Abstract:Controlling the flow of light on-chip is of great importance for quantum computing and optical signal processing. In this paper, we present a theoretical study to reveal the underlying physics of how to effectively trap, store and release a signal pulse, and eventually break the delay-bandwidth limit, based on controllable EIT-like effect in dynamically tuned standing-wave cascaded nanocavities. Using this mechanism, we design a compact silicon photonic crystal system with long storing time and a delay-bandwidth product over 460, which is about two orders of magnitude greater than the reported results obtained by other methods based on static resonator system, and the trapped signal pulse can be released on demand.

Abstract:Abstract We analytically and numerically investigate a signal light storing mechanism based on controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. We demonstrate that the isolation between the waveguide and the cavities cannot be achieved instantly as soon as the two cavities are tuned into resonance, no matter the index tuning rate is ultrafast or slow. We also investigate the temporal evolution features of the intracavity energy when the pulse during time is prolonged. We find many periodical oscillations of the trapped energy in both cavities, and they are entirely complementary. Our analysis shows that the adiabatic wavelength conversion in both cavities and a phase difference “π” between them play critical rules for this phenomenon.

Abstract:We present a simple yet effective approach to realize a movable nanocavity based on dynamically tuning the local refractive index of a photonic crystal (PC) waveguide. Using this movable cavity, we demonstrate that it can trap, store, and transfer signal photons. The approach proposed here provides a new way for manipulating photons.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

Abstract:Photonic devices based on a high-Q cavity are commonly constrained by narrow operation bandwidth, slow charging, and releasing speed. Here, we analytically and numerically demonstrate that this limitation can be broken via dynamically tuning the Q factors of a single nanocavity and driving controllable photonic transitions between a low-Q cavity mode and an ultrahigh-Q mode by temporal refractive index modulations inside a multimode cavity. During this dynamic process, the bandwidth of signal light is also reversibly compressed. As a result, the fundamental link between the photon lifetime and the operation bandwidth is broken, and a delay-bandwidth product of ∼76 is achieved, which is far greater than that of the usual optical resonator systems. This approach may pave the way for dynamic control of on-chip all-optical information processing.

Abstract:Wavelength-scale, high Q-factor photonic crystal cavities have emerged as a platform of choice for on-chip manipulation of optical signals, with applications ranging from low-power optical signal processing and cavity quantum electrodynamics, to biochemical sensing. Many of these applications, however, are limited by the fabrication tolerances and the inability to precisely control the resonant wavelength of fabricated structures. Various techniques for post-fabrication wavelength trimming and dynamical wavelength control -- using, for example, thermal effects, free carrier injection, low temperature gas condensation, and immersion in fluids -- have been explored. However, these methods are often limited by small tuning ranges, high power consumption, or the inability to tune continuously or reversibly. In this letter, by combining nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) and nanophotonics, we demonstrate reconfigurable photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that can be continuously and dynamically tuned using electrostatic forces. A tuning of ~10 nm has been demonstrated with less than 6 V of external bias and negligible steady-state power consumption.

Abstract:Interest in photonic crystal nanocavities is fueled by advances in device performance, particularly in the development of low-threshold laser sources. Effective electrical control of high-performance photonic crystal lasers has thus far remained elusive due to the complexities associated with current injection into cavities. A fabrication procedure for electrically pumping photonic crystal membrane devices using a lateral p-i-n junction has been developed and is described in this study. We have demonstrated electrically pumped lasing in our junctions with a threshold of 181 nA at 50 K—the lowest threshold ever demonstrated in an electrically pumped laser. At room temperature, we find that our devices behave as single-mode light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which when directly modulated, have an ultrafast electrical response up to 10 GHz corresponding to less than 1 fJ/bit energy operation—the lowest for any optical transmitter. In addition, we have demonstrated electrical pumping of photonic crystal nanobeam LEDs, and have built fiber taper coupled electro-optic modulators. Fiber-coupled photodetectors based on two-photon absorption are also demonstrated as well as multiply integrated components that can be independently electrically controlled. The presented electrical injection platform is a major step forward in providing practical low power and integrable devices for on-chip photonics.

Abstract:Solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics systems will form scalable nodes of future quantum networks, allowing the storage, processing and retrieval of quantum bits, where a real-time control of the radiative interaction in the cavity is required to achieve high efficiency. We demonstrate here the dynamic molding of the vacuum field in a coupled-cavity system to achieve the ultrafast nonlocal modulation of spontaneous emission of quantum dots in photonic crystal cavities, on a timescale of ~200 ps, much faster than their natural radiative lifetimes. This opens the way to the ultrafast control of semiconductor-based cavity quantum electrodynamics systems for application in quantum interfaces and to a new class of ultrafast lasers based on nano-photonic cavities.

