In this review, the research of POMs (Keggin-type, Dawson-type, composite materials) in proton conduction is reviewed mainly from the design strategy, proton conductivity and mechanism, structure-function relationship, and application, finally with a detailed discussion of challenges and prospects. This review will provide more inspiration for exploring and applying proton-conducting POM materials.

Abstract:To attain the objectives of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the development of stable and high-performance ion-conducting materials holds enormous relevance in various energy storage and conversion devices. Particularly, crystalline porous materials possessing built-in ordered nanochannels exhibit remarkable superiority in comprehending the ion transfer mechanisms with precision. In this regard, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly regarded as a promising alternative due to their pre-eminent structural tunability, accessible well-defined pores, and excellent thermal/chemical stability under hydrous/anhydrous conditions. By the availability of organic units and the diversity of topologies and connections, advances in COFs have been increasing rapidly over the last decade and they have emerged as a new field of proton-conducting materials. Therefore, a comprehensive summary and discussion are urgently needed to provide an "at a glance" understanding of the prospects and challenges in the development of proton-conducting COFs. In this review, we target a comprehensive review of COFs in the field of proton conductivity from the aspects of design strategies, the proton conducting mechanism/features, the relationships of structure-function, and the application of research. The relevant content of theoretical simulation, advanced structural characterizations, prospects, and challenges are also presented elaborately and critically. More importantly, we sincerely hope that this progress report will form a consistent view of this field and provide inspiration for future research.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials incorporated with oxygen functional groups (OFGs-Gr) exhibit outstanding electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production via a two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e - ORR). Currently, the nature of the active functional group and underlying reaction mechanism are still under debate. Herein, we constructed the OFGs-Gr structures and systematically investigated the effect of aqueous environment (including pH and electrode potential) on the catalyst performance in combination with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). The carboxyl group (COOH-Gr structure) demonstrates a key role in the neutral solution environment. The water molecules on COOH-Gr effectively modified the interaction of C sites with OOH. The adsorption strength of OOH increases with increasing pH, resulting in the ether group (Dopant-Gr in C-O-C structure) maintaining excellent properties in alkaline media. Furthermore, our calculations demonstrate that the selectivity of H 2 O 2 generation for Dopant-Gr is increased by an elevated electrode potential, while the selectivity for COOH-Gr is decreased. These findings provide a dynamic perspective that elucidates both the pH and electrode potential synergistically influence the catalytic property for H 2 O 2 synthesis.

Proton dynamics in water confined at the interface of the graphene-MXene heterostructure

Abstract:Heterostructures of 2D materials offer a fertile ground to study ion transport and charge storage. Here we employ ab initio molecular dynamics to examine the proton-transfer/diffusion and redox behavior in a water layer confined in the graphene-Ti3C2O2 heterostructure. We find that in comparison with the similar interface of water confined between Ti3C2O2 layers, proton redox rate in the dissimilar interface of graphene-Ti3C2O2 is much higher, owning to the very different interfacial structure as well as the interfacial electric field induced by an electron transfer in the latter. Water molecules in the dissimilar interface of the graphene-Ti3C2O2 heterostructure form a denser hydrogen-bond network with a preferred orientation of water molecules, leading to an increase of proton mobility with proton concentration in the graphene-Ti3C2O2 interface. As the proton concentration further increases, proton mobility deceases, due to increasingly more frequent surface redox events that slow down proton mobility due to binding with surface O atoms. Our work provides important insights into how the dissimilar interface and their associated interfacial structure and properties impact proton transfer and redox in the confined space.

Oxygen-Containing Functional Groups Regulating the Carbon/Electrolyte Interfacial Properties Toward Enhanced K+ Storage

Abstract:Abstract Oxygen-containing functional groups were found to effectively boost the K + storage performance of carbonaceous materials, however, the mechanism behind the performance enhancement remains unclear. Herein, we report higher rate capability and better long-term cycle performance employing oxygen-doped graphite oxide (GO) as the anode material for potassium ion batteries (PIBs), compared to the raw graphite. The in situ Raman spectroscopy elucidates the adsorption-intercalation hybrid K + storage mechanism, assigning the capacity enhancement to be mainly correlated with reversible K + adsorption/desorption at the newly introduced oxygen sites. It is unraveled that the C=O and COOH rather than C-O-C and OH groups contribute to the capacity enhancement. Based on in situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and in situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), it is found that the oxygen-containing functional groups regulate the components of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), leading to the formation of highly conductive, intact and robust SEI. Through the systematic investigations, we hereby uncover the K + storage mechanism of GO-based PIB, and establish a clear relationship between the types/contents of oxygen functional groups and the regulated composition of SEI.

