Abstract:It is vital for firms to develop total innovation management in order to survive and thrive in ever increasing competitive market. This paper examines the total innovation management competence by theoretical research and in-depth,case analysis in a Chinese private firm Fotile, so as to establish theory frame of total innovation management competence. Our findings and results show that this firm has four key aspects of total innovation management competence (strategy management competence, culture innovation management competence, technology innovation management competence, and market innovation management competence). It has practical meaning for building independent innovation of Chinese small medium-sized private firms and constructing total innovation management competence. This paper also proposes the direction of further research.

Abstract:Cultivating university students' entrepreneurial skills has become a worldwide common interest. Taking Zhejiang Province, China as a case, this paper firstly analyses the push and the pull forces of cultivating innovative and entrepreneurial talents. Then the contents of Zhejiang's entrepreneurship policy for university students are systematically elaborated. This research makes a conclusion that though more and more university students have chosen an entrepreneurial career because of the impact of entrepreneurship policy, the fragmentation of policy and the lack of university students' experience have to a great extent hindered the realisation of entrepreneurial activities. Further efforts should be made to better disseminate the policy and effectively put the policies into effect.

Abstract:To realize self-reliant innovation, competencies and dynamic capabilities must be built at the firm level. The experiences of leading companies show the importance of the combination and organization of present and future sets of technological competencies. As a developing country, the process of competencies accumulation in China is different from those countries that are scientifically and technologically more advanced. The elements of competencies in Chinese firms should be drawn by the practical situation. Thus in this paper, the authors provide a new framework for competencies accumulation for Chinese firms, then, based on the case studies on technology-based firms to verify their findings, several policy suggestions are also provided to those technology-based firms

Abstract:Innovation is the first impulse to lead development under innovation driving. Most enterprises face difficult position of weak innovation capacity in China. Through the long-term tracking study of Haier for more than 30 years, this paper takes the development main contradiction as the main line, it analyzes and summarizes the Haier Group’s path of improving innovation capacity under the background of transformation. This study found that the single technological innovation capability is mainly through the introduction imitation, digestion and absorption of technology in the early stage of Haier, with the change of the major contradiction, the innovation capability gradually becomes the combination innovation capability in the stage of diversified strategy, the stage of globalization marks the beginning of total innovation in Haier, and get into the stage of total innovation management. Therefore, the innovation capability has gone through three stages, it from the single technological innovation ability to the combinational innovation capability, and developed into total innovation at finally.

Abstract:In recent years, with more individualization needs and time-based market competition, many enterprises, including some Chinese top firms have realized that only by enhancing all employees quality and cultivating their innovation talent can contribute to the high performance of enterprise's innovation. Based on case study from a Chinese top enterprise, Shanghai Baosteel Group Corporation (SBGC) which driven itself sustainable and fast developments in resent years by challenging and involving all employees in the innovation process. The study defines "innovation by everyone (IbE)" as innovation is no longer the function for R&D personnel alone, but all employees' common behaviors. Personnel from R&D, to marketing, manufacturing, and management, etc., are all outstanding innovative sources and all their innovations can contribute to the development of the enterprise. IbE's five innovation-conducted transformations taken place in SBGC, and its running environments mainly including strategy, culture, institution and organization are studied in this paper to accomplish IbE into practice. At the end of the paper, some main points of this paper and future researches on IbE are put forward in this paper.

Abstract:This paper discussed Chinese SMEs' innovation competence based on total innovation management (TIM). We chose 2 high- tech SMEs as initial evidence to demonstrate our TIM model. It is believed that innovation is a process so that SMEs should improve their innovation competence in follow six dimensions to obtain excellent performance: 1) strategic innovation, 2) technologic innovation; 3) marketing innovation; 4) cultural innovation; 5) organizational innovation and 6) mechanism innovation. And these dimensions should be managed coordinately in order to improve firm's TIM competence. We also put forward some suggestions to SMEs in every dimension.

Abstract:By exploring the important mission shouldered by local universities in the construction of regional innovation systems, the educational situation of Wenzhou University, is considered as a typical example for local combined universities, as well as its prevailing problems in transformation have been analyzed. Furthermore, focusing on the element of core competence of universities, the paper expounds the importance and necessity to construct core competence, which promotes the transformation of a local combined university by promoting the establishment of regional innovation systems mainly through innovational education and teaching, innovational scientific, technological, and cultural campaigns. Finally, the paper proposes a strategic development with characteristic undergraduate education as the basis, service discipline construction as a leader, regional economic development as backing and advanced culture innovation as guarantee.

Abstract:How did enterprise innovation capability convolutes with external environment in the context of economic transition? In this paper, a longitude study is operated, using the case of Sunyard, to show the rule as well as the mechanism underlying the coevolution process. On the one hand, this paper reveals how enterprise adapt to the environment to pursue resources for product innovation under multi-institutional pressure; on the other hand, this paper reveals how companies leverage innovation capability through organizational learning and then select and manage the environment. More importantly, this paper links these two aspects, and reveals the ambidexterity mechanism between selection and adaptation. Theoretically, this finding not only unique to China, but also can be found in other developing countries with under transition.

