Abstract:This is a speech delivered at the closing ceremony of The Third International Ibsen Conference in China, which introduces some people and their studies on Ibsen in China, and takes A Doll's House as an example for an ethical analysis. The speech chooses Professor Wang Zhongxiang, Professor Kwok-kan Tam, Professor Knut Brynhildsvoll and others for an evaluation of their studies as the evidence of achievements in the Ibsen studies in the New Period in China. The speech, from the perspective of ethical literary criticism, also analyses A Doll's House as a moral play to raise moral questions and concludes that Ibsen's so-called social problem plays are ethical problem ones.

Abstract:This paper first analyzes the purpose, field, tenor and mode of the 36th International Systemic Functional Congress(ISFC-36)and then briefly summarizes the main contents of the presentations involving the theory and practice of this linguistics school, particularly of those made by its main representatives such as M.A.K. Halliday, James Martin, Christian Matthiessen on the recent research results and newly blazed areas. The focus of the paper, however, is on making reflections on ISFC-36, with the purpose of helping Chinese scholars and students set their research orientations or locate their research areas in order to keep up with the academic frontiers and make more contributions to the advancement of SFL in China. The paper has also made suggestions which may be useful to those who intend to attend international conferences.

Abstract:At the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping proposed to accelerate the construction of a "digital China" by promoting digitalisation in education in order to achieve a "digitally strong nation". The training of talents in the context of the new liberal arts should be transformed from traditional humanities literacy to "digital humanities literacy". This paper takes the English Speech course as the starting point and the "Five Powers Model" as the theoretical basis to carry out teaching experiments and explore how to use the new media platforms to enhance the "digital humanities literacy" of English learners in colleges and universities, so as to improve their their "international communication power" and achieve the goal of “delivering the voice of China".

Abstract:Following the trend of quick development of international organizations, China has to find out her cultural orientation in her closer cooperation with international organizations. First, China should actively join different kinds of international dialogues, to advance cultural “taking” and “giving” simultaneously. Secondly, emphasize the dynamic study of “idea strategy” and the construction of “cultural politics”. Thirdly, truly comprehend and well explain the contemporary value of Chinese cultural tradition, based on the deep understanding of the practical demands of modern world and China's national interests. For example, we should exploit more theoretical space on the issue of “human rights” and “sovereign rights”. Considering the peaceful international communication, the studies of “evolutionary learning”, “communication and human behavior”, “intercultural conflict”, are good sources of inspiration.

Abstract:This paper elaborates the development of spatial structure in our country.Because the forms and types are colorful and incessantly innovating,it is necessary to divide spatial structure by component elements.After the 21th century,the development of our nation’s spatial structure comes into a new period that the application range and fields for spatial structure extend continuously.Besides the large-span public buildings such as gymnasiums and airports,there are extensive and innovative applications including large-scale railway stations,stations awning without column,bridges and high-rise buildings for spatial structure.About the international cooperation,it is suggested to have an open mind and optimistic view towards the fact that that architecture scheme for our nation’s spatial structures are frequently led by foreign companies.China is already a country with a great deal of the top of the world spatial structures,thus it is our responsibility to strive to create even better and advanced spatial structures.Some issues which we should pay more attention are pointed out.

Abstract:This text is based on a speech given in November 2022. Its content seems more relevant today than ever: To get along and to cooperate well, human societies around the world have to overcome a dangerous Cold War mentality that is still lurking and even growing today. In the current atmosphere, the importance of the world’s understanding of Chinese culture cannot be overemphasized. In order to counter the dangerous developments and lay the foundation for a peaceful and fruitful future, I argue that one of the most important tasks—for Chinese and non-Chinese observers alike—is to study the works of classical Chinese philosophy. In this direction, I discuss the respective points of view of important Chinese scholars, such as Qian Mu, Liang Qichao, Liang Shuming, Xiong Shili, Ma Yifu, and Mou Zhongjian. All of them have highlighted the importance of mastering Confucian and other classical writings. Their views are discussed in view of passages from The Analects, the (book of) Xunzi, the Mengzi, as well as other ancient works and the canon of important later works in pre-modern Confucian traditions.

Abstract:General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed during the 30th collective study of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee that we should have profound understanding on the importance and necessity of strengthening and improving international communication work under the new situation, and make great efforts to strengthen international communication capacity building and form an international discourse that matches our comprehensive national power and international status. International communication capacity building has become an important task for China at present. This paper makes intellectual inquiries to explore three paths for strengthening international communication capacity building in an hope to providing references and lessons for strengthening international communication capacity building: (1) Breaking the discourse construction of China by the Western discourse system and building a Chinese discourse system based on Chinese perspective and human perspective. (2) Telling Chinese stories with Chinese discourse and forming a Chinese narrative system. (3) Making Chinese voices with Chinese discourse, guiding the official public opinion field and spreading the private public opinion field to improve international public opinion guidance.

Abstract:The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project (Million Book Project) is an international cooperation program between China and the US. However, one million digitized books are considered not to be the ultimate goal of the project, but a first step towards universal access to human knowledge. In particular, there are four challenges about the new way to analyze, process, operate, visualize and interact with digital media resource in this library. To tackle these challenges, North China Centre of Million Book Project (in Chinese Academy of Sciences) has initiated several innovative research projects in areas such as multimedia content analysis and retrieval, bilingual services, multimodal information presentation, and knowledge-based organization and services. In this keynote speech, we simply review our work in these areas, and argue that by technological cooperation with these innovation research topics, the project will develop a top-level digital library platform for the million book library.

How Language Usage Shapes the Public Acceptance of Immigrant Assimilation: the Case of China

Abstract:Previous studies have suggested that immigrants using the language of their host country can increase native citizens' support for immigration. However, it is unclear whether the language effect differs in the developing world with limited immigration experience, and the underlying mechanism is also debatable. Incorporating the stereotype content model (SCM), our study proposes that language usage can increase immigrants' perceived warmth and competence, affecting the local public's immigration approval in different ways. We conduct a survey experiment with over 2100 respondents in China by randomly assigning participants to a treatment in which they view a video clip of a Caucasian immigrant speaking English, accented Chinese, or fluent Chinese. Our results show that speaking Chinese increases the public acceptance of an immigrant by 3-5 percentage points, while no significant effect arises between accented and fluent Chinese. Mediation analysis indicates that both assimilationist (cultural) and instrumental (economic) concerns drive the results.
