Abstract:Solar desalination is a promising and sustainable solution for water shortages in the future. Interfacial solar‐to‐heat conversion for desalination has attracted increasing attention in the past decades, due to the heat localization induced high thermal efficiency, simple structure, and low cost. In this review, the authors summarize and analyze the critical processes involved in such a solar desalination system, including the thermal conversion and transport, salt dissipation, and vapor manipulation. Mathematical models of heat transfer and salt dissipation are also built for quantitative analysis of systematic performance relative to properties of employed materials and system designs. Recent efforts devoted to improving the overall thermal efficiency, salt rejection, and water yield are then summarized. Based on the analysis and previous results, opportunities for further interfacial solar desalination development are highlighted.

Abstract:Passive vapor generation systems with interfacial solar heat localization enable high-efficiency low-cost desalination. In particular, recent progress combining interfacial solar heating and vaporization enthalpy recycling through a capillary-fed multistage architecture, known as the thermally-localized multistage solar still (TMSS), significantly improves the performance of passive solar desalination. Yet, state-of-the-art experimental demonstrations of solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency are still limited since the dominant factors and the general design principle for TMSS were not well-understood. In this work, we show optimizing the overall heat and mass transport in a multistage configuration plays a key role for further improving the performance. This understanding also increases the flexibility of material choices for the TMSS design. Using a low-cost and free-of-salt accumulation TMSS architecture, we experimentally demonstrated a record-high solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 385% with a production rate of 5.78 L m(-2) h(-1) under one-sun illumination, where more than 75% of the total production was collected through condensation. This work not only significantly improves the performance of existing passive solar desalination technologies for portable and affordable drinking water, but also provides a comprehensive physical understanding and optimization principle for TMSS systems.

Abstract:Seawater desalination is a promising solution to global water shortage. Commercially available desalination technologies typically require large installations which can be impractical for developing regions without well-developed infrastructure. Passive solar desalination promises a viable solution, but can suffer from low efficiencies. Recent advances in the thermal design of small-scale solar desalination systems have demonstrated the potential for high-efficiency solar desalination in portable systems. In particular, the concept of a thermally-localized multistage solar still (TMSS) - which combines localized heating of a capillary flow with condensation heat recycling - has been experimentally demonstrated very recently and achieved over 100% solar-thermal cumulative efficiency. However, a fundamental understanding of the heat and mass transfer, efficiency limits and optimization strategies are missing in the literature. This work presents a modeling framework that evaluates the thermal and vapor transport in a model TMSS system with varying device configuration and predicts its solar desalination efficiency. We demonstrate that an ultrahigh solar-thermal cumulative efficiency, many times higher than that of conventional solar stills, can be achieved by optimizing the number of stages and device geometry. Specifically, our modeling shows that the efficiency of the capillary fed TMSS is limited by the dissipation of thermal energy to the environment during condensation and significant gains in efficiency can be achieved by minimizing this loss. This work provides insights into physical processes critical for thermally-localized portable solar distillation which could lead to high-performance desalination or water purification technologies.

Abstract:Solar interfacial evaporation, featured by high energy transfer efficiency, low cost, and environmental compatibility, has been widely regarded as a promising technology for solar desalination. However, the interplay between energy transfer and water transport in the same channels suggests that the tradeoff between high efficiency and long-term stability inherently exists in conventional photothermal nanomaterials. We summarize state-of-the-art research on various anti-salt clogging photothermal microstructures as long-term stable interfacial solar evaporators for solar desalination. The review starts with an overview of the current status and the fundamental limit of photothermal materials for solar desalination. Four representative strategies are analyzed in detail with the most recent experimental demonstrations, including fluid convection enhancement, surface wettability engineering, energy-mass-path decoupling, and surface chemistry engineering. Finally, this article focuses on the challenges in anti-salt clogging solar interfacial evaporators and potential point-of-use applications in the future.

