Abstract:Polar dielectrics are important optical materials enabling the subwavelength manipulation of light in infrared due to their capability to excite phonon polaritons.In practice,it is highly desired to actively modify these hyperbolic phonon polaritons（HPPs） to optimize or tune the response of the device.In this work,we investigate the plasmonic material,a monolayer graphene,and study its hybrid structure with three kinds of hyperbolic thin films grown on SiO 2 substrate.The inter-mode hybridization and their tunability have been thoroughly clarified from both the band dispersions and the mode patterns numerically calculated through a transfer matrix method.Our results show that these hybrid multilayer structures are of strong potentials for applications in plasmonic waveguides,modulators and detectors in infrared.
Van der Waals thin films of WTe 2 for natural hyperbolic plasmonic surfaces

Abstract:A hyperbolic plasmonic surface supports highly directional propagating polaritons with extremely large density of states. Such plasmon polaritons have been realized in artificially structured metasurfaces. However, the upper bound of the achievable plasmon wave vector is limited by the structure size, which calls for a natural hyperbolic surface without any structuring. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a natural hyperbolic plasmonic surface based on thin films of WTe 2 in the light wavelength range of 16 to 23 microns by far infrared absorption spectroscopy. The topological transition from the elliptic to the hyperbolic regime is further manifested by mapping the isofrequency contours of the plasmon. Moreover, the anisotropy character and plasmon frequency exhibit prominent temperature dependence. Our study demonstrates the first natural platform to host 2D hyperbolic plasmons, which opens exotic avenues for the manipulation of plasmon propagation, light-matter interaction and light emission in planar photonics.

Abstract:Natural hyperbolic materials (HMs) in two dimensions (2D) have an extraordinarily high anisotropy and a hyperbolic dispersion relation. Some of them can even sustain hyperbolic polaritons with great directional propagation and light compression to deeply sub-wavelength scales due to their inherent anisotropy. Herein, the anisotropic optical features of 2D natural HMs are reviewed. Four hyperbolic polaritons (i.e., phonon polaritons, plasmon polaritons, exciton polaritons, and shear polaritons) as well as their generation mechanism are discussed in detail. The natural merits of 2D HMs hold promise for practical quantum photonic applications such as valley quantum interference, mid-infrared polarizers, spontaneous emission enhancement, near-field thermal radiation, and a new generation of optoelectronic components, among others. The conclusion of these analyses outlines existing issues and potential interesting directions for 2D natural HMs. These findings could spur more interest in anisotropic 2D atomic crystals in the future, as well as the quick generation of natural HMs for new applications.

Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:In contrast to artificial metamaterials, natural two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic materials are able to support higher electromagnetic confinement and stronger photonic density of states. This means natural 2D hyperbolic materials have fascinating potential for applications in thermal photonics. In this work, we investigate mechanisms of near-field thermal radiation (NFTR) in a Td–WTe2 single layer at the nanoscale using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and density-functional theory. The results show that NFTR of Td–WTe2 can be 3 orders of magnitude larger than the blackbody limit. By using the photonic tunneling coefficient and the plasmon dispersion, we present a comprehensive study of plasmonic properties of Td–WTe2. Moreover, our first-principles calculations predict that application of a certain amount of mechanical stress can trigger topological transition between the elliptic and the hyperbolic surface states by regulating the Fermi surface and interband excitation threshold. Lastly, we systematically exhibit the evolution of surface plasmon polaritons in Td–WTe2 under mechanical stress and analyze the performance of using mechanical stress to modulate the corresponding NFTR. Our work explores the great potential of tunable radiative heat flux in Td–WTe2, which is explained here through the peculiar nature of hyperbolic surface plasmons.

