Abstract:The reaction/diffusion kinetics are fundamentally determined by the electronic properties of supported Pd catalysts and further govern the catalytic activity and selectivity in the partial hydrogenation of alkynes. However, how the electronic metal-support interactions and the tradeoff between reaction and diffusion affect the catalytic performance still remain elusive. Here, the optimized catalyst Pd supported on carbon decorated with oxygen-deficient TiO2(Pd/TiO2-V-o@C) features a remarkable enhancement in performance for semihydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol with a TOF 31-fold higher than that of Lindlar catalyst. The improved performance of Pd/TiO2-V-o@C benefits from the fact that TiO2-V-o@C subtly modulates the electronic properties of Pd, and an appropriate amount of TiO2-V-o allows a decrease in the reaction barrier and C promotes the diffusion ability of the catalyst, achieving the balance between reaction and diffusion. By using microkinetic modeling, the reactivity difference of various catalysts is quantitatively predicted and the calculated turnover frequency volcano curve is rationalized as a function of reaction barrier and diffusion ability, which agrees well with the experimental results. The quantitative regulation of catalytic performance by tuning the support properties is a general strategy, which provides a basis to design robust catalysts for diverse reactions.

Abstract:Efficient low‐temperature hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin derivatives to produce biofuels and high value‐added chemicals is still of challenge. Here, we have constructed a high active and stable 0.2 wt.% Pd/MS‐HZSM‐5(30) catalyst, and 94.7% yield of 2‐methoxy‐4‐methylphenol (MMP) can be achieved in HDO of vanillin (VAN, a typical platform molecule of lignin derivatives) under milder reaction conditions (60 °C, 5 h, molar ratio of VAN/Pd = 1200, water phase), outperforming the most works reported recently. Detailed experimental and mechanistic studies demonstrated that the superior catalytic performance was due to the rapid hydrogenolysis of generated intermediate (vanillyl alcohol, VAL) to MMP proceeded in an interfacial microenvironmental created by Pd NPs and acidic sites in Pd/MS‐HZSM‐5(30). These new insights will provide potential guidance for the efficient low‐temperature production of biofuels and valuable chemicals from lignin derivatives or raw lignin.

Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:The sulfated vanadia-zirconia SO42-/V2O5-ZrO2 catalyst, prepared by an impregnation method and calcined at various temperatures, was found to have a high catalytic activity for methanol oxidation to dimethoxymethane in a fixed bed reactor and a batch autoclave using O-2 as the oxidant due to the crystalline V2O5 dispersed on the surface as redox active sites, as well as stronger acidic sites.

Abstract:The selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of sustainable lignocellulosic biomass plays a pivotal role in the conversion of biomass into high-value fuels and chemicals. Nevertheless, HDO for biomass upgrading always demands high temperatures and high hydrogen (H2) pressure. Photothermal catalysis has been recognized as an effective approach for boosting chemical reactions under mild conditions while maintaining superior selectivity. Herein, we report the design of palladium-decorated defective tungsten oxide (Pd/WO3-x) catalysts with enhanced photothermal catalytic performances for the efficient HDO of vanillin. Pd/WO3-x nanoflowers have been synthesized through a solvothermal/in-situ reduction two-step strategy, and they exhibit notable photoabsorption in a wide range (200-1100 nm), high photothermal conversion and efficient charge separation efficiency. Under simulated sunlight irradiation (0.3 W cm-2), Pd/WO3-x exhibits a maximum vanillin conversion up to 86.8 % with a 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) selectivity of 100 %, which is obviously higher than that (vanillin conversion = 33.1 %, MMP selectivity = 100 %) in the oil bath at the same temperature. Such higher conversion efficiency and selectivity under sunlight should result from the synergistic integration of hot electrons and photothermal heating, both of which are derived from localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in WO3-x. Importantly, Pd/WO3-x catalyst demonstrates good stability and high selectivity to MMP even after 5 cycles. This work may offer a novel viewpoint on the advancement of photothermal catalysts and the realization of photothermal catalytic biomass conversion under mild conditions.

