Abstract:This review discusses the design and syntheses of molecular-scale pillar[n]arene-based porous materials with promising applications and summarises the development of using pillar[n]arenes as the building blocks of porous materials. From the perspective of "role of participation" in the syntheses of molecular-scale pillar[n]arene-based porous materials, the content can be divided into pillar[n]arenes serving as supramolecular nanovalves on surfaces and as ligands for metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic polymers. By integrating pillararenes, which possess rigid pillar-like structures, electron-rich cavities and desirable host-guest properties, with porous polymers of large surface areas and abundant active sites, applications of the resulting materials in drug release platforms, molecular recognition, sensing, detection, gas adsorption, removal of water pollution, organic photovoltaic materials and heterogeneous catalysis can be realised simultaneously and efficiently. Finally, in the conclusions and perspectives part, we put forward the challenges and viewpoints of the current research on pillar[n]arene-based porous materials. We hope this article can provide a timely and valuable reference for researchers interested in synthetic macrocycles and porous materials.

Abstract:The study of biomedical applications based on supramolecular chemistry from versatile fascinating macrocyclic molecules to various self-assembled architectures has achieved considerable headway in the past decades. Herein, recent advances on pillar[n]arene-based polymers involving the synthesis, self-assembly as well as their practical and promising applications in controlled drug release, chemotherapy, photodynamic therapy, and anti-bacteria are holistically summarized. Through direct and powerful covalent and supplementary non-covalent strategies, functional pillar[n]arene-based polymers combining intelligent and controllable characteristics could be thoroughly constructed, offering marvelous prospects for promoting biomedical materials. In particular, pillar[n]arenes serving as terminal groups, side chains, cross-linkers, and building blocks are integrated into polymeric architectures to endow the entire supramolecular systems with more intriguing properties, such as distinct self-assembly behavior and charming stimuli-responsiveness. Some integral characterization tools are also employed to facilitate a deep understanding of the analytical process and interesting results. Overall, this review could lay a sound basis for the development of supramolecular system-based biomedical applications.

Abstract:Covalently bridged pillararene-based polymers (CBPPs) are a special class of macrocycle-based polymers in which multiple pillararene monomers are attached to the polymer structures by covalent bonds. Owing to the unique molecular structures including the connection components or the spatial structures, CBPPs have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from environmental science to biomedical science. In this review, CBPPs are divided into three types (linear polymers, grafted polymers, and cross-linked polymers) according to their structural characteristics and described from the perspective of synthesis methods comprehensively. In addition, the applications of CBPPs are presented, including selective adsorption and separation, fluorescence sensing and detection, construction of supramolecular gels, anticancer drug delivery, artificial light-harvesting, catalysis, and others. Finally, the current challenging issues and comprehensive prospects of CBPPs are discussed.

Abstract:Supramolecular chemistry enables the manipulation of functional components on a molecular scale, facilitating a "bottom-up" approach to govern the sizes and structures of supramolecular materials. Using dynamic non-covalent interactions, supramolecular polymers can create materials with reversible and degradable characteristics and the abilities to self-heal and respond to external stimuli. Pillar[n]arene represents a novel class of macrocyclic hosts, emerging after cyclodextrins, crown ethers, calixarenes, and cucurbiturils. Its significance lies in its distinctive structure, comparing an electron-rich cavity and two finely adjustable rims, which has sparked considerable interest. Furthermore, the straightforward synthesis, uncomplicated functionalization, and remarkable properties of pillar[n]arene based on supramolecular interactions make it an excellent candidate for material construction, particularly in generating interpenetrating supramolecular polymers. Polymers resulting from supramolecular interactions involving pillar[n]arene find potential in various applications, including fluorescence sensors, substance adsorption and separation, catalysis, light-harvesting systems, artificial nanochannels, and drug delivery. In this context, we provide an overview of these recent frontier research fields in the use of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular polymers, which serves as a source of inspiration for the creation of innovative functional polymer materials derived from pillar[n]arene derivatives.

