Abstract:The indirect detection by Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) has gained popularity in the long-distance hydraulic tunnel inspection, while the nonlinear dynamics of the umbilical cable may dominate the design of ROVs due to the interaction between the flexible cable and the surroundings. This paper develops a novel 6 DOF dynamic model of the ROV with the variable-length and neutrally buoyant cable effect when it goes through the long-distance hydraulic tunnel with arbitrary configurations. All the interaction phenomena are considered such as the fluid effect and the contact forces between the cable and the tunnel. The contact with the straight segments of the tunnel is null due to the neutral-buoyancy of the cable. However, the interaction with the curved corners cannot be neglected and the decay factor instead of the contact detection is proposed to model the corner effect for simplicity and efficiency. Therefore, the tensile force of the cable going through the curved underwater tunnel is deduced, which is highly related to the transient length, velocity and acceleration of the cable as well as the decay factors of the corners. The methodology is verified and applied to evaluate the cable effect of kinematic behaviors of a practical ROV.
