Abstract:Trace metals are a group of toxic pollutants that can cause serious damage to ecosystems and humans. To determine the distribution characteristics of aqueous trace metal contamination and identify critical pollution sources, it is necessary to develop a detailed estimation of trace metal emissions. By considering emission-related factors in each industrial sector, we estimate that the emissions were approximately 2, 61 t, 2,684 t, 301 t and 309 t for mercury, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and lead, respectively, in 2010 in China. These values are much higher than those provided in annual statistical reports. Our research identified critical emissions sources, including Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Guangdong Provinces and Raw Chemical, Non-ferrous Smelting, Non-ferrous Mining and Metal Products industries. However, Shandong and Metal Products are ignored in ‘The Twelfth 5-Year Plan for Complete Control of Trace Metal Pollution’. This research generally found that the allowable discharge levels had a significant impact on specific sectors. Total emissions are much lower than the maximum allowable under current Chinese emissions regulations but exceed limits recommended by Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (European Union). Furthermore, our study found that many regions located along upstream reaches of the Yangtze River, like Sichuan Province, are sources of cross-boundary pollution.

Abstract:Everyone knows heavy metals are inorganic pollutants with strong toxicity and typical pollutant needing preferentially control. In the metal mines of China, the tails that were piled up on the ground already have reached more than 4 billion tons, and this number increased 2 ×108 tons every year. The characteristics of metal mine tails mainly include: (1) the grain size is extremely fine; (2) The quantity in weight was very large; (3) the toxicity is very strong; (4) Transporting concentration is very low. The migration of heavy metals would impact the local environment, the safety of the downriver resident and the plowland, the food safety of livestock as well as the solid’s safety. Based on the characteristics of mine tailings impacting to environment, this paper estimates the pollution property, as well as studies the harm for the outside environment through the experiment of the gross analysis and the infusion toxicity analysis. This research takes Longdu tailings of Dahong Mountain for example to know the harm of heavy metal ion.

Abstract:The increasing generation of toxic heavy metals from smelting activities poses significant threat to food safety, human health, and soil ecosystem, due to their unacceptable exposure risks and long term persistence. As a consequence, heavy metals in soils surrounding smelting areas are often known as causative contaminants for site remediation. According to an extensive review of the scientific literature (2010-2020), this study investigated the current pollution situation of heavy metals in soils near Chinese nonferrous metal smelters. Then, their main source approaches and health risk implications for soil remediation were discussed in detail. It should be noted that, inaccurate risk information would result in high remediation costs and unintended interventions. In addition, recent remediation progress for smelter contaminated sites were mainly introduced. By contrast, limited novel remediation approaches are currently available for stakeholders. Important considerations regarding site remediation technologies were further pointed out to highlight research gaps. Thus, more innovative studies need to be conducted for remediation enhancement of smelter sites. Lastly, this review concluded with an outlook of future research directions, which was expected be great helpful for the broad spectrum of researchers in this field. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:With the rapid urbanization and industrialization, heavy metal contamination in urban soil and surface dust has received particular attention due to its negative effects on the eco-environment and human health. Contamination and spatio-temporal characteristics, contamination sources, and source apportionment methods, as well as the ecological and health risks of heavy metals in urban soil and surface dust were reviewed. The knowledge gaps in current research and prospects of future works were proposed. Four key points were presented, including improving the research on the interaction mechanism of heavy metals in urban soil and surface dust under complex conditions, enriching verification methods to improve the source apportionment reliability of anthropogenic metals by receptor models, strengthening the research on chemical forms of heavy metals from different sources and their short-term accumulation processes in surface dust, and raising the credibility of ecological and health risk forecast of heavy metals by integrating the improved exposure parameters and chemical forms.

Environmental Contamination Characteristics of Heavy Metals from Abandoned Lead–zinc Mine Tailings in China

Abstract:China holds large-scale lead–zinc mineral resources; however, mining activities often cause severe contamination by heavy metals. This study systemically assessed contamination by eight heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr, Hg, Ni, and As) in mine tailings, soil, and groundwater from 27 contaminated sites across China. Regarding mine tailings, 1% of the mine tailing samples were hazardous waste and 20% were class II non-hazardous waste. Regarding soil, Zn and Pb showed the highest mean concentrations, at 5574.67 mg/kg and 2034.88 mg/kg, respectively. The indexes of geo-accumulation (Igeo) of eight heavy metals ranged from −3.62 to 7.67, while Zn, Pb, and Cd showed the highest environmental risk levels as the priority pollutants. The contamination levels of these heavy metals in groundwater were generally in the order of Zn>As>Pb>Ni>Cd>Cu>Hg>Cr. In this study, 20% of the soil and 10% of the groundwater samples exceeded the corresponding quality limits. The content of heavy metals in soil, groundwater, and mine tailing were positively correlated, demonstrating the main pollution source and transport paths. The pollution levels of heavy metals in soil and groundwater were listed in the foremost and moderate positions compared with similar sites from other countries, respectively. These results may help determine the pollution levels of lead–zinc mining regions and direct the remediation activities of target sites to support the environmental management of abandoned mining and tailing waste in China.

