Abstract:This paper proposes the opportunities and challenges of firms' indigenous innovation in global manufacturing networks.The modes,mechanisms,and the path of indigenous innovation are induced.It is suggested that Chinese firms are facing the challenges of MNC control,trade dependence and the marginalization,while they have the opportunities to learn,upgrade and invest(ODI) in global manufacturing networks.Indigenous innovation is defined by two dimensions in this paper,the first dimension is the intellectual property control,and the second dimension is value chain control.And the global manufacturing networks can be divided into two contexts.The first context is that Chinese firms are participating in the foreign MNCs dominated networks,in which they adopt the secondary innovation mode and increase technological learning by network embeddedness.The second context is that Chinese firms are building their own network,in which they adopt post-secondary innovation mode and increase innovation performance by strategic assets acquisition,learning and control mechanisms based on ODI.It's concluded that a path from secondary innovation to post-secondary innovation should be implemented by Chinese firms.

Abstract:Latecomer firms from emerging economies such as China are catching up quickly in recent years, and there is a burgeoning body of literature discussing which capabilities are required for these firms to compete in the global market. In this paper, we maintain that in order to catch up in the fast-changing high-technology industries, a deeper understanding is needed about whether and how the firms’ recombinant capabilities – the ability to alter the technological repertoire by recombining existing knowledge elements – can affect the technological catch-up process under the context of open innovation. Using a sample of publicly listed companies in the Chinese telecommunication industry from 2009 to 2015, our results suggest that both the ability of recombinant reuse and recombinant creation represent an opportunity for firms in the emerging economies to catch up; meanwhile, the technological returns from recombinant reuse are enhanced with a higher degree of R&D collaboration. This paper contributes to the literature of catch-up in high-technology industries by examining the dynamic capabilities required for competition in the open innovation context.

Abstract:Prior research on catch-up strategies often provides insights from the technology-related perspective and ignores some non-technological factors. Through the multi-case study of China’s smartphone industry, we develop a theoretical framework explaining how latecomer firms catch up through diverse strategic choices. We identify two strategic paths that latecomer firms follow to catch up and surpass the incumbents. One path is to explore new business opportunities via deep market insights and then combine them with building up product technologies. Another path is from product technology build-up to market insights exploration. Firms following this path usually start with building up essential technologies and act as fast followers for new market insights. Then, as they continue developing their technological strengths, these firms devote efforts to improving their ability to capture new market insights. This study challenges the ‘first imitation, then innovation model’ discussed in the literature and shows that latecomer firms can pursue cutting-edge innovations in their early activities. The research also shows that, unlike previous studies, the technology build-up is not the only path to help latecomers catch up and challenge incumbent leaders.

Abstract:A comparative study of the innovation models of Japanese,Korean and Taiwan firms indicates that Korea adopts technology leapfrogging strategy while China's Taiwan applies technology value chain promotion strategy.But both of them depend mostly on overseas markets.However,Japan,in principle,depends on special demand of domestic markets and therefore it subverts the monopoly of European and American firms with the aid of disruptive innovation.On the basis of some new innovation theory and economic development theory,the present paper explores the path of indigenous innovation for Chinese firms from the perspective of international environment and characteristics of the domestic market.The study argues that China should establish a model of indigenous innovation with disruptive innovation as a dominant approach,together with a subsidiary approach of technology leapfrogging.This paper also argues that China should place emphasis on the new creative thinking based on a profound understanding of both Chinese customers' demands and the traditional Chinese cultural value.
Technology Strategy, Technological Context and Technological Catch-Up in Emerging Economies: Industry-Level Findings from Chinese Manufacturing

Abstract:Through an industry-level analysis of large- and medium-size Chinese manufacturing enterprises over the period of 1998–2006, we introduced a quantitative method to measure and identify industry-level technology strategy categories. We explored the effects of technology strategy, technological context (technology gap, technology development speed and FDI presence) and their interactions on technological catch-up performance in terms of product-related and knowledge-related performance. Regarding product-related catch-up performance, the empirical results show that when a wide technology gap exists, its influence on performance will be less negative for industries under technology strategies with high reliance on external technology sourcing. Moreover, when technology development speed is high, its potential negative influence on performance will be more significant for industries relying on in-house R&D and those on product innovation. However, the conclusions are quite different for knowledge-related catch-up performance. Finally, the positive contribution of FDI presence is more associated with knowledge-related catch-up performance.

