Abstract:Based on the theory of National Innovation System (NIS), the development history of China's indigenous innovation is separated into five stages from 1949 to 2011. In-depth analysis is taken to explore the international and political environment, innovation resources and participants of innovation activities. And then several basic elements for indigenous innovation are extracted. These basic factors include emancipating the mind, meeting local market need and cooperating between industries, universities, and research institutes. Emancipating the mind is the prerequisite of indigenous innovation; meeting the domestic market needs are the start points of indigenous innovation; and the synergy between different actors of NIS is the major driven force. And above all, the cultivation of indigenous innovation capability is an incremental process.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of problems in the practice, as well as literature review, this paper redefines the meaning ofindigenous innovation, and summarizes some misunderstandings of it. Sometimes people think it's too early for Chinese firms tocarry on indigenous innovation. Often it is mistaken as the pursuing of high-tech, as equal to technological innovation, and as largeamount of expenditure, and so on. The author argues that it is very important to clarify these misunderstandings at present, especiallyfor the implementation of the national strategy of making China an innovative country.

Abstract:This paper proposes the opportunities and challenges of firms' indigenous innovation in global manufacturing networks.The modes,mechanisms,and the path of indigenous innovation are induced.It is suggested that Chinese firms are facing the challenges of MNC control,trade dependence and the marginalization,while they have the opportunities to learn,upgrade and invest(ODI) in global manufacturing networks.Indigenous innovation is defined by two dimensions in this paper,the first dimension is the intellectual property control,and the second dimension is value chain control.And the global manufacturing networks can be divided into two contexts.The first context is that Chinese firms are participating in the foreign MNCs dominated networks,in which they adopt the secondary innovation mode and increase technological learning by network embeddedness.The second context is that Chinese firms are building their own network,in which they adopt post-secondary innovation mode and increase innovation performance by strategic assets acquisition,learning and control mechanisms based on ODI.It's concluded that a path from secondary innovation to post-secondary innovation should be implemented by Chinese firms.

Abstract:A comparative study of the innovation models of Japanese,Korean and Taiwan firms indicates that Korea adopts technology leapfrogging strategy while China's Taiwan applies technology value chain promotion strategy.But both of them depend mostly on overseas markets.However,Japan,in principle,depends on special demand of domestic markets and therefore it subverts the monopoly of European and American firms with the aid of disruptive innovation.On the basis of some new innovation theory and economic development theory,the present paper explores the path of indigenous innovation for Chinese firms from the perspective of international environment and characteristics of the domestic market.The study argues that China should establish a model of indigenous innovation with disruptive innovation as a dominant approach,together with a subsidiary approach of technology leapfrogging.This paper also argues that China should place emphasis on the new creative thinking based on a profound understanding of both Chinese customers' demands and the traditional Chinese cultural value.

Abstract:With comparison to the firms' innovation models of Japan,Korea,Singapore and Taiwan,and in terms of some new innovation theory,four basic strategic paths of indigenous innovation for developing countries,which consist of technology leapfrog,value chain promotion,disruptive innovation and FDI led,are discovered and summed up.Then how the four strategic paths make developing countries overcome the barriers in their innovations is discussed.At last,based on international environment and characteristics of domestic market,the path of indigenous innovation for Chinese firms is explored,which indicates that China has mixed path of indigenous innovation.

Abstract:As we all know, R&D has been the central focus of policy making and scholarly research in the field of innovation in the past decades, while non-R&D innovation and Innovative firms that do not perform R&D have largely been neglected by policy and academics. But as an integral part of innovation, non-R&D innovation does play an important part in enterprises' innovation process, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) whose R&D capabilities are very weak. So far, there are only few researches on non-R&D innovation, let alone the reasonable definition of non-R&D innovation. Based on existing innovation literatures, this paper gives a more clearly and reasonable definition of non-R&D innovation. Then, the paper puts forward four typical modes of non-R&D innovation with illustrative cases which indicate that non-R&D innovation is an effective innovation approach to the survival and development of SMEs.

Abstract:The reconfiguration of indigenous innovation capability is an emergency issue for emerging economy. However, the 'complementary or substitution' argument about the relationship among search strategies existed in re-cent studies, which hinders the reconfiguration of indigenous innovation capability. Thus, based on data from 376 high-tech enterprises, this paper employed cluster analysis and multi-logistic regression method to study the rela-tionship between boundary spanning knowledge search synergy and types of indigenous innovation capability du-ring its reconfiguration process. There are several important results. Firstly, there are three dominant types of tech-nological innovation capability during each stage of capability reconfiguration: a) knowledge assimilation capability dominant type; b) knowledge assimilation and integration capability lead type; c)knowledge assimilation, integration capability and creation capabilities at a high level under balanced development type. Secondly, there are different boundary spanning knowledge search synergy strategies facilitate each type of indigenous innovation capability du-ring its reconfiguration. This paper not only extends the application of synergy theory, landscape theory in the field of indigenous innovation, but also has managerial implications for enterprise indigenous innovation capability reconfiguration under emerging economy.

Abstract:Since the implementing reform and opening-up policy more than two decades ago, though China has experienced dramatic economic leaping development by importing foreign capital and technologies, it as well has suffered such dilemma that most of its enterprises have been restricted by foreign core technologies. Aiming at solving this dilemma, this paper explores the latest researches on indigenous innovation, and analyzes the long time innovation practices from the Haier Group. Through the analysis , this paper finds out that the total innovation management (TIM) is the basis of indigenous innovation, as strategic innovation is essential for directing indigenous innovation and market-oriented innovation sets up its goal, while cultural innovation builds up innovation environment and atmosphere. In the end, the paper concludes that enterprises must carry out indigenous innovation for their sustainable development, and indigenous innovation must be based on the TIM with regular mind change as the soul, last but not least, it must be directed by clear strategic goal and plan

Abstract:Authors argue that the technology-based innovation model in China has passed through three stages. The first stage is Secondary innovation. The second stage is Portfolio innovation. The third stage is Total Innovation Management (TIM). Briefly present the construction of TIM as well as the three aspects of TIM: All Elements Innovation (AEI), High Involvement Innovation (HII) and All Time-Space Innovation. This paper mainly deals with how all element innovation impacts the HII as well as the interaction between them. Finally, the experiences of one of the most successful firm (Haier) will be described as the evidence-based study.