Abstract:Selective hydrodeoxygenation of biomass and its derivatives to produce chemicals and biofuels is an effective upgrading strategy to achieve global sustainable development goals. Through the development and utilization of renewable resources, sustainable consumption and production patterns can be promoted and climate change and its impacts can be addressed. Herein, selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vanillin was conducted by utilizing a Pd/α-MoC catalyst modified with solvent water. The water modification induced the formation of a thin layer of molybdenum oxide on the Pd/α-MoC catalyst surface, which significantly promotes the selective hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin. The conversion of vanillin over the modified Pd/α-MoC catalyst reached 99.9 %, while the selectivity to 4-methyl-2-methoxyphenol (MMP) reached 99.9 % at 0.3 MPa H 2 and 80 °C. Comprehensive characterizations elucidate that the heterogeneous layer on the surface of the modified catalyst significantly increases the acidity of the catalyst and improves the removal efficiency of hydroxyl groups, thus improving the high selectivity to the desired product. Moreover, the side reactions are inhibited due to the using of water as the solvent, which contributes a high carbon balance. The modified Pd/α-MoC catalyst exhibits efficient hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin under mild conditions, which suggests an avenue for chemical transformations of biomass derivatives into high value chemicals.

Abstract:To make pyrolytic bio‐oil useful as a transportation fuel, the oxygen content must be reduced, and this can be carried out by using catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction. The greatest challenge is associated with the removal of strongly bound oxygenated groups without saturating the aromatic ring while preserving the number of carbons. However, the development of a stable catalyst that can selectively remove such oxygenated groups with low hydrogen consumption is still challenging. In this context, a systematic study on HDO of vanillin on bimetallic Pd‐Pt catalysts was carried out. It aims to study the effect of bimetallic synergy in terms of activity and selectivity to creosol. Metallic nanoparticles of Pd and Pt were synthesized by sol immobilization technique and deposited on TiO2. The conversion of vanillin was correlated to the Pd‐Pt atomic ratio, while the production of the creosol was correlated to the Pd(0)/(Pd+Pt) ratio at the surface. Full conversion of vanillin was obtained at low reaction temperature (20 °C) achieving nearly 100% selectivity to creosol. These results represent a step forward in advancing the development of more efficient and sustainable processes for bio‐oil upgrading.

Abstract:Mesoporous zirconium oxides (ZrO 2 ) and cobalt oxides (Co x O y ) were prepared by different methods, using vanillin (VAN) as a model compound to explore the catalytic performance of catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction. Various characterization methods were used to test the catalysts' morphology, structure, and chemical composition. Under the optimal conditions, the study found that the yield of catalyzing the HDO of VAN to 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) is 99%, with ZrO 2 prepared by the precipitation method as the catalyst, isopropanol as the solvent, hydrogen pressure of 5 MPa, reaction time of 24 h, and reaction temperature of 180 °C. A high methylcyclohexanol (MCYL) yield of 99% was obtained for the HDO of VAN, with Co x O y prepared by the precipitation method as the catalyst, isopropanol as the solvent, hydrogen pressure of 4 MPa, reaction time of 24 h, and reaction temperature of 170 °C.

Abstract:Polar polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol- co -ethylene) (EVOH) serve as excellent oxygen barriers in multilayered polymer films. However, their presence creates significant challenges for subsequent recycling. Melting and thermal degradation leave behind small domains of immiscible phases that render the final material less valuable. Here, we report a strategy to selectively remove OH groups from the EVOH polymer while preserving the polymer's hydrocarbon backbone. Pd supported on TiO 2 nanotubes exhibits excellent activity and selectivity for C–O bond scission and hydrogenation. This is evidenced in our study, which utilizes both the model compound 2,5-hexanediol (a small surrogate for polyols) and EVOH. The Lewis-acid sites generated on the TiO 2 surface, coupled with hydrogen dissociation on the metal particles and unique sites at the metal support interface, result in enhanced deoxygenation rates to generate saturated products at atmospheric pressure. The intimacy between Pd particles and their TiO 2 supports for EVOH conversion is also discussed.

