Suitability Evaluation of Rural Sewage Treatment Schemes in China Considering Life-Cycle Environmental Impacts and Regional Differences

Abstract:A comprehensive and integrated evaluation model for selecting suitable rural sewage treatment (RST) scheme is limited in China, which results in the rural sewage treatment do not really function as expected. This research aims to develop a novel evaluation model that effectively helps rural areas to find the most suitable rural sewage treatment schemes. The evaluation model adopts the multiple-attribute, decision-making approach (MADM), whose attributes cover various evaluation index and treatment schemes, and utilizes AHP-TOPSIS to determine the optimal RST schemes. Eight scenarios considering demographic, geographic and economic characteristics are used for the evaluation, representing the principal situations in Chinese rural areas. Moreover, to demonstrate the application of the evaluation model, the rural areas of Hunan Province, China, are chosen for the study. The results show that centralized sewage treatments scheme is more suitable to the areas with a high population density (PD)/high level of economic development (EDL)/low topographic slope (TS) are more suitable for, while decentralized sewage treatments schemes are better for the areas with a low PD/low level of EDL/high TS. In regions with a high PD/low level of EDL, the index weight of the construction investment cost has a great influence on the optimization results, while in regions with a high PD/high level of EDL, the index weight of the global warming potential and treatment effect have a great influence on the optimization results. The research results benefit to solve the global RST efficiency problem to a certain extent and provide a reference for decision-makers in RST project construction.
