Abstract:Topological insulators (TIs) are a new type of Dirac material that possess unique electrical and optical properties, enabling the generation of surface plasmons over an extensive spectral range with promising applications in functional devices. Herein, we fabricated antimony telluride (Sb 2 Te 3 ) TI nanoparticles by using magnetron sputtering and focused ion beam (FIB) lithography techniques, and experimentally demonstrated high-performance refractive index nanosensing. We find that the Sb 2 Te 3 TI nanoparticles can support the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which depends on the dimensions of the TI nanoparticle. TI-based LSPR can contribute to the nanoscale sensing of the surrounding refractive index with a high sensitivity of 443 nm RIU −1 , which is comparable to that of plasmonic sensors based on metallic nanoparticles. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical simulations. This work will pave a new way to explore TI optical properties and applications in nanophotonic devices, especially plasmonic nanosensors.

Density-independent plasmons for terahertz-stable topological metamaterials

Abstract:To efficiently integrate cutting-edge terahertz technology into compact devices, the highly confined terahertz plasmons are attracting intensive attentions. Compared to plasmons at visible frequencies in metals, terahertz plasmons, typically in lightly doped semiconductors or graphene, are sensitive to carrier density (n) and thus have an easy tunability, which, however, leads to unstable or imprecise terahertz spectra. By deriving a simplified but universal form of plasmon frequencies, here we reveal a unified mechanism for generating unusual n-independent plasmons (DIPs) in all topological states with different dimensions. Remarkably, we predict that terahertz DIPs can be excited in 2D nodal-line and 1D nodal-point systems, confirmed by the first-principles calculations on almost all existing topological semimetals with diverse lattice symmetries. Besides of n independence, the feature of Fermi-velocity and degeneracy-factor dependences in DIPs can be applied to design topological superlattice and multi-walled carbon nanotube metamaterials for broadband terahertz spectroscopy and quantized terahertz plasmons, respectively. Surprisingly, high spatial confinement and quality factor, also insensitive to n, can be simultaneously achieved in these terahertz DIPs. Our findings pave the way to developing topological plasmonic devices for stable terahertz applications.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are electromagnetic excitations existing at the interface between a metal and a dielectric. SPPs provide a promising path in nanophotonic devices for light manipulation at the micro and nanoscale with applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and energy harvesting. Recently, SPPs have been extended to unconventional materials like graphene, transparent oxides, superconductors, and topological systems characterized by linearly dispersive electronic bands. In this case, three‐dimensional Dirac and Weyl semimetals offer a promising frontier for infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) radiation tuning by topologically‐protected SPPs. In this work, we investigate the THz‐IR optical response, of platinum ditelluride (PtTe2) type‐II Dirac topological semimetal films grown on Si substrates. We detect SPPs generated on microscale ribbon arrays of PtTe2 in the far‐field limit, finding an excellent agreement among measurements, theoretical model, and electromagnetic simulation data. The far‐field measurements have been further supported by near‐field infrared data which indicate a strong electric field enhancement due to the SPP excitation near the ribbon edges. The whole results of this paper, indicate that PtTe2 ribbon array appears an ideal active layout for geometrically tunable SPPs thus inspiring a new fashion of optically tunable materials in the technologically demanding THz and IR spectrum. Surface plasmon-phonon-magnon polariton in a topological insulator-antiferromagnetic bilayer structure

Abstract:We present a robust technique for computationally studying surface polariton modes in hybrid materials. We use a semiclassical model that allows us to understand the physics behind the interactions between collective excitations of the hybrid system and develop a scattering and transfer matrix method that imposes the proper boundary conditions to solve Maxwell's equations and derive a general equation describing the surface polariton in a heterostructure consisting of N constituent materials. We apply this method to a test structure composed of a topological insulator (TI) and an antiferromagnetic material (AFM) to study the resulting surface Dirac plasmon-phonon-magnon polariton (DPPMP). We find that interactions between the excitations of the two constituents result in the formation of hybridized modes and the emergence of avoided-crossing points in the dispersion relations for the DPPMP. For the specific case of a Bi2Se3 TI material combined with a 3D AFM such as NiO, MnF2 , or FeF2 , the polariton branch with low frequency below 2 THz redshifts upon increasing the thickness of TI thin film, which leads to an upper bound on the thickness of the TI layer that will allow an observable signature of strong coupling and the emergence of hybridized states. We also find that the strength of the coupling between the TI and the AFM, which is parametrized by the amplitude of the avoided-crossing splitting between the two polariton branches at the magnon resonance frequency, depends on the magnitude of the magnetic dipole and the linewidth of the magnon in the AFM material as well as on the Fermi energy of Dirac plasmon in the TI. Finally, we show that materials with extremely high quality, i.e., low scattering loss rate, are essential to achieve an experimentally observable strong coupling between a TI and 3D AFM material. The overall analysis identifies the material properties that are necessary to achieve experimentally observable strong coupling for the interaction between THz excitations in a TI/AFM heterostructure and can thereby guide experimental efforts. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevMaterials.6.085201 ©2022 American Physical Society