In the era of globalization, these strategies are no longer effective. The new strategy to succeed is innovation-based differentiation, developing core technologies and advanced product offerings that are delivered at a low cost and with excellent customer service. Abstract:Despite growing interest in emerging Chinese multinational corporations (MNCs), most previous studies have focused on the strategic content and end results of their internationalization strategies. There has been little or no research on the process by which some Chinese companies are beginning to build integrated global strategies. The purpose of this contribution is to identify issues with regard to the benefits, difficulties, the learning process and the adaptation associated with companies arriving much later than their well-established competitors in the context of the global television manufacturing industry. This research adopts a qualitative approach to examine the way that the Chinese company, TCL, has attempted to build a global strategy behind such rivals as Samsung and Panasonic over a period of 10 years. The findings show that a catch-up company may struggle to obtain the benefits of an integrated global strategy and may face greater difficulties than the existing players, particularly in learning to adjust to the company's new strategic direction. However, latecomers experience shorter learning processes than their well-established rivals, facilitated by advances in technology and by a better understanding of the globalization process. The evidence suggests that the development of existing resources, the learning of new skills and innovation by such companies will be important in the game of catch-up.

Abstract:After almost twenty years of internationalization, Chinese firms have demonstrated their ability to benefit from both international linkages and indigenous efforts in product and process innovation. However, how Chinese firm innovation is facilitated at the international and domestic levels remains to be understood. This article provides an overview of our special issue, exploring this important topic of global networks and innovation in China. Through five empirical studies employing a variety of research methods (e.g., case study, secondary data, survey, and fuzzy-set analysis), we present some recent research on balancing and manipulating internal and external networks to enhance Chinese firm innovation. These selected articles contribute to the field of networks and innovation in China. We hope these articles play a role in encouraging further research on this important and interesting field.

Abstract:This paper introduces the evolutionary process of technological innovation and technology management in Chinese enterprises since 1949. First, the transition of corporate management and technology management in China is introduced in comparison to Western-style management. Then, based on the historical description and case studies, the typical technology development process, especially the processes of technological acquisition, learning and secondary innovation in Chinese enterprises, is analyzed. The integration between technology acquisition and in-house design and R&D is emphasized. The authors suggest that "assimilation and self-design upon imported technology" (3-I policy) is the suitable and vital technology development avenue for most Chinese firms. To accomplish such a technological avenue, coordination, which exists between product innovation and process innovation, corporate strategy and technology strategy, and technology evolution and organizational change must be organized well and dynamically. As Chinese firms face more severe competition than ever, more attention should be paid to the development of indigenous capabilities for technological innovation. The firms' innovation system (FIS), which emphasizes the infrastructure support for a firms entrepreneurship, R&D system, and organization, as well as high-talent personnel, should be established or improved. Thus, technology strategy and the technological innovation system are currently the two key issues of management of technology (MOT) in China and will continue to be into the coming century.

Abstract:Chinese companies have been more successful in catching up with and sometimes surpassing, their global competitors in some industries but not all of them. This holds true for markets in China and international markets. In this article, we show how both the demand and the supply sides of an industry explain these differences, in terms of the existence of market and capability ladders that can help a new competitor climb from the low end, though the middle, and to the top. We then propose several alternative strategies that multinational companies can follow to respond to growing Chinese competition and recommend strategies with the most potential for a particular market and industry.

Abstract:Over the past century and a half, global technological leadership has shifted from Europe to the United States, while scholars argue that the world has seen that it is now shifting from the United States to China due to China's extraordinary catch-up in the past four decades, in which the public policy-oriented national innovation system development plays a critical role that might provide an alternative way for innovation-driven development especially for emerging markets. Even though encountering many challenges ahead, China is positioning itself to take over the global innovation leadership in the next few decades. Here in this article, we introduce a serious yet underexplored question: could China go beyond catch-up and become the global innovation powerhouse? Specifically, drawing from the holistic innovation perspective, which is an original theoretical paradigm for the mission-oriented innovation policy change, this article critically reviews, both qualitatively and quantitatively, China's remarkable innovation progress and main drivers in comparison with G7 countries plus South Korea and India, trying to provide a comprehensive and critical view of state-of-the-art research on China's innovation catch-up. We further explore the five major challenges that China must take seriously when marching toward the global innovation powerhouse. Finally, we propose a mission-oriented holistic STI policy design framework for both China and other emerging economies to go beyond catch-up in a competitive dynamic world. This article provides a new and holistic perspective to access China's innovation progress and challenges, also generates novel insights for scholars and public agencies to contribute to global innovation development, with a shared goal of achieving global sustainable development in the post-COVID-19 pandemic world.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThe influence of technological learning on industry-level catch-up has long drawn substantial attention in the catch-up research field. However, the underlying mechanisms of technological learning and the unique catch-up context in large emerging economies are much less explored. To explain the technological learning processes of latecomers that face the technology gap and strive to build differentiated competitive advantage, this study builds on the absorptive capacity perspective and deconstructs technological learning processes into two mechanisms: technology decomposition and technology recombination. The former entails decomposing advanced technologies into pieces, parts, or modules, while the latter entails the process of capturing market opportunities through recombining knowledge from diverse sources into commercial products through localized innovations and adaptations. Then, we propose a unique ‘ladder-like’ catch-up context (i.e., technology ladder and market ladder) and investigate how the technological learning process and the unique catch-up context jointly affect industrial catch-up performance in China. Using seven-year panel data from Chinese manufacturing industries, the results indicate that only technology recombination has a significantly positive relationship with industrial catch-up performance. In addition, the market ladder strengthens the positive impact of technology recombination on industrial catch-up, while the technology ladder weakens the positive impact of technology decomposition on catch-up.

