Abstract:This paper proposes the opportunities and challenges of firms' indigenous innovation in global manufacturing networks.The modes,mechanisms,and the path of indigenous innovation are induced.It is suggested that Chinese firms are facing the challenges of MNC control,trade dependence and the marginalization,while they have the opportunities to learn,upgrade and invest(ODI) in global manufacturing networks.Indigenous innovation is defined by two dimensions in this paper,the first dimension is the intellectual property control,and the second dimension is value chain control.And the global manufacturing networks can be divided into two contexts.The first context is that Chinese firms are participating in the foreign MNCs dominated networks,in which they adopt the secondary innovation mode and increase technological learning by network embeddedness.The second context is that Chinese firms are building their own network,in which they adopt post-secondary innovation mode and increase innovation performance by strategic assets acquisition,learning and control mechanisms based on ODI.It's concluded that a path from secondary innovation to post-secondary innovation should be implemented by Chinese firms.

Abstract:This paper reviews the evolution of the five-generation innovation process modes, namely technology push, market-pull, demand/market pull, interactive and coupling, integration/parallel and system integration and network(SIN) mode. Based on these analyses, some enlightenment to the Chinese enterprises is discussed. This paper argues that, in general, most Chinese enterprises are still at the second generation (market pulling) or the third generation (coupling and interacting) of innovation process mode, and only a few leading enterprises are marching towards the fourth or the fifth generations of the innovation process. The Chinese enterprises should accelerate the evolution process of innovation, and even can realize leap-type development by utilizing the newcoming advantage, and using the development of five generations of modes of the innovation process and experiences of the domestic and international successful innovative enterprises for reference.
From Secondary Innovation to Total Innovation Management – with the Case of Small and Medium Enterprises

Abstract:This paper discusses the evolutionary process of technology innovation and innovation management in Chinese enterprises since 1950. After a brief introduction of innovation environment in China, the transition from imitation to improvement and innovation, which is the vital technological development avenue for most of Chinese firms, is emphasised. To accomplish such innovation path efficiently and effectively requires the paradigm shift for secondary innovation to portfolio innovation during 1980s to 1990s. At the end of last century, the new paradigm of innovation, i.e. total innovation management (TIM), appeared in Chinese firm, which not merely emphasise the integration between technological innovation and non-technological innovation, but also includes all innovators and all time-space innovation. Case studies and survey results were discussed as the evidence of TIM in both large firm (as Haier) and SMEs. Finally, some brief remarks to emphasise the way of innovation taken by Chinese firms in the last 50 years.

Abstract:Firstly,considering the gap on the controversy about the indigenous innovation concept and dimension, based on knowledge-based view of capabilities,this paper differentiated and analyzed secondary innovation capability, integrated innovation capability and original innovation capability.Secondly,according to the lack of current academic research on the evolution path of indigenous innovation capabilities of enterprises under the transition context, this paper analyzes and summarizes the evolution path of indigenous innovation capabilities under the transition context through a longitudinal case study of Haier Group.The results show that:for the enterprise,which introduced technology from outside as a starting point,the evolution path of its indigenous innovation capabilities is starting from secondary innovation capability,and transferring to integrated innovation capacity,and ultimately to original innovation capability.Last but not least,the absorptive capacity is inherent basis in this evolution mode.In addition,the historical pressure and random events in this process play a role of an external thrust.This study opens the black box of indigenous innovation capabilities,and riches dynamic capabilities,technology catch-up and the co-evolution theory as well as provides practical suggestion for firms innovation and development activities under transition context.
Non-R&D Innovation: A Neglected Innovation Approach for Chinese SMEs

Abstract:As we all know, R&D has been the central focus of policy making and scholarly research in the field of innovation in the past decades, while non-R&D innovation and Innovative firms that do not perform R&D have largely been neglected by policy and academics. But as an integral part of innovation, non-R&D innovation does play an important part in enterprises' innovation process, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) whose R&D capabilities are very weak. So far, there are only few researches on non-R&D innovation, let alone the reasonable definition of non-R&D innovation. Based on existing innovation literatures, this paper gives a more clearly and reasonable definition of non-R&D innovation. Then, the paper puts forward four typical modes of non-R&D innovation with illustrative cases which indicate that non-R&D innovation is an effective innovation approach to the survival and development of SMEs.

Abstract:This paper introduces the evolutionary process of technological innovation and technology management in Chinese enterprises since 1949. First, the transition of corporate management and technology management in China is introduced in comparison to Western-style management. Then, based on the historical description and case studies, the typical technology development process, especially the processes of technological acquisition, learning and secondary innovation in Chinese enterprises, is analyzed. The integration between technology acquisition and in-house design and R&D is emphasized. The authors suggest that "assimilation and self-design upon imported technology" (3-I policy) is the suitable and vital technology development avenue for most Chinese firms. To accomplish such a technological avenue, coordination, which exists between product innovation and process innovation, corporate strategy and technology strategy, and technology evolution and organizational change must be organized well and dynamically. As Chinese firms face more severe competition than ever, more attention should be paid to the development of indigenous capabilities for technological innovation. The firms' innovation system (FIS), which emphasizes the infrastructure support for a firms entrepreneurship, R&D system, and organization, as well as high-talent personnel, should be established or improved. Thus, technology strategy and the technological innovation system are currently the two key issues of management of technology (MOT) in China and will continue to be into the coming century.

