Abstract:Controlling the flow of light on-chip is of great importance for quantum computing and optical signal processing. In this paper, we present a theoretical study to reveal the underlying physics of how to effectively trap, store and release a signal pulse, and eventually break the delay-bandwidth limit, based on controllable EIT-like effect in dynamically tuned standing-wave cascaded nanocavities. Using this mechanism, we design a compact silicon photonic crystal system with long storing time and a delay-bandwidth product over 460, which is about two orders of magnitude greater than the reported results obtained by other methods based on static resonator system, and the trapped signal pulse can be released on demand.

Abstract:We present a simple yet effective approach to realize a movable nanocavity based on dynamically tuning the local refractive index of a photonic crystal (PC) waveguide. Using this movable cavity, we demonstrate that it can trap, store, and transfer signal photons. The approach proposed here provides a new way for manipulating photons.

Abstract:Although the approach of forming an ultrahigh-Q nanocavity via local refractive index tuning in a PC waveguide was proposed a decade ago, it has not yet been employed to realize a moveable ultrahigh-Q nanocavity, thereby the dynamic physics related to a moving resonator remain unknown. Here we demonstrate that a dynamicallyformed cavity is essentially moveable, so that we can use this nanocavity to trap, store, and transfer signal photons, enabling free photon control. For a high cavity moving speed, we find the trapped signal energy will radiate out of the moving cavity. We think this interesting phenomenon originates from Doppler-effect-induced resonant frequency split in a moving resonator and the accompanied change of energy capacity. In addition, we present an analytical model to reveal why and how the trapping and storing processes are accompanied by significant spectral bandwidth compression and dynamic wavelength conversion, which are critical for achieving dynamic ultrahigh-Q nanocavity. This approach may find application in photon memories, quantum computing, and controllable light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Owing to the Auger recombination effect, multiple excitons (MEs) in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) are dissipated nonradiatively at the sub-nanosecond time scale, which sets a stringent limit on the time window within which one can operate with them. Here, we show that this issue can be resolved by utilizing an intrinsic energy transfer system in CdSe NCs, where MEs created in the donor quantized states can be effectively extracted to the acceptor trap states. This was evidenced by the step-like increase in the intensity and the apparent decrease in the rise time of the trap-state photoluminescence with the elevated laser excitation power. With the radiative lifetime being tens of nanoseconds for the trap states, extended storage of MEs has been achieved and marks a crucial step towards flexible manipulations of their optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:Photonic devices based on a high-Q cavity are commonly constrained by narrow operation bandwidth, slow charging, and releasing speed. Here, we analytically and numerically demonstrate that this limitation can be broken via dynamically tuning the Q factors of a single nanocavity and driving controllable photonic transitions between a low-Q cavity mode and an ultrahigh-Q mode by temporal refractive index modulations inside a multimode cavity. During this dynamic process, the bandwidth of signal light is also reversibly compressed. As a result, the fundamental link between the photon lifetime and the operation bandwidth is broken, and a delay-bandwidth product of ∼76 is achieved, which is far greater than that of the usual optical resonator systems. This approach may pave the way for dynamic control of on-chip all-optical information processing.

Abstract:Arbitrary control of photon flow is of fundamental significance in many applications of light. Here, we propose a new approach that can trap, store, and move the signal photons to arbitrary desired place, just like what optical tweezers do on micro particles. In addition, the trapped photons can also be released at a given direction. The mechanism is based on an ultrahigh-Q nanocavity formed by two dynamically-generated potential barriers in a photonic crystal (PC) waveguide. Different from the traditional fixed ultrahigh-Q nanocavities, this new-type cavity can be formed instantaneously at any moment and any position in a PC waveguide, and is completely movable while keeps ultrahigh Q factor simultaneously. These novel features make controlling the flow of light like an optical tweezer possible, and open up new opportunities for dynamic light–matter interactions and on-chip optical signal processing.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a scheme to realize electrically controlled quantum memories in a cavity and electro-mechanical system. By assisting with a constant weak optical field into the high-Q cavity, the electrical manipulations of the dark-state polariton and the group velocity of light are derived. The storage and retrieval of the photon state can be realized and optimized by sending the optimal voltage waveforms in the electric circuit, respectively. In addition, the storage efficiency and the experimental feasibility are discussed. The cavity-induced quantum memory scheme driven by the electric field here has potential applications in future integration and miniaturization of optical information processing devices.
Photon storage with sub-nanosecond readout rise time in coupled quantum wells

Abstract:Photon storage with 250 ps rise time of the readout optical signal was implemented with indirect excitons in coupled quantum well nanostructures (CQW). The storage and release of photons was controlled by the gate voltage pulse. The transient processes in the CQW were studied by measuring the kinetics of the exciton emission spectra after application of the gate voltage pulse. Strong oscillations of the exciton emission wavelength were observed in the transient regime when the gate voltage pulse was carried over an ordinary wire. Gating the CQW via an impedance-matched broadband transmission line has lead to an effective elimination of these transient oscillations and expedient switching of the exciton energy to a required value within a short time, much shorter than the exciton lifetime.

