Abstract:Imaging is of great importance in everyday life and various fields of science and technology. Conventional imaging is achieved by bending light rays originating from an object with a lens. Such ray bending requires space-variant structures, inevitably introducing a geometric center to the lens. To overcome the limitations arising from the conventional imaging mechanism, we consider imaging elements that employ a different mechanism, which we call reciprocal lenses. This type of imaging element relies on ray shifting, enabled by momentum-space-variant phase modulations in periodic structures. As such, it has the distinct advantage of not requiring alignment with a geometric center. Moreover, upright real images can be produced directly with a single reciprocal lens as the directions of rays are not changed. We realized an ultra-thin reciprocal lens based on a photonic crystal slab. We characterized the ray shifting behavior of the reciprocal lens and demonstrated imaging. Our work gives an alternative mechanism for imaging, and provides a new way to modulate electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:A stable optical system is required to acquire a high-quality image. A motionless lensless setup is designated to obtain high-resolution and large field of view images. The sample is sequentially illuminated with multiple random phase patterns, and the recorded images are subtracted from the system calibration images correspondingly. The resultant images are propagated to the sample plane. The summation of all images yields a final image with resolution of ∼4 μm, field of view of ∼15 mm2, and better signal-to-noise ratio. This technique provides a compact, stable, and cost-effective optical system.

Abstract:High-performance image-forming systems often require high system complexity due to the overdetermined nature of optical aberration correction. What we present here is a novel computational imaging modality which can achieve high-performance imaging using a simple non-image-forming optical system. The presented optical system contains an aspherical non-imaging lens which is designed with the optimal transfer of light radiation between an object and a detector. All spatial frequencies of the object collected by the non-imaging lens are delivered to the detector. No image is formed on the detector, and a full-path optical diffraction calculation method is developed to recover a high-quality image of the object from multiple intensity measurements. The effectiveness and high performance of the proposed imaging modality is verified by the examples.

Abstract:The demand for low-cost, high-performance miniaturized optical imaging systems requires creating a new imaging paradigm. In this paper, we propose an imaging paradigm that achieves diffraction-limited imaging with a non-imaging spatial information transfer lens. The spatial information transfer lens realizes a perfect match between the space-bandwidth product (SBP) of the lens and that of the image sensor so that the collected spatial information from the object can be totally recorded and fully resolved by the image sensor. A backward wave propagation model is developed to reconstruct the object by propagating the light wave modulated by the information transfer lens back from the image space to object space. The proposed imaging paradigm breaks the point-to-point imaging structure and removes the focusing-distance constraint, allowing a flexible arrangement of the object and the image sensor along the optical axis with a compact form factor of the optical system. We experimentally demonstrate the versatility and effectiveness of the proposed imaging paradigm. The proposed imaging paradigm is low-cost, simple in configuration, flexible in arrangement, and diffraction limited with great potential applications in biomedical imaging. Abstract:This paper proposed a diffractive imaging technology called rotary astigmatic diffractive imaging (RADI). The system uses a rotatable cylindrical lens for rotary astigmatic modulation and a camera for collecting the diffractive patterns distorted in different angles. Then a field can be reconstructed with the patterns by an iterative algorithm. Compared with the original astigmatic diffractive imaging system, our simulations show RADI system has the greater performance of convergence with the same number of constrained patterns. In addition, it is easy for RADI to increase the number of diffraction measurements to accelerate the convergence further. Considering the center of the cylindrical lens does not coincide with the center of rotation, a calibration method is proposed. An optical vortex of charge two is reconstructed experimentally demonstrating the system can solve the problem of unique phase recovery. Besides, the reconstructions of a USAF resolution chart with different numbers of constrained patterns shows the rate of convergence increases obviously with the increase of the number of diffraction measurements. The reconstruction shows the resolution of our system is about 14.25 lp/mm, which is 60% of the diffraction limited resolution. Our RADI can provide a high-performance way but with simple setup to realize field reconstruction.

Abstract:A bionic variable-focus lens with symmetrical layered structure was designed to mimic the crystalline lens. An optical imaging system based on this lens and with a symmetrical structure that mimics the human eye structure was proposed. The refractive index of the bionic variable-focus lens increases from outside to inside. The two PDMS lenses with a certain thickness were designed to improve the optical performance of the optical imaging system and minimise the gravity effect of liquid. The paper presents the overall structure of the optical imaging system and the detailed description of the bionic variable-focus lens. By pumping liquid in or out of the cavity, the surface curvatures of the rear PDMS lens were varied, resulting in a change in the focal length. The focal length range of the optical imaging system was 20.71–24.87mm. The optical performance of the optical imaging system was evaluated by imaging experiments and analysed by ray tracing simulations. On the basis of test and simulation results, the optical performance of the system was quite satisfactory. Off-axis aberrations were well corrected, and the image quality was greatly improved.