Abstract:Indigenous firms in developing countries with large domestic markets like China have unique advantages:on the supply side,there are multiple knowledge and technology sources arising from the coexistence of multinational firms and state-owned firms with technologies at the medium-high level and many private firms with technologies at the low level;on the demand side,there are multiple market segments of large size from high-end to low-end.Given the significance of these two industry characteristics for catch-up,technology ladder and market ladder are proposed respectively to reflect the continuity in technology levels and price levels on the whole for firms in an industry.Using panel data analysis for a sample of Chinese manufacturing industries from 2001 to 2007,this study examines how industry structural characteristics (technology ladder and market ladder) and their interactions with technology effort (buy and make) affect productivity catch-up performance.The results indicate that market ladder and technology ladder can accelerate productivity catch-up,and these positive effects are strongest when technology effort intensity in an industry is at a medium level.

Abstract:An indisputable fact in Global Value Chains (GVCs) is the rapid catching-up of China with U.S.A.; however, the convergence speed and depth have yet remained to be explored. On the one hand, the heterogeneity of different business functional activities, i.e. management, R&D, marketing and fabrication, is barely discussed. On the other hand, the international income transfers further complicate catching-up issue, since wedge between value-added and national income exists. Taking account of both them in a global multi-country input-output setting enables us to better understand the speed and depth of catching-up for China vis-à-vis U.S.A. China has made progress on narrowing the gap, albeit slowing down in the mid-2010s, but far from complete. This convergence speed is unevenly proceeded across business functions/industries. Similar catching-up finding holds for our new national income approach, but to a lesser extent. GVC participation scale enlarging and productivity improvement jointly lead to this catching-up, wherein scale contributes more than does productivity. We also find that the scale role is quite heterogeneous across business functions and industries. Despite catching-up in productivity at all levels, but starting from an extremely low level, a major lagging productivity gap remains. Also, the increasingly important role of productivity is observed.

Abstract:This study analyses the industrial catch-up in four sectors in China. The technological regime of sectors affects the chance for latecomers to catch up, but the final outcomes also depend on the actions of governments and firms. A successful catch-up requires the growth of indigenous firms rather than dependence on foreign direct investment. The government has an important role, but different forms of intervention across sectors must be identified. For firms, adopting a path-following strategy does not bring ultimate success, whereas leapfrogging is often required. Any uniqueness in the catch-up pattern of China can be attributed to its large size leading to bargaining power in technology transfer. The Chinese markets with several segments also help to nurture indigenous firms.

Abstract:Mainstream technology catching-up studies only focus on how latecomers assimilate the acquired technology from the developed countries in its home countries, paying little attention to their technology innovation activities directly in the developed countries and the interactions between developed and developing countries to overcome first-mover advantages and catching-up with incumbents. This study examines the practices of the rapidly rising Chinese new entrants of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, discovers the mechanism and path of cross-market innovation (CMI), established its structural model based on multiple case analysis, proposed three-stage progressing path and three integration mechanisms, and provides new ideas for latecomers to leverage advantages from innovation systems of both developed and developing countries to achieve the change of technological leadership. These new Chinese EV players in study directly go to the USA to innovate on top of acquiring new technologies in the USA, and leverage both first-mover and follower advantages, quickly becoming leading technologically in the areas of emerging technology innovation. The study suggests that latecomers could utilize CMI as their technology catching-up strategy and achieve technological leadership change in both home and developed countries. The CMI model has been tested through the structural equation model (SEM) through structured questionnaire.

Abstract:The traditional technological paradigm and trajectory theory illustrates the rationale of technological advancement, and implies how latecomer companies can seize the windows of opportunity of catching up and leapfrogging while new technological trajectory emerges. Yet, evidences from emerging markets have shown that industrial entry barriers are widely persist, and sometimes insurmountable for latecomers as they are often restrained by limited resources basis especially technological resource foundations. This study proposes market-based innovation paradigm and trajectories as a complementary approach to the technological dimension of trajectory theories. Illustrative cases of Chinese firms’ industrial entry and development show how latecomers can exploit a market trajectory perspective to continuously create value for the evolutionary consumer preferences, and gain competitiveness. Besides managerial implications for latecomer firms’ innovation and catching-up, this study also contributes to and bridges theories and literature such as trajectory, disruptive innovation, innovation ecosystem and reverse innovation.