Abstract:Firstly,considering the gap on the controversy about the indigenous innovation concept and dimension, based on knowledge-based view of capabilities,this paper differentiated and analyzed secondary innovation capability, integrated innovation capability and original innovation capability.Secondly,according to the lack of current academic research on the evolution path of indigenous innovation capabilities of enterprises under the transition context, this paper analyzes and summarizes the evolution path of indigenous innovation capabilities under the transition context through a longitudinal case study of Haier Group.The results show that:for the enterprise,which introduced technology from outside as a starting point,the evolution path of its indigenous innovation capabilities is starting from secondary innovation capability,and transferring to integrated innovation capacity,and ultimately to original innovation capability.Last but not least,the absorptive capacity is inherent basis in this evolution mode.In addition,the historical pressure and random events in this process play a role of an external thrust.This study opens the black box of indigenous innovation capabilities,and riches dynamic capabilities,technology catch-up and the co-evolution theory as well as provides practical suggestion for firms innovation and development activities under transition context.

The Incremental Development Of Innovation Capability In China: Evidence From China'S Enterprises

Abstract:Innovation capability is accumulated internally rather than acquired from other enterprises. With the development of enterprises, innovation capability developed dynamically based on the external environment and internal needs. Based on the analysis of three longitudinal cases, the rules of the incremental development of innovation capability can be summarized as follows: (1) Technological innovation capability, as one of the most important element is developed from imitating capability to creatively imitating capability to indigenous innovation capability. The evolution of technological innovation capability can be characterized of the transformation from low-level capability to high-level capability. (2) Innovation capability is composed of core technological capability and complementary capability. With the enterprise's development, the synergy between core technologies and complementary assets can promote the cultivation and development of innovation capability which demonstrate two major patterns including the extension of existing core technology with complementary assets and the involvement of new core technology. (3)The incremental development of innovation capability has changed from that of single element innovation capability leveraging to portfolio innovation capability leveraging, and then to total innovation capability leveraging. TIM theory has provided an appropriate framework to explore the evolution of innovation capability.

Abstract:Co-innovation is an effective way for Chinese enterprise to enhance its competence on technological innovation and so to improve the competitiveness especially after China became a member of WTO. There are two major models for co-innovation: E-E model and E-U-A model. E-E model means an enterprise co-innovates with other enterprises related to its technology. It can combine the advantages and core competence of different enterprises so as to form reinforced advantages, which can also be shared by all these related enterprises. E-U-A model means an enterprise co-innovates with universities and academies, which is effective for enterprises to form new technological advantages and to raise technological level, especially for the enterprises focusing on science-based innovation. Abstract:Purpose Innovation ecosystem is an emerging and popular concept in both academic and industrial circles. It offers a new perspective for enterprise strategy positioning. A business can create more value through a healthy innovation ecosystem. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, the authors utilize a new triple-layer core-periphery framework to analyze Insigma Group’s multi-platform collaboration innovation ecosystem, in order to explore the architecture and heterogeneous functions inside an innovation ecosystem. Findings The authors illustrate the components and working mechanisms of the four platforms, which function as ideation, entrepreneurship, financing and investment, and innovation, inside Insigma’s innovation ecosystem in detail, and explain how they interact and collaborate toward a shared aim of the whole innovation ecosystem. Research limitations/implications The innovation ecosystem is an emerging concept. In this study, the authors combined two existing analytical frameworks of innovation ecosystem, and proposed a triple-layer core-periphery framework, which enable us to analyze the heterogeneity inside an innovation ecosystem. Practical implications The authors discussed the role of government and its policies in shaping the innovation ecosystem at the enterprise level. Originality/value The authors believe that this paper provides a holistic study of Insigma’s innovation ecosystem. The triple-layer core-periphery framework can be used to study other enterprise innovation ecosystem in the future.

Core Entrepreneurial Competences of Chinese College Students: Expert Conceptualisation Versus Real-Life Cases

Abstract:Core entrepreneurial competence (CEC) is an important prerequisite for the success of college student entrepreneurs. Although there are plenty of studies on student entrepreneurs' competences, most of these have been conducted in Western developed countries. Thus, their findings may not be generalisable to other cultural contexts, such as Asian emerging economies such as China. The present study fills this gap by investigating the CECs of Chinese college students using a mix of the Delphi method and case studies. Two research questions are addressed: How do key stakeholder groups in China understand the CECs of college students? And what are the discrepancies between conceptualised CECs and the actual practices of Chinese student entrepreneurs? The findings suggest that the CECs of college students extracted from Chinese experts' opinions overlapped but were not completely consistent with the competence frameworks found in the literature. Such an inconsistency might be attributed to China's distinct sociocultural context and developmental stage. These conceptualised competences were also at odds with the real-life practices of student entrepreneurs. Three conflicts were identified: (1) innovation vs. transformation of ideas, (2) winning entrepreneurial competitions vs. starting/running an actual business and (3) establishing vs. sustaining teams. The findings suggest that the understanding of CECs should be enriched and sharpened to help entrepreneurs address real-life challenges.

Abstract:To obtain a sustainable competitive advantage and achieve global innovation leadership, firms in China and other emerging economies must develop strong indigenous innovation capabilities through the coevolution of strategy, organization, resources, and culture. Drawing on current innovation management theories and practices, this study proposes four systematic paths for improving firm innovation systems (FISs), namely, the R&D-based internal collaborative FIS, the strategic vision-driven FIS, the open and user-driven FIS, and the holistic ecosystem-driven FIS. This study contributes to the systematic approach for enhancing corporate indigenous innovation capability based on FISs. Moreover, this study provides theoretical and practical insights for China as well as other developing countries to cultivate world-class enterprises and build an innovative nation.
