Abstract:Density functional theory investigations on CO2 hydrogenation to methanol mechanisms over Cu13 cluster loaded catalyst were performed. The results indicate that introducing TiO2 into Al2O3 promoted the residual electrons from Al2O3 surface directionally transmitted to the interface formed by the loaded Cu13 cluster and the support surface, thus created the electron-rich active interface. Incorporating single atom Ga promoter further gathered the residual electrons and stabilized the loaded Cu13 clusters. The electron-rich property of the active interface promoted the chemical adsorption and activation of both CO2 and the generated carbonyl species. Further favors the hydrogenating of carbonyl intermediates to methanol and effectively enhances the methanol selectivity. Moreover, CO2 priors to hydrogenated to methanol via reverse water gas shift pathway over Cu13/Ga-AT computational model with changed reaction rate controlling step with reduced activation energy. This work offers a simple approach for efficient copper-based methanol synthesis catalysts through control of interface electron structure.
Effects of Pore Structure on Methanol Selectivity in Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method using different binders under various pressures, and the micro-structure and catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts were studied by TEM and BET. The results show that the internal diffusion resistance increases with the increase of pelleting force, which causes the decrease of CO conversion and the increase of methanol selectivity. The reaction mechanism study and the comparison of the mean free path of CO and H2 under reaction condition show that the change of pore structure has different diffusion effects on each gas. Therefore, the reaction route was varied when the H2 concentration near active sites decreases, and the change of the reaction rate is also affected, which leads to the change of methanol selectivity. Experiments using binders with different molecular weights verified this mechanism.
Density Functional Theory Study of CO2 Hydrogenation on Transition-Metal-Doped Cu(211) Surfaces

Abstract:The massive emission of CO2 has caused a series of environmental problems, including global warming, which exacerbates natural disasters and human health. Cu-based catalysts have shown great activity in the reduction of CO2, but the mechanism of CO2 activation remains ambiguous. In this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the hydrogenation of CO2 on Cu(211)-Rh, Cu(211)-Ni, Cu(211)-Co, and Cu(211)-Ru surfaces. The doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru was found to enhance CO2 hydrogenation to produce COOH. For CO2 hydrogenation to produce HCOO, Ru plays a positive role in promoting CO dissociation, while Rh, Ni, and Co increase the barriers. These results indicate that Ru is the most effective additive for CO2 reduction in Cu-based catalysts. In addition, the doping of Rh, Ni, Co, and Ru alters the electronic properties of Cu, and the activity of Cu-based catalysts was subsequently affected according to differential charge analysis. The analysis of Bader charge shows good predictions for CO2 reduction over Cu-based catalysts. This study provides some fundamental aids for the rational design of efficient and stable CO2-reducing agents to mitigate CO2 emission.

Abstract:The metal supported catalysts are emerging catalysts that are receiving a lot of attention in CO2 hydrogenation to C1 products. Numerous experiments have demonstrated that the support (usually an oxide) is crucial for the catalytic performance. The support metal oxides are used to aid in the homogeneous dispersion of metal particles, prevent agglomeration, and control morphology owing to the metal support interaction (MSI). MSI can efficiently optimize the structural and electronic properties of catalysts and tune the conversion of key reaction intermediates involved in CO2 hydrogenation, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance. There is an increasing attention is being paid to the promotion effects in the catalytic CO2 hydrogenation process. However, a systematically understanding about the effects of MSI on CO2 hydrogenation to C1 products catalytic performance has not been fully studied yet due to the diversities in catalysts and reaction conditions. Hence, the characteristics and modes of MSI in CO2 hydrogenation to C1 products are elaborated in detail in our work.

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 into chemicals is a promising strategy for CO2 utilization, but its intricate transformation pathways and insufficient product selectivity still pose challenges. Exploiting new catalysts for tuning product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation is important to improve the viability of this technology, where reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) and methanation as competitive reactions play key roles in controlling product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation. So far, a series of metal-based catalysts with adjustable strong metal-support interactions, metal surface structure, and local environment of active sites have been developed, significantly tuning the product selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation. Herein, we describe the recent advances in the fundamental understanding of the two reactions in CO2 hydrogenation, in terms of emerging new catalysts which regulate the catalytic structure and switch reaction pathways, where the strong metal-support interactions, metal surface structure, and local environment of the active sites are particularly discussed. They are expected to enable efficient catalyst design for minimizing the deep hydrogenation and controlling the reaction towards the RWGS reaction. Finally, the potential utilization of these strategies for improving the performance of industrial catalysts is examined.

Abstract:Growing interest has been shown in controlling the selectivity of CO 2 hydrogenation to produce specific compounds and fuels with additional value. However, it is challenging to selectively generate target products due to the complexity and diversity of the products in CO 2 hydrogenation reaction. Herein, we reported a finding in the CO 2 hydrogenation reaction: selectivity could be totally reversed by just altering support interface types on Cu-based catalysts. Cu/ZnO-MgO catalysts showed high CH 3 OH selectivity, while Cu/ZnO-CoO catalysts exhibited good selectivity of CH 4 . According to in-depth characterization, varied basicity sites most likely as results of the different support interface types. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations pointed that support interface types altered the adsorption position of H 2 COO* on catalysts and affect the adsorption and activation of intermediates, and thus resulted in noticeably varied product selectivity. This study demonstrated the value of regulating CO 2 hydrogenation selectivity via support interface types on Cu-based catalysts, which can aid in the rational design of catalysts for not only CO 2 hydrogenation but also other significant reactions.