Abstract:Chemoselective hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin is of great importance in converting biomass into high value-added chemicals. Herein, we describe a facile photochemical route to access palladium single atoms and clusters supported on silicoaluminophosphate-31 (SAPO-31) as a highly active, chemoselective, and reusable catalyst for hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin. Characterizations by aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, extended X-ray absorption fine structure measurement, and CO-absorbed diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy reveal the atomically dispersed palladium single atoms and clusters are loosely bonded and randomly dispersed, without forming strong palladium-palladium metallic bonding, over the SAPO-31 support. This catalyst, with a full metal availability to the reactants, exhibits exceptional catalytic activity (TOF: 3,000 h−1, Yield: > 99%) in the hydrodeoxygenation of vanillin toward 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) under mild conditions (1 atm, 80 °C, 30 min), along with excellent stability, scalability (up to 100-fold), and wide substrate scope. The superior catalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of the positively charged palladium single atoms and fully exposed clusters, as well as the strong metal-support interactions. This work may offer a new avenue for the design and synthesis of fully exposed metal catalysts with targeted functionalities.

Abstract:Vanadium oxide nanobelts were synthesized using a sonochemical-hydrothermal method. Hexadecylphosphonic acid (HDPA) was introduced onto the surfaces of the nanobelts and bulk vanadium oxide to tune their catalytic properties; these properties were tested using gas-phase oxidation of toluene. The catalytic activity of the vanadium oxide nanobelts was higher than that of the bulk oxide as a result of the higher lattice oxygen activity of the nanobelts. Doping with HDPA, tuning the lattice oxygen activity, and blocking unselective sites led to both higher activity and selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on nanobelt-like vanadium oxides, whereas led to lower activity but higher selectivities for benzaldehyde and benzoic acid on bulk vanadium oxides.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oils obtained by rapid pyrolysis of biomass into high value-added chemicals generally required harsh conditions. Herein, three kinds of mixed-phase ZrO 2 supports (denoted as ZSX, X = 2–4) with different crystal structure proportions were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal synthesis method, and their performance on the properties of Pd/ZrO 2 catalysts were investigated for vanillin HDO. Pd/ZS3 exhibited excellent efficiency in HDO of vanillin, a typical model compound of lignin, achieving approximately 100% yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) in presence of n-butanol as solvent and polymethyl hydrogen siloxane (PMHS) as hydrogen donor under mild conditions (35 °C, 1 h). It was due to catalytic synergy of exposed metal active sites, oxygen vacancies (O v ) and acid sites to occur electron transfer and enhance interaction between Pd and ZrO 2 . By tuning the crystal structure of ZrO 2 support, the influence of O v and acid sites of Pd/ZrO 2 over vanillin HDO performance was investigated, Pd/ZS2 with abundant O v and Pd/ZS4 with substantial acid sites promoted hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis, respectively, Pd/ZS3 possessed preferable conversion and selectivity as having the properties of both at once. Additionally, reaction pathway was also proposed in which vanillin was converted to MMP by combining intermediate of 4-hydroxy-methyl-2-methoxyphenol (HMP) with active hydrogen species while removing water. This developed catalysts with different crystalline highlighted an enormous promise for HDO of bio-oils into green fuel under mild conditions.