Abstract:Heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) have caused serious environmental pollution and health risks. Although the past few years have witnessed the achievements of studies on environmental behavior of HMs, the related toxicity mechanisms, and pollution control, their relationship remains a mystery. Researchers generally focused on one topic independently without comprehensive considerations due to the knowledge gap between environmental science and human health. Indeed, the full life cycle control of HMs is crucial and should be reconsidered with the combination of the occurrence, transport, and fate of HMs in the environment. Therefore, we started by reviewing the environmental behaviors of HMs which are affected by a variety of natural factors as well as their physicochemical properties. Furthermore, the related toxicity mechanisms were discussed according to exposure route, toxicity mechanism, and adverse consequences. In addition, the current state-of-the-art of available technologies for pollution control of HMs wastewater and solid wastes were summarized. Finally, based on the research trend, we proposed that advanced in-operando characterizations will help us better understand the fundamental reaction mechanisms, and big data analysis approaches will aid in establishing the prediction model for risk management.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is one of the most serious environmental problems in China and a large number of people are threatened by heavy metal pollution. Extensive damage to human organs, such as liver, kidney, digestion system, and nervous system can be caused by uptake of excess heavy metals. Heavy metals in the environment can originate from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Although contamination of heavy metals has been known to be a severe environmental problem for decades, it is still getting worse in recent years and there are few feasible approaches to resolve this problem. Due to their high toxicity, prevalent existence and persistence in the environment, lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) are commonly considered as the priority heavy metals which should be concerned and their emission should be controlled in China. This paper reviewed the pollution of heavy metals in China, focusing on the following four aspects: current status of heavy metal pollution in China, sources of heavy metals in China, toxicity and potential risk, and possible reduction strategies.

Abstract:Goal, Scope and BackgroundHeavy metal is among one of the pollutants, which cause severe threats to humans and the environment in China. The aim of the present review is to make information on the source of heavy metal pollution, distribution of heavy metals in the environment, and measures of pollution control accessible internationally, which are mostly published in Chinese.MethodsInformation from scientific journals, university journals and governmental releases are compiled focusing mainly on Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Partly Al, As, Cr, Fe, Hg, Mn and Ni are included also in part as well.Results and DiscussionIn soil, the average contents of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn are 0.097, 22.6, 26.0 and 74.2 mg/kg, respectively. In the water of the Yangtze River Basin, the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn are 0.080, 7.91,15.7 and 18.7 ug/L, respectively. In reference to human activities, the heavy metal pollution comes from three sources: industrial emission, wastewater and solid waste. The environment such as soil, water and air were polluted by heavy metals in some cases. The contents of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn even reach 3.16, 99.3, 84.1 and 147 mg/kg, respectively, in the soils of a wastewater irrigation zone. These contaminants pollute drinking water and food, and threaten human health. Some diseases resulting from pollution of geological and environmental origin, were observed with long-term and non-reversible effects.ConclusionsIn China, the geological background level of heavy metal is low, but with the activity of humans, soil, water, air, and plants are polluted by heavy metals in some cases and even affect human health through the food chain.Recommendations and OutlookTo remediate and improve environmental quality is a long strategy for the polluted area to keep humans and animals healthy. Phytoremediation would be an effective technique to remediate the heavy metal pollutions.

