Abstract:The extraction and characterization of bioactive compounds from bamboo shoot shell was performed under ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) along with UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS analysis. Under optimized UAE conditions (ethanol concentration (58%), liquid to solid ratio (24 mL/g), extraction temperature (59 °C), and sonication time (29 min)), total phenolic content (TPC) was recorded highest as 85.3 mg GAE/g DW, while DPPH and FRAP antioxidant activities were 77 μmol AAE/g DW and 33 μmol AAE/g DW, respectively. Using UPLC-Triple-TOF/MS analysis, fifteen phenolic acids, seven flavonoids, nineteen organic acids, two iridoid glucosides, and one neoglinan were identified. Among them, p -coumaric acid (119 μg/g DW), chlorogenic acid (87 μg/g DW), rutin (39 μg/g DW), and ferulic acid (17 μg/g DW) were found to be the most abundant phenolic compounds. Furthermore, compounds including phenolic acids (3 -p- coumaroylquinic acid, cryptochlorogenic acid, 3 -O- feruloylquinic acid, 5 -O- feruloylquinic acid, 3 -O- caffeoylshikimic acid, 5 -p- coumaroylquinic acid, 1,3-dicaffeoyl quinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoyl quinic acid), flavonoids (schaftoside/c-hexosyl-c-pentosylapigenin, apigenin 6,8-di-C-α- l -arabinopyranoside, kaempferide 3 -O- α- l -rhamnopyranosyl(1->6)-β- d -glucopyranoside, 6-C-β- d -glucopyranosyl-8-C-α- l -arabinopyranosylchrysin, narcissin), some organic acids, iridoid glucosides, and neolignan were also detected for the first time from bamboo shoot shell extract. The present study revealed that bamboo shoot shell extract contains a larger number of nutraceutically active compounds which can be further utilized by food and nutraceutical industries.

Abstract:As secondary metabolites commonly existent in plants, polyphenols have a variety of special physiological functions such as anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, anti-aging, reducing blood sugar and blood lipid levels, and preventing cardiovascular diseases. Barley ( Hordeum vulgare) has been used as a significant source of natural antioxidants, due to its high contents of phenolic compounds such as catechin and proanthocyanidins . The total polyphenol content in barley can be up to 1200~1500 mg/kg. Based on the documented researches, this article summarized the varieties and contents of barely polyphenols, their extraction and determination methods, as well as the research progress in their application to animal feed, brewing beer and human health.

Abstract:A wide range of phenolic compounds participate in oilseed growth, regulate oxidative stability of corresponding vegetable oil, and serve as important minor food components with health-promoting effects. Composition distribution of phenolic compounds varied in oilseeds. Isoflavones, sinapic acid derivatives, catechin and epicatechin, phenolic alcohols, chlorogenic acid, and lignans were the main phenolic compounds in soybean, rapeseed, peanut skin, olive, sunflower seed, sesame and flaxseed, respectively. Among which, the total isoflavones content in soybean seeds reached from 1,431 to 2,130 mg/100 g; the main phenolic compound in rapeseed was sinapine, representing 70-90%; chlorogenic acid as the predominant phenolic compound in sunflower kernels, represented around 77% of the total phenolic content. With the rapid development of analytical techniques, it is becoming possible for the comprehensive profiling of these phenolic compounds from oilseeds. This review aims to provide recently developments about the composition distribution of phenolic compounds in common oilseeds, advanced technologies for profiling of phenolic compounds by the metabolomics approaches based on mass spectrometry. As there is still limited research focused on the comprehensive extraction and determination of phenolics with different bound-forms, future efforts should take into account the non-targeted, pseudo-targeted, and spatial metabolomic profiling of phenolic compounds, and the construction of phenolic compound database for identifying and quantifying new types of phenolic compounds in oilseeds and their derived products.

Abstract:Phenolic acids, a class of secondary metabolites containing phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, are widely distributed in higher plants. Phenolic acids are bound to structural components of the cell wall through ester and ether linkages in plant food materials, and have multiple bioactivities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity. Phenolic compounds have gained wide interest in recent years and become one of the hotspots in the field of food research. Through a series of biological regulation techniques, various phenolic acids can be enriched in plant food materials, thereby effectively improving their nutritional value. In this paper, the types, structures, biosynthesis, metabolic regulation and bioactivities of phenolic acids in plant food materials are summarized. In the end, the future directions are also discussed.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds constitute a large and diverse group of secondary metabolites derived from phenylalanine and tyrosine and are widely distributed throughout the plant kingdom. They could be divided into different classes such as simple phenol, phenyl acetic acid, hydroxybenzoic acid, hydroxycinnamic acid, and other phenylpropanoids as well as condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) and hydrolysable tannins, among others, depending on their basic carbon skeleton structure. Phenolic compounds in plant-based foods have been suggested to have a number of beneficial health effects including prevention of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, immune disorders, neurogenerative disease and others. These properties are largely attributable to the antioxidant activity of the phenolic compounds as well as other mechanisms of action. Therefore, nutraceuticals of plant origin may evolve to be considered a vital aspect of dietary-disease preventive food components. Agri-food industries generate substantial quantities of phenolic rich by-products, which could serve as an attractive and commercially viable source of nutraceuticals. This contribution mainly summarizes the occurrence of phenolic compounds and some other bioactives in various Agri-food by-products, their bioavailability and health benefits.

