Abstract:In this work, one-pot synthesis of biofuel-valerolactone (GVL) and valeric acid (VA) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) are highly selectively produced on a series of robust Pd-nanoparticle catalysts. These fine Pd nanoparticles are controllably synthesized and confined in the mesoporous channel of MCM-41-derived supports via a green solvent CO2-assited method. A combination analysis tools are used to study physical properties and elucidate the relationship between the structure and performances. The catalytic results display 5 wt% Pd/AlMCM-41 exhibits the best performances of 88.5% GVL yield at the perfect conversion of LA. Moreover, without the isolation of GVL intermediate, it can also efficiently catalyze the one-pot conversion of LA to VA with 45.1% yield. Besides, Pd-nanoparticle catalysts maintain stable structure and good catalytic performances over several runs.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass is an abundant and renewable resource of carbon that allows the production of versatile and viable chemicals and fuels.Various processes have been developed for the conversion of biomass and its derivatives into platform molecules.Among these molecules, γ-valerolactone (GVL) is widely used because of its high stability, low toxicity and low volatility.GVL is an ideal precursor for the production of fuels and value-added chemicals.Up to now, various catalysts and reaction systems have been developed for the production of GVL from biomass, and many processes for the conversion GVL into fuels and chemicals have also been reported.In this paper, the different feedstocks including levulinic acid (LA), levulinate esters and other compounds for the production of GVL, as well as the catalytic systems including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of LA to GVL using H 2 gas or formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source are summarized.The conversion of GVL into fuels, chemicals and polymers is reviewed.

Abstract:Biomass, the only renewable resources of fixed carbon, shows great potential to ease the pressure on fossil energy crisis. In recent years, conversion of carbohydrate biomass into value-added products has been vastly reported. Gamma (gamma)-valerolactone (GVL), which is one of the platform chemicals, has been extensively used in industrial production. Recent trends proposed an eco-friendly processing using water and biomass-derived materials as hydrogen sources instead of high-pressure and high-purity gaseous hydrogen, avoiding storage, transportation and operation risk in the production. This review summarizes the progress in GVL production from carbohydrate biomass and highlights the novel green approach by using green reductants and non-noble-metal catalysts.

Abstract:Biomass has been identified as the ultimate sustainable resource for all carbon‐based consumer products of the chemical industries in the future. Its catalytic conversion leads to the formation of various platform chemicals that could partially or even fully replace the fossil‐based building blocks that have been currently used in synthetic chemical processes. Among these compounds, levulinic acid (LA) has been recognized as a member of the "Top Value Added Chemicals from Biomass" and has attracted significant attention since the seminal paper reported by Werpy and Petersen in 2004. This review summarizes the properties, recent advances, and developments in the chemistry of levulinic acid. The production of LA from both plant and animal‐based carbohydrate feedstocks via 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural or furfuryl alcohol is discussed from a mechanistic perspective, highlighting intrinsic molecular‐level limitations to LA formation. The efficiencies of recently developed catalytic systems are also summarized and compared. Furthermore, the conversion of LA into high‐value‐added downstream chemicals, including its role in the synthesis of complex molecular structures, is overviewed. This section discussed the reactions of LA in the points of view of its various transformations on carbonyl‐, carboxy‐, methyl‐, and methylene functional groups. The reactions of these functionalities with C‐ ,N‐, O‐, and S‐nucleophiles, alcohols, amines, organometallic reagents, oxygen etc. were thematically summarized. Our review also outlooks to highlight the challenges and opportunities associated with the extensive research area of organic chemistry of levulinic acid.

Abstract:Abstract: Recently, levulinic acid as an important bio-based platform compound has attracted wide attention, and its potential application value is very high. This article focuses on chem-catalytic produced ethyl levulinate (EL) from biomass-derived carbohydrates (C6 carbohydrates) via multiple reaction pathways, which has an energy density comparable to gasoline and has great potential as a fuel additive. This review focuses on recent examples of the synthesis of EL from various materials using homogenous or heterogeneous catalysts. Special emphasis is placed on the understanding of the reaction mechanism and pathways. This review also summarizes the future opportunities and challenges associated with the applications of EL as a fuel additive and in other fields.

Abstract:Abstract Catalytic coupling of biomass‐based molecules to value‐added chemical intermediates is an interesting area in biomass research. Arylated γ‐valerolactones (Agvls), promising pharmaceutical intermediates that have significant biological activity, are primarily synthesized currently through petro‐route. In this paper, we report successful biomass‐based synthesis of Agvls using levulinic acid (LA) and oxygen or sulphur‐ substituted aromatics over H‐β zeolite as catalyst under solvent‐free conditions. Under optimized condition, LA and anisole render 90 % conversion of former with 82 % yield of para‐substituted γ‐lactone. C−C bond formation followed by intra‐molecular esterification is witnessed in the course of the reaction, which is highly chemo‐ and regioselective. Though catalyst deactivated while reuse due to deposition of organic carbon moieties as deduced from several physicochemical techniques, it could be regenerated by simple calcination.