Abstract:Electronic properties of graphene oxides enriched by the strong chemical bondings are investigated using first-principle calculations. They are very sensitive to the changes in the number of graphene layer, stacking configuration, and distribution of oxygen. The feature-rich electronic structures exhibit the destruction or distortion of Dirac cone, opening of band gap, anisotropic energy dispersions, O- and (C,O)-dominated energy dispersions, and extra critical points. All the few-layer graphene oxides are semi-metals except for the semiconducting monolayer ones. For the former, the distorted Dirac-cone structures and the O-dominated energy bands near the Fermi level are revealed simultaneously. The orbital-projected density of states (DOS) have many special structures mainly coming from a composite energy band, the parabolic and partially flat ones. The DOS and spatial charge distributions clearly indicate the critical bondings in O-O, C-O and C-C bonds, being responsible for the diversified properties.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are vital energy-conversion devices in a hydrogen-fueled economic. In this study, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study 4e− oxygen reduction reaction process on transition metal embedded in single and double vacancies (SV and DV) in a graphene. We calculated bonding energy and adsorption energy on CoX3 (X = B, C, N, Si, P and S) and CoX4 (X = B, C, N, Si, P and S) embedded in graphene. Our DFT results indicate that formation of CoX3 is unfeasible and the formation of CoX4 is feasible. In addition, the crucial role of ligand atoms near embedded metal atoms is revealed via the molecular orbital theory. Then the Gibbs free energy of CoX4 are calculated and the CoN4, CoS4, and CoP4 are predicted to be active for catalyzing ORR, and these also show ligand atoms’ coordination effect for catalytic activity of central metal. Furthermore, we observed that they have identical rate-determining step (RDS). This work can provide some references for transition atoms catalytic doped in carbon materials.
Conductivity and interaction mechanism of polydopamine-graphene oxide: a combined experimental and density functional theory investigation

Abstract:Composites comprising polydopamine (PDA) and graphene oxide (GO) exhibit notable electrical conductivity; however, research on the interaction between dopamine (DA) and GO remains limited. In this study, we employed a simple and environmentally friendly method to prepare and characterize this composite material, optimizing the ratio of DA to GO in the process. Our findings that when the mass ratio of DA to GO is 1:2, the composite demonstrates enhanced electrical conductivity. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were utilized to elucidate the influence of various oxygen-containing functional groups on the DA adsorption process onto GO. Parameters such as adsorption energy, charge differential density, energy gap, and energy barrier were primarily evaluated. Our results indicate that the reduction of GO by DA predominantly targets the epoxy group, leading to improved conductivity. Conversely, the presence of the epoxy group significantly undermines the adsorption between DA and GO, thereby compromising stability. In contrast, functional groups like carboxyl, hydroxyl, and carbonyl enhance the adsorption energy to varying extents. Notably, when the density of hydroxyl groups on the GO surface reaches a specific threshold, the adsorption energy experiences a significant decline. In summary, the type and quantity of oxygen-containing functional groups on GO exert a considerable influence on its interaction with DA. This research offers valuable insights for the selective preparation and application of these composites.

Abstract:Chemical doping is verified to be a promising strategy to regulate local electron distribution and further promote the poor intrinsic catalytic activity of graphdiyne. However, the current doping approach still faces problems such as precise doping for creating active sites and the destruction of graphdiyne skeleton calling for high temperature. Here, we achieved charge redistribution on graphdiyne surface through molecule functionalization. A p-type molecule–F4TCNQ (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) was introduced and the site-defined functionalization was accomplished. Theoretical calculations showed that the charge transfer ability is improved and graphdiyne becomes positively charged. The oxygen reduction electrocatalysis was conducted as a proof of principle, where the electronic states of sp hybridized C active site was tuned toward favorable reaction intermediates' adsorption. Such work from both theoretical prediction and experimental validation, found that molecule functionalization is effective to promote the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, which creates new possibilities for graphdiyne's applications in different electrochemical reactions.
