Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts are extensively utilized in methanol synthesis from CO and CO2, which is a vital industrial process and a promising strategy for mitigating CO2 emissions when renewable green hydrogen is employed. Despite the considerable efforts to study CO2 hydrogenation over Cu/ZnO, understanding the structure of active sites on Cu/ZnO has remained a major challenge. We studied a series of Cu/ZnO catalysts with various Cu particle sizes and found a volcano-like pattern in methanol selectivity with respect to the Cu particle size. TEM, XPS, and TPD measurements demonstrated the migration of ZnOx species onto the Cu particle surface and showed a correlation between the ZnOx-Cu interface and methanol yield. The size of supported Cu particles affects the migration of Zn species onto Cu particle surfaces. Our study has thus explicated the role of the ZnOx-Cu interface in catalyzing CO2 hydrogenation to methanol.

Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.
Highly dispersed metal doping to ZnZr oxide catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol: Insight into hydrogen spillover

Abstract:Metallic oxide based catalysts have received much attention in CO2 hydrogenation to methanol because of their high methanol selectivity and long-term stability. But the relatively weak hydrogenation ability leads to low methanol activity. Here, we introduce a small amount of Cu (molar fraction<2%) into ZnZrOx to form ternary metal oxide solid solution catalysts (x% CuZnZr) to promote methanol production. The optimized 0.5% CuZnZr catalyst performs CO2 conversion of 9.5% and methanol yield of 7.2%, both of which are about 4 times that of ZnZr catalyst at comparable methanol selectivity (76% versus 80%) at 290 °C. Chemisorption and in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses reveal that the enhanced activity is attributed to the improved hydrogenation capacity and accelerated transformation of HCOO* to CH3O* caused by hydrogen spillover from well dispersed Cu. This can also be applied to trace amount of Pd or Pt doping to ZnZrOx.

Abstract:The rise in atmospheric CO2 concentration and the concomitant rise in global surface temperature have prompted massive research effort in designing catalytic routes to utilize CO2 as a feedstock. Prime among these is the hydrogenation of CO2 to make methanol, which is a key commodity chemical intermediate, a hydrogen storage molecule, and a possible future fuel for transport sectors that cannot be electrified. Pd/ZnO has been identified as an effective candidate as a catalyst for this reaction, yet there has been no attempt to gain a fundamental understanding of how this catalyst works and more importantly to establish specific design criteria for CO2 hydrogenation catalysts. Here, we show that Pd/ZnO catalysts have the same metal particle composition, irrespective of the different synthesis procedures and types of ZnO used here. We demonstrate that all of these Pd/ZnO catalysts exhibit the same activity trend. In all cases, the β-PdZn 1:1 alloy is produced and dictates the catalysis. This conclusion is further supported by the relationship between conversion and selectivity and their small variation with ZnO surface area in the range 6-80 m2g-1. Without alloying with Zn, Pd is a reverse water-gas shift catalyst and when supported on alumina and silica is much less active for CO2 conversion to methanol than on ZnO. Our approach is applicable to the discovery and design of improved catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation and will aid future catalyst discovery.

Abstract:The metal-oxide interaction is of significance to the construction of active sites for Cu-catalyzed CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. This study examines the effect of ZnO and ZrO2 composition on the Cu/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst structure and surface properties to further tune the catalytic activity for methanol synthesis. The ZnO/ZrO2 ratio can impact the CuZn alloy formation from strong Cu-ZnO interactions and the surface basic sites for CO2 adsorption at the Cu-ZrO2 interface. The proportional correlation of the CuZn alloy content and CO2 desorption amount with the space-time yield (STY) of methanol reveals a synergistic interaction between Cu and oxides (ZnO and ZrO2) that enhances methanol synthesis. The optimized Cu/ZnO/ZrO2 catalyst exhibits higher STY relative to the traditional Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst. The obtained results presented herein can provide insight into the catalyst design for methanol synthesis from CO2.

