Abstract:In the situation of gradual globalization, communication and interaction between various languages and conventions have become more frequent. The reflection of the difference between Chinese and Western thinking in linguistic and cultural diversity has become more apparent and essential. By doing this, people can have a further comprehension of the values, cognitive styles, and social habits behind different cultures and languages. In recent research, it has been shown that there are differences in language expression between China and the West, as well as differences in personal values and time. The author would like to research the differences between Chinese and Western ways of thinking in language, the differences in social etiquette and ways of interacting with the different values and cognitive styles. The purpose of the research is to assist people better cope with the challenges of cultural conflicts and exchanges and to foster mutual cooperation among different cultures. The research method used in this paper is the literature review, and the significance of the research is that it not only can help people better cope with and conform to this difference in thinking between China and the West, but it also improves the international communication capacity of future students.

Abstract:According to Hofstede's cultural dimensions theory, the Sino-American cultural conflict depicted in American writer Peter Hessler's documentary book River Town focuses on four aspects: Individualism versus Collectivism, Power Distance, Long-term versus Short-term, Indulgence versus Restraint. Hessler experienced inevitable cultural conflicts in physical and mental aspects. Finally good things wear out. He fitted into Chinese life and fell in love with this Chinese town. Through the textual analysis of the cases in the book, the cultural conflicts between China and the United States and the intercultural communication skills used by the cross-boundary communicators can be clarified. Under the background of reform and opening up, Chinese society has undergone great changes, the stereotype of traditional China has been broken in River Town. Thus, it is very important to use intercultural communication skills in different places according to local conditions and times.

Abstract:Following the trend of quick development of international organizations, China has to find out her cultural orientation in her closer cooperation with international organizations. First, China should actively join different kinds of international dialogues, to advance cultural “taking” and “giving” simultaneously. Secondly, emphasize the dynamic study of “idea strategy” and the construction of “cultural politics”. Thirdly, truly comprehend and well explain the contemporary value of Chinese cultural tradition, based on the deep understanding of the practical demands of modern world and China's national interests. For example, we should exploit more theoretical space on the issue of “human rights” and “sovereign rights”. Abstract:In the current society, people are living in an era of cross-cultural communication, where they are influenced by a variety of cultural differences. In the process of learning a new language, individuals face numerous difficulties and challenges due to this cultural diversity. language and culture are closely interconnected. This article examines the specific challenges encountered by non-native speakers of Chinese when learning the Chinese language, arising from cultural differences, with a particular focus on the domains of translation and literature. After reviewing previous literature, the main arguments of this paper are: 1) Language is closely tied to culture; 2) There are significant differences in expression between Chinese and English; 3) Translation often lacks precision in terms of vocabulary; 4) Learners easily overlook context, leading to misunderstandings; 5) The use of imagery in Chinese and Western literature differs;6) The origins and preferences in the development of Chinese and Western literature diverge. Consequently, it sheds light on the efforts required by educators and learners involved in intercultural Chinese language communication.

Abstract:Under the current trend of globalization, there are three major ideas obstructing the advocation and promotion of Sino-West cultural communication.One idea claims that the cultural communication on equal terms is impossible and the general trend of world cultures will end up in one culture replacing the other.Another idea argues that the merging of cultures will eventually lead to unified world culture with no distinction.The last one tends to magnify the untranslatability between different languages and cultural systems.Analysis is carried out here as to the possilility of different cultures communicating equally,the possibility of achieving the unified world culture with no distinction,and the possibility of accurate translating between cultures.Whereupon a wish is proposed:both China and the West should seek deeper awareness and understanding of each other,and promote the further communication and merging of the two cultures on the common ground of equality.

Abstract:Culture is the cumulative deposit of knowledge, traditions, beliefs acquired by a human community in the course of generations: ethics is one of the most important of such beliefs. As for the intercultural communication, the discipline which studies a cultural dialogue about various issues across different communities, since the eighties of the last century it has been the object of various theories, based on experimental data collections: among them the ‘Values Orientation Theory’ by F.R. Kluckhohn and F. Strodtbeck, the ‘Cultural Dimensions Theory’ by G. Hofstede and the ‘Theory of Basic Values’ by S.H. Schwartz. One of the goals of this paper is to give a closer look at those theories. In the same period of time an ‘ethical turn’ manifested itself in western literary studies, after a long period of post-modernist disengagement, by initiative of J. Gardner, M. C. Nussbaum and J. Habermas, among others: the same happened in China in the eve of the new millennium, owing to the studies on comparative literature by Nie Zhenzhao. Literary works constitute an important vehicle of ethical intercultural communication. A second goal of the present paper is that of suggesting a ‘constructivist approach’ in the cultural dialogue between the western world and China, combining the results of those theoretical models with a comparative analysis of literary works chosen ad hoc, as recently done by Xu Zhilin in her comparative study of female images in ‘A leaf in the storm’, by Lin Yutang, and ‘Gone with the wind’, by Margareth Mitchell, from the perspective of Hofstede’s Cultural Dimension Theory.