Passive solar desalination towards high efficiency and salt rejection via a reverse-evaporating water layer of millimetre-scale thickness

Abstract:Although solar-driven reverse distillation integrated with thermal localization has recently shown attractive solar-to-water conversion efficiency, effective salt rejection/discharge approaches are scarce for achieving sustainable passive solar desalination. Here we elaborately fabricated solar distillation devices based on reverse-evaporating water layers of millimetre-scale thickness and successfully realized simultaneous high efficiency and salt rejection during solar desalination processes. Two passive operation modes (gravity mode and discharge mode) were developed for sustainable salt rejection, which showed solar-to-water conversion efficiencies of 59.1% and 60.6%, respectively, with 3.5 wt% brine. More notably, the device fabricated also showed excellent capacity (47.4% efficiency) to continuously desalt high-salinity (21 wt%) water without salt crystallization. For a wide application level, we discussed and tested ten-stage desalination devices based on reverse-evaporating water layers. A total efficiency of 354% was achieved alongside the success of salt rejection in each stage, indicating a new pathway for passive solar high-efficiency and salt-rejection desalination.

Experimental and Mechanism Analysis of a Tandem Solar Thermal System with Staged Water Level Reduction

Abstract:Non-concentrating collectors are essential heat-collecting devices in solar desalination systems but typically face challenges such as low efficiency and susceptibility to corrosion. This work introduces a novel tandem solar thermal system with staged water level reduction and conducts experiments under various outdoor weather conditions and different startup strategies, along with corresponding mechanistic analyses. The results revealed that the system's thermal performance is optimal under the 8°C control, with a maximum thermal efficiency reaching 82.16%. The maximum temperature rise ratio between this system and a single collector under the same operating conditions reached 3.391. Moreover, the system's thermodynamic process is divided into two stages based on flow and phase changes, with a transition point at 67 °C. This novel system extends the application of non-concentrating collectors into medium-temperature domains, offering a cost-effective solution with minimal secondary energy dependence and fewer energy conversion steps, making it particularly suitable as a heat collection module for desalination systems in arid and semi-arid regions.

Abstract:Conventional active seawater evaporation technologies, that is, they include components with mechanical moving parts, generally involve large plants with high capital and operating costs. Recently, the passive solar-driven interfacial evaporation (PSDIE) with no active parts is considered as one of the most promising solar energy utilization and freshwater acquisition way. Especially in isolated and impoverished off-grid areas, passive desalination with economic feasibility and reliability has great application prospects. Based on the effective optical-thermal control of evaporator design and reasonable arrangement of deployment scheme, thermal localization in the vapor-liquid interface is conducive to reducing the heat dissipation into the bulk water and significantly improving the efficiency of desalination. Nonetheless, the Achilles' heel of the technology, namely the existence of salt accumulation at the photothermal interface under the condition of high intensity work including concentrated brine water and intense solar irradiation, which inevitably reduces the availability of fresh water resources and the service life of the evaporator. Addressing this issue is of the utmost importance and arduous task to maintain uninterrupted passive evaporator operation. In this review, the outline of the state-of-the-art self-propelling salt-blocking strategies in PSDIE is mainly divided into three categories, i.e. mechanical removal, shielding effect, and force-driven fluid flow. Finally, the challenges and prospects of salt resistance in PSDIE are emphasized, providing a roadmap for the future development of solar evaporation technology.

Abstract:Solar desalination holds great promise for addressing global water scarcity and reducing carbon footprints. In recent years, thermally localized solar interfacial desalination processes have attracted much attention due to their efficient water evaporation potential. Previous efforts have focused on developing novel photothermal materials and optimizing thermal management to increase system evaporation rates. However, the water production rate of a desalination device is mainly independent of its evaporator performance, which makes it challenging to translate improved system evaporation rates into actual water production rates. This Review discusses the significance of steam condensation in promoting water production and emphasizes the importance of latent heat recovery. We highlight the industrial design of the desalination system, application scenarios, current limitations and potential costs. Furthermore, we present the potential of hybrid drive solutions for the future design of interference-resistant, fast-response, all-weather desalination systems. This Review aims to provide guidance for the development of high-performance solar desalination integrated devices and their large-scale industrial applications.