Abstract:A Pd2.0/CZZ catalyst (CeZrZnOx supported Pd catalyst with 2.0 wt% Pd) with dendritic morphology and highly dispersed Pd was prepared for methanol (MeOH) synthesis from CO2 hydrogenation. The deposition–precipitation method, higher specific surface area, and pore volume of CZZ support improve the dispersion degree of Pd on the CZZ support. The ultra-dispersed and optimized amount of Pd plays a crucial role in H2 dissociation, generating more spillover hydrogen on the Pd active sites, thus improving the CO2 hydrogenation performance. Moreover, introducing the optimized Pd of the Pd2.0/CZZ catalyst increases Ce3+/Ce4+ ratios, which are critical in generating more oxygen vacancies of the CZZ support, thus promoting the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules. Pd2.0/CZZ catalyst presents the highest CO2 conversions (29.1 %), superior MeOH selectivity (43.8 %), highest MeOH yield (12.7 %), highest turnover frequency (TOF) (87.3 h−1), highest STY (5.11 molMeOH kg-1h−1) and excellent 100 h long-term stability among a series of Pdx/CZZ catalysts and the reference PdZn/CZ-Co catalyst. The in situ DRIFTS and density functional theory (DFT) simulation suggests that Pd2.0/CZZ catalyst with adequate Pd particle size and relatively high Pd metal dispersion promotes the pathway to *HCOO and *CH3O as primary intermediates of CO2 hydrogenation to MeOH.

Abstract:Catalysts with the CeTi bimetallic modified dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres (CTD) as supports, and the PdZn as active metal phase, PdZn/CTD catalysts with higher Pd metal dispersion and more oxygen vacancies were synthesized for efficient CO2 hydrogenation to methanol (MeOH). The modification of PdZn/CTD using CeTi metals can increase the dispersion of PdZn and improve the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratios. Higher active metal dispersion of PdZn/CTD catalyst is conducive to more H2 adsorption and to the expose of activation sites. Higher Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio of PdZn/CTD is beneficial to generate more oxygen vacancies, which can adsorb and activate CO2 molecules efficiently. The optimized PdZn/CTD catalysts exhibit superior CO2 conversion (33.6 %), MeOH selectivity (32.9 %), MeOH yield (11.1 %), TOF value (22.5 h−1), space–time yield (STY) (4.44 molMeOH kg-1 h−1) and 100 h long-term stability. Besides, through in-situ DRIFTS, HCOO* and CH3O* species are found to be the primary intermediates of the CO2 hydrogenation to MeOH reaction over the PdZn/CTD catalysts.

Abstract:The direct hydrogenation of CO2 into methanol is crucial for providing a means of CO2 fixation and a way to store cleanly produced hydrogen in a more energy-dense and transportable form. Here we have prepared two series of Pd/ZnO catalysts, both by immobilisation of PVA-protected Pd colloids and by Pd impregnation of PdCl2 to investigate structure activity relationships for direct CO2 hydrogenation. Very different performances were found for the different preparation methods, and the Pd loading and pre-reduction of the catalysts were shown to be important factors for optimising methanol yield. The crucial factor for high methanol yield is the formation of a Pd–Zn alloy, either during the reaction itself, or better by high temperature pre-reduction. The formation of the alloy greatly reduces CO production by the reverse water gas shift reaction. The catalysts prepared by sol-immobilisation were relatively stable to thermal treatment. In contrast, the impregnated catalysts were much less thermally stable, due to the presence of remnant chloride on the surface of the catalyst, which was absent for the case of sol immobilisation preparation. The results illustrate the importance of controlling the PdZn particle size and its surface structure for the catalysts to achieve high methanol selectivity (60%, the rest being CO) and conversion (11%) at 250°C and 20bar. Selectivity for sol-immobilised catalysts decreases from 60% at 3nm average diameter, to 20% at 7nm.