Abstract:The observation of the electrically tunable and highly confined plasmons in graphene has stimulated the exploration of interesting properties of plasmons in other two dimensional materials. Recently, hyperbolic plasmon resonance modes are observed in exfoliated WTe2 films, a type-II Weyl semimetal with layered structure, providing a platform for the assembly of plasmons with hyperbolicity and exotic topological properties. However, the plasmon modes were observed in relatively thick and small-area films, which restrict the tunability and application for plasmons. Here, large-area ( cm) WTe2 films with different thickness are grown by chemical vapor deposition method, in which plasmon resonance modes are observed in films with different thickness down to about 8 nm. Hybridization of plasmon and surface polar phonons of the substrate is revealed by mapping the plasmon dispersion. The plasmon frequency is demonstrated to be tunable by changing the temperature and film thickness. Our results facilitate the development of a tunable and scalable WTe2 plasmonic system for revealing topological properties and towards various applications in sensing, imaging and light modulation.
Tuning Two-Dimensional Hyperbolic Plasmons in Black Phosphorus

Abstract:Black phosphorus presents a very anisotropic crystal structure, making it a potential candidate for hyperbolic plasmonics, characterized by a permittivity tensor where one of the principal components is metallic and the other dielectric. Here we demonstrate that atomically thin black phosphorus can be engineered to be a hyperbolic material operating in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum from the entire visible spectrum to ultraviolet. With the introduction of an optical gain, a new hyperbolic region emerges in the infrared. The character of this hyperbolic plasmon depends on the interplay between gain and loss along the two crystalline directions.

Different from phonon polaritons, hyperbolic plasmon polaritons originate from the interplay of free carrier Drude response and interband transitions, which promise good intrinsic tunability. However, tunable in-plane hyperbolic plasmon polariton and its optical topological transition of the isofrequency contours to the elliptic topology in a natural material have not been realized. Here we demonstrate the tuning of the optical topological transition through Mo doping and temperature. The optical topological transition energy is tuned over a wide range, with frequencies ranging from 429 cm(-1) (23.3 microns) for pure WTe2 to 270 cm(-1) (37.0 microns) at the 50% Mo-doping level at 10 K. Moreover, the temperature-induced blueshift of the optical topological transition energy is also revealed, enabling active and reversible tuning. Surprisingly, the localized surface plasmon resonance in skew ribbons shows unusual polarization dependence, accurately manifesting its topology, which renders a reliable means to track the topology with far-field techniques. Our results open an avenue for reconfigurable photonic devices capable of plasmon polariton steering, such as canaling, focusing, and routing, and pave the way for low-symmetry plasmonic nanophotonics based on anisotropic natural materials.

Abstract:Recent progress on anisotropic 2D materials brings new technologies for directional guidance of hyperbolic plasmons. Here, we investigate the plasmonic modes in twisted bilayer 2D materials (e.g., black phosphorous). Calculated dispersion curves show that two hyperbolas split as the twisted angle increases. The topological transition from closed ellipses to open hyperbolas is achieved by varying the frequency, indicating switching between highly directional and omnidirectional plasmons. These findings will provide potential applications of anisotropic 2D materials in the design of tunable field effect transistors and waveguides.

Hyperbolicity in 2D transition metal ditellurides induced by electronic bands nesting

Abstract:Naturally occurring hyperbolic plasmonic media is rare, and was only recently observed in the 1T$'$ phase of WTe$_2$. We elucidate on the physical origin of this strong infrared hyperbolic response, and attribute it to band-nested anisotropic interband transitions. Such phenomenon does not occur in general anisotropic materials, at least not in their pristine state. However, band-nested anisotropic interband transitions can in principle be induced via proper electronic band nesting. We illustrate this principle and demonstrate a topological elliptic-to-hyperbolic transition in MoTe$_2$ via strain engineering, which is otherwise non-hyperbolic.

Abstract:Plasmons in two-dimensional (2D) materials beyond graphene have recently gained much attention. However, the experimental investigation is limited due to the lack of suitable materials. Here, we experimentally demonstrate localized plasmons in a correlated 2D charge-density-wave (CDW) material: 2H-TaSe2. The plasmon resonance can cover a broad spectral range from the terahertz (40 {\mu}m) to the telecom (1.55 {\mu}m) region, which is further tunable by changing thickness and dielectric environments. The plasmon dispersion flattens at large wave vectors, resulted from the universal screening effect of interband transitions. More interestingly, anomalous temperature dependence of plasmon resonances associated with CDW excitations is observed. In the CDW phase, the plasmon peak close to the CDW excitation frequency becomes wider and asymmetric, mimicking two coupled oscillators. Our study not only reveals the universal role of the intrinsic screening on 2D plasmons, but also opens an avenue for tunable plasmons in 2D correlated materials.