Salt-rejecting continuous passive solar thermal desalination via convective flow and thin-film condensation

Abstract:Passive solar desalination is an emerging low-cost technology for fresh water production. State of the art desalinators typically evaporate water using wicking structures to achieve high solar-to-vapor efficiency by minimizing heat loss. However, wicking structures cannot reject salt continuously which limits the operating duration of the desalinators to several hours before the devices are turned off to reject salt. While significant research has focused on developing efficient evaporators to achieve high solar-to-vapor efficiency, inefficient condensers have become the bottleneck for the overall solar-to-water efficiency. To overcome these challenges, we designed a passive inverted single stage solar membrane desalinator that achieves continuous desalination and salt rejection. By flowing salt water on a radiative absorbing, porous, hydrophobic evaporator membrane using gravity, salt continuously diffuses away from the membrane while allowing heated water vapor to transport to and condense on a cooler microporous membrane below. Our design utilizes thin-film condensation on a microporous membrane which offers ample three-phase contact region to enhance condensation phase change heat transfer. By condensing within the microporous membrane, we reduce the gap distance between the condenser and evaporator membranes, which reduces the vapor transport resistance. We experimentally demonstrated a record-high continuous desalination and salt rejection test duration of 7 days under one-sun. Despite an increased convection heat loss necessary for salt rejection on the evaporator, our desalinator still achieved a water-collection rate of 0.487 $kg$ $m^{-2}h^{-1}$, which corresponds to a 32.2% solar-to-water efficiency. This work signifies an improvement in the robustness of current state of the art desalinators and presents a new architecture to further optimize passive solar desalinators.

Abstract:Solar-driven desalination systems have been recognized as an effective technology to address the water crisis. Recently, evaporators prepared based on advanced manufacturing technologies have emerged as a promising tool in enhancing ocean energy utilization. In this review, we discussed the thermal conversion, energy flow, salt deposition mechanisms, and design strategies for solar-driven desalination systems, and explored how to improve the desalination performance and energy use efficiency of the systems through advanced manufacturing technologies. In future perspectives, we determined the feasibility of coupling solar-driven solar desalination systems with multi-stage energy utilization systems and emerging artificial intelligence technologies, for which conclusions are given and new directions for future desalination system development are envisioned. Finally, exciting opportunities and challenges in the face of basic research and practical implementation are discussed, providing promising solutions and blueprints for green and novel desalination technologies while achieving sustainable development.

Abstract:The shortage of freshwater is becoming a major threat to sustainable environmental development. Water desalination techniques provide solutions for freshwater requirements. Solar energy is considered as a plentiful and effortlessly available renewable energy. Desalination with solar energy is a suitable technique to convert brackish water into fresh water and that has received greater attention. The traditional desalination processes require a substantial quantity of energy, and with an extensive investigation of different methods of desalination, frameworks have experimented in the most recent couple of decades. The different types of desalination techniques using solar energy with exergy analysis are studied and presented in this review paper. The exergy performance cost affecting factors and the economic feasibility of several desalination plants such as solar stills, humidification and dehumidification, multi-effect distillation, reverse osmosis, and multi-stage flash desalination techniques are studied and reported in this paper. The present study revealed that the desalination of water using solar energy as an efficient as well as a cost-effective method as compared desalination of water with other energy sources.

Abstract:The lack of fresh water resources is attracting concern worldwide. Recently, to address this global issue, researchers proposed the heat localization concept for interfacial solar seawater desalination in 2014. Since then, interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) devices have attracted much attention, due to their potential for achieving highly enhanced optical‐thermal conversion through a single interface as compared with traditional solar seawater desalination. To date, the promising prospect of ISSG systems in seawater desalination has stimulated the rapid development of solar desalination technology based on heat localization. To comprehensively recognize ISSG devices and acquire more insights into their design associated with biological relevance, efficiency improvement, and applications, this review summarizes the progresses and prospects of ISSG devices in relation to the evolution of advanced materials, the engineering architecture, the collaborative application, and the current challenges.