Abstract:Levulinic acid (LA) is acknowledged one of the most promising biomass-derived platform molecules and can be transformed into various value-added chemicals. Here, we report a new reaction process for the valorization of LA derivatives under transition-metal-free condition. The protocol combined with the conversion of the levulinate to tosylhydrazone and base promoted arylation, acylation, and etherification cross-coupling. Moreover, our method was applied to synthesize three biologically active molecules, rac-curcumene, rac-xanthorrhizol and rac-4,7-dimethyl-l-tetralone. This reaction discloses a new avenue for the high-value utilization of platform molecules.

Abstract:The distinct physicochemical properties and renewable origin of gamma-valerolactone (GVL) have provided opportunities for diversifying its applications, particularly as a green solvent, excellent fuel additive, and precursor to valuable chemicals. Among the related publications found in the SCOPUS database (≈172 in the last 10 years), we focused our effort to review the conversion of levulinic acid (LA) to GVL over non-noble metal catalysts and the corresponding mechanisms (≈30 publications) as well as the applications of GVL as a solvent, fuel additive, and platform chemical (≈30 publications) mostly in the last five years (some preceding publications have also been included due to their relevance and importance in the field). The use of non-noble metals (e.g., Cu and Zr) presents a greener route of GVL synthesis than the conventional practice employing noble metals (e.g., Pd and Ru), in view of their higher abundance and milder reaction conditions needed (e.g., low pressure and temperature without H2 involved). The significance of the catalyst characteristics in promoting catalytic transfer hydrogenation of LA to GVL is critically discussed. Structural features and acid-base properties are found to influence the activity and selectivity of catalysts. Furthermore, metal leaching in the presence of water in catalytic systems is an important issue, resulting in catalyst deactivation. Various endeavors for developing catalysts using well-dispersed metal particles along with a combination of Lewis acid and base sites are suggested for efficiently synthesizing GVL from LA.

Abstract:This review sheds light on the catalytic valorisation of agroforestry biomass through levulinic acid and formic acid towards γ-valerolactone and other higher-value chemicals. γ-Valerolactone is produced by the hydrogenation of levulinic acid, which can be achieved through an internal hydrogen transfer reaction with formic acid in the presence of catalyst. By reviewing corresponding catalysts, the paper underlines the most efficient steps constituting an integrated sustainable process that eliminates the need for external H 2 sources while producing biofuels as an alternative energy source. Furthermore, the review emphasizes the role of catalysts in the hydrogenation of levulinic acid, with special focus on heterogeneous catalysts. The authors highlighted the dual role of different catalysts by comparing their activity, morphology, electronic structure, synergetic relation between support and doped species, as well as their deactivation and recyclability. Acknowledging the need for green and sustainable H 2 production, the review extends to cover the role of photo catalysis in dissociating H 2 -donor solvents for reducing levulinic acid into γ-valerolactone under mild temperatures. To wrap up, the critical discussion presented enables readers to hone their knowledge about different schools and emphasizes research gaps emerging from experimental work. The review concludes with a comprehensive table summarizing the recent catalysts reported between the years 2017–2021.

Abstract:Levulinic acid (LA) was discovered in 1875 by heating candy with concentrated acid. Since then, it has been generated in a variety of ways from commercial sugars and their products in-cluding glucose, fructose, cellulose, 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (5-HMF), maleic anhydride and furfuryl alcohol. However, the concern of food security has led to search for sustainable feedstock for the production of LA such as biomass. Although the use of biomass as substrate for LA synthesis offer various advantages, however, the shift to a bioeconomy remains difficult due to the several contributing variables that must be addressed, as detailed in this review. Various catalysts, including homogeneous, heterogeneous, and ionic liquids, have been employed in the development of an ecologically acceptable and lucrative method for producing LA from biomass. This study examines the literature on LA production from 1875 to 2021, what has been accomplished, and what ongoing obstacles exist.

Abstract:The direct production of value‐added chemicals from biomass via multiple conversion processes with a sole renewable solid catalyst is promising for carbon‐neutral development while challenging. Herein, a series of novel bioresourced organic‐inorganic hybrid materials were synthesized from bio‐based ascorbic acid (Vc), zirconium chloride (ZrCl4) and p‐toluenesulfonic acid (p‐TSA) through a facile solvothermal process. The as‐prepared Zr‐Vc‐3 catalyst with Vc, ZrCl4, and p‐TSA in the 1:1:0.5 molar ratio displayed outstanding performance in direct furfural‐to‐γ‐valerolactone (GVL) transformation, giving an ultrahigh GVL yield of 76.2%, with an ideal activation energy (55.46 kJ mol–1), outperforming state‐of‐the‐art catalysts. The superior performance of Zr‐Vc‐3 could be ascribed to its good reusability, relatively large pore size, suitable amount of acid‐base sites, and good hydrophobicity. Mechanistic studies unveiled that Lewis acid‐base sites facilitate the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and isopropyl levulinate (IPL) to 4‐hydroxypentanoate via transfer hydrogenation process, while Brønsted acid sites are instrumental in the ring‐opening of furfuryl alcohol to IPL and the lactonization of 4‐hydroxypentanoate to GVL, overall contributing to the multi‐step conversion of furfural to GVL in a single pot. This work provides a valuable reference for precisely constructing bio‐based OIHMs with tailored functionalities for one‐pot valorization of biomass feedstocks via tandem reactions.

