Abstract:This paper proposes a review focused on exotic chemotaxis and cross-diffusion models in complex environments. The term exotic is used to denote the dynamics of models interacting with a time-evolving external system and, specifically, models derived with the aim of describing the dynamics of living systems. The presentation first, considers the derivation of phenomenological models of chemotaxis and cross-diffusion models with particular attention on nonlinear characteristics. Then, a variety of exotic models is presented with some hints toward the derivation of new models, by accounting for a critical analysis looking ahead to perspectives. The second part of the paper is devoted to a survey of analytical problems concerning the application of models to the study of real world dynamics. Finally, the focus shifts to research perspectives within the framework of a multiscale vision, where different paths are examined to move from the dynamics at the microscopic scale to collective behaviors at the macroscopic scale.

Abstract:Many microorganisms exhibit a special pattern formation at the presence of a chemoattractant, food, light, or areas with high oxygen concentration. Collective cell movement can be described by a system of nonlinear PDEs on both macroscopic and microscopic levels. The classical PDE chemotaxis model is the Patlak-Keller-Segel system, which consists of a convection-diffusion equation for the cell density and a reaction-diffusion equation for the chemoattractant concentration. At the cellular (microscopic) level, a multiscale chemotaxis models can be used. These models are based on a combination of the macroscopic evolution equation for chemoattractant and microscopic models for cell evolution. The latter is governed by a Boltzmann-type kinetic equation with a local turning kernel operator that describes the velocity change of the cells. A common property of the chemotaxis systems is their ability to model a concentration phenomenon that mathematically results in solutions rapidly growing in small neighborhoods of concentration points/curves. The solutions may blow up or may exhibit a very singular, spiky behavior. In either case, capturing such singular solutions numerically is a challenging problem and the use of higher-order methods and/or adaptive strategies is often necessary. In addition, positivity preserving is an absolutely crucial property a good numerical method used to simulate chemotaxis should satisfy: this is the only way to guarantee a nonlinear stability of the method. For kinetic chemotaxis systems, it is also essential that numerical methods provide a consistent and stable discretization in certain asymptotic regimes. In this paper, we review some of the recent advances in developing of high-resolution finite-volume and finite-difference numerical methods that possess the aforementioned properties of the chemotaxis-type systems.

Abstract:As motivated by studies of cellular motility driven by spatiotemporal chemotactic gradients in microdevices, we develop a framework for constructing approximate analytical solutions for the location, speed and cellular densities for cell chemotaxis waves in heterogeneous fields of chemoattractant from the underlying partial differential equation models. In particular, such chemotactic waves are not in general translationally invariant travelling waves, but possess a spatial variation that evolves in time, and may even oscillate back and forth in time, according to the details of the chemotactic gradients. The analytical framework exploits the observation that unbiased cellular diffusive flux is typically small compared to chemotactic fluxes and is first developed and validated for a range of exemplar scenarios. The framework is subsequently applied to more complex models considering the chemoattractant dynamics under more general settings, potentially including those of relevance for representing pathophysiology scenarios in microdevice studies. In particular, even though solutions cannot be constructed in all cases, a wide variety of scenarios can be considered analytically, firstly providing global insight into the important mechanisms and features of cell motility in complex spatiotemporal fields of chemoattractant. Such analytical solutions also provide a means of rapid evaluation of model predictions, with the prospect of application in computationally demanding investigations relating theoretical models and experimental observation, such as Bayesian parameter estimation.
Analysis of a Chemotaxis Model for Multi-Species Host-Parasitoid Interactions

Abstract:This paper deals with a mathematical model of multi-species host-parasitoid interactions recently proposed by Pearce et al. The model con- sists of five reaction-diffusion-chemotaxis equations. By a fixed point method, together with Lp estimates and Schauder estimates of parabolic equations, we prove global existence and uniqueness of a classical solution for the model. Furthermore, the chemotaxis-driven linear instability for a sub-model is ana- lytically proven. 1. Mathematical Model Very recently, Pearce at al proposed a chemotaxis model describing aggrega- tive parasitoid behavior in a multi-species host-parasitoid system. The sysytem consists of two parasitoid species and two host species. The two parasitoids are, Cotesia glomerata and Cotesia rubecula. The two hosts are, Pieris brassicae and Pieris rapae. Both hosts are common crop pests of brassical species, and both parasitoids have been used as successful biological control agents against the host (3) (and references therein). The parasitoids aggregate in response to volatile infochemicals emitted by the crops that the hosts are feeding upon, and the infochemicals can thus be considered as chemoattractants. Abstract:We discuss recent progress in the theoretical description of chemotaxis by coupling the diffusion equation of a chemical species to equations describing the motion of sensing microorganisms. In particular, we discuss models for autochemotaxis of a single microorganism which senses its own secretion leading to phenomena such as self-localization and self-avoidance. For two heterogeneous particles, chemotactic coupling can lead to predator-prey behavior including chase and escape phenomena, and to the formation of active molecules, where motility spontaneously emerges when the particles approach each other. We close this review with some remarks on the collective behavior of many particles where chemotactic coupling induces patterns involving clusters, spirals or traveling waves.