Abstract:As a cross-cultural communicative activity,translation and interpretation is greatly influenced by linguistic and cultural differences,which very often poses difficulties for translators and interpreters in three aspects:difficulties in translating and interpreting culturally-loaded expressions,difficulties because of structural and grammatical difference,and difficulties in tackling imagery confrontations.According to Skopos theory,the overall Skopos of translational action determines the translation process.Hence,different strategies should be employed flexibly by translators and interpreters when dealing with linguistic and cultural differences in translation and interpretation.

Abstract:As a bridge and linkage of external communication, translation undertakes an important task for international communication. With the enhancement of China's soft power, the diffusion of culture has become increasingly important. That makes translation an essential stage. However, in the process of translation, many mistranslations cause the international community to misunderstand the original meaning and even misinterpret its culture. Starting from real situations and texts in Chinese to English translation, this study focuses on the problems of three phrases: “Taiwan question”, “The Communist Party of China”, and “People's democratic dictatorship” in Chinese to English translation by case analysis. As supplementary data, the researchers also conducted interviews with a Ph.D. in political science. It found that the problems may be created by the English meaning of the words, China's history and culture, and the translator's comprehension of the original language. Some suggestions for improving translation quality were also put forward from the perspectives of the country, the translation industry, and individuals.

Abstract:With globalization advancing, intercultural communication has become frequent, making language crucial for cultural exchange. As influential countries, China and the United States exhibit significant cultural differences in their communication styles. Chinese culture values politeness and subtlety, often favoring indirect expression, while American culture emphasizes direct and clear communication. These differences extend to non-verbal communication as well. Understanding and respecting these differences is essential for enhancing cooperation in politics, economy, and education. This paper explores the main differences in language communication between Chinese and American cultures, analyzes the misunderstandings and conflicts these differences cause, and proposes improvement strategies. The goal is to provide insights for intercultural communication, education, and training to cultivate global talents and foster a harmonious international environment. The paper is divided into five parts: the first introduces the relationship between language and culture and the cultural backgrounds of China and the United States; the second analyzes cultural differences in language communication; the third explores misunderstandings and conflicts; the fourth proposes strategies for improving intercultural communication; and the fifth summarizes the findings and suggests future research directions.

Abstract:Culture is a fundamental element for a nation and cultural awareness is important for the promotion of national image.A true cultural confidence can only be secured within cultural awareness.As far as translation is concerned,the goal of being culturally aware is to interpret and translate the most appropriate Chinese classics in the most appropriate way,based on the thorough understanding of the Western and Chinese cultural values and the full awareness of the existing differences in thinking and other aspects without doing damage to the Chinese cultural spirit,so as to fulfill the wish of the westerners to read Chinese classics and finally dissolve the disputes and promote the exchange of cultures.Based on the present situation of translation of Chinese classics,we argue that we need to cooperate with foreign experts concerned to obtain the best result of cultural dissemination.Generally,in the translation of Chinese works,we should adopt an attitude of valuing more the present than the past,attaching more importance to the works that reflect the contemporary society,culture,art and literature of China.By way of systematic planning,we can benefit most from the investment.

Abstract:With the advancement of technology and the societies, cross-cultural communication among diverse cultures has become increasingly frequent, which promotes the mutual learning of different cultures. Meanwhile, the cross-cultural misunderstandings and conflicts caused by cultural differences will continue to increase, resulting in cultural barriers. Hence, there is a growing sense of urgency that we need to enhance our understandings of people among different cultures and ethnic backgrounds which is conducive to eliminating cultural misconceptions. This study focuses upon the cultural differences in social hierarchy, interpersonal relationship, human-nature relationship as well as sense of time between China and the West from the perspective of Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory, whose aim is to trace back to the roots of cultural differences, thus eliminating cultural misunderstandings to a certain extent and facilitating cultural exchanges between China and the West.

Abstract:In cross-cultural communication, different cultures’ ways of interpretations of information can result in significant communication barriers. The disparities between high-context cultures, exemplified by Chinese, and low-context cultures, exemplified by English, are typically evident in the context of language use rather than the surface meaning of words. The same words can be interpreted differently across cultural contexts, leading to frequent misunderstandings. These communication misunderstandings can be categorized into three situations: different approaches to handling ambiguous language, the use of referential and non-referential language in different cultures. By deeply analyzing and comparing the pragmatic manifestations of high-context and low-context cultures in these aspects, it is evident that cross-cultural communication problems often stem from distinct cultural backgrounds and language habits. Solving these problems requires not only understanding the words themselves but also deeply grasping the underlying cultural logic and practices.