Abstract:Different active metals (PdCu, PdZn, CuZn, CuGa, and CuNi) over novel dendritic Ce0.3Zr0.7O2 (CZ) support were optimized to investigate their metal alloy interactions and further utilize their surface properties of the spherical morphology and the open pores of the dendritic support. The nature of the dendritic support offers a distinctive property in which it can increases the distribution of active sites. This variety of bimetallic phases withhold a distinctive interaction characteristic with the support that could promote CO2 hydrogenation to methanol by improving the oxygen vacancies and modifying the catalyst's reduction property. The addition of ZnO species into PdZn/CZ catalyst and the higher dispersion degrees of active metals could generate more oxygen vacancies that can improve and stabilize the methoxy species and promote the formate routes, thus, improve the activity of CO2 hydrogenation to methanol reaction. PdZn/CZ catalyst displayed the highest CO2 conversions (25.7 %), methanol yield (6.9 %), and superior 100 h long-term stability than those of other bimetallic catalysts. The best CO2 hydrogenation activity of the PdZn/CZ catalyst can be ascribed to the CO2 adsorption capabilities of CZ support that generated added oxygen vacancies and hydrogen dissociation performance of the Pd-ZnO active site.

Abstract:It is well known that performance of some key catalytic reactions has a strong dependance on metal catalyst surfaces. In current work, this concept is further extended to CuPd alloy supported zirconia oxide inverse catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. A combined DFT and microkinetic simulation study revealed that not only the metal substrate surface but also the precise exposed metal atoms on substrate have a pivotal influence on catalytic mechanism and performance of inverse catalyst. CuPd(100), (111), and (110) surfaces with either Cu and Pd terminations have been examined which provided five metal substrate as support for inverse catalyst. Three different mechanisms are explored at the same footing including Formate pathway, RWGS + CO-hydro pathway, and CO2 direct activation pathway, which are taking place at interfacial sites between metal alloy and oxide. The first hydrogenation step on reaction pathway is a key factor to determine mechanism. The calculations indicated that inverse catalyst with CuPd(100) substrate possessed a better performance than (110) and (111) for both Formate and RWGS + CO-hydro mechanisms, on the other hand the reaction pathway is more sensitive to exposed atoms on metal substrate. The best inverse catalyst, Zr3O6/CuPd(100) with either Cu or Pd terminations, demonstrated a methanol formation TOF above 0.30 site-1·s-1 and selectivity is above 90% at 573K as obtained from microkinetic simulation. The coverage analysis indicated the most populated species is HCOO* which is consistent with experimental reports. Both kinetic and thermodynamics controls steps are identified from DRC analysis for the best performed catalysts. Overall, current study certified the catalytic performance of inverse Zr3O6/CuPd catalyst and demonstrated the tunable effects of metal alloy substrate which is capable for effective optimization.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs), characterized by the encapsulation of metal nanoparticles by the support oxide, have a significant impact on various heterogeneous catalytic reactions. In this study, we present our investigations on tuning the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation through regulating the SMSI in a Ni/Sm2O3 catalyst. Our results demonstrate that the complete encapsulation of Ni nanoparticles with amorphous Sm2O3, achieved through H-2 reduction, leads to nearly full selectivity to CO. In contrast, with controlled in situ thermal postannealing in an H-2/CO2/N-2 mixture, the encapsulated Sm2O3 layer can be partially removed and crystallized, as revealed by atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses, which results in enhanced activity and a full selectivity toward CH4. In addition, the prolonged postannealing durations completely remove the Sm2O3 overlayer, causing a decline in CO2 methanation activity. These findings underscore the critical role of the SMSI effect in CO2 hydrogenation activity and offer valuable insights for regulating SMSI to produce targeted value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Indium oxide (In2O3) and In2O3-supported catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol have attracted increasing interest because of their high methanol selectivity, even at elevated temperatures. However, the stability behavior of In2O3 is still not clear. In this work, the size effect of In2O3 on activity and stability has been investigated. It was found that the smaller In2O3 nanoparticle possesses more surface oxygen vacancies as active sites for CO2 activation and H2 dissociation. Higher initial activity is achieved. However, the smaller In2O3 nanoparticle is prone to be over-reduced during the reaction, causing a deactivation of In2O3. On the contrary, the larger In2O3 nanoparticle has a lower initial activity but effectively prevents the over-reduction. The larger particle size helps the stabilization of surface oxygen vacancies and enhances the stability of In2O3 for the hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The present study of the size effect is important for the improvement in the stability of the In2O3 catalyst by either metal loading (to form the In2O3-supported catalyst) or the formation of In2O3–ZrO2 solid solution.

