Abstract:PURPOSE: This study was investigate the associations between Session Ratings of Perceived Exertion (SRPE) and 60%1RM and 85%1RM strength training in order to cross-validate the SRPE method for training load (TL) assessment in 1RM discipline among Chinese adolescent track and field athletes. METHODS: We tested 24 Chinese adolescent track and field athletes (20 males & 4 females; M ± SD: Training yr., 3.52 ± 1.91, Age 17.85 ± 1.28 yr., Height = 174.12 ± 7.45 cm, Weight = 65.71 ± 26.91 kg, BMI = 21.55 ± 7.83) performing bench press and leg press with the loadings of 60% 1RM and 85%, respectively. 1RM repetitions and measured SRPE (category ratio scale) at the end of the concentric action for each repetition. RESULTS: There was a high correlation between SRPE and 60% 1RM bench press (r = 0.825, p < 0.001) and leg press (r = 0.825, p < 0.001). Similarly, the high correlation was found for the SRPE for 85% 1RM bench press (r = 0.631, p < 0.001) and leg press (r = 0.804, p < 0.001), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: SRPE’s validity was confirmed for the monitoring method to assess strength training load among the Chinese adolescent track and field athletes.