Abstract:Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in a variety of processes in biology and ecology. Quite often it acts to improve efficiency of biological reactions. One example is the immune system signalling, where infected tissues release chemokines attracting monocytes to fight invading bacteria. Another example is reproduction, where eggs release pheromones that attract sperm. A macro scale example is flower scent appealing to pollinators. In this paper we consider a system of PDE designed to model such processes. Our interest is to quantify the effect of chemotaxis on reaction rates compared to pure reaction-diffusion. We limit consideration to surface chemotaxis, which is well motivated from the point of view of many applications. Our results provide the first insight into situations where chemotaxis can be crucial for reaction success, and where its effect is likely to be limited. The proofs are based on new analytical tools; a significant part of the paper is dedicated to building up the linear machinery that can be useful in more general settings. In particular we establish precise estimates on the rates of convergence to ground state for a class of Fokker-Planck operators with potentials that grow at a logarithmic rate at infinity. These estimates are made possible by a new sharp weak weighted Poincaré inequality improving in particular a result of Bobkov and Ledoux.

Abstract:Chemotaxis systems play a crucial role in modeling the dynamics of bacterial and cellular behaviors, including propagation, aggregation, and pattern formation, all under the influence of chemical signals. One notable characteristic of these systems is their ability to simulate concentration phenomena, where cell density undergoes rapid growth near specific concentration points or along certain curves. Such growth can result in singular, spiky structures and lead to finite-time blowups.

Abstract:Chemotaxis is a fundamental guidance mechanism of cells and organisms, responsible for attracting microbes to food, embryonic cells into developing tissues, immune cells to infection sites, animals towards potential mates, and mathematicians into biology. The Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) system forms part of the bedrock of mathematical biology, a go-to-choice for modellers and analysts alike. For the former it is simple yet recapitulates numerous phenomena; the latter are attracted to these rich dynamics. Here I review the adoption of PKS systems when explaining self-organisation processes. I consider their foundation, returning to the initial efforts of Patlak and Keller and Segel, and briefly describe their patterning properties. Applications of PKS systems are considered in their diverse areas, including microbiology, development, immunology, cancer, ecology and crime. In each case a historical perspective is provided on the evidence for chemotactic behaviour, followed by a review of modelling efforts; a compendium of the models is included as an Appendix. Finally, a half-serious/half-tongue-in-cheek model is developed to explain how cliques form in academia. Assumptions in which scholars alter their research line according to available problems leads to clustering of academics and the formation of "hot" research topics.

Abstract:This manuscript studies a no-flux initial-boundary value problem for a four-component chemotaxis system that has been proposed as a model for the response of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes to a solid tumor. In contrast to classical Keller-Segel type situations focusing on two-component interplay of chemotaxing populations with a signal directly secreted by themselves, the presently considered system accounts for a certain indirect mechanism of attractant evolution. Despite the presence of a zero-order exciting nonlinearity of quadratic type that forms a core mathematical feature of the model, the manuscript asserts the global existence of classical solutions for initial data of arbitrary size in three-dimensional domains.

Abstract:This paper proposes a survey and critical analysis focused on a variety of chemotaxis models in biology, namely the classical Keller–Segel model and its subsequent modifications, which, in several cases, have been developed to obtain models that prevent the non-physical blow up of solutions. The presentation is organized in three parts. The first part focuses on a survey of some sample models, namely the original model and some of its developments, such as flux limited models, or models derived according to similar concepts. The second part is devoted to the qualitative analysis of analytic problems, such as the existence of solutions, blow-up and asymptotic behavior. The third part deals with the derivation of macroscopic models from the underlying description, delivered by means of kinetic theory methods. This approach leads to the derivation of classical models as well as that of new models, which might deserve attention as far as the related analytic problems are concerned. Finally, an overview of the entire contents leads to suggestions for future research activities.