Abstract:Tailoring strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) have been verified to become an efficient strategy for developing novel heterogeneous catalysts. Here, both TiO2 supports (anatase (A) and rutile (R)) were employed to prepare the Pd/TiO2 catalysts and strongly titania-crystal-phase-dependent Pd-TiO2 SMSIs and catalysis in CO2 hydrogenation were observed. A-TiO2 is more facile to undergo Pd-TiO2 SMSIs than R-TiO2, which could be relevant to better reducibility over calcined Pd/A-TiO2 C catalyst. Catalytic performance of the Pd/TiO2-R (reduced) catalysts in CO2 hydrogenation are sensitive to the Pd-TiO2 structures, among which the Pd nanoparticles mostly encapsulated by TiO2-x overlayers over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst with more prominent SMSIs is more intrinsically active. This could be ascribed to both stronger H-spillover and hydrogenation property and better CO2 activation capacity over Pd/A-TiO2-R catalyst. However, its catalytic activity is seriously restricted by the number of intrinsically active sites due to less exposed Pd atoms to block H2 activation sites. These results clearly demonstrate the crystal-phase engineering as an efficient strategy to tailor the SMSIs for developing improved heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Utilization of CO2 with renewable hydrogen to produce value-added chemicals is highly desirable to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Methanol is a key intermediate for hydrocarbon products as they require a high methanol selectivity at high temperature to connect the methanol-to-olefin and methanol-to-aromatic processes. To improve the performance of CO2 hydrogenation at a higher temperature, this study prepared a 0.1% Pd/ZnZr catalyst using the coprecipitation method, which showed an 87% methanol selectivity and a space time yield of 735 gmethanol kgcat–1 h–1 at 320 °C, significantly higher than that of the binary ZnZr solid solution (434 gmethanol kgcat–1 h–1). The characterization of the catalyst revealed that Pd2+ species formed a PdZn alloy from the ZrO2 lattice. Abstract:Interesting phenomena such as encapsulation, charge transfer, and bond formation, etc. induced by classical strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) during high-temperature reduction have received wide attention for their potential to determine the catalytic behavior of supported metal catalysts. However, a systematically scientific understanding about the effects of SMSI on CO2 hydrogenation performance is still insufficient primarily due to the diversities in catalysts and reaction conditions. Here, we outline the "double-edged sword effects" of SMSI on the catalytic activity, stability, and even selectivity of hydrogenation of CO2 to C1 high-value compounds (CO, methane, and methanol). Specifically, moderate SMSI could efficiently optimize the structural and electronic properties of catalysts and tune the conversion of key reaction intermediates involved in CO2 hydrogenation, thereby enhancing the catalytic performance. Nevertheless, excessive SMSI is fatal for methanation and methanol synthesis catalysts, because the encapsulation of active centers suppresses the further hydrogenation of reactive intermediates. Additionally, SMSI could alter the CO2 hydrogenation selectivity by regulating the dissociation of H-2 and the breakage of C-O bonds. Subsequently, the structural dependencies of SMSI on supported catalysts are emphasized with the aim of providing guidance for developing CO2 hydrogenation catalysts with an appropriate SMSI by rational design. To conclude, highlighted perspectives on the deeper understanding of SMSI in CO2 hydrogenation catalysts are also presented.

