Abstract:The construction and application of fullerene-containing pillar[]arene organic-inorganic hybrid composites/systems has been discussed and summarized. Both supramolecular interactions and covalent bonds were involved during the preparation process. By using supramolecular interactions, pillar[]arenes mainly donate the hydrophobic and electron-rich cavity for complexing fullerene and its derivatives. The "bigger-sized" unmodified pillar[10]arene could directly include C in a stoichiometry of 1/1 host-guest interaction, while the perfunctionalized "smaller-sized" pillar[5]arene with an enlarged channel-like structure could further interact with "size-fixed" fullerene. Additionally, recognition site-containing modified fullerene could integrate with the pillararene cavity for fabricating the functional supramolecular system, which could be further used for applications in photodevices. By forming stable covalent bonds, coupled pillar[]arene and fullerene hybrid composites could be synthesized either the modification of pillar[]arenes with the fullerene subunits, or the utilization of fullerene as the partial structural skeleton for building pillar[]arenes, in which diverse classic organic synthesis reactions were involved. Interestingly, those fullerene-containing pillar[]arenes with free cavities could further participate in the formation of hierarchical architectures, such as mechanically interlocked molecules, by cooperating with the "dumbbell" molecule.

Abstract:The recent progress in pillar[n]arene-assisted/participated carbon nanotube hybrid materials were initially summarized and discussed. The molecular structure of pillar[n]arene could serve different roles in the fabrication of attractive carbon nanotube-based materials. Firstly, pillar[n]arene has the ability to provide the structural basis for enlarging the cylindrical pillar-like architecture by forming one-dimensional, rigid, tubular, oligomeric/polymeric structures with aromatic moieties as the linker, or forming spatially "closed", channel-like, flexible structures by perfunctionalizing with peptides and with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Interestingly, such pillar[n]arene-based carbon nanotube-resembling structures were used as porous materials for the adsorption and separation of gas and toxic pollutants, as well as for artificial water channels and membranes. In addition to the art of organic synthesis, self-assembly based on pillar[n]arene, such as self-assembled amphiphilic molecules, is also used to promote and control the dispersion behavior of carbon nanotubes in solution. Furthermore, functionalized pillar[n]arene derivatives integrated carbon nanotubes to prepare advanced hybrid materials through supramolecular interactions, which could also incorporate various compositions such as Ag and Au nanoparticles for catalysis and sensing.

Abstract:The synthesis, development and application of the new supramolecular host-pillar[n]arene in recent four years are reviewed. Two main synthetic strategies were employed in the synthesis of pillar[n]arene and its derivatives: "firstly cyclization then modification" and "firstly modification then cyclization". Owing to its special conformational structures and physical and chemical properties, pillar[n]arene has been mainly applied to the fields such as host-guest complex and molecular recognition, construction of assembly and smart materials.

Abstract:Pillar[ n ]arenes primarily comprise pillar[5]arenes and pillar[6]arenes, which belong to the new class of supramolecular macrocyclic hosts. Pillar[ n ]arenes have aroused wide attention because of their highly rigid and symmetrical architectures, controllable cavity size, and wide applications in a wide variety of areas. Although pillar[6]arene is difficult to synthesize, numerous studies have been conducted on it. In this review, the strategies to synthesize and functionalize pillar[6]arenes are investigated systematically. In addition, their host-guest properties in organic solvents and in aqueous solution are described. Moreover, pillar[6]arenes applied in different fields ( e.g. , molecular recognition, drug release, cancer therapy, and gas separation) are clarified. Hopefully, this study is capable of arousing more attention from increasing scientists to study large-cavity pillar[ n ]arenes.

Abstract:To reserve planar chirality, enhance molecular recognition, and build advanced self-assemblies, hybrid macrocyclic hosts containing rigid pillar[n]arene and flexible calix[m]arene were designed, prepared and investigated for interesting applications. This review summarizes and discusses different synthetic strategies for constructing hybrid macrocyclic structures. Pillar[n]arene dimer with rigid aromatic double bridges provided the possibility of introducing calix[m]arene cavities, where the planar chirality was reserved in the structure of pillararene. The capacity for molecular recognition was enhanced by hybrid macrocyclic cavities. Interestingly, the obtained pillar[n]arene-calix[m]arene could self-assemble into "channels" and "honeycomb" in both the solid state and solution phase as well as donate the molecular architecture as the wheel for the formation of mechanically interlocked molecules, such as rotaxane. In addition, the pillar[n]arene and calix[m]arene could also be coupled together to produce pillar[n]arene embeded 1,3-alternate and cone conformational calix[m]arene derivatives, which could catalyze the oxidative polymerization of aniline in aqueous solutions. Except for building hybrid cyclophanes by covalent bonds, weak supramolecular interactions were used to prepare pillar[n]arene-calix[m]arene analogous composites with other pillar-like pillar[n]pyridiniums and calix-like calix[m]pyrroles, exhibiting reasonable performances in enhancing molecular recognition and trapping solvent molecules.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes are new generation of supramolecular macrocyclic host, which exhibit excellent host-guest recognition properties. In the last decade, functional materials constructed from pillar[n]arenes have been attracted more and more attention and displayed outstanding characteristics, such as stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing and adaptability. In this mini-review, we provide a survey of the pillar[n]arene-based literatures covering light-harvesting systems, functional hydrogels, and solid materials. It is anticipated that more and more pillar[n]arenes-based advanced materials with multi-functional properties will appear in the near future.

