Abstract:Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) emitted from the industrial fabrication process and coatings, pharmacy, and incineration are toxic to the environment and humans. Catalytic combustion can convert CVOCs into CO2, H2O, and HCl/Cl2 at lower temperatures; as such, it is regarded as a promising method at present. However, it still causes serious secondary pollutants because of the involved toxic polychlorinated byproducts that are discharged in the tail gas or deposited on the catalyst surface or reaction device. This is because the individual combustion process cannot completely remove the dissociated chlorine to form HCl; therefore, it can react again with the catalyst or byproducts, resulting in the deactivation of the catalyst and the formation and accumulation of polychlorinated byproducts, including dioxin. The industrial catalytic hydro-dechlorination (HDC) process is more concerned with formation of HCl and acquisition of desired products, which is expected to achieve a possible result of complete elimination of industrial CVOC gas without secondary byproduct pollution via combination of the combustion process and HDC process. Herein, we highlight the reaction characteristics of combustion and HDC methods against CVOCs and provide a perspective on the need for accomplishing the elimination and recycling of industrial CVOCs in the design of possible combined processing methods.

Abstract:With the economic growth, the environmental pollution is still a challenge for sustainable development all over the world.In order to prevent, reduce and remediate the various environmental problems, it is crucial to develop innovative and efficient materials to remove and decompose pollutants from air or water in that the efficient adsorbents and catalysts are playing an important role in the process of physical and chemical reactions.Therefore, the editors of FESE proposed to publish one special issue, and report the original research and review papers about advanced adsorbents and catalysts that are potentially or widely applied in environmental protection.The contents of the articles include the preparation and application of environmental adsorbents and catalysts, which are mainly applied in air pollution control and wastewater treatment.The scientific topics of the articles include exhaust gas purification (such as DeNO x catalysis from mobile and stationary sources, catalytic oxidation of CO and VOC), the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from wastewater by some novel adsorbents and catalysts, indoor air quality improvement via photo-, plasma-and electro-catalysis for the removal of indoor air pollutants, and CO 2 capture using various adsorbents.We believe that the special issue will promote the information communication among leading researchers working on adsorbents and catalysts for controlling air pollution and improving water quality, and contribute to the well understanding between environmental catalysis/adsorption and environmental sciences.
Unveiling the secondary pollution in the catalytic elimination of chlorinated organics: The formation of dioxins

Abstract:Since the discovery of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in the process of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), a large number of researches have been conducted to reveal their formation mechanisms and emission characteristics. As one of national priority control pollutants, chlorinated organics are inclined to transfer into PCDD/Fs in the heterogeneously catalyzed process, which has been considered to be one of great challenges in environmental catalysis. However, so far direct evidences to support such a conversion process are insufficient, and the reaction mechanisms are lack of exploration. This study investigated the catalytic elimination of chlorobenzene (CBz) over a range of industrially applied active species including Pt, Ru, V, Ce and Mn oxides, and explored their reaction byproducts, chlorine adsorption/desorption behaviors and PCDD/F formations. We found that all of these species could generate the PCDD/Fs, amongst which, Mn species were the most active for PCDD/F formation. Approximately 140 ng I-TEQ g(-1) PCDD/Fs were detected on the Mn-CNT surface after ageing at 250 degrees C for 30 h. Even using the dichloromethane (DCM) as a precursor, significant PCDD/Fs were still detected. The Ru and V species were shown to generate much less polychlorinated byproducts and PCDD/ Fs, owning to their sufficiently high abilities in Cl desorption, which were through the semi-Deacon and Bronsted H reactions, respectively. Abstract:Anthropogenic climate and environmental changes increasingly threaten the sustainability of life on Earth, hindering the sustainable development of human societies. These detrimental ecological changes are driven by human activities that have elevated atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases and toxic substances, increased inorganic and organic pollutants in water bodies, and led to the accumulation of solid waste in soils. Over the next two to three decades, the impacts of climate change, water pollution, and soil contamination are expected to intensify, posing increasing risks to human health and global stability. Considering these trends, it is essential to implement robust mitigation and adaptation strategies. This paper analyzes environmental pollution problems from the perspectives of atmospheric, water, and soil contamination. It summarizes current research on heterogeneous catalysis for treating pollutants in gaseous, liquid, and solid phases, with an emphasis on the key challenges of applying these catalytic conversion technologies in cost-effective industrial settings. Finally, strategies for mitigating environmental pollutants via heterogeneous catalysis are discussed from the perspectives of material flow, energy flow, and data flow. This paper aims to offer scientific insights to enhance future research and practice in heterogeneous catalysis for environmental remediation.