Abstract:Anisotropic planar polaritons - hybrid electromagnetic modes mediated by phonons, plasmons, or excitons - in biaxial two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals crystals have attracted significant attention due to their fundamental physics and potential nanophotonic applications. In this Perspective, we review the properties of planar hyperbolic polaritons and the variety of methods that can be used to experimentally tune them. We argue that such natural, planar hyperbolic media should be fairly common in biaxial and uniaxial 2D and 1D van der Waals crystals, and identify the untapped opportunities they could enable for functional (i.e. ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric) polaritons. Lastly, we provide our perspectives on the technological applications of such planar hyperbolic polaritons.

Abstract:In-plane anisotropic van der Waals materials have emerged as a natural platform for anisotropic polaritons. Extreme anisotropic polaritons with in-situ broadband tunability are of great significance for on-chip photonics, yet their application remains challenging. In this work, we experimentally characterize through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements a van der Waals plasmonic material, 2M-WS 2 , capable of supporting intrinsic room-temperature in-plane anisotropic plasmons in the far and mid-infrared regimes. In contrast to the recently revealed natural hyperbolic plasmons in other anisotropic materials, 2M-WS 2 supports canalized plasmons with flat isofrequency contours in the frequency range of ~ 3000-5000 cm −1 . Furthermore, the anisotropic plasmons and the corresponding isofrequency contours can be reversibly tuned via in-situ ion-intercalation. The tunable anisotropic and canalization plasmons may open up further application perspectives in the field of uniaxial plasmonics, such as serving as active components in directional sensing, radiation manipulation, and polarization-dependent optical modulators.
In-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons: materials, properties, and nanophotonic devices

Abstract:Abstract In-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are phonon-mediated hybrid electromagnetic modes, particularly in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals, which have attracted increasing attention because of their peculiar optical properties and promising nanophotonic applications. Here, we review the most recent advances in in-plane HPhPs in terms of materials, optical properties and nanophotonic devices. We begin with a survey of recently discovered in-plane anisotropic vdW materials and bulk crystals that naturally exhibit in-plane HPhPs. The fundamental properties of HPhPs in these anisotropic materials are then discussed, focusing on propagation directionality such as direction rotation, unidirectional excitation, canalization, negative reflection, and negative refraction. Finally, we discuss the present applications of in-plane HPhPs in nanophotonic devices and offer a perspective on future developments of in-plane HPhPs towards nanophotonic chips.
The Optical Properties and Plasmonics of Anisotropic 2D Materials

Abstract:In the fast growing 2D materials family, anisotropic 2D materials, with their intrinsic in-plane anisotropy, exhibit a great potential in optoelectronics. One such typical material is black phosphorus (BP), with a layer-dependent and highly tunable bandgap. Such intrinsic anisotropy adds a new degree of freedom to the excitation, detection, and control of light. Particularly, hyperbolic plasmons with hyperbolic q-space dispersion are predicted to exist in BP films, where highly directional propagating polaritons with divergent densities of states are hosted. Combined with a tunable electronic structure, such natural hyperbolic surfaces may enable a series of exotic applications in nanophotonics. Herein, the anisotropic optical properties and plasmons (especially hyperbolic plasmons) of BP are discussed. In addition, other possible 2D material candidates (especially anisotropic layered semimetals) for hyperbolic plasmons are examined. This review may stimulate further research interest in anisotropic 2D materials and fully unleash their potential in flatland photonics.

