Abstract:In the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), single atom catalysts (SACs) supported on carbon materials have exhibited high activity and selectivity. However, the carbon supports are mainly graphene and carbon nanotubes, which are composed of sp(2)-hybridized carbon. Graphdiyne with sp-hybridization has been investigated as a promising carbon material for various catalytic reactions. In this study, the effect of sp-hybridization on graphdiyne was investigated using density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations for the CO2RR reactivity of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn SACs supported on graphdiyne (M-graphdiyne). Among them, Co- graphdiyne exhibits a high activity and selectivity for CH3OH product, with remarkably low free energy barrier of 0.31 eV, which is superior to SACs supported on graphene with sp(2)-hybridization. The d-band center and atomic number of the metal atom, and the charge redistribution on sp-hybridization exert significant influence to the energy of intermediates, which are key to understanding the activity and selectivity of SACs in CO2RR.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is a sustainable way of producing carbon-neutral fuels, yet the efficiency is limited by its sluggish kinetics and complex reaction pathways. Developing active, selective, and stable CO2R electrocatalysts is challenging and entails intelligent material structure design and tailoring. Here we show a graphdiyne/graphene (GDY/G) heterostructure as a 2D conductive scaffold to anchor monodispersed cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) and reduce CO2 with an appreciable activity, selectivity, and durability. Advanced characterizations, e.g., synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculation disclose that the strong electronic coupling between GDY and CoPc, together with the high surface area, abundant reactive centers, and electron conductivity provided by graphene, synergistically contribute to this distinguished electrocatalytic performance. Electrochemical measurements revealed a high FECO of 96% at a partial current density of 12 mA cm-2 in a H-cell and an FECO of 97% at 100 mA cm-2 in a liquid flow cell, along with a durability over 24 h. The per-site turnover frequency of CoPc reaches 37 s-1 at -1.0 V vs RHE, outperforming most of the reported phthalocyanine- and porphyrin-based electrocatalysts. The usage of the GDY/G heterostructure as a scaffold can be further extended to other organometallic complexes beyond CoPc. Our findings lend credence to the prospect of the GDY/G hybrid contributing to the design of single-molecule dispersed CO2R catalysts for sustainable energy conversion.
Theoretical investigation of CO2 electroreduction on N (B)-doped graphdiyne mononlayer supported single copper atom

Abstract:Carbon dioxide electrochemical reduction reaction (CO2RR) with proton-electron pair delineates an intriguing prospect for converting CO2 to useful chemicals. However, CO2RR is urgently required low-cost and high efficient electrocatalysts to overcome the sluggish reaction kinetic and ultralow selectivity. Here by means of first-principle computations, the geometric constructions, electronic structures, and CO2RR catalytic performance of boron- and nitrogen-doped graphdiyne anchoring a single Cu atom ( GDY and GDY) were systematically investigated. These eight GDY complexes possess excellent stability. The adsorption free energies showed that the eight GDY could spontaneously capture CO2 molecules. The GDY monolayers exhibit a more efficient catalytic performance for CO2 reduction compared to GDY because of the differences in adsorption energies and charge transfer. The calculations further indicated that the b-doped GDY complex possesses excellent catalytic character toward CO2RR with the same limiting potentials of −0.65 V for production of HCOOH, CO, OCH2, CH3OH, and CH4. Charge analysis indicated that the *OCHO and *COOH species gain more electrons from GDY than from GDY complexes due to different electronegativity of coordinated element. Our findings highlighted the electronegativity of coordinated elements for the design of atomic metal catalysts.