Abstract:Supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their perfect combination of supramolecular chemistry and traditional polymer chemistry. The design and synthesis of macrocycles have driven the rapid development of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science. Pillar[n]arenes, a new generation of macrocyclic compounds possessing unique pillar‐shaped structures, nano‐sized cavities, multi‐functionalized groups, and excellent host–guest complexation abilities, are promising candidates to construct supramolecular polymer materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent progress in the design and synthesis of pillararene‐based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) and illustrates their diverse applications as adsorption and separation materials. All performances are evaluated and analyzed in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and recyclability. Typically, PSPs can be categorized into three typical types according to their topologies, including linear, cross‐linked, and hybrid structures. The advances made in the area of functional supramolecular polymeric adsorbents formed by novel pillararene derivatives are also described in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PSPs for separation‐based materials science are discussed. We envision that this review will inspire new researchers in different fields and stimulate creative designs of supramolecular polymeric materials based on pillararenes and other macrocycles for effective adsorption and separation of a variety of targets. Abstract:Hybrid materials comprising two or more nano/molecular components including organic, inorganic and metallic constituents have been the focus of scientific research in recent years. They usually exhibit new features or combine different properties from every single component, which makes them new functional materials. In this chapter, we will introduce pillararene-based hybrid materials, such as metal–organic frameworks, pillararene-stabilized metal nanoparticles, pillararene-hybridized carbon materials, pillararene-functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles, and pillararene-based hybrid porous materials. Compared with traditional hybrid materials, pillararene-based hybrid materials exhibit very special features due to their particular structures and supramolecular properties. This chapter provides an overview of the recent development of pillararene-based hybrid materials as well as their important applications in recognition, stabilization, dispersion, controlled drug release and absorption.

Abstract:We begin this review with an introduction to pillar[n]arenes by showing the research history of macrocyclic compounds and the shape, chemical structure, host-guest properties, synthesis, and functionalization of pillar[n]arenes. We then present the modification of pillar[n] arenes on surfaces such as solid and porous surfaces for the creation of molecular-scale porous materials. We also highlight pillar[n]arene assemblies such as one-dimensional channels, two-dimensional sheets, and three-dimensional vesicles, as well as the application of porous and soft-porous pillar[n]arene crystals for gas and organic vapor sorption materials. Finally, we discuss the advantages of using pillar[n]arenes for the synthesis of molecular-scale porous materials over other applications of pillar[n]arenes, as well as future perspectives in this exciting field.

Abstract:The synthesis, development and application of the new supramolecular host-pillar[n]arene in recent four years are reviewed. Two main synthetic strategies were employed in the synthesis of pillar[n]arene and its derivatives: "firstly cyclization then modification" and "firstly modification then cyclization". Owing to its special conformational structures and physical and chemical properties, pillar[n]arene has been mainly applied to the fields such as host-guest complex and molecular recognition, construction of assembly and smart materials.

Abstract:Over the last decade, pillararenes have shown remarkable potential in a variety of fields by virtue of their symmetrical pillar-shaped structures, flexible functionalization, and unique host–guest interactions. For diverse pillararene-based functional materials and technical applications, the tailored design and construction of pillararene-based supramolecular structures and assemblies are critical. Rationally modifying pillararenes and guests endows these supramolecular functional materials with stimuli-responsiveness, selective target recognition, and tunable self-assembly, among others. In this review, we summarize various forms of pillararene-based supramolecular assemblies or composite materials, along with their applications. In addition, we specifically introduce the employment of different pillararene-based systems in sensing and detection, adsorption and separation, modification of nanomaterials, and nanomedicines.

Abstract:Covalently bridged pillararene-based oligomers (CBPOs) are formed by covalent bonding of pillararene monomers, and they play a critical role in expanding the multi-disciplinary application of pillararenes due to their excellent molecular complexing ability, specially designed geometry and multifunctional linking groups. This article provides a comprehensive review of the synthesis and applications of CBPOs. The design and synthetic strategies of a series of CBPOs (dimers, trimers, tetramers and others) are first introduced. Many CBPOs with multi-cavities and unique geometry are very attractive and efficient building blocks for constructing novel smart supramolecular polymers (SPs) with different topological structures through host-guest interactions. We describe the methods of constructing various SPs based on CBPOs in detail. Furthermore, the extensive applications of CBPOs and CBPO-based SPs in recognition and detection of ions and organic small molecules, selective adsorption and separation, artificial light-harvesting systems, catalysis, drug delivery systems, and others are systematically introduced. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for CBPOs are also highlighted.