Abstract:The entire process of image formation and refocusing of light field photography with microlens array is simulated using the in-house software OTS based on real ray tracing. The optical system consists of a photographic lens and the microlens array which are specifically designed. Objects are placed in different distance before the lens, and images of them on the detector plane are got by imaging simulation algorithm. Utilizing the color, intensity and the corresponding direction information of light rays on the image plane, pictures focusing at different depth in the image space are calculated, so that we can refocus at different objects in different distance. The paper also details the basic requirement of optical system and this simulation process is a fundamental work of research on design method and performance of lens using in light field photography.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate subwavelength imaging by a "flat cylindrical" lens using negative refraction. A two-dimensional photonic crystal whose dispersion at the second band provides group velocity opposite to the phase velocity for electromagnetic waves is employed to realize the flat lens, and the working frequency is chosen so that the effective refractive index is approximately equal to -1.0. Experiment demonstrated the imaging of a point source in both amplitude and phase in the millimeter-wave regime. By measuring the field distributions in the object plane and image plane, we observed amplification of evanescent waves and subwavelength size image. The image of two incoherent sources with subwavelength distance showed two resolvable spots, which served to further verify subwavelength resolution.

Abstract:Lensless imaging is an innovative and swiftly advancing technology at the intersection of optics, imaging technology, and computational science. It captures scene by directly recording the interference or diffraction patterns of light, subsequently utilizing algorithms to reconstruct the original image from these patterns. Lensless imaging upends traditional imaging paradigms, offering newfound design flexibility and the capacity to seamlessly integrate within diverse imaging ecosystems. This paper aims to provide an overview of significant developments in optical modulation elements, image sensors, and reconstruction algorithms. The novel application scenarios that benefit from lensless computational imaging are presented. The opportunities and challenges associated with lensless camera are discussed for further improving its performance.

Abstract:Abstract Ultrathin flat optics allow control of light at the subwavelength scale that is unmatched by traditional refractive optics. To approach the atomically thin limit, the use of 2D materials is an attractive possibility due to their high refractive indices. However, achievement of diffraction-limited focusing and imaging is challenged by their thickness-limited spatial resolution and focusing efficiency. Here we report a universal method to transform 2D monolayers into ultrathin flat lenses. Femtosecond laser direct writing was applied to generate local scattering media inside a monolayer, which overcomes the longstanding challenge of obtaining sufficient phase or amplitude modulation in atomically thin 2D materials. We achieved highly efficient 3D focusing with subwavelength resolution and diffraction-limited imaging. The high focusing performance even allows diffraction-limited imaging at different focal positions with varying magnifications. Our work paves the way for downscaling of optical devices using 2D materials and reports an unprecedented approach for fabricating ultrathin imaging devices.

Abstract:Lensless imaging is a popular research field for the advantages of small size, wide field-of-view and low aberration in recent years. However, some traditional lensless imaging methods suffer from slow convergence, mechanical errors and conjugate solution interference, which limit its further application and development. In this work, we proposed a lensless imaging method based on spatial light modulator (SLM) with unknown modulation curve. In our imaging system, we use SLM to modulate the wavefront of object, and introduce the ptychographic scanning algorithm that is able to recover the complex amplitude information even the SLM modulation curve is inaccurate or unknown. In addition, we also design a split-beam interference experiment to calibrate the modulation curve of SLM, and using the calibrated modulation function as the initial value of the expended ptychography iterative engine (ePIE) algorithm can improve the convergence speed. We further analyze the effect of modulation function, algorithm parameters and the characteristics of the coherent light source on the quality of reconstructed image. The simulated and real experiments show that the proposed method is superior to traditional mechanical scanning methods in terms of recovering speed and accuracy, with the recovering resolution up to 14 um.

Abstract:An outstanding challenge for micro -optical systems is to achieve high resolution under wide -field -ofview (FOV) imaging. We propose a compact solution for high -resolution imaging under a wide-FOV with wavelength -scale thickness achromatic microlens arrays. Our strategy involves using aspherical sublenses to reduce spherical and chromatic aberration, as well as using small -diameter achromatic microlenses to decrease incident ray height. With the aid of computational reconstruction, the array of microlenses can achieve a wide-FOV comparable to that of commercially available lenses with equivalent large diameters. The microlens array shows a significant advantage in imaging resolution and an order smaller thickness compared to commercial lenses. This highly integrated microlens array, characterizing high -resolution imaging under a wide-FOV, will play an important role in applications such as autonomous driving, endoscopy, virtual reality, and augmented reality.