Abstract:The development of catalysts with high-density interfacial sites is crucial for enhancing catalytic performance. However, the efficient construction of interfacial sites remains a significant challenge. In this study, we introduced a ligand-regulated co-precipitation synthesis strategy to fabricate a Cu@ZnO1-x/Al2O3 catalyst. The catalyst possesses high-density partially-reduced ZnO1-x-Cu interfacial sites and exhibits enhanced activity for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. The methanol space-time yield (STY) of the Cu@ZnO1-x/Al2O3 was 3.8 times higher than that of the commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 after 14 h of continuous reaction. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and in situ Raman spectroscopy indicated that Cu-X-Zn linkage ligands formed in the precursor solution during hydrothermal treatment facilitated zinc-malachite formation during co-precipitation, which promoted Cu-ZnO interface formation during H-2 reduction. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed partially-reduced ZnO1-x-Cu interfaces were more active via the formate pathway. This work reveals a novel and robust route for designing catalysts with high-density interfacial sites, shedding light on catalyst development.
Strong Electronic Oxide–Support Interaction over In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 for Highly Selective CO 2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Abstract:Metal oxides are widely employed in heterogeneous catalysis, but it remains challenging to determine their exact structure and understand the reaction mechanisms at the molecular level due to their structural complexity, in particular for binary oxides. This paper describes the observation of the strong electronic interaction between In2O3 and monoclinic ZrO2 (m-ZrO2) by quasi-in-situ XPS experiments combined with theoretical studies, which leads to support-dependent methanol selectivity. In2O3/m-ZrO2 exhibits methanol selectivity up to 84.6% with a CO2 conversion of 12.1%. Moreover, at a wide range of temperatures, the methanol yield of In2O3/m-ZrO2 is much higher than that of In2O3/t-ZrO2 (t-: tetragonal), which is due to the high dispersion of the In–O–In structure over m-ZrO2 as determined by in situ Raman spectra. The electron transfer from m-ZrO2 to In2O3 is confirmed by XPS and DFT calculations and improves the electron density of In2O3, which promotes H2 dissociation and hydrogenation of formate intermediates to methanol. Abstract:Intermetallic PdZn-ZnO catalysts supported on TiO 2 were synthesized using organic precursors and different Zn/Pd molar ratio. The use of organic Pd and Zn precursors producesf PdO and ZnO nanoparticles that facilitate the uniform formation of small intermetallic β-PdZn particles after reduction with hydrogen at 450 °C. No significant differences in formation, crystallinity or size of intermetallic PdZn particles when varying the Zn concentration in the supported catalysts were observed. The differences were in the characteristics of the ZnO particles that lead to enhanced development of the contacts between the PdZn and ZnO particles as the Zn loading on the catalysts increases. The best methanol yield (53.1 mmol MeOH ·min -1 ·mol Pd -1 ) obtained over the catalyst with highest ZnO content, was attributed to the favored formation of intermetallic β-PdZn particles on the polar ZnO surfaces and the higher amount of PdZn-ZnO interface sites for CO 2 adsorption.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of methanol via the hydrogenation of CO2, if performed efficiently and selectively, is potentially a powerful technology for CO2 mitigation. Here, we develop an active and selective Cu-Zn/SiO2 catalyst for the hydrogenation of CO2 by introducing copper and zinc onto dehydroxylated silica via surface organometallic chemistry and atomic layer deposition, respectively. At 230 °C and 25 bar, the optimized catalyst shows an intrinsic methanol formation rate of 4.3 g h-1 gCu-1 and selectivity to methanol of 83%, with a space-time yield of 0.073 g h-1 gcat-1 at a contact time of 0.06 s g mL-1. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu and Zn K-edges and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that the CuZn alloy displays reactive metal support interactions; that is, it is stable under H2 atmosphere and unstable under conditions of CO2 hydrogenation, indicating that the dealloyed structure contains the sites promoting methanol synthesis. While solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance studies identify methoxy species as the main stable surface adsorbate, transient operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy indicates that μ-HCOO*(ZnOx) species that form on the Cu-Zn/SiO2 catalyst are hydrogenated to methanol faster than the μ-HCOO*(Cu) species that are found in the Zn-free Cu/SiO2 catalyst, supporting the role of Zn in providing a higher activity in the Cu-Zn system.