Topological insulator-based Dirac hyperbolic metamaterial with large mode indices

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs) are engineered materials with a hyperbolic isofrequency surface, enabling a range of novel phenomena and applications including negative refraction, enhanced sensing, and subdiffraction imaging, focusing, and waveguiding. Existing HMMs primarily work in the visible and infrared spectral range due to the inherent properties of their constituent materials. Here we demonstrate a THz-range Dirac HMM using topological insulators (TIs) as the building blocks. We find that the structure houses up to three high-wavevector volume plasmon polariton (VPP) modes, consistent with transfer matrix modeling. The VPPs have mode indices ranging from 126 to 531, 10-100x larger than observed for VPP modes in traditional media while maintaining comparable quality factors. We attribute these properties to the two-dimensional Dirac nature of the electrons occupying the topological insulator surface states. Because these are van der Waals materials, these structures can be grown at a wafer-scale on a variety of substrates, allowing them to be integrated with existing THz structures and enabling next-generation THz optical devices.

Abstract:Plasmonics plays an important role in the development of nanophotonics, which allows breaking diffraction limit and controlling light in deep-subwavelength scale due to the strong interaction between light and free carriers. Noble metals and 2-dimensional electron gas have been the main platforms for studying plasmonics over the past decade. The metal-based plasmonic devices have exhibited great potential in various applications, including integrated photonic systems, biological sensing, super-resolution imaging and surface-enhanced Raman scattering, etc. Because of the high carrier density, plasmons of noble metals are realized in the near-infrared to visible frequency range. With the rapid development of new materials, many other plasmonic materials are discovered to exhibit new properties. One example is the graphene plasmons working in the mid-infrared and terahertz spectral range, which exhibit strong field confinement and frequency tunability due to the massless Dirac fermions and other exotic electrical and optical properties. Recently, topological materials, the band structures of which are composed of cones with linear dispersion like in graphene, are discovered, such as the topological insulators, Dirac semimetals, Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals, providing another platform to study the Dirac plasmons. Such linear dispersion results in small electron mass and unique carrier density dependence of plasmons. In addition, topological materials possess a tremendous amount of exotic electron properties, such as the ultrahigh mobility, topological surface states and chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals, etc. Many of these electronic properties can be inherited by the collective oscillation of free electrons, promising new possibility for plasmonics. Here, the experimental observations of plasmons in topological insulators and topological semimetals are reviewed, with special focus on the studies based on electron energy loss spectrum and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. At the end, other topological materials with potential for hosting 2D plasmons are discussed. This review provides an overview of plasmons in topological semimetals and may stimulate further quest of more exotic features for plasmons.

Abstract:In this work, we study topological edge and corner states in two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices from designer surface plasmon crystals (DSPCs), where the vertical confinement of the designer surface plasmons enables signal detection without the need of additional covers for the sample. In particular, the formation of higher-order topological insulator can be determined by the two-dimensional Zak phase, and the zero-dimensional subwavelength corner states are found in the designed DSPCs at the terahertz (THz) frequency band together with the edge states. Moreover, the corner state frequency can be tuned by modifying the defect strength, i.e., the location or diameter of the corner pillars. This work may provide a new approach for confining THz waves in DSPCs, which is promising for the development of THz topological photonic integrated devices with high compactness, robustness and tunability.
Three-dimensional Photonic Topological Insulator Without Spin–orbit Coupling

