Abstract:AbstractGlobal warming and increased living standards have rapidly increased the demand for cooling systems. Meeting this demand in less economically developed areas is highly challenging due to a lack of electricity. In this paper, we have demonstrated a high‐performance and wide relative humidity (RH) solar‐driven evaporative cooling strategy that uses only atmospheric water. Developed here for the first time, we designed a metal–organic framework (MOF‐801) based composite with a high‐performance atmospheric water absorption across a wide range of RH. The as‐synthesized composite can adsorb atmospheric water up to ~22% (~80%) of its weight at an RH@28% (~70%). Our demonstration has shown that the corresponding cooling powers range from 136 to 344 W/m2 in a wide range of RH and solar intensities, and the passive cooling temperature is up to 14°C lower than the device's reference counterpart. Our study thus proposes a solar‐driven cooling coating with high cooling powers across a wide range of RH based on an as‐synthesized composite, which pinpoints a pathway to replace traditional compression‐based cooling systems (e.g., air conditioners) and which will also have a significant impact in future global energy consumption.
Internally-cooled atmospheric water harvesting enabling improved productivity

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting holds promise for alleviating water scarcity, but current prototypes have not shown significant increases in practical yields despite efforts in the enlarged engineering scale. This is due to weakened heat and mass transfer with a packed sorbent bed. In this work, the desiccant-coated adsorbers were employed to fabricate the water harvesting device that incorporates internal fluid for cooling and heating during sorption and desorption. Featured with an internal cooling effect, practical water productivity could be improved by 1.75-9.96 times with a low desorption temperature (45-62 °C). The continuous water harvesting system could produce 0.77-3.98 Lwater/kgsorbent/day with a thermal energy consumption of 7.7-30.4 MJ/kg in wide climates from 20 % to 80 % RH, providing a reference for device design in the engineering view. The demonstration revealed that using natural cooling in the sorption stage has great benefits in improving water harvesting performance, which can be integrated into the building sectors or a wider range of scenarios.
Ultra-high-yield Solar-Driven Modular Atmospheric Water Harvester with Improved Heat Management

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is promising for addressing water scarcity due to its wide global applicability. However, given their weak heat and mass transfer properties, most existing SAWH systems remain uncompetitive in fresh water production in most practical scenarios. Here, we present a modular water harvester (MWH) with a serial modular design to achieve advanced heat and mass management. The device can perform sorption kinetics without any power equipment, reduce heat radiation to semidecouple the desorption and condensation process, and induce thermal buoyancy to enhance water vapor transport via the chimney effect. The MWH reports 3.78 kg m-2- 2 day- 1 and 1.66 kg kg- 1sorbent day- 1 of water productivity outdoors, which is the highest yield among reported passive SAWH devices.

Abstract:Solar-driven, sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) offers a cost-effective solution to freshwater scarcity in arid areas. Creating AWH devices capable of performing multiple adsorption–desorption cycles per day is crucial for increasing water production rates matching human water requirements. However, achieving rapid-cycling AWH in passive harvesters has been challenging due to sorbents' slow water adsorption–desorption dynamics. Here we report an MOF-derived nanoporous carbon, a sorbent endowed with fast sorption kinetics and excellent photothermal properties, for high-yield AWH. The optimized structure (40% adsorption sites and ~1.0 nm pore size) has superior sorption kinetics due to the minimized diffusion resistance. Moreover, the carbonaceous sorbent exhibits fast desorption kinetics enabled by efficient solar-thermal heating and high thermal conductivity. A rapid-cycling water harvester based on nanoporous carbon derived from metal–organic frameworks can produce 0.18 L kg carbon −1 h −1 of water at 30% relative humidity under one-sun illumination. The proposed design strategy is helpful to develop high-yield, solar-driven AWH for advanced freshwater-generation systems.