Abstract:Pillar[ n ]arenes primarily comprise pillar[5]arenes and pillar[6]arenes, which belong to the new class of supramolecular macrocyclic hosts. Pillar[ n ]arenes have aroused wide attention because of their highly rigid and symmetrical architectures, controllable cavity size, and wide applications in a wide variety of areas. Although pillar[6]arene is difficult to synthesize, numerous studies have been conducted on it. In this review, the strategies to synthesize and functionalize pillar[6]arenes are investigated systematically. In addition, their host-guest properties in organic solvents and in aqueous solution are described. Moreover, pillar[6]arenes applied in different fields ( e.g. , molecular recognition, drug release, cancer therapy, and gas separation) are clarified. Hopefully, this study is capable of arousing more attention from increasing scientists to study large-cavity pillar[ n ]arenes.

Abstract:Pillar[n]arenes (n = 5-15) are a novel class of macrocyclic molecules with hydroquinone as the repeating unit linked by methylene bridges at para-positions. Introduced by T. Ogoshi for the first time in 2008, pillararenes have attracted increasing interest and have been widely studied during the last eight years, due to their unique structural advantages as host molecules, such as symmetrical rigid architecture, electron-rich cavities and facile functional modification. In this review, we first describe the syntheses of pillar[n]arenes including cyclooligomerization of pillar[n]arenes and modification of pillar[n]arenes after cyclooligomerization, summarising almost twenty different kinds of guest motifs and dividing them into three types: cationic, neutral and anionic motifs. The main section of this review examines the applications of pillar[n]arenes based on the host-guest interactions in different research fields, including biology, materials science and environmental science. Finally, future research directions and potential for novel applications are discussed.

Abstract:AbstractConjugated microporous polymers are a unique class of polymers that combine extended π‐conjugation with inherent porosity. However, these polymers are synthesized through solution‐phase reactions to yield insoluble and unprocessable solids, which preclude not only the evaluation of their conducting properties but also the fabrication of thin films for device implementation. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of thin films of π‐conjugated microporous polymers by designing thiophene‐based electropolymerization at the solution–electrode interface. High‐quality films are prepared on a large area of various electrodes, the film thickness is controllable, and the films are used for device fabrication. These films are outstanding hole conductors and, upon incorporation of fullerenes into the pores, function as highly efficient photoactive layers for energy conversions. Our film strategy may boost the applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics.
Synthesis and Properties of Phenolic Resin Polymers Based on Pillar[5]arene

Abstract:Two new phenolic resin porous organic polymers PRP-1, PRP-2 were obtained by one-step polymerization of phenolic resin reaction using functionalized pillar[n]arene and 1,4-bis(4-formylphenyl)benzene as polymerization monomers. The pore characters of PRP-1 and PRP- 2 were evaluated by solid-state nuclear magnetic carbon spectroscopy (C-13 CP/MAS NMR), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen and carbon dioxide adsorption and desorption, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The results showed that mutilid-hydroxyl groups on the aromatic macrocycles of pillar[5]arene significantly affect the polymer structure, and the specific surface area of PRP-2 with a higher number of hydroxyl groups is more than 10 times higher than that of PRP-1. Polymers PRP-1 and PRP-2 can be used for non-homogeneous catalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion, and PRP-2 exhibits higher conversion. This work shows that the functionalized pillar[n]arene has a potential application in organic porous polymers.

Abstract:The recent progress in pillar[n]arene-assisted/participated carbon nanotube hybrid materials were initially summarized and discussed. The molecular structure of pillar[n]arene could serve different roles in the fabrication of attractive carbon nanotube-based materials. Firstly, pillar[n]arene has the ability to provide the structural basis for enlarging the cylindrical pillar-like architecture by forming one-dimensional, rigid, tubular, oligomeric/polymeric structures with aromatic moieties as the linker, or forming spatially "closed", channel-like, flexible structures by perfunctionalizing with peptides and with intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Interestingly, such pillar[n]arene-based carbon nanotube-resembling structures were used as porous materials for the adsorption and separation of gas and toxic pollutants, as well as for artificial water channels and membranes. In addition to the art of organic synthesis, self-assembly based on pillar[n]arene, such as self-assembled amphiphilic molecules, is also used to promote and control the dispersion behavior of carbon nanotubes in solution. Furthermore, functionalized pillar[n]arene derivatives integrated carbon nanotubes to prepare advanced hybrid materials through supramolecular interactions, which could also incorporate various compositions such as Ag and Au nanoparticles for catalysis and sensing.