Abstract:The pollution of heavy metals and their harm to human health and the ecological environment have caused widespread concern. In this research, we collected Qinglong antimony mine tailings (8-meter deep) and then analyzed the content changes, geochemical behavior, and ecological risk assessment of 7 heavy metals (Sb, As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb) in the tailing profile, providing a theoretical basis for strengthening the source control and risk control of heavy metals. In addition, the chemical forms of Sb and As were analyzed, and the relationship between their forms and their physical and chemical properties was analyzed by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results showed that the concentrations of Sb (671.97–13896.62 mg/kg), As (287.38–657.36 mg/kg), Cu (27.61–74.48 mg/kg), and Cd (0.49–1.76 mg/kg) in the tailings greatly exceeded their background values, those of Pb (15.67–125.74 mg/kg) and Cr (22.69–185.88 mg/kg) moderately exceed their background values, while that of Zn (41.66–94.48 mg/kg) was slightly below its background value. Among the chemical forms of Sb and As, the residual fraction (F4) had the highest concentration. RDA showed that the pH and tailing particle size were significantly correlated with the chemical species content of Sb and As (p < 0.05). The improved Igeo analysis showed that the tailings were extremely polluted with Sb; highly polluted with As; uncontaminated to moderately polluted with Cd, Cu, and Pb; and uncontaminated with Zn and Cr, and the average Igeo values were in the following order: Sb >As > Pb > Cd > Cu > Zn > Cr. The potential environmental risk index showed that Sb and As imposed a serious risk and Cr, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn imposed a low risk, which was basically consistent with the results of the improved Igeo values. This research provides comprehensive theoretical approaches to better understand the source control and risk control of heavy metals in tailing ponds.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution of the environment caused by e-waste recycling is of increasing concern, but little information is available on metal emissions during e-waste processing activities. Here, the concentrations of nine metals in soil at four contaminated sites in Qingyuan (an e-waste recycling area in China) and the risks posed were investigated. Soil at the sites was polluted with metals, particularly Cd, Cu, Pb, and Sb, the concentrations of which were 2.83-2306, 2.17-1880, 0.96-1971, and 9.28-5607 times higher, respectively, than local background concentrations. The Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Sb concentrations were significantly lower in soil at an abandoned site than at acid-leaching, dismantling, and burning sites. The risks posed by metals in soil to human and environmental health were much higher at the acid-leaching and burning sites than the dismantling and abandoned sites. Source assessments indicated the differences in metal concentrations at the different sites were caused by different e-waste recycling activities at the sites. The results indicated crude e-waste processing is an important source of heavy metals to soil and should be of great concern. Pollution control measures and risk management strategies specific to soil contaminated through e-waste processing activities should be developed. (C) 2019 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has become a serious environmental problem and received increasing attention in recent years in China. In this paper, the current status of heavy metal pollution is analysed; the major heavy metal pollutants include Hg, Cd, Cr(VI), Pb and As. Non-ferrous metal industries, including mining and smelting, discharge about 67.8% of the total amounts of these five metals. Electroplating wastewater mainly from metal products manufacture and the printed circuit board industry also contributed to serious heavy metal pollution. For the discharge amount of Hg, Cd, Cr(VI), Pb and As, Chinese western and central area accounted for about 87%. Heavy metal-containing wastewater varied greatly quantitatively and qualitatively. Different treatment technologies for heavy metal removal from wastewater are introduced, evaluated and compared, including ion exchange, adsorption, solvent extraction, evaporation, air flotation, chemical precipitation, chemical oxidation and reduction, electrolyzation, biological flocculation, biosorption, membrane separation and nanotechnology. It is difficult to treat such complex wastewater using any single treatment method alone to meet the discharge standard. Integrated treatment processes should be applied. To alleviate and eliminate heavy metal pollution in China, comprehensive consideration should be taken to improve wastewater reuse, heavy metal recovery and the suitable disposal of the resulted residual wastes containing heavy metals. Multidisciplinary collaboration is required to develop innovative technologies for heavy metal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:An analysis was conducted on the heavy metal pollution situation in a certain lead-zinc mining area. Based on the current situation of the project area, an overall plan and implementation design for heavy metal pollution control in the mining area was proposed. By sealing the old openings, implementing in-situ safe disposal of residual waste residue, and restoring vegetation to the damaged ecological environment, the pollution in the mining area was eliminated and the ecological environment was restored.

Abstract:The contribution of smelting of nonferrous metals to heavy metals in surface soil have become increasingly important over the past decade. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals around an abandoned mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprise were investigated. Soil (14) and plant (18) samples were collected in the surrounding area. The total concentration of heavy metals and methyl mercury content were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average contents of Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As in all soil samples are higher than the second-level values of Soil environmental quality-Risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Hg in the leaves ranged from 0.003 to 0.174 mg kg<sup>-1</sup>. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis results indicate that Hg has a different environmental behavior compared to the other heavy metal under certain environmental or geographical conditions. But the mantel test statistical analysis results show that the Cr (P < 0.01), Cu, Pb, and Fe (P < 0.05) in the soil may have similar pollution sources with carbonate-bound mercury and iron-manganese oxide-bound mercury. The Hg concentrations show no correlation among plant leaves and soil, but significantly influenced by the distance and wind direction. These findings suggest that Hg in plant leaves may be derived from the deposition of atmospheric mercury from secondary mercury plant. The results will supplement those for relevant policy making for mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprises to improve urban environmental quality and human health.