Abstract:Lensless imaging eliminates the need for geometric isomorphism between a scene and an image while allowing the construction of compact, lightweight imaging systems. However, a challenging inverse problem remains due to the low reconstructed signal-to-noise ratio. Current implementations require multiple masks or multiple shots to denoise the reconstruction. We propose single-shot lensless imaging with a Fresnel zone aperture and incoherent illumination. By using the Fresnel zone aperture to encode the incoherent rays in wavefront-like form, the captured pattern has the same form as the inline hologram. Since conventional backpropagation reconstruction is troubled by the twin-image problem, we show that the compressive sensing algorithm is effective in removing this twin-image artifact due to the sparsity in natural scenes. The reconstruction with a significantly improved signal-to-noise ratio from a single-shot image promotes a camera architecture that is flat and reliable in its structure and free of the need for strict calibration.

Abstract:Lensless imaging is a technique that records diffraction patterns without using lenses and recovers the complex field of object via phase retrieval. Robust lensless phase retrieval process usually requires multiple measurements with defocus variation, transverse translation or angle-varied illumination. However, making such diverse measurements is time-consuming and limits the application of lensless setup for dynamic samples. In this paper, we propose a single-shot lensless imaging scheme via simultaneous multi-angle LED illumination. Diffraction patterns under multi-angle lights are recorded by different areas of the sensor within a single shot. An optimization algorithm is applied to utilize the single-shot measurement and retrieve the aliasing information for reconstruction. We first use numerical simulations to evaluate the proposed scheme quantitatively by comparisons with the multi-acquisition case. Then a proof-of-concept lensless setup is built to validate the method by imaging a resolution chart and biological samples, achieving ∼ 4.92 μm half-pitch resolution and ∼ 1.202mm2 field of view (FOV). We also discuss different design tradeoffs and present a 4-frame acquisition scheme (with ∼ 3.48 μm half-pitch resolution and ∼ 2.35 × 2.55 mm2 FOV) to show the flexibility of performance enhancement by capturing more measurements.
The anti-reflection lens: Quantitatively far-field imaging beyond the Rayleigh limit

Abstract:This study reports an novel approach to reconstruct quantitatively the electrical parameters of imaged specimen with sub-wavelength resolution. This super-resolution imaging methodology relies on the use of anti-reflection lens with the property of zero (strictly, approximately zero) backward propagation. We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that the anti-reflection lenses can encode the subtle information of imaged specimen into far field, and thus support the quantitative reconstruction of probed objects in the sub-wavelength resolution from far-field measurements merely by solving a well-conditioned linear inverse problem. The proposed approach is not only confined to weakly- but also suitable for generally- scattering cases. The operational principle of constructing the anti-reflection lens that is achievable with current experimental technique is provided as well. This new approach will be a breakthrough in the spatio-temporal control of field (or light) with the potential of being applied in nanolithography, detection, sensing or sub-wavelength imaging in the near future.

Abstract:It is generally assumed that correcting chromatic aberrations in imaging requires optical elements. Here, we show that by allowing the phase in the image plane to be a free parameter, it is possible to correct chromatic variation of focal length over an extremely large bandwidth, from the visible (Vis) to the longwave infrared (LWIR) wavelengths using a single diffractive surface, i.e., a flat lens. Specifically, we designed, fabricated and characterized a flat, multi-level diffractive lens (MDL) with thickness £ 10{\mu}m, diameter ~1mm, and focal length = 18mm, which was constant over the operating bandwidth of l=0.45{\mu}m (blue) to 15{\mu}m (LWIR). We experimentally characterized the point-spread functions, aberrations and imaging performance of cameras comprised of this MDL and appropriate image sensors. We further show using simulations that such extreme achromatic MDLs can be achieved even at high numerical apertures (NA=0.81). By drastically increasing the operating bandwidth and eliminating several refractive lenses, our approach enables thinner, lighter and simpler imaging systems.

Abstract:It is generally thought that correcting chromatic aberrations in imaging requires multiple surfaces. Here, we show that by allowing the phase in the image plane of a flat lens to be a free parameter, it is possible to correct chromatic aberrations over a large continuous bandwidth with a single diffractive surface. We experimentally demonstrate imaging using a single flat lens of diameter > 3mm, focal length = 5mm (NA = 0.3, f/1.59) that is achromatic from 0.45um to 1um. This combination of size, NA and operating bandwidth has not been demonstrated in a flat lens before. We experimentally characterized the point-spread functions, off-axis aberrations and the broadband imaging performance. In contrast to conventional lens design, we utilize inverse design, where phase in the focal plane is treated as a free parameter. This approach attains a phase-only (lossless) pupil function, which can be implemented as a multi-level diffractive flat lens that achieves achromatic focusing and imaging.
