Abstract:High-filled wood-plastic composite (HFWPC) is a new type of composite with great environmental and economic benefits because it contains significant biomass contents and minimizes the use of plastics. However, the defects of poor mechanical properties, high water absorption, poor dry-wet cycle resistance, which greatly limits its long-term use in a high-humidity environment. In this study, an in-situ microfibrillated polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polyblend was prepared using an extrusion hot stretching process, and was used as the shell of the co-extruded high-filled wood-plastic composite (Co-HFWPC). Co-HFWPC exhibited excellent mechanical properties and water stability. The flexural strength and tensile strength increase by 114% and 97%, The Co-HFWPC has an extremely low water absorption (less than 0.6%) and its mechanical property retention rate was more than 90% after 20 dry-wet cycles, and the creep strain of the Co-HFWPC decreased with increasing PET content in the shell layers. This study provides insight into an efficient and low-cost method for large-scale preparation of high-strength, water-resistance and creep-resistance Co-HFWPC and extended their application areas like constructing materials and some extreme circumstances.