Abstract:In recent years, enhanced light–matter interactions through a plethora of dipole-type polaritonic excitations have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials. In graphene, electrically tunable and highly confined plasmon-polaritons were predicted and observed, opening up opportunities for optoelectronics, bio-sensing and other mid-infrared applications. In hexagonal boron nitride, low-loss infrared-active phonon-polaritons exhibit hyperbolic behaviour for some frequencies, allowing for ray-like propagation exhibiting high quality factors and hyperlensing effects. In transition metal dichalcogenides, reduced screening in the 2D limit leads to optically prominent excitons with large binding energy, with these polaritonic modes having been recently observed with scanning near-field optical microscopy. Here, we review recent progress in state-of-the-art experiments, and survey the vast library of polaritonic modes in 2D materials, their optical spectral properties, figures of merit and application space. Taken together, the emerging field of 2D material polaritonics and their hybrids provide enticing avenues for manipulating light–matter interactions across the visible, infrared to terahertz spectral ranges, with new optical control beyond what can be achieved using traditional bulk materials.

Abstract:Abstract Atomically thin crystals of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host excitons with strong binding energies and sizable light-matter interactions. Coupled to optical cavities, monolayer TMDs routinely reach the regime of strong light-matter coupling, where excitons and photons admix coherently to form polaritons up to room temperature. Here, we explore the two-dimensional nature of TMD polaritons with scanning-cavity hyperspectral imaging. We record a spatial map of polariton properties of extended WS 2 monolayers coupled to a tunable micro cavity in the strong coupling regime, and correlate it with maps of exciton extinction and fluorescence taken from the same flake with the cavity. We find a high level of homogeneity, and show that polariton splitting variations are correlated with intrinsic exciton properties such as oscillator strength and linewidth. Moreover, we observe a deviation from thermal equilibrium in the resonant polariton population, which we ascribe to non-Markovian polariton-phonon coupling. Our measurements reveal a promisingly consistent polariton landscape, and highlight the importance of phonons for future polaritonic devices.

Abstract:Hyperbolic polaritons that originate from the extreme optical anisotropy in van der Waals (vdW) crystals have gained much attention for their potential in controlling nanolight. For practical use, there has been a strong interest to develop various manipulation strategies to customize the propagation of hyperbolic polaritons on a deeply sub-diffractional scale. In this regard, phase-change materials (PCMs) that possess two phases with different refractive indices offer suitably a tunable dielectric environment. Here, we report on the tuning of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in natural vdW crystals, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO 3 ), using the plasmonic phase-change material In 3 SbTe 2 (IST). Unlike conventional PCMs whose both phases are dielectric, IST features a metallic crystalline phase that is stable at room temperature. The coupling between polaritons with their mirror charges in the underneath crystalline IST triggers an even stronger field confinement for polaritons. Moreover, benefited from the metallicity of laser-writable crystalline IST, we show an all-optical material platform in which crystalline IST boundaries efficiently excite and focus hyperbolic phonon polaritons in α-MoO 3 . Our experiments highlight the possibility to obtain new degrees of freedom in polariton engineering with plasmonic PCMs, thereby expanding the toolkit of tunable nanophotonics with flexible, on-demand fabrication and reconfiguration capabilities.

Holographic Nano-Imaging of Terahertz Dirac Plasmon Polaritons in Topological Insulator Antenna Resonators

Abstract:Excitation of Dirac plasmon polaritons (DPPs) in bi-dimensional materials have attracted considerable interest in recent years, both from perspectives of understanding their physics and exploring their transformative potential for nanophotonic devices, including ultra-sensitive plasmonic sensors, ultrafast saturable absorbers, modulators, and switches. Topological insulators (TIs) represent an ideal technological platform in this respect because they can support plasmon polaritons formed by Dirac carriers in the topological surface states. Tracing propagation of DPPs is a very challenging task, particularly at terahertz (THz) frequencies, where the DPP wavelength becomes over one order of magnitude shorter than the free space photon wavelength. Furthermore, severe attenuation hinders the comprehensive analysis of their characteristics. Here, the properties of DPPs in real TI-based devices are revealed. Bi2Se3 rectangular antennas can efficiently confine the propagation of DPPs to a single dimension and, as a result, enhance the DPPs visibility despite the strong intrinsic attenuation. The plasmon dispersion and loss properties from plasmon profiles are experimentally determined, along the antennas, obtained using holographic near-field nano-imaging in a wide range of THz frequencies, from 2.05 to 4.3 THz. The detailed investigation of the unveiled DPP properties can guide the design of novel topological quantum devices exploiting their directional propagation.
