Abstract:Complex Fe(bpyB)3 (1, bpyB = 5,5'-bis(dimesitylboranyl)-2,2'-bipyridine) and its reduced species [(18-c-6)K(THF)2]·[Fe(bpyB)3] (2) were synthesized. Their solid state and electronic structures were investigated by single crystal X-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance and UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID measurements. In 1 two bpyB radical anions are fused by a diamagnetic FeII ion, whereas in 2 all three bpyB ligands are in the radical state. Complex 1 possesses an open-shell singlet ground state with a singlet-triplet gap of 0.18 kcal mol-1 and 2 features an open-shell doublet ground state with a doublet-quartet gap of 1.4 kcal mol-1, as determined by SQUID measurements. The unpaired-electrons in 1 and 2 mainly delocalize over the boron atoms and the bipyrdine moieties with negligible spin density at the iron center. Complex 2 represents the first isolable example of boron-based triradicals.
An Isolable Diboron-Centered Diradical with A Triplet Ground State

Abstract:Two new diboranes, 2,6-bis(BMes(2))mesitylene (1) and 3,3-bis(BMes(2))bimesitylene (3), were synthesized. Two-electron reduction of 1 with elemental potassium afforded the C-H activation product [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)2(2-) bearing a BC3 four-membered ring as colorless crystals, whereas the reduction of 3 with potassium led to the isolation of [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)3(2-..) as dark blue crystals. Both reduction products were characterized by structural and spectroscopic methods. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations revealed that the electron spin density of 3(2-..) mainly resides on the two boron nuclei and features a triplet ground state, which was confirmed by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements as well as theoretical calculations. 3(2-..) represents the first structurally characterized boron-centered diradical with a triplet ground state. In addition, the reactivity of [(18-c-6)K(THF)(2)](2)(+)3(2-..) toward PhSeSePh and nBu(3)SnH was investigated, which is consistent with its radical character.

Abstract:A series of cage penta-arylated carboranes have been synthesized by palladium-catalyzed intermolecular coupling of the C-carboxylic acid of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion [CB11H12](-) with iodoarenes by direct cage B-H bond functionalization. These transformations set a record in terms of one-pot directing group-mediated activation of inert bonds in a single molecule. The methodology is characterized by high yields, good functional group tolerance, and complete cage regioselectivity. The directing group COOH can be easily removed during or after the intermolecular coupling reaction. The mechanistic pathways were probed using density functional theory calculations. A Pd(II)-Pd(IV)-Pd(II) catalytic cycle is proposed, in which initial coupling is followed by preferred B-H activation of the adjacent boron vertex, and continuation of this selectivity results in a continuous walking process of the palladium center. The methodology opens a new avenue toward building blocks with 5-fold symmetry.

Abstract:A class of bis(phenothiazine)arene dications were isolated and structurally characterized by using weakly coordinating anions. Their electronic structures were investigated by various experiments in tandem with DFT calculations. They all feature singlet ground states with a considerable diradical character and may be regarded as nearly pure diradicals. Our work demonstrates the important role of orthogonal alignment of spin-carrying pi-systems in tuning the electronic structures of bis(triarylamine) dications.

A rhodium(III)-catalyzed B-H functionalization-cyclization cascade of closo-dodecaborate amides is reported. The transformations occur chemoselectively at B-H positions in the presence of C-H bonds prone to competitive cyclometalation. Previously inaccessible cage derivatives with B-C(sp(2)) and B-C(sp(3)) bonds as well as a fused diboraoxazole ring are obtained in a one-pot process. The reactions proceed under mild conditions and exhibit complete cage regioselectivity with broad functional group tolerance. These cluster derivatives enable a largely extended investigation of the application of anionic boron clusters in research areas such as photoluminescent materials and medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:The regioselective derivatization of the monocarba-closo-dodecaborate anion via catalytic B-H bond activation is reported. Amide directing groups in combination with rhodium and iridium catalysts allowed for the direct functionalization of cage boron vertices. Products comprising B-C, B-N and B-Cl bonds were synthesized. As a key intermediate of the B-H activation step, an iridium complex with a direct B-Ir interaction was isolated and fully characterized by spectroscopic methods as well as X-ray crystallography.