Abstract:As the electron transfer to CO2 is a critical step in the activation of CO2 , it is of significant importance to engineer the electronic properties of CO2 hydrogenation catalysts to enhance their activity. Herein, we prepared Pt3 Co nanocrystals with improved catalytic performance towards CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Pt3 Co octapods, Pt3 Co nanocubes, Pt octapods, and Pt nanocubes were tested, and the Pt3 Co octapods achieved the best catalytic activity. Both the presence of multiple sharp tips and charge transfer between Pt and Co enabled the accumulation of negative charges on the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods. Moreover, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy confirmed that the high negative charge density at the Pt atoms in the vertices of the Pt3 Co octapods promotes the activation of CO2 and accordingly enhances the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Ever‐increasing attention is paid to the sustainable utilization of CO2 in the atmosphere out of environmental and economic considerations. The deep‐going clarification of the effective and ineffective metal‐support interactions (MSI) in the supported catalysts for the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation is particularly needed to design highly active nanocatalysts. How to tune the MSI to be effective for the selectivity of goal hydrogenation products is a significant but rather challenging subject. In this work, we demonstrate that the selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation can be regulated from preferential CH4 production to preferential CO production by varying the nature of the electronic MSI for ceria supported noble metal nanoclusters, and the effective MSI play a pivotal role for the catalytic systems with opposite hydrogenation selectivity. The modulation of the effective MSI for the selectivity in CO2 hydrogenation sheds new light on the comprehensive understanding of the MSI and interfacial effects in terms of tailoring and controlling the performance of supported heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs), characterized by the encapsulation of metal nanoparticles by the support oxide, have a significant impact on various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. In this study, we present our investigations on tuning the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation through regulating the SMSI in a Ni/Sm2O3 catalyst. Our results demonstrate that the complete encapsulation of Ni nanoparticles with amorphous Sm2O3, achieved through H-2 reduction, leads to nearly full selectivity to CO. In contrast, with controlled in situ thermal postannealing in an H-2/CO2/N-2 mixture, the encapsulated Sm2O3 layer can be partially removed and crystallized, as revealed by atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses, which results in enhanced activity and a full selectivity toward CH4. In addition, the prolonged postannealing durations completely remove the Sm2O3 overlayer, causing a decline in CO2 methanation activity. These findings underscore the critical role of the SMSI effect in CO2 hydrogenation activity and offer valuable insights for regulating SMSI to produce targeted value-added chemicals.

Abstract:The influence of metal particle size over heterogeneous catalysts on the catalytic performance has always been an interesting subject due to its significance from both fundamental and practical perspectives. In this work, we regulated the synthesis of TiO2 by the hydrolysis of different titanium precursors, and as-prepared TiO2 supports were employed to load Ru with impregnation method. Interestingly, we synthesized three Ru-TiO2 catalysts with different Ru particle sizes of 1.1, 2.9 and 5.2 nm. The Ru-TiO2 catalysts were next tested for CO2 hydrogenation reaction, the results show that the medium Ru particles on TiO2 exhibited the best CO2 methanation activity. Based on the characterizations, we observed that the medium Ru particles exhibited the best redox properties compared with small and large Ru particles, which was beneficial to the H2 dissociation; in addition, the medium Ru particles exhibited a moderate ability to activate CO2, resulting in the most favorable formation and decomposition of bidentate bicarbonate. Consequently, the Ru-TiO2 catalyst with medium Ru particles showed the highest activity for CO2 methanation. This study provides a new method to prepare Ru-TiO2 catalysts with different Ru sizes and also presents an understanding of Ru particle size effects on CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Bifunctional metal/zeolite materials are some of the most suitable catalysts for the direct hydroalkylation of benzene to cyclohexylbenzene. The overall catalytic performance of this reaction is strongly influenced by the hydrogenation, which is dependent on the metal sizes. Thus, systematically investigating the metal size effects in the hydroalkylation of benzene is essential. In this work, we successfully synthesized Ru and Pd nanoparticles on Sinopec Composition Materials No.1 zeolite with various metal sizes. We demonstrated the size-dependent catalytic activity of zeolite-supported Ru and Pd catalysts in the hydroalkylation of benzene, which can be attributed to the size-induced hydrogen spillover capability differences. Our work presents new insights into the hydroalkylation reaction and may open up a new avenue for the smart design of advanced metal/zeolite bi-functional catalysts.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising method to convert CO2 into valuable chemical raw materials. Cu-based catalysts have been widely concerned as "star" materials that can reduce CO2 to hydrocarbon and C2+ products. Naked Cu has the disadvantages of poor selectivity and low stability. However, supported Cu-based catalysts show excellent catalytic performance due to the interaction between Cu-based metals and supports. There are apparent differences in the interaction between Cu species of different sizes and supports, affecting selectivity. We discussed the supported Cu-based catalysts from the effect of size on performance. This paper first summarized the mechanism of CO2RR. Then, the size effects of supported Cu-based single atom, diatom, clusters and nanoparticles on the catalytic activity and selectivity of CO2RR were emphatically discussed and reviewed. Finally, this paper presented challenges and expectations for the design and selection of catalysts.