Abstract:The advancement of additional methods for freshwater generation is imperative to effectively address the global water shortage crisis. In this regard, extraction of the ubiquitous atmospheric moisture is a powerful strategy allowing for decentralized access to potable water. The energy requirements as well as the temporal and spatial restrictions of this approach can be substantially reduced if an appropriate sorbent is integrated in the atmospheric water generator. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been successfully employed as sorbents to harvest water from air, making atmospheric water generation viable even in desert environments. Herein, the latest progress in the development of MOFs capable of extracting water from air and the design of atmospheric water harvesters deploying such MOFs are reviewed. Furthermore, future directions for this emerging field, encompassing both material and device improvements, are outlined.

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is a promising way to address global water shortage. However, there still lacks further study to demonstrate the potential of simultaneous water production and humidity regulation broadening its applications. Here, a metal–organic framework-based humidity pump was proposed to realize both the two functions in a wide humidity range. Double sorption bed with Ni 2 Cl 2 (BTDD) coating was integrated to switch alternately between adsorption (dehumidification) and desorption (water production) states throughout the day. The device produced 2510 mL water ·kg −1 MOF ·day −1 indoors superior to the existing researches. Even at arid condition (35 % RH), it still exhibited high yield of 1780 mL water ·kg −1 MOF ·day −1 benefiting from enhanced heat and mass transfer. Besides, the device effectively dehumidified a space with 20.5-time volume below 60 % RH under variable high-humidity environments (75 %-90 % RH). This device is a feasible way to water scarcity and a functional product for multi-scenario utilization, promoting SAWH a further step to practical applications.

Abstract:Efficient freshwater production techniques are urgently required to address the global water-scarcity problem. The solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology, which can capture water vapour from ambient air and release it under sunlight, is a sustainable and feasible strategy for obtaining fresh water. The key to achieving high water harvesting lays in the dynamic adsorption properties of the material and the heat and mass transfer characteristics of the device structure. Therefore, this paper reports a core-shell structured material, UiO-66@MIL-101(Cr) (U@M), where the outer layer exhibits excellent water-adsorption characteristics under arid conditions, and the inner layer exhibits high water-adsorption characteristics under high humidity conditions. These inner and outer layer materials are assembled into a core-shell structure while considering the water-harvesting features of both sides, achieving synergistic enhancement of the AWH performance at low relative humidity (RH). Experimental results demonstrate that at 25°C and 30 % RH, the novel core-shell structured material achieves a high water-harvesting capacity of 0.408 g g −1 and excellent stability in 50 operating cycle tests. At the system level, we have developed a solar-driven AWH device based on the synthesised core-shell material. Daytime and night-time experimental tests were conducted in outdoor environments, resulting in a water production rate exceeding 1.336 kg m − 2 day − 1, with the collected water meeting the standards for laboratory-grade pure water. The research findings can be applied to alleviate water issues in arid regions, such as residential water supply, industrial electrolysis for hydrogen production and other fields, showing broad application prospects.