Abstract:Developing countries focus on radical innovation naturally when they implement the technology innovation to catch up with Developed countries. However, recent studies have indicated a high rate of failures in the radical innovation. This paper illustrates the obstacles for developing countries to implement the radical innovation. Then we introduce a new innovation method - Open-Disruptive Innovation (ODI). With this method, we can obtain the technological resources from outside regularly and improve the core competitiveness effectively. Actually, many companies in China achieve success with this method. It is one of the best methods for Developing Countries to achieve the independent innovation. The paper cites two China's cases to verify ODI effective in enhancing the capability of independent innovation and also summarizes the law of the innovation practice.

Abstract:A comparative study of the innovation models of Japanese,Korean and Taiwan firms indicates that Korea adopts technology leapfrogging strategy while China's Taiwan applies technology value chain promotion strategy.But both of them depend mostly on overseas markets.However,Japan,in principle,depends on special demand of domestic markets and therefore it subverts the monopoly of European and American firms with the aid of disruptive innovation.On the basis of some new innovation theory and economic development theory,the present paper explores the path of indigenous innovation for Chinese firms from the perspective of international environment and characteristics of the domestic market.The study argues that China should establish a model of indigenous innovation with disruptive innovation as a dominant approach,together with a subsidiary approach of technology leapfrogging.This paper also argues that China should place emphasis on the new creative thinking based on a profound understanding of both Chinese customers' demands and the traditional Chinese cultural value.

Abstract:Based on the theory of National Innovation System (NIS), the development history of China's indigenous innovation is separated into five stages from 1949 to 2011. In-depth analysis is taken to explore the international and political environment, innovation resources and participants of innovation activities. And then several basic elements for indigenous innovation are extracted. These basic factors include emancipating the mind, meeting local market need and cooperating between industries, universities, and research institutes. Emancipating the mind is the prerequisite of indigenous innovation; meeting the domestic market needs are the start points of indigenous innovation; and the synergy between different actors of NIS is the major driven force. And above all, the cultivation of indigenous innovation capability is an incremental process.

Abstract:Since 1950 s,the role of innovation in driving economic growthattracts more and more scholars and practioners. After decades of development,research on innovation has become increasingly multi-disciplinary as scholars from different disciplines collaborate to address the significant issue of innovation management.Enterprise is the main actors for innovation. Thus,innovative enterprise is micro-foundation of sustainable economic development.Due to weak technological base,enterprise in China has experienced technology catch-up phase based on the advantage of latecomer.However,firm innovation system building activities in these enterprises are still stay in the technical management phase. Most enterprises in China simply consider innovation as technological issues,rather than a sort of totalinnovation management paradigm that including strategy, market, organizational, institutional, and cultural elements in building firm innovation system. Following Schumpeter's view that innovation is a new combination of elements,enterprises in China make great efforts in building a technological system,rather than a firm innovation system. This paper argues that firms overestimating technological issues and overlooking nontechnological issue result in a lack of innovative vitality.By backtracking relevant theories on innovation,this paper suggests that research on innovation can be divided into two categories:innovation of economics and innovation of management. The former emphasizes exploring the macro level mechanisms of the way innovation drives economic development,and the latter concentrates on the micro-level analysis of the mechanisms of leveraging firms' innovative capabilities. However,the issue of driving forces of firm innovation system is less discussed.Based on the theoretical background,this paper put forward a dual core model that may helps firms build a successful firm innovation system. The dual core refers to firm's innovative capabilities and driving forces for innovation. On the one hand,firm's system of innovative capabilities should include technological,financial,cultural and all-involvement innovation( AII) activities.Specifically,technological capabilities is key to firms' competitive advantages; financial capabilities can facilitate the knowledge accumulation by providing enough RD expenditure; cultural capabilities can help guide,regulate and coordinate the behavior of the members of the organization and thus affecting the organization's ability to innovate; AII is key to boosting innovation by high involvement of employees. On the other hand,firm's system driving forces of innovation should include technology-push,market-pull,governance-push and all innovators-pull. Specifically,technology change helps firms update their knowledge base and promote more innovative products; market orientation helps firms better understand customer needs and develop more new products through user innovation paradigm; the governance and entrepreneurship helps point out the firms' direction for innovation and future development; all innovators can help implement the firms' innovation strategy by high involvement of employees.

As a matter of fact, the innovation process is a dynamic, non-linear and systematic process, which makes the traditional innovation management too simple and inappropriate in a long term view. By reviewing these works and investigation results of some leading firms in China, this paper advances a new paradigm for innovation management, i.e., portfolio innovation, to integrate technological, organizational and institutional factors from a strategic and systematic view.

Abstract:Innovation capability is accumulated internally rather than acquired from other enterprises. With the development of enterprises, innovation capability developed dynamically based on the external environment and internal needs. Based on the analysis of three longitudinal cases, the rules of the incremental development of innovation capability can be summarized as follows: (1) Technological innovation capability, as one of the most important element is developed from imitating capability to creatively imitating capability to indigenous innovation capability. The evolution of technological innovation capability can be characterized of the transformation from low-level capability to high-level capability. (2) Innovation capability is composed of core technological capability and complementary capability. With the enterprise's development, the synergy between core technologies and complementary assets can promote the cultivation and development of innovation capability which demonstrate two major patterns including the extension of existing core technology with complementary assets and the involvement of new core technology. (3)The incremental development of innovation capability has changed from that of single element innovation capability leveraging to portfolio innovation capability leveraging, and then to total innovation capability leveraging. TIM theory has provided an appropriate framework to explore the evolution of innovation capability.