Abstract:Spin-orbit coupling, a fundamental mechanism underlying topological insulators, has been introduced to construct the latter's photonic analogs, or photonic topological insulators (PTIs). However, the intrinsic lack of electronic spin in photonic systems leads to various imperfections in emulating the behaviors of topological insulators. For example, in the recently demonstrated three-dimensional (3D) PTI, the topological surface states emerge, not on the surface of a single crystal as in a 3D topological insulator, but along an internal domain wall between two PTIs. Here, by fully abolishing spin-orbit coupling, we design and demonstrate a 3D PTI whose topological surface states are self-guided on its surface, without extra confinement by another PTI or any other cladding. The topological phase follows the original Fu's model for the topological crystalline insulator without spin-orbit coupling. Unlike conventional linear Dirac cones, a unique quadratic dispersion of topological surface states is directly observed with microwave measurement. Our work opens routes to the topological manipulation of photons at the outer surface of photonic bandgap materials.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) at the interface between a three-dimensional strong topological insulator (TI) and a layered superconductor/magnetic insulator structure, within the random phase approximation. The tunability of the SPP through electronic doping can be enhanced when the magnetic permeability of the layered structure becomes higher. When the interface is gapped by superconductivity or perpendicular magnetism, the SPP dispersion is further distorted, accompanied by a shift of group velocity and penetration depth. Such a shift of the SPP reaches a maximum when the magnitude of the Fermi level approaches the gap value, and may lead to observable effects. The tunable SPP at the interface between layered-superconductor and magnetic materials in proximity to the TI surface may provide new insight in the detection of Majorana fermions.
Terahertz nanospectroscopy of plasmon polaritons for the evaluation of doping in quantum devices

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) waves are a highly sensitive probe of free carrier concentrations in semiconducting materials. However, most experiments operate in the far-field, which precludes the observation of nanoscale features that affect the material response. Here, we demonstrate the use of nanoscale THz plasmon polaritons as an indicator of surface quality in prototypical quantum devices properties. Using THz near-field hyperspectral measurements, we observe polaritonic features in doped silicon near a metal-semiconductor interface. The presence of the THz surface plasmon polariton indicates the existence of a thin film doped layer on the device. Using a multilayer extraction procedure utilising vector calibration, we quantitatively probe the doped surface layer and determine its thickness and complex permittivity. The recovered multilayer characteristics match the dielectric conditions necessary to support the THz surface plasmon polariton. Applying these findings to superconducting resonators, we show that etching of this doped layer leads to an increase of the quality factor as determined by cryogenic measurements. This study demonstrates that THz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) is a promising diagnostic tool for characterization of surface dielectric properties of quantum devices.

Abstract:Topological insulators are innovative materials with semiconducting bulk together with surface states forming a Dirac cone, which ensure metallic conduction in the surface plane. Therefore, topological insulators represent an ideal platform for optoelectronics and photonics. The recent progress of science and technology based on topological insulators enables the exploitation of their huge application capabilities. Here, we review the recent achievements of optoelectronics, photonics and plasmonics with topological insulators. Plasmonic devices and photodetectors based on topological insulators in a wide energy range, from Terahertz to the ultraviolet, promise outstanding impact. Furthermore, the peculiarities, the range of applications and the challenges of the emerging fields of topological photonics and thermoplasmonics are discussed.
Observation of Majorana Plasmon by Molecular Topological Superconductor and Its Topological SPASER

Abstract:Plasmons, quantized collective oscillations of electrons, have been observed in metals and semiconductors. Such massive electrons have been the basic ingredients of research in plasmonics and optical metamaterials.1 Also, Dirac plasmons have been observed in graphene, two-dimensional electron systems and topological insulators (TIs). A nontrivial Z2 topology of the bulk valence band leads to the emergence of massless Dirac fermions on the surface in TIs.2,3 Although Dirac plasmons can be formed through additional grating or patterning, their characteristics promise novel plasmonic metamaterials that are tunable in the terahertz and mid-infrared frequency ranges.4 Recently, the Majorana fermions have been verified through various kinds of topological superconductors(TSCs). In particular, the quantized and paired spin waves have been discovered in polyaromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)5 and Majorana hinge and corner modes have been identified in the organic crystal of PAHs. Interestingly, regularity and periodicity can serve in the xy-plane of the crystal as the patterning of TSC resonators. Here, first we report experimental evidence of Majorana plasmonic excitations in a molecular topological superconductor (MTSC). It was prepared from MTSC resonators with different stacked numbers of HYLION-12. Distributing carriers into multiple MTSC resonators enhance the plasmonic resonance frequency and magnitude, which is different from the effects in a conventional semiconductor superlattice.6,7 The direct results of the unique carrier density scaling law of the resonance of massless Majorana fermions is demonstrated. Moreover, topological surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (SPASER) is also firstly created from the MTSC resonator. It has two mutually time-reversed chiral surface plasmon modes carrying the opposite topological charges.