Abstract:Indium oxide (In2O3) and In2O3-supported catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol have attracted increasing interest because of their high methanol selectivity, even at elevated temperatures. However, the stability behavior of In2O3 is still not clear. In this work, the size effect of In2O3 on activity and stability has been investigated. It was found that the smaller In2O3 nanoparticle possesses more surface oxygen vacancies as active sites for CO2 activation and H2 dissociation. Higher initial activity is achieved. However, the smaller In2O3 nanoparticle is prone to be over-reduced during the reaction, causing a deactivation of In2O3. On the contrary, the larger In2O3 nanoparticle has a lower initial activity but effectively prevents the over-reduction. The larger particle size helps the stabilization of surface oxygen vacancies and enhances the stability of In2O3 for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The present study of the size effect is important for the improvement in the stability of the In2O3 catalyst by either metal loading (to form the In2O3-supported catalyst) or the formation of In2O3–ZrO2 solid solution.

Abstract:By simply changing the oxide support, the selectivity of a metal-oxide catalysts can be tuned. For the CO2 hydrogenation over PtCo bimetallic catalysts supported on different reducible oxides (CeO2 , ZrO2 , and TiO2 ), replacing a TiO2 support by CeO2 or ZrO2 selectively strengthens the binding of C,O-bound and O-bound species at the PtCo-oxide interface, leading to a different product selectivity. These results reveal mechanistic insights into how the catalytic performance of metal-oxide catalysts can be fine-tuned.

Abstract:Metal–support interactions have a strong impact on the performance of heterogeneous catalysts. Specific sites at the metal–support interface can give rise to unusual high reactivity, and there is a growing interest in optimizing not only the properties of metal particles but also the metal–support interface. Here, we demonstrate how varying the particle size of the support (ceria–zirconia) can be used to tune the metal–support interactions, resulting in a substantially enhanced CO2 hydrogenation rate. A combination of X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy provides insight into the active sites at the interface between cobalt and ceria–zirconia involved in CO2 hydrogenation to CH4. Reverse oxygen spillover from the support during treatment in hydrogen results in the generation of oxygen vacancies. Stabilization of cobalt particles by ceria–zirconia particles of intermediate size leads to oxygen spillover to the support during the CO2 and CO dissociation steps, followed by further hydrogenation of the resulting intermediates on cobalt.

Abstract:Size effect plays a crucial role in catalytic hydrogenation. The highly dispersed ultrasmall clusters with a limited number of metal atoms are one candidate of the next generation catalysts that bridge the single-atom metal catalysts and metal nanoparticles. However, for the unfavorable electronic property and their interaction with the substrates, they usually exhibit sluggish activity. Taking advantage of the small size, their catalytic property would be mediated by surface binding species. The combination of metal cluster coordination chemistry brings new opportunity. CO poisoning is notorious for Pt group metal catalysts as the strong adsorption of CO would block the active centers. In this work, we will demonstrate that CO could serve as a promoter for the catalytic hydrogenation when ultrasmall Pd clusters are employed. By means of DFT calculations, we show that Pdn n=2‐147 clusters display sluggish activity for hydrogenation due to the too strong binding of hydrogen atom and reaction intermediates thereon, whereas introducing CO would reduce the binding energies of vicinal sites, thus enhancing the hydrogenation reaction. Experimentally, supported Pd2CO catalysts are fabricated by depositing preestablished [Pd2(μ-CO)2Cl4]2- clusters on oxides and demonstrated as an outstanding catalyst for the hydrogenation of styrene. The promoting effect of CO is further verified experimentally by removing and reintroducing a proper amount of CO on the Pd cluster catalysts.

Abstract:CO2 hydrogenation over ZrO2-supported NiFe catalysts is investigated to illustrate the role of Fe in controlling the activity and selectivity, and to reveal the structure-function relationship between metaloxide interfaces and catalytic selectivities. The Ni-ZrO2 interfaces and Ni-FeOx interfaces are identified as the most likely active sites for the methanation reaction and the reverse water-gas shift reaction, respectively, using combined in-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques. The reaction mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation to CH4 on the Ni-ZrO2 interfacial sites and to CO on the Ni-FeO C interfacial sites are further revealed by combined in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the binding energy of absorbed CO (*CO) is a key descriptor to predict CO2 hydrogenation selectivity: weak interaction (e.g., Ni-Fe0 x interfaces) promotes *CO desorption to increase CO selectivity, while moderate interaction (e.g., Ni-ZrO2 interfaces) facilitates further hydrogenation of *CO to produce CH4.