Abstract:The downstream product transformation of lignin depolymerization is of great interest in the production of high-value aromatic chemicals. However, this transformation is often impeded by chemical oxidation under harsh reaction conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that hypohalites generated in situ by the vanadium-containing chloroperoxidase from Curvularia inaequalis (CiVCPO) can halogenate various electron-rich and electron-poor phenol and phenolic acid substrates. Specifically, CiVCPO enabled decarboxylative halogenation, deformylative halogenation, halogenation, and direct oxidation reactions. The versatile transformation routes for the valorization of phenolic compounds showed up to 99% conversion and 99% selectivity, with a turnover number of 60,700 and a turnover frequency of 60 s(-1 )for CiVCPO. This study potentially expands the biocatalytic toolbox for lignin valorization.

Abstract:The world is facing grand and ever-increasing pressures on energy and environmental issues. Using carbon-neutral biomass to prepare monomers such as dicarboxylic acids for degradable polymers is of great significance and an urgent but challenging task. Herein, we report a catalytic route for the synthesis of 2-hydroxy-2-methylsuccinic acid, an excellent monomer: e.g., it is able to remarkably enhance the comprehensive properties of polybutylene succinate as shown herein. By catalytic aerobic oxidation of levulinic acid, a bulk platform chemical derived from lignocellulose, the target product was obtained with a very high selectivity of up to ca. 95%. The mild reaction conditions below 100 °C in water and the low-cost reusable heterogeneous catalyst further make the process highly attractive for applications. This process was also found to be effective for the conversion of homologues of levulinic acid to dicarboxylic acids. We studied the C–C bond rearrangement and the roles of catalysts in the reaction that are highly likely involved in a superoxide anion radical mechanism. This study may provide inspiration for the synthesis of bio-based dicarboxylic acids via alternative routes.

Abstract:Levulinic acid (LA), a class of important chemical intermediates and new energy chemicals, has been considered as the top-12 platform compound converted from biomass resources. Substantial progresses on the conversion of lignocellulose biomass to LA and the further conversion of LA to high value downstream chemicals have been continuously achieved recently. This review summarized the preparation and the separation processes of LA firstly, and emphatically discussed the catalytic system for LA conversion to valuable downstream products including levulinate esters, 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (MTHF), Gamma-valerolactone (GVL), 5-aminolevulinic acid (DALA) and diphenolic acid (DPA). Abstract:Levulinic acid (LEV) has been identified as a key building block chemical produced entirely from biomass. Its derivatives can be used to synthesize a variety of value-added chemicals, such as 2-butanone, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, and so on. LEV has carbonyl and carboxyl functional groups, which makes it flexible, diverse, and unique during drug synthesis. It also reduces the cost of drug synthesis and makes the reaction cleaner and, not the least, has untapped potential in the field of medicine. This article reviews the application of LEV in cancer treatment, medical materials, and other medical fields. Overall, LEV can be used in the following ways: (1) Used as a raw material to directly synthesize drugs; (2) Used to synthesize related derivatives, which can be more specifically used in drug synthesis, and derivatives can achieve the corresponding release of drugs, such as paclitaxel (PTX)- LEV, polymer-betulinic acid (BA)-LEV after amidation; (3) It can modify chemical reagents or act as linkers to connect pharmaceutical reagents with carriers to form pharmaceutical intermediates, a pharmaceutical intermediate skeleton, and so on. (4) It can acylate and esterify to form: acetylpropionate and levulinyl, the indole, pyridazine, and other medicinally active functional groups can be synthesized by a long chain, which can reduce the cost of drug synthesis and simplify the tedious synthesis steps. (5) To form the protective group of levulinic acid, the hydroxyl or carboxyl position is first protected, and then the protective group is removed after the corresponding reaction, in order to participate in drug synthesis.

A halogen-free synthetic route to δ-aminolevulinic acid is reported alongside a further exploration of KVL in the synthesis of important 5-hyrdoxy levulinic acid esters. Flow chemistry approaches have been implemented for the synthesis of short- and long-chain esters that may find applications as biorenewable fuel oxygenates and lubricants, respectively.