Abstract:A highly attractive aim is to turn CO2 into useful chemicals selectively and efficiently, but it still retains great challenging to understand the relations between catalytic performances and interface properties. Here, we report an alternative solution to relate the catalytic activity with the strengths of Lewis acids and bases on the Pd-CoOx interfaces. CoO∙TiO2/TiO2 and CoOx/TiO2 possess the wide spectrum of Lewis acid/base centres, and give the low selectivity and conversion. The introduction of Pd can focus them on the intrinsic centres, and makes Pd-CoO∙TiO2/TiO2 and Pd-CoOx/TiO2 represent the ideal catalysis. With temperature-programmed desorptions of CO2, CO and NH3, it is evidenced that the catalytic hydrogenations of CO2 to CO, CH4 and CH3OH depend on the cooperation of the Lewis acidic/alkaline centres on the interfaces. The studies provide guidelines for rational design and synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts including but not limited to CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract:Abstract As a promising hydrogen carrier, formic acid (HCOOH) is renewable, safe and nontoxic. Although noble-metal-based catalysts have exhibited excellent activity in HCOOH dehydrogenation, developing non-noble-metal heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency remains a great challenge. Here, we modulate oxygen coverage on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes to boost the catalytic activity toward HCOOH dehydrogenation. Impressively, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes after treating with air at 250 °C (Ti 3 C 2 T x -250) significantly increase the amount of surface oxygen atoms without the change of crystalline structure, exhibiting a mass activity of 365 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 100% of selectivity for H 2 at 80 °C, which is 2.2 and 2.0 times that of commercial Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively. Further mechanistic studies demonstrate that HCOO* is the intermediate in HCOOH dehydrogenation over Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with different coverages of surface oxygen atoms. Increasing the oxygen coverage on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes not only promotes the conversion from HCOO* to CO 2 * by lowering the energy barrier, but also weakens the adsorption energy of CO 2 and H 2 , thus accelerating the dehydrogenation of HCOOH.

Abstract:Construction of efficient interfaces to improve the performance of supported metal catalysts is a challenging but effective technique. A newly synthesized catalyst with layered cobalt oxide on the surface of titania (layer-CoOx /TiO2 ) is highly selective towards the aerobic oxidation of C-H bonds in a series of hydrocarbons under sustainable conditions. The layer-CoOx /TiO2 easily outperforms the state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts and homogeneous cobalt salts used in industry. In-depth structural and functional characterization reveal that the layer-CoOx /TiO2 readily reacts with O2 for the adsorption and activation of C-H bonds. The layered structure of CoOx can maximize the interfacial effect of CoOx /TiO2 leading to a good performance for the oxidation of C-H bonds.

Abstract:The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of biomass-derived compounds into high-quality fuels and chemicals is an effective solution to the fossil energy shortage. However, the development and design of catalysts with high-performance HDO under mild reaction conditions is a significant challenge. In this paper, the defect-rich ZrO2 anchored Pd nanoparticles was investigated for selective HDO of bio-models at room temperature. The oxygen vacancies of Pd/ZrO2(x) catalysts can be regulated by the addition of template agent cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), in which CTAB combines with OH on the support to form complex oxides and then promoting the formation of Zr3+-Ov-Zr4+ structure of the as-prepared Pd/ZrO2(x) catalysts. When the mass ratio of CTAB/ZrOSO4 is 0.5, the Pd/ZrO2(0.5) catalyst with the highest oxygen defect content exhibits excellent performance towards 99.9% yield of 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol (MMP) at 25 °C for one hour in vanillin HDO. The rich oxygen vacancies of Pd/ZrO2(x) catalysts can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst surface metal palladium and zirconium, and promote the adsorption and hydrogenolysis of C-O in vanillin HDO. In addition, it is obviously that the catalysts had excellent versatility and stability, and the MMP selectivity of the Pd-ZrO2(0.5) catalyst slightly decreased after five consecutive reactions.