Abstract:Solar-powered atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been recognized as an attractive way to alleviate water shortage stress in rural arid areas given the naturally abundant solar energy. However, the existing solar-powered AWH technologies only allow a singular water production mode: either solar heating-driven AWH which usually results in rather poor water productivity due to the limited availability of sufficient sunlight or conductive heating-driven all-day AWH with significantly improved water productivity but requiring additional electricity provided with a photovoltaic module. This greatly limits the flexibility in managing AWH based on climate conditions, water productivity, and energy cost. Herein, a sandwich-structured MOF monolith (denoted as CACS) with dual heating capacity, localized solar heating (LSH) and electrical heating (LEH), is presented. Compared with LSH, the use of LEH leads to more rapid and uniform heating of CACS monoliths, thereby driving a significantly enhanced water desorption efficiency with faster kinetics. Using the CACS monolith as an AWH sorbent, a new type of atmospheric water harvester is developed and able to produce water in multiple working modes: LSH-, LEH-, and LSH-/LEH-driven AWH, thereby enabling flexible AWH on demand: direct use of sunlight for LSH-driven AWH during the sunlight-sufficient day and/or LEH-driven all-day AWH powered by a photovoltaic module particularly during the sunlight-absent/-insufficient time (night or cloudy day). When working at the LSH-/LEH-driven AWH mode, the resulting prototype delivers 1.4 LH2O kgMOF-1 day-1 of water productivity with 2.3 kW·h L-1H2O of energy consumption, corresponding to 5.4 times higher water productivity than the LSH-driven AWH working mode alone and 17.9% of energy saving at the cost of 22.2% of water productivity reduction compared with the LEH-driven AWH working mode alone. The current work, therefore, demonstrates a novel solar-powered AWH strategy that enables all-day water production with flexible choices on AWH working modes in terms of climate conditions, desired water productivity, and energy cost.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) are promising for solving the global water crisis, but there are two major challenges: scaled-up production and high-performance modular device design. Herein, we propose a comprehensive solution encompassing large-scale synthesis coupled with an ultra-dense modular solar-driven device without auxiliary equipment. In our study, 0.1 kg Ni2Cl2(BTDD) 2 Cl 2 (BTDD) per batch was achieved by reflux synthesis, with a yield of 84% and a space-time yield of 630 kg MOF m-3- 3 month- 1 . Benefiting from this, we realized the application of this efficient physisorbent at device level. We analyzed the AWH process to obtain thermal requirements on two scales: the entire device and each component. After the optimization on both scales, the proposed device with an integrated modular design showed ultra-high water harvesting per unit volume of 23 L m-3- 3 and water yield up to 840.5 g m-2- 2 under 1 sun in 7 h.

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) is recognized as a promising strategy for extracting atmospheric moisture to pro-vide arid regions with potable water. As appropriate sorbents are crucial for efficient SAWH, many novel sorbents have been devel-oped in recent years. However, the lack of benchmarks prevents the accurate evaluation of sorbents' performance for system -ori-ented and location-/climate-specific selection. Herein, reliable models are established to analyze the global SAWH potential of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in terms of practical water yields and energy requirements for passive and active SAWH, respectively. Moreover, geospatial guidance of the efficient MOF-assisted AWH deployment is provided based on a thermodynamic framework in combination with high-resolution global weather data throughout a year with seasonal climate variation. Overall, this study establishes benchmarks for location-and climate-specific adsorbents that will expand the application of sorbent-assisted water-harvesting tech-nologies in effective off-grid water-supply systems in water-scarce regions.
Enhanced continuous atmospheric water harvesting with scalable hygroscopic gel driven by natural sunlight and wind

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) has received unprecedented attention as a future water and energy platform. However, the water productivity of SAWH systems is still constrained by the slow sorption kinetics at material and component levels and inefficient condensation. Here, we report a facile method to prepare hygroscopic interconnected porous gel (HIPG) with fast sorption-desorption kinetics, high scalability and stability, and strong adhesion property for highly efficient SAWH. We further design a solar-wind coupling driven SAWH device with collaborative heat and mass enhancement achieving continuous water production. Concentrated sunlight contributes to enhancing the desorption and condensation synergistically, and natural wind is introduced to drive the device operation and improve the sorption kinetics. The device demonstrated record high working performance of 14.9 Lwater m-2 day-1 and thermal efficiency of 25.7% in indoor experiments and 3.5-8.9 Lwater m-2 day-1 in outdoor experiments by solar concentration without any other energy consumption. This work provides an up-and-coming pathway to realize highly efficient and sustainable clean water supply for off-grid and arid regions.