Abstract:We study the movement of the living organism in a band form towards the presence of chemical substrates based on a system of partial differential evolution equations. We incorporate Einstein's method of Brownian motion to deduce the chemotactic model exhibiting a traveling band. It is the first time that Einstein's method has been used to motivate equations describing the mutual interaction of the chemotactic system. We have shown that in the presence of limited and unlimited substrate, traveling bands are achievable and it has been explained accordingly. We also study the stability of the constant steady states for the system. The linearized system about a constant steady state is obtained under the mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We are able to find explicit conditions for linear instability. The linear stability is established with respect to the L-2 norm, H1-norm, and L-infinity norm under certain conditions.

A simple reaction-diffusion system as a possible model for the origin of chemotaxis

Abstract:Chemotaxis is a directed cell movement in response to external chemical stimuli. In this paper, we propose a simple model for the origin of chemotaxis - namely how a directed movement in response to an external chemical signal may occur based on purely reaction-diffusion equations reflecting inner working of the cells. The model is inspired by the well-studied role of the rho-GTPase Cdc42 regulator of cell polarity, in particular in yeast cells. We analyse several versions of the model to better understand its analytic properties and prove global regularity in one and two dimensions. Using computer simulations, we demonstrate that in the framework of this model, at least in certain parameter regimes, the speed of the directed movement appears to be proportional to the size of the gradient of signalling chemical. This coincides with the form of the chemical drift in the most studied mean field model of chemotaxis, the Keller-Segel equation.

Abstract:In the present review we focus on the chemotaxis-consumption model $\partial_t u - \Delta u = - \nabla \cdot (u \nabla v)$ and $\partial_t v - \Delta v = - u^s v$ in $(0,T) \times \Omega$, for any fixed $s \geq 1$, endowed with isolated boundary conditions and nonnegative initial conditions, where $(u,v)$ model cell density and chemical signal concentration. Our objective is to present an overview of the related literature and latest results on the aforementioned model concerning the following three distinct research lines we have obtained in [12,24-26]: the mathematical analysis, the numerical analysis and the related optimal control theory with a bilinear control acting on the chemical equation.

Abstract:We consider a generalized class of Keller-Segel models describing the chemotaxis of biological populations (bacteria, amoebae, endothelial cells, social insects,...). We show the analogy with nonlinear mean field Fokker-Planck equations and generalized thermodynamics. As an illustration, we introduce a new model of chemotaxis incorporating both effects of anomalous diffusion and exclusion principle (volume filling). We also discuss the analogy between biological populations described by the Keller-Segel model and self-gravitating Brownian particles described by the Smoluchowski-Poisson system.
Competing Effects of Attraction Vs. Repulsion in Chemotaxis

Abstract:We consider the attraction–repulsion chemotaxis system [Formula: see text] under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝn with smooth boundary, where χ ≥ 0, ξ ≥ 0, α > 0, β > 0, γ > 0, δ > 0 and τ = 0, 1. We study the global solvability, boundedness, blow-up, existence of non-trivial stationary solutions and asymptotic behavior of the system for various ranges of parameter values. Particularly, we prove that the system with τ = 0 is globally well-posed in high dimensions if repulsion prevails over attraction in the sense that ξγ - χα > 0, and that the system with τ = 1 is globally well-posed in two dimensions if repulsion dominates over attraction in the sense that ξγ - χα > 0 and β = δ. Hence our results confirm that the attraction–repulsion is a plausible mechanism to regularize the classical Keller–Segel model whose solution may blow up in higher dimensions.

Abstract:Chemotaxis is an event in which cells spatially sense their extro-environment and move along a chemokine gradient. Rapid advances in various cell- and molecule-based biomedical applications have led to increasing demands for the precise and proactive control of cell chemotaxis movement. This paper presents the development of a robot-aided optical manipulation tool for dynamics analysis and automated control of cell chemotaxis movement. Cell locomotion model is developed to characterize the relationship between the chemoattractant and the forces that govern the cell migration. The microparticles, releasing a chemokine while in motion, are optically trapped and robotically controlled to induce cell polarization and migration. Experiments performed on migrating leukemia cancer cells demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The arising research income of this paper will benefit the development of an automated control strategy for cell migration, targeting at the novel therapies in the future medicine.

Abstract:It is of great biological interest to understand the molecular origins of chemotactic behavior of E. coli by developing population-level models based on the underlying signaling pathway dynamics. We derive macroscopic models for E.coli chemotaxis that match quantitatively with the agent-based model (SPECS) for all ranges of the spacial gradient, in particular when the chemical gradient is large such that the standard Keller-Segel model is no longer valid. These equations are derived both formally and rigorously as asymptotic limits for pathway-based kinetic equations. We also present numerical results that show good agreement between the macroscopic models and SPECS. Our work provides an answer to the question of how to determine the population-level diffusion coefficient and drift velocity from the molecular mechanisms of chemotaxis, for both shallow gradients and large gradients environments.