Abstract:Seawater desalination is an important process to alleviate the freshwater crisis. However, traditional desalination techniques are typically energy-intensive and significantly contribute to the worldwide release of carbon dioxide. Additionally, desalination using fluctuating renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, heavily relies on external weather. In this context, harnessing ocean thermal gradient for desalination emerges as a promising alternative for achieving sustainable desalination. Because it is a natural thermal energy source with a continuous and stable supply, and is widely available in tropical regions where freshwater shortages are most pressing. Nowadays, ocean thermal desalination has been proven technically feasible, however traditional configurations face obstacles such as high-power consumption and low-performance ratio as narrow temperature differences. Therefore, this review comprehensively discusses optimization approaches for ocean thermal desalination in terms of structural enhancement and multi-energy complementarity to identify the direction of future development of the technology. The present state, impediments, and future outlook pertaining to ocean thermal desalination are also presented. Finally, the performance and cost-effectiveness of reviewed ocean thermal desalination processes are examined and compared with other desalination processes. This review highlights the potential of desalination using ocean thermal gradient and emphasizes that optimization strategies from multiple perspectives can significantly enhance system performance and enable sustainable desalination.

Abstract:Interfacial-heating solar desalination (IHSD), a sustainable and efficient method of harnessing solar energy to generate clean water, will contribute a meaningful technology to the ongoing freshwater scarcity. However, the salt management toward highly salinity brine (>10 wt%) and water production are still the bottlenecks of this technology. With the rapid development of this important field, many new strategies and designs have been developed most recently. Nevertheless, a comprehensive overview of the important progress on salt management of high-salinity brine and enhanced water production is yet lacking. In this review, we focus on the interfacial-heating solar desalination of high-salinity brine (>10 wt%) and the drinking water production. The representative strategies for salt management during solar desalination of high-salinity brine are highlighted and categorized into seven categories. The principles, comparative analysis and comparison for these different strategies are discussed. Subsequently, how to optimize the evaporator and condenser to boost water production is summarized. Finally, the challenges and future research opportunities for interfacial-heating solar desalination are described and proposed.

Abstract:Solar desalination has emerged as a sustainable solution for addressing global water scarcity in the energy-water nexus, particularly for remote areas in developing countries. How to use the light spectrum through solar devices can profoundly affect the solar energy utilization, desalination rates, off-grid applicability, and water affordability. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal (ST) respectively have enabled a variety of interesting solar desalination technologies, but the resulting applications usually limit the integration between solar and desalination to be either electrically or thermally connected. Here this review paper explores smart co-uses of heat and electricity from the sun to improve the efficiency, productivity, and independence of various solar desalination processes. It is found that coupling solar photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) with desalination could be a practical and immediately deployable route for plausibly more sustainable solar desalination than current solutions, because the combined electrical and thermal energy outputs from PVT panels could be used synergistically to catalyze the improvement on the solar energy efficiency, specific energy consumption, and specific water production, as well as the operational independence for off-grid applications. Our preliminary analysis indicated an up to 20 % lower cost of PVT-desalination than current solar PV-desalination and ST-desalination but also with challenges discussed.

Abstract:The exhaustion of clean water is a rising concern in terms of water scarcity and the water–energy nexus where photothermal desalination could solve the predicament. This review provides cognizance on solar‐to‐thermal conduction mechanisms, as well as water‐pumping and salt‐rejection, which is explained through capillary action. New‐generation nanostructures such as nanomembrane, Janus nanoarchitecture, and reticular materials could enable water purification. Photothermal interfacial evaporation (PTIE) draws the attention of researchers owing to its eco‐friendly approach of obtaining purified potable water from unusable seawater. The salience behind this technology ensures an indispensable commodity highly accessible via implementation of localized heating principles to vaporize seawater at water/air interface, instead of excessive energy consuming bulk‐water evaporating desalination systems. The significance of any technology depends on its component, and photothermal desalination technology lies on its material. In this review, focus on ultramodern nanomembranes, Janus nanoarchitectures, and reticular materials as promising solar–thermal nanostructures is highlighted. This report aims to inspire novel advancements in nanomaterials for photothermal desalination by providing cognizance into the mechanisms of photothermal conversion and principles of capillary action to construct innovative water pathway to continuously pump water with excellent salt‐rejecting feature, thereby enhancing PTIE performance. With desalination as the focus, insights into vapor condensation for the collection of desalinated water are discussed. Furthermore, reports on innovative solar‐driven water purification projects undertaken by different countries to be in action in the near future are incorporated. Eventually, this review sheds light on some practical outlook toward the optimization of judicious nanomaterials for a sustainable tomorrow.