Abstract:This study unveils a Ni─Ni3S2 mesh/BMOF hybrid sorbent, leveraging a photothermal bridge to significantly improve MOF desorption kinetics, enabling rapid and efficient atmospheric water harvesting. Exhibiting high water uptake and robust cyclic stability, it highlights the potential of integrating photothermal materials with MOFs to tackle water scarcity challenges, particularly in areas with high relative humidity. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as leading candidates for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). Despite their high water uptake capacity, challenges persist in effective solar‐driven desorption for water collection. Addressing this, a photothermal bridge is introduced by in situ growth of Ni3S2 coating on a thermally conductive nickel mesh, enhancing heat transfer to the MOF and accelerating desorption kinetics. MIL‐101 (Cr) MOF in bulk form (BMOF) is bonded to the lightweight Ni─Ni3S2 mesh using adhesive, forming a dual‐layer Ni─Ni3S2 mesh/BMOF assembly. This hybrid retains a high water uptake of ≈0.63 g g−1 at 60% relative humidity (RH) with superior sorption kinetics. Photothermally driven heat transfer from Ni─Ni3S2 to BMOF achieves complete water desorption within 40 min under 1 kW m−2. Compared to other configurations like foil, granules, and foam, the mesh‐based hybrid has the highest single‐cycle adsorption–desorption kinetic of 3.18 × 10−3 g g−1 min−1. Additionally, the hybrid demonstrates exceptional hydrothermal stability over 50 cycles and maintains morphological stability with airflow, ensuring consistent performance. Heat transfer simulations confirm the thermal distribution across the Ni─Ni3S2 mesh/BMOF, corroborating the rapid and uniform desorption. This approach paves the way for efficient AWH in high‐RH, water‐scarce regions by enhancing desorption kinetics through solar energy.

Abstract:Harvesting atmospheric water and converting it into electricity play vital roles in advancing next-generation energy conversion systems. However, the current water harvester systems suffer from a weak water capture ability and poor recyclability due to high diffusion barriers and low sorption kinetics, which significantly limit their practical application. Herein, we drew inspiration from the natural "Pump effect" observed in wood and successfully developed a dual "absorption-adsorption" networked MXene aerogel atmospheric water harvester (MAWH) through ice templating and confining LiCl processes, thereby serving multiple purposes of clean water production, passive dehumidification, and power generation. The MAWH benefits from the dual H-bond network of MXene and cellulose nanocrystals (absorption network) and the hygroscopic properties of lithium chloride (adsorption network). Furthermore, its aligned wood-like channel structure efficiently eliminates water nucleation near the 3D network, resulting in fast moisture absorption. The developed MAWH demonstrates a high moisture absorption ability of 3.12 g g-1 at 90% relative humidity (RH), featuring rapid vapor transport rates and durable cyclic performance. When compared with commercial desiccants such as the 4A molecular sieve and silica gel, the MAWH can reduce the RH from 80% to 20% within just 6 h. Most notably, our integrated MAWH-based water harvesting-power generation system achieves a high voltage of ∼0.12 V at 77% RH, showcasing its potential for practical application. These developed MAWHs are considered as high-performance atmospheric water harvesters in the water collection and power generation field.
Enabling Continuous and Improved Solar-Driven Atmospheric Water Harvesting with Ti3C2-Incorporated Metal-Organic Framework Monoliths

Abstract:Solar-powered atmospheric water harvest (SAWH) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents one of the most sustainable, energy-efficient, and low-cost ways to alleviate water shortage stress in arid regions. However, the daily water productivity of previously developed SAWH devices remains low as they are merely allowed to be operated in batch mode and complete one water harvest cycle every day. This inevitably makes it rather challenging to deploy MOF-based SAWH for water production at scales. To overcome this challenge, MXene Ti3C2-incorporated UiO-66-NH2 (TUN) cylindrical monoliths (13 mm diameter, 4 mm thickness) with vertically aligned porous networks have been prepared and exhibited greatly enhanced solar heating capacity and atmospheric water adsorption/desorption kinetics. Using TUN monoliths as atmospheric water adsorbents, a novel SAWH device containing a flippable adsorbent stage with dual TUN monolith layers attached on both sides has been fabricated. Such a novel design enables the prototype to produce water in a continuous mode under sunlight irradiation, delivering 57.8 mLH2O kgMOF-1 h-1 of water productivity in a simulated indoor arid environment (20% relative humidity, 298 K). This is the first exploration in continuous water production with MOF-based SAWH, demonstrating a promising way to achieve scalable and low-cost SAWH in arid areas.