Abstract:CO2 reduction (CO2RR) and hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) are widely used in advanced energy conversion systems, which are urgently required low-cost and high efficient electrocatalysts to overcome the sluggish reaction kinetic and ultralow selectivity. Here, the single-, double-, and triple-atomic Cu embedded graphdiyne (Cu1-3@GDY) complexes have been systematically modeled by first-principles computations to evaluate the corresponding electric structures and catalytic performance. The results revealed that these Cu1-3@GDY monolayers possess high thermal stability by forming the firm Cu–C bonds. The Cu1-3@GDY complexes exhibit good electrical conductivity, which could promote the charge transfer in the electroreduction process. The electronic and magnetic interactions between key species (∗H, ∗COOH, and ∗OCHO) and Cu1-3@GDY complexes are responsible for the different catalytic performance of HER and CO2RR on different Cu1-3@GDY sheets. The Cu2@GDY complex could efficiently convert CO2 to CH4 with a rather low limiting potential of −0.42 V due to the spin magnetism of catalysts. The Cu1@GDY and Cu3@GDY exhibit excellent HER catalytic performance, and their limiting potentials are −0.18 and −0.02 V, respectively. Our findings not only provide a valuable avenue for the design of atomic metal catalysts toward various catalytic reactions but also highlight an important role of spin magnetism in electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Chemical doping is verified to be a promising strategy to regulate local electron distribution and further promote the poor intrinsic catalytic activity of graphdiyne. However, the current doping approach still faces problems such as precise doping for creating active sites and the destruction of graphdiyne skeleton calling for high temperature. Here, we achieved charge redistribution on graphdiyne surface through molecule functionalization. A p-type molecule–F4TCNQ (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) was introduced and the site-defined functionalization was accomplished. Theoretical calculations showed that the charge transfer ability is improved and graphdiyne becomes positively charged. The oxygen reduction electrocatalysis was conducted as a proof of principle, where the electronic states of sp hybridized C active site was tuned toward favorable reaction intermediates' adsorption. Such work from both theoretical prediction and experimental validation, found that molecule functionalization is effective to promote the electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, which creates new possibilities for graphdiyne's applications in different electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:Graphdiyne (GDY) has achieved great success in the application of two-dimensional carbon materials in recent years due to its excellent electrochemical catalytic capacity. Considering the unique electronic structure of GDY, transition metal (TM 1 ) (TM = Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir) single-atom catalysts (SACs) with isolated loading on GDY were designed for electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) with density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. The charge density difference and projected densities of states have been systematically calculated. The mechanism of electrochemical catalysis and the reaction pathway of CO 2 RR over Os 1 /GDY catalysts have also been investigated and high catalytic activity was found for the generation of methane. The calculated results provide a theoretical basis for the design of efficient GDY-based SACs for electrochemical CO 2 RR.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 is one of the most attractive approaches for converting CO2 into valuable chemical feedstocks and fuels. This work reports a catalyst comprising graphdiyne-decorated bismuth subcarbonate (denoted as ) for efficient electroreduction of CO2 to formate. The shows a stable current density of 200 mA cm–2 at –1.1 V in a flow cell configuration, with a faradaic efficiency of 93.5% for formate. Experimental results show that the synergistic effect in is beneficial for the CO2 adsorption affinity, the reaction kinetics and the selectivity for formate. In addition, in-situ X-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the electron-rich GDY could facilitate the reduction from Bi(III) to Bi(0), thus leading to more active sites. We also demonstrate that the promoting effect of GDY in CO2 electroreduction can be further extended to other metal catalysts. To the best of our knowledge, such general promoting functions of GDY for CO2 electroreduction have not been documented thus far.

Constant Electrode Potential Quantum Mechanical Study of CO2 Electrochemical Reduction Catalyzed by N-Doped Graphene

Abstract:In this study, quantum mechanics combined with a constant electrode potential model were employed to study CO2 electrochemical reduction (CO2ER) on N-doped graphenes under U = -1.0 V-SHE. Our goal was to investigate whether metal-free N-doped graphene itself can reduce CO2 and identify the reaction centers. We considered both the thermodynamics and kinetics of the process. Among the 26 reaction sites that were screened, only 2 of these sites could reduce CO2 to CO(g) with a kinetic barrier (Delta G double dagger(sic)) of similar to 0.55 eV for the rate-determining step and downhill thermodynamics for each elementary step. Both sites are composed of carbon atoms on the edge of graphene and adjacent to graphitic nitrogen atoms. Two other motifs (composed of either pyridinic or pyrrolic N) were also able to reduce CO2 to surface-bound CO with Delta G(sic) values less than 0.70 eV. However, despite favorable thermodynamics, the reduction of the bound CO to CHO suffered from larger Delta G(sic) values (>0.97 eV), rendering the reaction inaccessible. Therefore, N-doped graphene is able to reduce CO2 to CO(g) or surface-bound CO. However, further reactions beyond two-proton-two-electron reduction are unlikely. In addition, the evaluation of the performance of a site for the CO2 ER must consider both the thermodynamics and kinetics of the process.
Intrinsic Defect-Rich Graphene Coupled Cobalt Phthalocyanine for Robust Electrochemical Reduction of Carbon Dioxide