Abstract:The great concern over the environmental impact of wastewaters has led to the designing of advanced treatment processes to upgrade conventional treatment plants and achieve a significant reduction of contaminants in receiving waters. In the present study we combined chemical and ecotoxicological analyses, aiming to evaluate the reduction of toxicity effects associated with the removal of micropollutants and to define the contribution of the detected compounds to the overall toxicity of the mixtures in a series of wastewater effluents collected from a secondary treatment (OUT 2) and from a tertiary activated carbon treatment (OUT 3) plant. The target compounds were selected after a screening procedure among pharmaceuticals, musk fragrances, and trace metals. The classical algal growth inhibition test was conducted on the original effluent samples and on different fractions obtained by solid‐phase extraction (SPE) treatment. A good accordance was found between the removal of toxicity (30%–80%) and organic compounds (70%–80%) after the tertiary treatment, suggesting its high efficiency to improve the wastewater quality. The discrepancy between the contribution to the overall toxicity of the nonadsorbable compounds (i.e., inorganic or very polar organic compounds) as experimentally measured by the SPE bioassays (18%–76%) and calculated by the concentration addition approach (>97%) could be mitigated by including the bioavailability correction in metal‐toxicity modeling of wastewater mixtures. For the organic compounds, the toxic equivalency method enabled us to quantify the portion of toxicity explained by the detected chemicals in both OUT 2 (82%–104%) and OUT 3 (5%–57%), validating the selection of the target molecules. Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology

Abstract:Organic pollutants are potential hazards for human health and are pivotal contributors to ecological imbalances. The spectrum of chemicals in research on organic pollutants has continually evolved, which is influenced by industrial advancements, scientific breakthroughs, and regulatory frameworks. A comprehensive analysis of 30 review articles on organic pollutants published during 2019-2023 in Critical Reviews in Environmental Science and Technology (CREST) provides good perspectives on the trajectory of organic pollutants in the environment. This synthesis delineates the recent advancements in two domains: (1) innovative monitoring technologies (sensor, extraction method, bio-indicator, and radioactive tracer); and (2) fate and transport, and risk assessment of organic pollutants. However, research on organic pollutants needs better monitoring techniques, matrix-related transformation methodologies, and realistic risk assessment tools. The development of novel strategies to monitor and manage organic pollutants, coupled with evaluations of ecosystem impacts under field conditions, is paramount.

Abstract:This study aims to address organic micropollutants in secondary effluents from municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by first identification of micropollutants in different treatment units, and second by evaluating an advanced treatment process for removals of micropollutants. In secondary effluents, 28 types of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), 5 types of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and 3 types of odorous compounds are detected with total concentrations of 513 ± 57.8 ng/L, 991 ± 36.5 ng/L, 553 ± 48.3 ng/L, respectively. An integrated process consisting of in-situ ozonation, ceramic membrane filtration (CMF) and biological active carbon (BAC) filtration is investigated in a pilot scale (1000 m3/d) for removal of micropollutants in secondary effluents. The total removal efficiencies of PPCPs, EDCs and odorous compounds are 98.5%, 95.4%, and 91.1%, respectively. Removal mechanisms of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and odorous compounds are discussed based on their physicochemical properties. The remarkable removal efficiencies of micropollutants by the pilot system is attributed to synergistic effects of combining ozonation, ceramic membrane filtration and BAC filtration. This study provides a cost-effective and robust technology with the capability of treating secondary effluents for reuse applications.

Abstract:In recent decades, the environmental protection and long-term sustainability have become the focus of attention due to the increasing pollution generated by the intense industrialization. To overcome these issues, environmental catalysis has increasingly been used to solve the negative impact of pollutants emission on the global environment and human health. Supported platinum-metal-group (PGM) materials are commonly utilized as the state-of-the-art catalysts to eliminate gaseous pollutants but large quantities of PGMs are required. By comparison, single-atom site catalysts (SACs) have attracted much attention in catalysis owing to their 100% atom efficiency and unique catalytic performances towards various reactions. Over the past decade, we have witnessed burgeoning interests of SACs in heterogeneous catalysis. However, to the best of our knowledge, the systematic summary and analysis of SACs in catalytic elimination of environmental pollutants has not yet been reported. In this paper, we summarize and discuss the environmental catalysis applications of SACs. Particular focus was paid to automotive and stationary emission control, including model reaction (CO oxidation, NO reduction and hydrocarbon oxidation), overall reaction (three-way catalytic and diesel oxidation reaction), elimination of volatile organic compounds (formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene), and removal/decomposition of other pollutants (Hg0 and SO3). Perspectives related to further challenges, directions and design strategies of single-atom site catalysts in environmental catalysis were also provided.
Identifying the evolution of primary oxidation mechanisms and pollutant degradation routes in the electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems

Abstract:Herein, electro-catalysis (EC) as the electron donor to accelerate the continuable Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycles in different inorganic peroxides (i.e., peroxymonosulfate (PMS), peroxydisulfate (PDS) and hydrogen peroxide (HP)) activation systems were established. These electro-cocatalytic Fenton-like systems exhibited an excellent degradation efficiency of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). A series of analytical and characterization methods including quenching experiments, probe experiments, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometry (EPR) were implemented to systematically sort out the source and yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS). A wide kind of ROS including hydroxyl radical ((OH)-O-center dot), singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), and sulfate radical (SO4 center dot- )(,) which contributed 38%, 37%, and 24% were produced in EC/Fe(III)/PMS system, respectively. (OH)-O-center dot was the dominant ROS in both EC/Fe(III)/ PDS and EC/Fe(III)/HP processes. According to the analysis of SMX degradation routes and biotoxicity, abundant degradation pathways were identified in EC/Fe(III)/PMS process and lower environmental impact was achieved in EC/Fe(III)/HP process. The diversiform ROS of EC/Fe(III)/PMS system makes it exhibit greater environmental adaptability in complex water matrixes and excellent low-energy consumption performance in many organic pollutants degradation. Continuous flow treatment experiments proved that the three systems have great sus-tainability and practical application prospect. This work provides a strong basis for constructing suitable systems to achieve different treatment requirements.

Abstract:S econdary air pollutants, originating from gaseous pollutants and primary particulate matter emitted by natural sources and human activities, undergo complex atmospheric chemical reactions and multiphase processes. Secondary gaseous pollutants represented by ozone and secondary particulate matter, including sulfates, nitrates, ammonium salts, and secondary organic aerosols, are formed in the atmosphere, affecting air quality and human health. This paper summarizes the formation pathways and mechanisms of important atmospheric secondary pollutants. Meanwhile, different secondary pollutants' toxicological effects and corresponding health risks are evaluated. Studies have shown that secondary pollutants are generally more toxic than primary ones. However, due to their diverse source and complex generation mechanism, the study of the toxicological effects of secondary pollutants is still in its early stages. Therefore, this paper first introduces the formation mechanism of secondary gaseous pollutants and focuses mainly on ozone's toxicological effects. In terms of particulate matter, secondary inorganic and organic particulate matters are summarized separately, then the contribution and toxicological effects of secondary components formed from primary carbonaceous aerosols are discussed. Finally, secondary pollutants generated in the indoor environment are briefly introduced. Overall, a comprehensive review of secondary air pollutants may shed light on the future toxicological and health effects research of secondary air pollutants.

The emission of these pollutants has led to a large decline in air quality in numerous regions around the world, which has ultimately led to concerns regarding their impact on human health and general well-being. Catalytic oxidation is regarded as one of the most promising strategies for VOC removal from industrial waste streams. This Review systematically documents the progresses and developments made in the understanding and design of heterogeneous catalysts for VOC oxidation over the past two decades. It addresses in detail how catalytic performance is often drastically affected by the pollutant sources and reaction conditions. It also highlights the primary routes for catalyst deactivation and discusses protocols for their subsequent reactivation. Kinetic models and proposed oxidation mechanisms for representative VOCs are also provided. Typical catalytic reactors and oxidizers for industrial VOC destruction are further discussed. We believe that this Review will provide a great foundation and reference point for future design and development in this field.

Abstract:With the rapid development of science and technology especially in the ICT industry all over the world, WEEE has been considered to be one of the most important waste streams during the last decade and will continue to be so in the future. WEEE contains valuable metals as well as potential environmental contaminants so recycling E-waste is an indirect way to reuse valuable resources. In case that it is simple to dismantle the machines and almost all the E-waste consists components like PCBs and CRTs, this paper puts emphasis on the processes of dismantling and recovering resources from PCBs and CRTs as an example for their widely usage. Universal recycling processes for PCBs and CRTs are introduced briefly and pollutants released during the processes are dust and waste water mainly. Measures are proposed to control the pollution, for instance, the shredder and grinders could be isolated during the physical process and it is suggested that personal protective devices such as masks are used to reduce the exposure level to heavy metals. Secondary pollution during the recycling process is inevitable, Thus cleaner technology is urgent to come into service. Although recycling may remove some contaminants, large amounts which are difficult to disposed ought to be concentrated in landfills. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:This overview discusses the ideas behind a collection of articles by invited authors on a diverse range of complex chemical mixtures and analytical methods which represent some of the most relevant and interesting issues on emerging contaminants of environmental health concerns. These chemicals, including those in high volume production, are released on an ongoing basis as a result of various human activities. Moreover, these emerging contaminants are highly toxic to humans and ubiquitous in the environment. The terms "environmental pollution" and "food web contaminant" became widely known from the first decades of the XX century and as a historical background, they have an early link to the agricultural use of mercury fungicides and DDT. Surprisingly for chemists and society, the 1960s saw the emergence of the global problem of environmental and food contamination with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The environmental science paradigm has lost none of its importance in the meantime, although it has evolved to encompass a vast number of environmentally hazardous chemicals, many of which are termed as "emerging". To put it simply, air-water-soil/sediment are the first compartments affected and become reservoirs or sinks for environmental pollutants, the next is the food web, topped by the top animal predators and humans. Understanding the occurrence, environmental fate and biotoxicity of emerging contaminants is of interest to many areas of science.