Abstract:Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (SAWH) as an appealing way to address global water shortage can obtain water from air anytime and anywhere. However, achieving liter-scale water yield by portable device for daily demand is still a challenge. Here, a 7.5-L portable atmospheric water harvester with optimized structure design was proposed. By adopting central heating and radiation heat shielding strategy to minimize heat losses during desorption process and utilizing a batch-process operation model, the device presented superior productivity of 1150 gwater/day with low energy consumption of 1.7 kWh/L under field test. This is the first demonstration to promote daily water yield of small-size SAWH device to an order of 1000 g with lower energy consumption compared with existing active SAWH studies. Optimized heat and mass transfer within compact structure enabled the water yield per unit volume and weight of the device reaching milestone values of 152.5 gwater/Ldevice/day and 199.4 gwater/kgdevice/day. This remarkable performance motivated the feasibility of distributed freshwater production and pushed SAWH technology one step closer to the practical applications.

Abstract:Conversion of atmospheric water to sustainable and clean freshwater resources through MOF-based adsorbent has great potential for the renewable environmental industry. However, its daily water production is hampered by susceptibility to agglomeration, slow water evaporation efficiency, and limited water-harvesting capacity. Herein, a solar-assisted bimetallic MOF (BMOF)-derived fiber component that surmounts these limitations and exhibits both optimized water-collect capacity and short adsorption-desorption period is proposed. The proposed strategy involves utilizing bottom-up interface-induced assembly between carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube and hygroscopic BMOF on a multi-ply glass fiber support. The designed BMOF (MIL-100(Fe,Al)-3) skeleton constructed using bimetallic-node defect engineering exhibits a high specific surface area (1,535.28 m2/g) and pore volume (0.76 cm3/g), thereby surpassing the parent MOFs and other reported MOFs in capturing moisture. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure of fiber rods and the solar-driven self-heating interface of photothermal layer, the customized BMOF crystals realize efficient loading and optimized water adsorption-desorption kinetics. As a result, the resultant fiber components achieve six adsorption-desorption cycles per day and an impressive water collection of 1.45 g/g/day under medium-high humidity outdoor conditions. Therefore, this work will provide new ideas for optimizing the daily yield of atmospheric water harvesting techniques.

Abstract:Nowadays, two-thirds of the global population are grappling with water scarcity. Sorption-based water harvesting (SAWH), which does not depend on conventional water sources and provides decentralized clean water, is steadily gaining popularity. However, the contradiction between the low daily water production in arid climates and the high energy consumption of large-scale devices has become a pivotal limitation for efficient water harvesting. Here, we report a multicyclic SAWH device with heat recovery equipped with 3 sorbent beds that alternatively desorb in automatic switching mode to achieve all-day continuous water harvesting. Furthermore, based on the rapid sorption and desorption kinetics of the adsorbent in the initial stages, employing a rapidcycling operation strategy contributes to realize an outstanding water productivity of 8.07 kg day(-1) and 0.21 kg kgsorbent(-1) day(-1) under practical arid conditions (15( degrees)C/25 % RH). Besides, the apparatus equipped with heat regenerator showed a significant decrease in energy consumption from 12.17 kWh to 10.65 kWh during a desorption cycle (4 h). Moreover, a hybrid desorption mode driven by a combination of solar collector and electric heater is demonstrated in an island. This SAWH system is anticipated to provide a promising approach for large-scale efficient water harvesting in all-day arid regions (RH<35 %).