Abstract:Nowadays, there is a gap between the theoretical bioactivity of (poly)phenols and their real influence in health, once ingested. Due to this, new studies, including in vitro and in vivo models that allow for exploring bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and bioactivity, need to be developed to understand the actual importance of consuming functional foods, rich in these plant secondary metabolites. Moreover, current new strategies need to be developed to enhance the content of these foods, as well as setting up new formulations rich in bioaccessible and bioavailable compounds. Altogether, it could give a new horizon in therapy, expanding the use of these natural functional compounds, ingredients, and foods in the clinical frame, reducing the use of synthetic drugs. As a result, the joint contribution of multidisciplinary experts from the food science, health, and nutrition areas, together with the industrial sector, would help to reach these objectives. Taking this into account, diverse studies have been included in this study, which comprises different strategies to approach these objectives from different, complementary, points of view, ranging from the enrichment of by-products in bioactive compounds, through different agricultural techniques, to the assimilation of these compounds by the human body, both in vitro and in vivo, as well as by clinical studies.

Abstract:For thousands of years, plant has been widely applied in the medical area and is an important part of human diet. A high content of nutrients could be found in all kinds of plants, and the most outstanding group of nutrients that attracts scientists' attention is the high level of phenolic compounds. Due to the relationship between high phenolic compound content and high antioxidant capacity, plant extracts are expected to become a potential treatment for oxidation stress diseases including diabetes and cancer. However, according to the instability of phenolic compounds to light and oxygen, there are certain difficulties in the extraction of such compounds. But after many years of development, the extraction technology of phenolic compounds has been quite stable, and the only problem is how to obtain high-quality extracts with high efficiency. To further enhance the value of plant extracts, concentration and separation methods are often applied, and when detailed analysis is required, characterization methods including HPLC and LC/GC–MS will be applied to evaluate the number and type of phenolic compounds. A series of antioxidant assays are widely performed in numerous studies to test the antioxidant capacity of the plant extracts, which is also an important basis for evaluating value of extracts. This paper intends to provide a view of a variety of methods used in plants' phenolic compound extraction, separation, and characterization. Furthermore, this review presents the advantages and disadvantages of techniques involved in phenolic compound research and provides selected representative bibliographic examples.

Abstract:The agro-food industries generate significant waste with adverse effects. However, these byproducts are rich in polyphenols with diverse bioactivities. Innovative non-thermal extraction (NTE) technologies (Naviglio extractor®, cold plasma (CP), high hydrostatic pressure (HHP), pulse-electric field (PEF), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), etc.) and their combinative effect (integrated UAE + HPPE, integrated PEF + enzyme-assisted extraction, etc.) could improve polyphenolic extraction. Hence, this article comprehensively reviewed the mechanisms, applications, drawbacks, and safety assessment of emerging NTE technologies and their combinative effects in the last 5 years, emphasizing their efficacy in improving agro-byproduct polyphenols' extraction. According to the review, incorporating cutting-edge NTE might promote the extraction ofmore phenolic extractfrom agro-byproducts due to numerous benefits,such as increased extractability,preserved thermo-sensitive phenolics, and low energy consumption. The next five years should investigate combined novel NTE technologies as they increase extractability. Besides, more research must be done on extracting free and bound phenolics, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and lignans from agro by-products. Finally, the safety of the extraction technology on the polyphenolic extract needs a lot of studies (in vivo and in vitro), and their mechanisms need to be explored.

Abstract:There is a growing demand for vegetal food having health benefits such as improving the immune system. This is due in particular to the presence of polyphenols present in small amounts in many fruits, vegetables and functional foods. Extracting polyphenols is challenging because extraction techniques should not alter food quality. Here, we review technologies for extracting polyphenolic compounds from foods. Conventional techniques include percolation, decoction, heat reflux extraction, Soxhlet extraction and maceration, whereas advanced techniques are ultrasound-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, high-voltage electric discharge, pulse electric field extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction. Advanced techniques are 32–36% more efficient with approximately 15 times less energy consumption and producing higher-quality extracts. Membrane separation and encapsulation appear promising to improve the sustainability of separating polyphenolic compounds. We present kinetic models and their influence on process parameters such as solvent type, solid and solvent ratio, temperature and particle size.