Abstract:Carbon-based matrix is known to exert a profound influence on the stability and activity of a supported molecular catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2RR), while regulating the interfacial π–π interaction by designing functional species on the carbon matrix has seldom been explored. Herein, promoted π electron transfer between a graphene substrate and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) is achieved by introducing abundant intrinsic defects into graphene (DrGO), which not only generates more electrochemically active Co sites and leads to a positive shift of the Co2+/Co+ reduction potential but also enhances the CO2 chemical adsorption. Consequently, as compared to the defect-free counterpart rGO-CoPc, DrGO-CoPc could yield CO with a Faradaic efficiency (FECO) higher than 85% in a wide potential range from −0.53 to −0.88 V, and the largest FECO and partial CO current density (JCO) achieve 90.2% and 73.9 mA cm–2, respectively. More importantly, both FECO and JCO can be dramatically improved when conducting eCO2RR in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte, for which FECO is higher than 90.0% in a wide potential range of 600 mV, with the peak JCO of up to 113.6 mA cm–2 in an H-type cell. Abstract:Graphene-based materials are being hotly pursued for energy and environment applications. Inspired by the recent experimental synthesis of Fe-2 dimer supported on graphene (He, Z.; He, K.; Robertson, A. W.; Kirkland, A. I.; Kim, D.; Ihm, J.; Yoon, E.; Lee, G.-D.; Warner, J. H. Nano Lett. 2014, 14, 3766-3772), here using large-scale screening-based density functional theory and microkinetics modeling, we have identified that some transition metal dimers (Cu-2, CuMn, and CuNi), when supported on graphene with adjacent single vacancies (labeled as XY@2SV), perform better in CO2 electroreduction with reduced overpotental and enhanced current density. Specifically, Cu-2@2SV is catalytically active toward CO2 production, similar to Au electrodes but distinct from bulk Cu; MnCu@2SV is selective toward CH4 generation, while NiCu@2SV promotes CH3OH production because of the difference in oxophilicity between incorporated Mn and Ni. The advantages of the outstanding selectivity of products, the high dispersity of spatial distribution, and the reduced overpotentials allow these new systems to be promising catalysts, which will motivate more experimental research in this direction to further explore graphene-based materials for CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Anchoring transition metal (TM) atoms on suitable substrates to form single‐atom catalysts (SACs) is a novel approach to constructing electrocatalysts. Graphdiyne with sp‐sp2 hybridized carbon atoms and uniformly distributed pores have been considered as a potential carbon material for supporting metal atoms in a variety of catalytic processes. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the single TM atom anchoring on graphdiyne (TM1‐GDY, TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co and Cu) as the catalysts for CO2 reduction. After anchoring metal atoms on GDY, the catalytic activity of TM1‐GDY (TM = Mn, Co and Cu) for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) are significantly improved comparing with the pristine GDY. Among the studied TM1‐GDY, Cu1‐GDY shows excellent electrocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction which the product is HCOOH and the limiting potential (UL) is only ‐0.16 V. Mn1‐GDY and Co1‐GDY exhibit superior catalytic selectivity for CO2 reduction to CH4 with UL of ‐0.62 and ‐0.34 V, respectively. The hydrogen evolution reaction by TM1‐GDY (TM = Mn, Co and Cu) occurs on carbon atoms, while the active sites of CO2RR are transition metals. The present work is expected to provide a solid theoretical basis for CO2 conversion into valuable hydrocarbons.

A Graphene-Supported Single-Atom FeN 5 Catalytic Site for Efficient Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valued products is one of the most important issues but remains a great challenge in chemistry. Herein, we report a novel synthetic approach involving prolonged thermal pyrolysis of hemin and melamine molecules on graphene for the fabrication of a robust and efficient single-iron-atom electrocatalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction. The single-atom catalyst exhibits high Faradaic efficiency (ca. 97.0 %) for CO production at a low overpotential of 0.35 V, outperforming all Fe-N-C-based catalysts. The remarkable performance for CO2-to-CO conversion can be attributed to the presence of highly efficient singly dispersed FeN5 active sites supported on N-doped graphene with an additional axial ligand coordinated to FeN4. DFT calculations revealed that the axial pyrrolic nitrogen ligand of the FeN5 site further depletes the electron density of Fe 3d orbitals and thus reduces the Fe-CO pi back-donation, thus enabling the rapid desorption of CO and high selectivity for CO production.
Exploring Spin Dynamics in Diatomic Co2 Catalysts on Graphyne for Enhanced Co Electroreduction