Abstract:As a promising hydrogen carrier, formic acid (HCOOH) is renewable, safe and nontoxic. Although noble-metal-based catalysts have exhibited excellent activity in HCOOH dehydrogenation, developing non-noble-metal heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency remains a great challenge. Here, we modulate oxygen coverage on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes to boost the catalytic activity toward HCOOH dehydrogenation. Impressively, Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes after treating with air at 250 °C (Ti 3 C 2 T x -250) significantly increase the amount of surface oxygen atoms without the change of crystalline structure, exhibiting a mass activity of 365 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 100% of selectivity for H 2 at 80 °C, which is 2.2 and 2.0 times that of commercial Pd/C and Pt/C, respectively. Further mechanistic studies demonstrate that HCOO* is the intermediate in HCOOH dehydrogenation over Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes with different coverages of surface oxygen atoms. Increasing the oxygen coverage on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x MXenes not only promotes the conversion from HCOO* to CO 2 * by lowering the energy barrier, but also weakens the adsorption energy of CO 2 and H 2 , thus accelerating the dehydrogenation of HCOOH.
Crystal-Plane-Engineered TiO2-Anchored Vanadium Single Atoms and Clusters for Boosting Ultradeep Aerobic Oxidative Desulfurization of Diesel

Abstract:The crystal plane effect has gained extensive attention in heterogeneous catalysis reactions; however, it is far from being systematically probed in titanium dioxide (TiO2)-supported vanadium catalysts. Herein, a series of vanadium (V) single atoms and clusters anchored on TiO2 with different crystal planes was fabricated by an improved "top-down" protocol. The dispersion state, electronic structure, and redox properties of the V single-atom and VOx cluster-supported catalysts were systematically analyzed by a series of characterization methods, including X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and their catalytic performances were examined for aerobic oxidative desulfurization (AODS) of 4,6-dimethyl-dibenzothiophen (4,6-DMDBT) with O2 as the oxidant. The results unveiled that the synergistic effect between the V single atom and the VOx cluster perceptibly promoted the catalytic performances of VOx/TiO2 samples. Therein, VOx/TiO2-(001) shows the lowest apparent activation energy (Ea) value of 46.3 kJ/mol and the optimal AODS performance with complete 4,6-DMDBT conversion to 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene sulfone (4,6-DMDBTO2) within 60 min at 120 °C as compared with VOx/TiO2-(101) (81.9 kJ/mol and 180 min) and VOx/TiO2-(100) (68.0 kJ/mol and 240 min), which should be attributed to its higher V5+/V4+ ratio, the optimal redox behavior of the V species, the moderate adsorption energy between 4,6-DMDBT and VOx active centers, and the synthetic effect of V single atoms and VOx clusters. Moreover, VOx/TiO2-(001) exhibits robust durability in seven cycles of reuse, showcasing the potential for practical applications in the future.
Nature of Crystal Facet Effect of TiO2 Supported Pd/Pt Catalysts on Selective Hydrogenation of Cinnamaldehyde: Electron Transfer Process Promoted by Interfacial Oxygen Species

Abstract:Supported noble metal nanocatalysts typically exhibit strong crystal plane dependent catalytic behavior, but their working mechanism is still unclear. Herein, using anatase TiO2 with well-exposed crystal facets of {101}, {100} and {001} as a prototype support, Pd and Pt based supported TiO2 nanocatalysts (TiO2-Pd and TiO2-Pt) were prepared by chemical reduction with NaBH4 as reducer, and they showed a distinct metal-dependent crystal facet effect in the selective hydrogenation of cinamaldehyde (CAL). For the Pd based nanocatalysts, the most of Pd species on the {100} plane of TiO2, are present in the oxidized form with the positive charges, and unexpectedly shows the higher reactivity than Pd species in zero valence state on the {101} and {001} planes. While, the Pt species on all the three crystal planes of TiO2 shows zero valence state, with relative low conversion, but a much better selectivity on the hydrogenation of C=O bond, compared to Pd-based catalysts. Well-designed experiments through manipulating the stability and type of the surface oxygen species confirmed that the essence of the crystal facet effect of the catalyst support actually creates a unique nanoconfined interface at the molecular level to construct surface p band intermediate state (PBIS), which provides a new alternative channel for surface electron transfer and consequently accelerates the reaction kinetics.