Abstract:The scarcity of freshwater is becoming more pronounced due to the escalation of global warming and environmental pollution. Considering the enormous availability of seawater resources, maximizing the utilization of marine resources is imperative to address the issue at hand effectively. Solar desalination , with the advantages of safety, environmental preservation and energy efficiency, has become a research hotspot in freshwater acquisition applications. By optimizing light absorption, light-to-thermal conversion, thermal management, and water transport of the photothermal conversion materials, solar desalination configuration has made significant gains in evaporation rate and energy efficiency. However, the collection of clean water, one of the cores of solar desalination configuration, still suffers from significant flaws. In this review, we undertake a comprehensive analysis and detailed description of the prevailing solar evaporators , atypical evaporators, and the accompanying condensate collection mechanisms employed in the configuration of solar desalination. In addition, conventional single-stage solar desalination commonly employs two primary configurations: one-piece interface evaporation and separated interface evaporation. Finally, the unique multi-stage solar desalination configuration mainly revolves around separated photothermal and evaporative interfaces. Based on the aforementioned theoretical framework and extensive research, we further propose design strategies and concepts to enhance the efficiency of solar water purification . It is anticipated that the advancement of effective solar water desalination technology would address the serious situation of water shortage in actual society.

Abstract:<p>Solar‐driven interfacial desalination (SDID), which is based on localized heating and interfacial evaporation, provides an opportunity for developing environmentally friendly and cost‐effective seawater thermal desalination. However, localized heating and rapidly generated interfacial steam may cause salt to accumulate on the evaporator's surface and block the channel of steam evaporation. Salt accumulation inevitably reduces the light absorption and service period of the solar absorber, resulting in a significant decrease in evaporation efficiency over time. Salt accumulation makes it difficult to produce SDID devices with high energy efficiency and long‐term stability for large‐scale use in remote poverty‐stricken areas. Therefore, the exploration of novel and effective strategies for addressing salt accumulation through both material design and structural engineering has attracted more attention in recent years. This review presents an overview of the state‐of‐the‐art advancements in salt‐resistant photothermal evaporation and discusses the critical issues for achieving salt mitigation SDID, focusing on the classification of salt mitigation strategies based on photothermal evaporation configurations, the basic mechanism of salt mitigation, and the architectural design of photothermal materials. Finally, the important challenges and prospects of SDID are discussed to providing a meaningful roadmap to efficient salt mitigation SDID.</p>

Abstract:Solar desalination, a green, low-cost, and sustainable technology, offers a promising way to get clean water from seawater without relying on electricity and complex infrastructures. However, the main challenge faced in solar desalination is salt accumulation, either on the surface of or inside the solar evaporator, which can impair solar-to-vapor efficiency and even lead to the failure of the evaporator itself. While many ideas have been tried to address this ″salt accumulation″, scientists have not had a clear system for understanding what works best for the enhancement of salt-rejecting ability. Therein, for the first time, we classified the state-of-the-art salt-rejecting designs into isolation strategy (isolating the solar evaporator from brine), dilution strategy (diluting the concentrated brine), and crystallization strategy (regulating the crystallization site into a tiny area). Through the specific equations presented, we have identified key parameters for each strategy and highlighted the corresponding improvements in the solar desalination performance. This Review provides a semiquantitative perspective on salt-rejecting designs and critical parameters for enhancing the salt-rejecting ability of dilution-based, isolation-based, and crystallization-based solar evaporators. Ultimately, this knowledge can help us create reliable solar desalination solutions to provide clean water from even the saltiest sources.
