Abstract:To develop solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPE), their poor ionic conductivity at ambient temperature has been considered as a main obstacle. In this study, a quasi-solid-state polymer electrolyte based on polyurethane (QSPE-PU) is fabricated and exhibits high ionic conductivity of 1.12×10−4 S cm−1 at ambient temperature by complexing high concentrated lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) salt and a small amount of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. Owing to the strong complexing between lithium ion and DMF, a small amount of DMF is in bound state and residual in the QSPE-PU, which acts as a plasticizer and greatly enhance the movement of the polymer segments. Besides, the bound-state DMF lowers the energy barrier of lithium-ion migration and promotes the dissolution of high concentrated lithium salt to provide more carriers, contributing to high ionic conductivity of this QSPE-PU. The concentration of LiTFSI and corresponding content of residual DMF in QSPE-PU are optimized through balancing transmission performance and mechanical properties. QSPE-PU also shows good compatibility with lithium metal, which is verified by testing symmetrical lithium battery. A quasi-solid-state LiFePO4/QSPE-PU/Li (LFP/QSPE-PU/Li) battery is assembled, exhibiting high specific capacity of ~138 mA h g−1 and remarkable cycling stability at 0.5 C, 30 °C (no capacity decrease after 500 cycles and 12% decrease after 1000 cycles). More impressively, LFP/QSPE-PU/Li pouch cell is assembled and delivers good flexibility and high safety. Such QSPE-PU is expected to provide a promising alternative for practical application in solid-state lithium batteries and even flexible batteries for next-generation wearable devices.