Trapped atoms and superradiance on an integrated nanophotonic microring circuit

Abstract:Interfacing cold atoms with integrated nanophotonic devices could offer new paradigms for engineering atom-light interactions and provide a potentially scalable route for quantum sensing, metrology, and quantum information processing. However, it remains a challenging task to efficiently trap a large ensemble of cold atoms on an integrated nanophotonic circuit. Here, we demonstrate direct loading of an ensemble of up to 70 atoms into an optical microtrap on a nanophotonic microring circuit. Efficient trap loading is achieved by employing degenerate Raman-sideband cooling in the microtrap, where a built-in spin-motion coupling arises directly from the vector light shift of the evanescent field potential on a microring. Atoms are cooled into the trap via optical pumping with a single free space beam. We have achieved a trap lifetime approaching 700ms under continuous cooling. We show that the trapped atoms display large cooperative coupling and superradiant decay into a whispering-gallery mode of the microring resonator, holding promise for explorations of new collective effects. Our technique can be extended to trapping a large ensemble of cold atoms on nanophotonic circuits for various quantum applications.

Abstract:Trapped atoms near nanophotonics form an exciting platform for bottom-up synthesis of strongly interacting quantum matter. The ability to induce tunable long-range atom-atom interactions with photons presents an opportunity to explore many-body physics and quantum optics. Here we implement a configurable optical tweezer array over a planar photonic circuit tailored for cold atom integration and control for trapping and high-fidelity imaging of one or more atoms in an array directly on a photonic structure. Using an optical conveyor belt formed by a moving optical lattice within a tweezer potential, we show that single atoms can be transported from a reservoir into close proximity of a photonic interface, potentially allowing for the synthesis of a defect-free atom-nanophotonic hybrid lattice. Our experimental platform can be integrated with generic planar photonic waveguides and resonators, promising a pathway towards on-chip many-body quantum optics and applications in quantum technology.

Abstract:A quantum memory that can store quantum states faithfully and retrieve them on demand has wide applications in quantum information science. An efficient quantum memory in the microwave regime working alongside quantum processors based on superconducting quantum circuits may serve as an important architecture for quantum computers. Here we realize on-demand storage and retrieval of weak coherent microwave photon pulses at the single-photon level. We implement a superconducting multi-resonator quantum memory which is composed of a set of frequency-tunable coplanar transmission line (CPW) resonators. By dynamically tuning the resonant frequencies of the resonators, we achieve tunable memory bandwidth from 10 MHz to 55 MHz, with an overall storage efficiency up to 12 % with well preserved phase coherence. We further demonstrate on-demand storage and retrieval of a time-bin flying qubit. This result opens up a prospect to integrate our chip-based quantum memory with the state-of-the-art superconducting quantum circuit technology for quantum information processing.

Optomechanically induced optical trapping system based on photonic crystal cavities

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be a valuable experimental technique for precisely controlling small dielectric objects. However, due to their very nature, conventional optical traps are diffraction limited and require high intensities to confine the dielectric objects. In this work, we propose a novel optical trap based on dielectric photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which overcomes the limitations of conventional optical traps by significant factors. This is achieved by exploiting an optomechanically induced backaction mechanism between a dielectric nanoparticle and the cavities. We perform numerical simulations to show that our trap can fully levitate a submicron-scale dielectric particle with a trap width as narrow as 56 nm. It allows for achieving a high trap stiffness, therefore, a high Q-frequency product for the particle's motion while reducing the optical absorption by a factor of 43 compared to the cases for conventional optical tweezers. Moreover, we show that multiple laser tones can be used further to create a complex, dynamic potential landscape with feature sizes well below the diffraction limit. The presented optical trapping system offers new opportunities for precision sensing and fundamental quantum experiments based on levitated particles.

Abstract:Light trapping is a constant pursuit in photonics because of its importance in science and technology. Many mechanisms have been explored, including the use of mirrors made of materials or structures that forbid outgoing waves, and bound states in the continuum that are mirror-less but based on topology. Here we report a compound method, combining lateral mirrors and bound states in the continuum in a cooperative way, to achieve a class of on-chip optical cavities that have high quality factors and small modal volumes. Specifically, light is trapped in the transverse direction by the photonic band gap of the lateral hetero-structure and confined in the vertical direction by the constellation of multiple bound states in the continuum. As a result, unlike most bound states in the continuum found in photonic crystal slabs that are de-localized Bloch modes, we achieve light-trapping in all three dimensions and experimentally demonstrate quality factors as high as Q=1.09×106 and modal volumes as low as V=17.74(λ0/n)3 in the telecommunication regime. We further prove the robustness of our method through the statistical study of multiple fabricated devices. Our work provides a new method of light trapping, which can find potential applications in photonic integration, nonlinear optics and quantum computing.

Abstract:Solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics systems will form scalable nodes of future quantum networks, allowing the storage, processing and retrieval of quantum bits, where a real-time control of the radiative interaction in the cavity is required to achieve high efficiency. We demonstrate here the dynamic molding of the vacuum field in a coupled-cavity system to achieve the ultrafast nonlocal modulation of spontaneous emission of quantum dots in photonic crystal cavities, on a timescale of ~200 ps, much faster than their natural radiative lifetimes. This opens the way to the ultrafast control of semiconductor-based cavity quantum electrodynamics systems for application in quantum interfaces and to a new class of ultrafast lasers based on nano-photonic cavities.

Abstract:We report on the trapping of 14keV photons in periods of 1.11–1.67ps by the 12 4 0 backdiffraction in two- and multiplate silicon single-crystal cavities of a few hundred micrometer size. The formation of standing waves inside the cavities ensures better coherence for the x rays. We anticipate that the transmitted x rays through this type of cavities can be used as a quasicoherent x-ray source for probing the dynamic structures of solids, liquids, and biological substances.