Photonic Topological Transitions and Epsilon-Near-Zero Surface Plasmons in Type-II Dirac Semimetal NiTe$_2$

Abstract:Compared to artificial metamaterials, where nano-fabrication complexities and finite-size inclusions can hamper the desired electromagnetic response, several natural materials like van der Waals crystals hold great promise for designing efficient nanophotonic devices in the optical range. Here, we investigate the unusual optical response of NiTe$_2$, a van der Waals crystal and a type-II Dirac semimetal hosting Lorentz-violating Dirac fermions. By {\it ab~initio~} density functional theory modeling, we show that NiTe$_2$ harbors multiple topological photonic regimes for evanescent waves (such as surface plasmons) across the near-infrared and optical range. By electron energy-loss experiments, we identify surface plasmon resonances near the photonic topological transition points at the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) frequencies $\approx 0.79$, $1.64$, and $2.22$ eV. Driven by the extreme crystal anisotropy and the presence of Lorentz-violating Dirac fermions, the experimental evidence of ENZ surface plasmon resonances confirm the non-trivial photonic and electronic topology of NiTe$_2$. Our study paves the way for realizing devices for light manipulation at the deep-subwavelength scales based on electronic and photonic topological physics for nanophotonics, optoelectronics, imaging, and biosensing applications.

Tunable Optical Topological Transitions of Plasmon Polaritons in WTe 2 Van Der Waals Films

Abstract:Naturally existing in-plane hyperbolic polaritons and the associated optical topological transitions, which avoid the nano-structuring to achieve hyperbolicity, can outperform their counterparts in artificial metasurfaces. Such plasmon polaritons are rare, but experimentally revealed recently in WTe2 van der Waals thin films. Different from phonon polaritons, hyperbolic plasmon polaritons originate from the interplay of free carrier Drude response and interband transitions, which promise good intrinsic tunability. However, tunable in-plane hyperbolic plasmon polariton and its optical topological transition of the isofrequency contours to the elliptic topology in a natural material have not been realized. Here we demonstrate the tuning of the optical topological transition through Mo doping and temperature. The optical topological transition energy is tuned over a wide range, with frequencies ranging from 429 cm(-1) (23.3 microns) for pure WTe2 to 270 cm(-1) (37.0 microns) at the 50% Mo-doping level at 10 K. Moreover, the temperature-induced blueshift of the optical topological transition energy is also revealed, enabling active and reversible tuning. Surprisingly, the localized surface plasmon resonance in skew ribbons shows unusual polarization dependence, accurately manifesting its topology, which renders a reliable means to track the topology with far-field techniques. Our results open an avenue for reconfigurable photonic devices capable of plasmon polariton steering, such as canaling, focusing, and routing, and pave the way for low-symmetry plasmonic nanophotonics based on anisotropic natural materials.

Abstract:Photonic topological states, providing light-manipulation approaches in robust manners, have attracted intense attention. Connecting photonic topological states with far-field degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) has given rise to fruitful phenomena. Recently emerged higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), hosting boundary states two or more dimensions lower than those of bulk, offer new paradigms to localize or transport light topologically in extended dimensionalities. However, photonic HOTIs have not been related to d.o.f. of radiation fields yet. Here, we report the observation of polarization-orthogonal second-order topological corner states at different frequencies on a designer-plasmonic kagome metasurface in the far field. Such phenomenon stands on two mechanisms, i.e., projecting the far-field polarizations to the intrinsic parity d.o.f. of lattice modes and the parity splitting of the plasmonic corner states in spectra. We theoretically and numerically show that the parity splitting originates from the underlying interorbital coupling. Both near-field and far-field experiments verify the polarization-orthogonal nondegenerate second-order topological corner states. Abstract:In this paper, the dispersion relations of the surface plasmon polaritons in TI nanowires have been investigated. For simplicity, TI nanowire has been modeled as a dielectric cylinder with a conductive surface, the conductivity of which is an anti-symmetric tensor. The off-diagonal terms of the conductivity tensor only slightly change the dispersion relations. Due to small conductivities, these surface plasmon polaritons have extremely large wavenumbers and azimuthal indices; the electric fields are tightly confined near the conductive surface. For high-order modes, cut-off phenomena have been observed. In the end, the effects of losses and much larger bulk permittivities on the dispersion relations of surface plasmons have been discussed. The simple model proposed in this paper can be directly applied to other materials with arbitrary surface conductivity. Our investigations show that TI nanostructures are promising platforms for nanophotonic applications in the future.