Abstract:The obtained Co2‐GY demonstrates the synergetic effect of the applied potential and acidity on spin dynamic and catalytic performance for C2/C1 products of CO electroreduction. Under acidic conditions, Co2‐GY exhibits high CH3OH selectivity (≈99%) and an activity of 0.27 eV, while under basic conditions, it achieves a CH3CH2OH selectivity of over 99% and an activity of 0.50 eV. Investigating spin dynamics in electrocatalysis is crucial for the rational design of magnetically heterogeneous catalysts. Utilizing spin‐polarized density functional theory calculation, herein, the spin dynamic of diatomic Co2‐supported γ‐graphyne (Co2‐GY) catalysts during the process of CO electroreduction (eCORR) is identified, focusing on the effect of the applied potential and acidity on spin dynamic and catalytic performance. In particular, the obtained Co2‐GY shows a new efficient C2 pathway of CH2* + CHO* coupling mechanism, resulting in the optimal CH3CH2OH product with ∆G of 0.50 eV and the selectivity of 99.99% under alkaline conditions. Under acidic media, Co2‐GY exhibits the optimal C1 product (CH3OH) with ∆G of 0.27 eV and a selectivity of 99.99%. During CO electroreduction, the reaction environment (pH and applied potential) influences spin dynamics in catalyst‐reactant systems, affecting the spin transition of diatomic Co2 active sites among four magnetic states: ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and diamagnetic. These findings will be helpful for the rational design of transition‐metal heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:As a burgeoning carbon material, graphdiyne (GDY) with a highly π‐conjugated structure that is composed of sp‐ and sp2‐hybridized carbon atoms, it can be grouped into several forms. Compared to traditional carbon materials, GDY exhibits a unique carbon network and electronic structure, raising the concern of researchers at home and abroad. As a result of its favorable electronic structure and good functionalization capability, GDY can be modified to provide an ideal platform to prepare a highly active catalyst for electrocatalytic reactions. Furthermore, GDY can be synthesized on arbitrary substrates in a three‐dimensional nanosheet array structure, which can provide a large number of channels for the transfer of electrons and a large contact area with the reactant, which is also beneficial for electrocatalytic reactions. This Review focuses on the recent development of GDY for electrocatalysis applications, and elaborates the future prospects of GDY.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO conversion is a promising way for sustainable chemical fuel production, yet the conversion efficiency is strongly limited by the sluggish kinetics and complex reaction pathways. Here we report the ultrathin conjugated metalloporphyrin covalent organic framework epitaxially grown on graphene as a two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure to catalyze CO reduction. X-ray absorption and density functional theory calculations reveal the strong interlayer coupling leads to electron-deficient metal centers and speeds up electrocatalysis. The Co(III)-N centers exhibit a CO Faradaic efficiency of 97% at a partial current density of 8.2 mA cm in an H-cell, along with a stable running over 30 h. The selectivity of CO approached 99% with a partial current density of 191 mA cm in a liquid flow cell, and the turnover frequency achieved 50 400 h at -1.15 V vs RHE, outperforming most reported organometallic frameworks. This work highlights the key role of strong electronic coupling between van der Waals layers for accelerating the dynamics of CO conversion.

Abstract:Metal-free catalysts for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a research hotspot to enhance CO2 utilization as a way to counteract global warming. Nitrogen-doped graphene attracts attention because of the abundance of nitrogen and promising catalytic performance of graphene. In this work, we investigated various N-doped configurations and their corresponding catalytic abilities for CO2RR to ethanol via spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) computations. The final results indicate that site 43 of binary-N-doped graphene had high CO2RR activity, stable adsorption of reactants, and good activation of CO2. The catalysis process demonstrated features of low free energy barriers in the rising stage and obvious facilitation of the potential-limiting step. Compared with a catalyst-free process, it can effectively improve the reaction activity. The results provide theoretical guidance for the design and preparation of high-performance CO2RR catalysts.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are vital energy-conversion devices in a hydrogen-fueled economic. In this study, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study 4e− oxygen reduction reaction process on transition metal embedded in single and double vacancies (SV and DV) in a graphene. We calculated bonding energy and adsorption energy on CoX3 (X = B, C, N, Si, P and S) and CoX4 (X = B, C, N, Si, P and S) embedded in graphene. Our DFT results indicate that formation of CoX3 is unfeasible and the formation of CoX4 is feasible. In addition, the crucial role of ligand atoms near embedded metal atoms is revealed via the molecular orbital theory. Then the Gibbs free energy of CoX4 are calculated and the CoN4, CoS4, and CoP4 are predicted to be active for catalyzing ORR, and these also show ligand atoms’ coordination effect for catalytic activity of central metal. Furthermore, we observed that they have identical rate-determining step (RDS). This work can provide some references for transition atoms catalytic doped in carbon materials.
Tuning CO2 Electroreduction of Cu Atoms on Triphenylene-Cored Graphdiyne

Abstract:Cu catalysts are well known for their good performance in CO2 conversion and Cu atomic catalysts-supported porous two-dimensional (2D) materials are of special interest for CO2 electroreduction. In this work, we have explored the catalytic properties of Cu atomic catalysts supported on the newly synthesized triphenylene–graphdiyne [ ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces 2019, 11, 2730] using DFT calculations. We have found that triphenylene–graphdiyne can fix the Cu atoms in triangular pores with diacetylenic linkages through π → d interactions. The single Cu atomic catalyst is catalytically active toward CO production through carboxyl mechanism with an overpotential of 0.26 V, which can be tuned to 0.16 and 0.08 V when functionalized with O and NH, respectively, through shifting the d-band center and adjusting the adsorption energies, leading to an enhanced energy efficiency.