Abstract:The recently introduced pillar[n]arenes have provided chemists with receptors that, when incorporated into materials, confer unique properties upon them. The symmetrical rims and cylindrical shape of pillar[5]arene begs the question--can these pillar-like receptors be linked covalently end-to-end in order to create tubular structures by a growth-from-template approach? In our efforts to produce these one-dimensional extended structures, we have developed a new method of functionalizing pillar[5]arene in which one of the five hydroquinone units is converted into a diaminobenzoquinone analogue. The resulting diaminopillar[5]arene derivative, which undergoes a stereochemical inversion process that is slow on the (1)H NMR timescale, can be chemically modified yet further in a direction that is orthogonal to the plane of its methylene bridging carbons through the formation of oxazole heterocycles. This strategy has been employed to create rigid oligomers that resemble one-dimensional tubular arrays. As a proof-of-principle, a rigid pillar[5]arene dimer has been isolated and characterized in the solution state as a 1:1 complex with an extended viologen for which it acts as a receptor.

Abstract:Three pillar[n]arenes (n = 8-10) were synthesized. X-ray analysis demonstrated that, different from early reported small pillar[n]arenes (n = 5, 6), these larger macrocycles gave rise to two cavities. (1)H NMR and MS experiments revealed that pillar[9]arene complexed one n-octyltrimethyl ammonium in chloroform, while pillar[10]arene could complex two.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes are a new class of host molecules, which are cyclic oligomers consisting of hydroquinones or 1,4-disubstituted hydroquinone ethers linked by methylene bridges in the para positions of the benze rings. Herein, recent development on the synthesis of pillar[n]arenes and pillar[n]arene derivatives, and their host-guest chemistry, i. e., molecular recognition and selective binding towards guest molecules, and their self-assembly properties was reviewed. In addition, prospects for future research based on pillar[n]arenes were also discussed.

Abstract:Porphyrin-pillararene hybrid compounds/systems have attracted much more attention due to the synergistic effect generated by combining two significant macrocycles together in supramolecular chemistry. On the one side, porphyrin units can serve as the N-donor to coordinate with metal cations, acting as a good supplement to the supramolecular recognition abilities of pillararene cavities. On the other side, pillararenes can be grafted to bunches of various functional groups by efficient and easy modification procedures in order to improve the water-solubility of porphyrins for different applications, such as in biomedicine, as well as to enrich the family of porphyrin-based supramolecular architectures. Diverse bonds and interactions have been employed in the fabrication of porphyrin-pillararene hybrid compounds/systems, including covalent bonds and noncovalent interactions, as well as mechanical bonds. Thus, the obtained porphyrin-pillararene hybrid compound, supramolecular self-assembly, and mechanically interlocked molecules have wide applications, e.g., as hetero-ditopic receptors, in detection and sensing, as building blocks for advanced self-assembled materials, in drug delivery and release systems, in photodynamic therapies, and in light-harvesting devices.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry enables the manipulation of functional components on a molecular scale, facilitating a "bottom-up" approach to govern the sizes and structures of supramolecular materials. Using dynamic non-covalent interactions, supramolecular polymers can create materials with reversible and degradable characteristics and the abilities to self-heal and respond to external stimuli. Pillar[n]arene represents a novel class of macrocyclic hosts, emerging after cyclodextrins, crown ethers, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils. Its significance lies in its distinctive structure, comparing an electron-rich cavity and two finely adjustable rims, which has sparked considerable interest. Furthermore, the straightforward synthesis, uncomplicated functionalization, and remarkable properties of pillar[n]arene based on supramolecular interactions make it an excellent candidate for material construction, particularly in generating interpenetrating supramolecular polymers. Polymers resulting from supramolecular interactions involving pillar[n]arene find potential in various applications, including fluorescence sensors, substance adsorption and separation, catalysis, light-harvesting systems, artificial nanochannels, and drug delivery. In this context, we provide an overview of these recent frontier research fields in the use of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers, which serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of innovative functional polymer materials derived from pillar[n]arene derivatives.