Abstract:The phytonutrient extract helps in the development and manufacturing of nutraceuticals and food additives. Some of these secondary metabolites, such as polyphenol, anthocyanins, carotenoids, flavonoids, phytosterols, terpenoids, and others, are extracted from plants. These phytonutrients provide many health benefits like prevention and treatment of a variety of diseases such as cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, atherosclerosis, certain cancers, and diabetes. Traditional extraction methods such as Soxhlet, maceration, decoction, percolation and infusions are still used, but significant improvements can be made by using novel or greener extraction methods, including accelerated solvent extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, and enzyme-assisted extraction. Once extracted, these phytonutrients can be utilised in the cosmetic, nutraceuticals, pharmaceutical, or food industries, with the later focusing on improving food quality. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the various techniques used in the extraction and isolation of phytonutrients. Additionally, this article describes the advantages, disadvantages, practical examples, and a comparative study of these processes.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites frequently found in plants that exhibit many different effects on human health. Because of the relevant bioactivity, their identification and quantification in agro-food matrices as well as in biological samples are a fundamental issue in the field of quality control of food and food supplements, and clinical analysis. In this review, a critical selection of sensors and biosensors for rapid and selective detection of phenolic compounds is discussed. Sensors based on electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry, fluorescence, and colorimetry are discussed including devices with or without specific recognition elements, such as biomolecules, enzymes and molecularly imprinted materials. Systems that have been tested on real matrices are prevalently considered but also techniques that show potential development in the field.

Abstract:Polyphenolic compounds (PCs) have received exceptional attention at the end of the past millennium and as much at the beginning of the new one. Undoubtedly, these compounds in foodstuffs provide added value for their well-known health benefits, for their technological role and also marketing. Many efforts have been made to provide simple, effective and user friendly analytical methods for the determination and antioxidant capacity (AOC) evaluation of food polyphenols. In a parallel track, over the last twenty years, nanomaterials (NMs) have made their entry in the analytical chemistry domain; NMs have, in fact, opened new paths for the development of analytical methods with the common aim to improve analytical performance and sustainability, becoming new tools in quality assurance of food and beverages. The aim of this review is to provide information on the most recent developments of new NMs-based tools and strategies for total polyphenols (TP) determination and AOC evaluation in food. In this review optical, electrochemical and bioelectrochemical approaches have been reviewed. The use of nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon nanomaterials and hybrid materials for the detection of polyphenols is the main subject of the works reported. However, particular attention has been paid to the success of the application in real samples, in addition to the NMs. In particular, the discussion has been focused on methods/devices presenting, in the opinion of the authors, clear advancement in the fields, in terms of simplicity, rapidity and usability. This review aims to demonstrate how the NM-based approaches represent valid alternatives to classical methods for polyphenols analysis, and are mature to be integrated for the rapid quality assessment of food quality in lab or directly in the field.

Abstract:With the proposal of replacing toxic solvents with non-toxic solvents in the concept of green chemistry, the development and utilization of new green extraction techniques have become a research hotspot. Phenolic compounds in edible oils have good antioxidant activity, but due to their low content and complex matrix, it is difficult to achieve a high extraction rate in a green and efficient way. This paper reviews the current research status of novel extraction materials in solid-phase extraction, including carbon nanotubes, graphene and metal–organic frameworks, as well as the application of green chemical materials in liquid-phase extraction, including deep eutectic solvents, ionic liquids, supercritical fluids and supramolecular solvents. The aim is to provide a more specific reference for realizing the green and efficient extraction of polyphenolic compounds from edible oils, as well as another possibility for the future research trend of green extraction technology.

Abstract:<p>Polyphenols are compounds naturally present in fruits and vegetables that are gaining more and more attention due to their therapeutic effects and their potential technological applications. In this review, we intend to demonstrate the importance of some phenolic compounds, addressing their biological effects and potential for applications in various industrial fields. The intake of these compounds in appropriate concentrations can present promising effects in the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and others. They can also be used to improve the physicochemical properties of starch, in the preservation of foods, such as natural dyes, prebiotic ingredients, hydrogels and nanocomplexes. In addition, these compounds have potential for innovation in the most diverse technological fields, including organic fine chemistry, basic materials chemistry, pharmaceuticals, food chemistry, chemical engineering, etc.</p>