Abstract:We propose a numerical investigation of slow light rainbow trapping and releasing in a tapered photonic crystal waveguide which is formed by linearly modifying the structural parameters in low-symmetric photonic crystals. Through dispersion analysis and numerical simulations, the electromagnetic waves of different frequencies in a normalized bandwith of ∼5% can be trapped at different positions, as called "rainbow trapping". Moreover, the tapered photonic crystal waveguide is created on polystyrene subtract, of which refractive index can be adjusted by tuning the external voltage based on electro-optic effect. Therefore, when the applied voltage is properly modulated, the trapped wave will be captured in different positions even released. The structure has broad application prospects in optical switch, wavelength-division multiplexing, and other optical communication devices.

Abstract:Up to now it remains challenging to couple photons from a circularly polarized emitter into a photonic structure to simultaneously realize strong photon-emitter interaction and unidirectional propagation locked by local helicity of the optical mode at the nanoscale. In this paper we propose a unique approach that combines a photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure to create nanocavities with both strong local-field intensity and high helicity. In this system the rate of circularly polarized photons emitting into the photonic crystal waveguide reaches 148(gamma 0), which is one order of magnitude larger than that without the nanoparticle, and in the ultranarrow band-edge mode the linewidth of Rabi splitting spectra is about one-tenth of that with the nanoparticle only, both with approximate to 95% of photons propagating unidirectionally along the nanoscale waveguide. We suggest that our paper establishes a nanophotonic interface of chiral quantum electrodynamics for on-chip nonreciprocal quantum light sources, quantum circuits, and scalable quantum networks.

Abstract:We demonstrate the independent lithographic mode tuning by changing the holes around the defect area of photonic crystal nanocavities containing light-emitting quantum dots. The data have been verified by the three-dimensional finite-difference time domain simulation. These findings can be applied to realize encoded particles with large coding capability (>105) for biosensing.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities made in broadband luminescent material offer attractive possibilities for flexible active devices. The luminescence enables the cavity to operate as an autonomous entity. New applications of this property are demonstrated for cavities made in the InGaAsP underetched semiconductor membrane with embedded InAs Quantum Dots that emit in the range of 1400-1600 nm.Planar photonic crystal membrane nanocavities were released from the parent chip by mechanical nanomanipulation. The released cavity particle could be bonded on an arbitrary surface, which was exploited to make a novel fiber-optic tip sensor with a PhC cavity attached to the tip.A single mode from a short cavity is shown to couple simultaneously to at least three cavity modes of a long cavity, as concluded from level anticrossing data when the small cavity was photothermally tuned.Reconfigurable and movable cavities were created by locally varying the infiltration status by liquid oil near a PhC waveguide or defect cavity. Liquid was displaced locally on a micron scale using capillary force effects or laser-induced evaporation and condensation phenomena.

Abstract:Adiabatic frequency shifting is demonstrated by tuning an ultrahigh-Q photonic crystal nanocavity dynamically. By resolving the output temporally and spectrally, we showed that the frequency of the light in the cavity follows the cavity resonance shift and remains in a single mode throughout the process. This confirmed unambiguously that the frequency shift results from the adiabatic tuning. We have employed this process to achieve the dynamic release of a trapped light from an ultrahigh-Q cavity and thus generate a short pulse. This approach provides a simple way of tuning Q dynamically.

Abstract:Storing and delaying optical signals is key for signal processing and control in many microwave photonics, quantum and classical communication systems. Hence, scientists proposed and demonstrated a multitude of approaches, from slow-light in photonic crystals, ring resonators, to optomechanical and stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) based schemes [1]. Yet, a scheme that offers tunable, long delays in a small form factor is still elusive. Quasi-light storage (QLS) is an optical pulse storage method that has been used to achieve long, dynamically adjustable delay times in optical fibres by utilising SBS to spectrally sample a signal with an optical frequency comb [2]. Relying on long lengths of fibre, however, limits Size, Weight, and Power consumption (SWaP) and induces latency much larger than the storage time. Here, we demonstrate QLS on a photonic chip and achieve delay times an order of magnitude larger than the optical chip transit time. We experimentally show that the SBS interaction between the signal and the pump on the chip creates a single acoustic wave that stores the optical pulse information, and we investigate the temporal dynamics of this storage mechanism. We demonstrate that the repeated interaction of the acoustic wave and optical pump pulses reinforces the acoustic wave, and storage times an order of magnitude larger than the intrinsic acoustic lifetime can be achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a hybrid three-dimensional photoniccrystal cavity with an embedded quantum dot, and investigate the dynamics of the cavity-quantum dot system. The general procedure of modelling such a practical structure is presented, where the master equation is solved on the basis of the parameters obtained from defect mode analyses. According to our study, this structure can be engineered to achieve a nearly deterministic single photon gun. The excitation power is found to have an optimal value in terms of photon emission efficiency. Large excitation pulse duration is believed to cause a spurious peak in the second-order coherence measurement.