Abstract:Two salts containing diphosphorus-centered radical anion 1(•-) and diradical dianion 1(2-••) were obtained by one- and two-electron reductions of an indenofluorene-bridging diphosphaalkene (1) with K and KC8, respectively. The salts have been characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. EPR spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the spin density of the radicals mainly resides on the phosphorus atoms, and 1(2-••) has an open-shell singlet ground state. 1(•-) and 1(2-••) represent the first isolable and structurally characterized diphosphorus-centered radical anion and dianion.

Abstract:Radicals of the lightest group 13 element, boron, are well established and observed in numerous forms. In contrast to boron, radical chemistry involving the heavier group 13 elements (aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium) remains exceedingly underexplored, primarily attributed to the formidable synthetic challenges associated with these elements. Herein, we report the synthesis and isolation of planar and twisted conformers of a doubly CAAC (cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene)-radical-substituted dialane. Extensive characterization through spectroscopic analyses and X-ray crystallography confirms their identity, while quantum chemical calculations support their open-shell nature and provide further insights into their electronic structures. The dialane-connected diradicals exhibit high susceptibility to oxidation, as evidenced by electrochemical measurements and reactions with o-chloranil and a variety of organic azides. This study opens a previously uncharted class of dialuminum systems to study, broadening the scope of diradical chemistry and its potential applications.

Abstract:Aromatic boron-containing organic compound C 2 B 2 H 2 with an unusual C=C bond was experimentally synthesized in 2017. Here we investigate the structure and bonding nature of C 2 B 2 H 2 and its derivatives C 2 B 2 R 2 using DFT and VB theory. While the C=C bond in C 2 B 2 R 2 consists of a π bond and a charge-shift (CS) bond, C 2 B 2 F 2 has the lowest LUMO energy and its LUMO is similar with that of ethylene, suggesting that C 2 B 2 F 2 can be an ideal dienophile for the Diels-Alder reaction. Subsequently, the mechanism and stereoselectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction of C 2 B 2 F 2 with 5-substituted cyclopentadienes are studied. Computations demonstrate that these Diels-Alder reactions are feasible thermodynamically and kinetically. The stereoselectivity and distortion angles of C 2 B 2 R 2 exhibit linear correlations with the electronegativity difference between the two substituents bonded to the C(sp 3 ) of cyclopentadiene, suggesting that the stereoselectivity of related Diels-Alder reaction products can be modulated by the substitution of cyclopentadiene. Considering the current interests in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), we design six BNCT drugs through the Diels-Alder reaction of C 2 B 2 F 2 with dienes containing peptide fragments. Thus, we demonstrate a kind of new method of designing three-in-one BNCT drugs with the facile Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract:closo-Boranes and closo-carboranes, clusters with a closed-cage structure, exhibit remarkable inertness and are unique components of products with applications in areas such as medicinal chemistry, fluorescence and materials science. Herein, we report the first transition metal-catalyzed functionalization of the mono-closo-decaborate cluster [1-CB9H10]- by regioselective B-H activation. Using terminal alkenes bearing a wide range of functional groups, dehydrogenative coupling under mild conditions leads to B2/3-dialkenylated products, as verified by X-ray crystallography and NMR studies. This substitution pattern has not been accessible by other methods and enables the straightforward synthesis of new derivatives of the {CB9} cluster.

Abstract:Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:Six boron heterocyclic radicals with different conformations or configurations were synthesized in solid neon and identified by matrix isolation infrared spectroscopy as well as quantum-chemical calculations. The ground-state boron atom selectively attacks the C = C bond of cycloheptene forming η 2 (1,2)-BC 7 H 12 complex ( A ), which contains a chair conformation and a boat conformation. Species A isomerizes to the 2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydroborocine radical ( B ), which involves an eight-membered boron heterocyclic ring and also has two isomers observed. The 1-(prop-1-en-1-yl)-2,3,4-dihydro borole radical ( C ) with E -configuration and Z -configuration is generated as the final product under UV light irradiation through ring contraction reaction and the hydrogen atom transfer reaction. The observation of species A and further photo-isomerization to species C is consistent with theoretical predictions that these reactions are thermodynamically exothermic and kinetically facile. This work not only provides a possible route for future design and synthesis of corresponding borole derivatives, but also provides new insights into the structural and spectroscopic information of boron heterocyclic radicals with different conformations and configurations.