Abstract:Naturally existing in-plane hyperbolic polaritons and the associated optical topological transitions, which avoid the nano-structuring to achieve hyperbolicity, can outperform their counterparts in artificial metasurfaces. Such plasmon polaritons are rare, but experimentally revealed recently in WTe2 van der Waals thin films. Different from phonon polaritons, hyperbolic plasmon polaritons originate from the interplay of free carrier Drude response and interband transitions, which promise good intrinsic tunability. However, tunable in-plane hyperbolic plasmon polariton and its optical topological transition of the isofrequency contours to the elliptic topology in a natural material have not been realized. Here we demonstrate the tuning of the optical topological transition through Mo-doping and temperature. The optical topological transition energy is tuned over a wide range, with frequencies ranging from 429 cm-1 (23.3 microns) for pure WTe2 to 270 cm-1 (37.0 microns) at the 50% Mo-doping level at 10 K. Moreover, the temperature-induced blueshift of the optical topological transition energy is also revealed, enabling active and reversible tuning. Surprisingly, the localized surface plasmon resonance in skew ribbons shows unusual polarization dependence, accurately manifesting its topology, which renders a reliable means to track the topology with far-field techniques. Our results open an avenue for reconfigurable photonic devices capable of plasmon polariton steering, such as canaling, focusing and routing, and pave a way for low-symmetry plasmonic nanophotonics based on anisotropic natural materials.

Abstract:Thin layers of in-plane anisotropic materials can support ultraconfined polaritons, whose wavelengths depend on the propagation direction. Such polaritons hold potential for the exploration of fundamental material properties and the development of novel nanophotonic devices. However, the real-space observation of ultraconfined in-plane anisotropic plasmon polaritons (PPs)—which exist in much broader spectral ranges than phonon polaritons—has been elusive. Here we apply terahertz nanoscopy to image in-plane anisotropic low-energy PPs in monoclinic Ag 2 Te platelets. The hybridization of the PPs with their mirror image—by placing the platelets above a Au layer—increases the direction-dependent relative polariton propagation length and the directional polariton confinement. This allows for verifying a linear dispersion and elliptical isofrequency contour in momentum space, revealing in-plane anisotropic acoustic terahertz PPs. Our work shows high-symmetry (elliptical) polaritons on low-symmetry (monoclinic) crystals and demonstrates the use of terahertz PPs for local measurements of anisotropic charge carrier masses and damping.

Abstract:The study explores photonic band inversion‐induced absorption enhancement in bulk Dirac semi‐metal (BDS) based Tamm plasmon multilayer system. The topological phase transition and the bulk band topology of a 1D photonic crystal in the terahertz bands are studied by integrating it with Dirac semi‐metal. The sensitive photonic structure exhibits multi‐spectral terahertz absorption and is tunable with Fermi energy. Topological photonics is becoming increasingly important due to its possibility to manipulate light with topological phases. Constrained by tunable material, the concept of the topological phase of light is less employed for the realization of terahertz (THz) devices. Incorporating tunable plasmonic materials with topological photonic structures can promote topological protection at the THz frequency. Here the topological phase transition in the terahertz bands is demonstrated by integrating Dirac semi‐metal with topological photonic crystal. This work proposes photonic band inversion induced frequency splitting and absorption enhancement in bulk Dirac semi‐metal (BDS) based Tamm plasmon multilayer system. The enhancement in absorption is achieved by designing a one‐dimensional topological edge state such that the combination with the Tamm plasmon state provides topological protection to the entire BDS–photonic crystal heterostructure. The proposed structure undergoes band inversion, a topological transition in the photonic band structure. These results may facilitate the realization of terahertz topological effects and contribute to the goal of topological protection in sensing applications.
