Abstract:Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos, Jr.'s ascension to the presidency on June 30, 2022, stands as a pivotal moment in Philippine political history, highlighting a complex tableau of public forgiveness and historical amnesia. Marcos Jr., son of Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. — a dictator forced into exile merely 36 years prior following the People Power Revolution — not only secured the presidency but did so with a commanding majority, a first in post-Marcos Philippines. This unprecedented political resurrection, underscored by a narrative reconstruction of Marcos Sr.'s era from brutal and corrupt to a purported "golden age," is steeped in a strategic misinformation campaign and social media exploitation. This article series embarks on an analytical journey across four segments, scrutinizing the factors contributing to the re-emergence of the Marcos political lineage. Engaging with aspects from Marcos Jr.'s early life, examining the role of manipulated memories, unravelling the multifaceted reasons behind the political resurgence, and pondering upon anticipated foreign policy trajectories, the series endeavours to present a nuanced understanding of the myriad socio-political elements underpinning the startling return of a Marcos to power, while navigating through a sea of collective forgetfulness and historical revisionism in Philippine society.
