Abstract:I must apologize for responding the comments so late. Comment 1: lines 8791. Chemical types of spring waters The authors classificate the sampled waters in 7 groups using the Shoka Levs classification method, but they don,t explain what are the principal water rock interaction processes generating these types of water. Looking at the data it seems that there are 3-4 main types of water while the other types are probably the result of mixing processes between the main types. A Piper or Langelier Ludwig diagram could show better the possible mixing processes. Furthermore a study of speciation-saturation indexes is needed. Thank you very much

Abstract:Speleothem records in southeastern China provide key evidence for past environmental changes. However, the climatic interpretation of these proxies has remained a great controversy. Earlier work interprets the cave δ18O signal associated with regional rainfall of the East Asia Summer Monsoon (EASM) or monsoon rainfall upstream of China. Recent isotope modeling supports the latter but show little correspondence between the precipitation δ18O and rainfall in China. Here, we examine the evolution of the climate and precipitation δ18O for the last 21,000 years in models and observations. Recognizing the regional difference of the EASM rainfall, we propose an interpretation of the Chinese δ18O record that reconciles its representativeness of EASM and its driving mechanism of upstream depletion. The δ18O records do represent the intensity of the EASM system. The monsoon intensity is best characterized by enhanced southerly monsoon winds, which correlate strongly with negative δ18O over China and enhanced monsoon rainfall in northern China, as well as the continental scale Asian monsoon rainfall response in the upstream regions.

Abstract:Chinese speleothems (cave deposits) preserve a remarkable paleoclimate record in their oxygen isotope ratios (δ 18 O); the precise interpretation of this record has been the subject of stimulating discussion. Most studies link the δ 18 O variability in Chinese speleothems to regional summer monsoon rainfall and/or rainfall integrated between tropical sources and cave sites. Discussion has centered on mechanisms behind this link as well as the location and seasonality of hypothesized rainfall changes. Until now, these hypotheses were not directly tested in speleothems because conventional drill sampling techniques are insufficient for measuring speleothem δ 18 O at seasonal resolution. Here we use an ion microprobe to analyze seasonal δ 18 O variability in an annually banded stalagmite from Kulishu Cave (northeastern China) that grew during the last deglaciation. The new seasonal resolution data show that the stalagmite δ 18 O values record two aspects of regional monsoon dynamics: (1) changes in the isotopic fractionation of water vapor sourced from both the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and (2) the annual proportion of summer monsoon rainfall, which was systematically greater during the Holocene and Bolling-Allerod than during the Younger Dryas. Both relate to regional rainfall; the isotopic fractionation changes also relate to rainfall integrated from tropical sources.

Abstract:Rashid et al. (2016) questioned the use of the Mg‐/Ca‐based sea surface temperature (SST) data from the subpolar North Atlantic Ocean as well as the alkenone‐based SST data from the western tropical Indian Ocean we used to reflect the winter SSTs or regional changes in the Holocene SSTs. We first would like to reemphasize that the main message we wanted to convey in our article is that the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) strength decreased and then increased again during the Holocene but with a substantial lag in southern China as compared to northern China. We, of course, wanted to back up our model results with published SST data that may have detected such an asynchronous variation in the EAWM. For convenience, we used a series of proxy records extracted from the extended Global database for alkenone‐derived HOlocene Sea‐surface Temperature (GHOST) database that were initially intended to provide a template of Holocene SST trends for model/data comparison purpose ( http://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.737370 ). Rashid et al. (2016) questioned our model/data comparison exercise, arguing that the data we present in Zhang et al. (2015a) cannot be used to track leads and lags in winter SSTs in the North Atlantic and northern Indian Ocean. Below we address point by point the issues raised by Rashid et al. (2016) and thank the authors for giving us the opportunity to sharpen our model/data comparison analysis.
New insights on Chinese cave δ18O records and their paleoclimatic significance

Abstract:In the last two decades, stalagmite oxygen isotope (δ18O) records have been widely used to study the evolution of the paleomonsoon. Nevertheless, interpreting cave δ18O records in eastern monsoonal China as an indicator of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall has been intensively debated. This study provides new insights into Chinese cave δ18O records and their paleoclimatic significance, based on recent research progress. The following points are highlighted: (1) Chinese cave δ18O records do not reflect changes in summer rainfall throughout the whole of eastern monsoonal China, which is evident by comparing monitored summer rainfall amount in eastern China and an integrated Chinese cave δ18Osyn proxy. (2) Chinese cave δ18O records can document millennial-scale EASM events, due to the sensitive response to large-scale atmospheric circulation changes. (3) During the early Holocene (before ~7 ka), a decoupled relationship between Chinese cave δ18O records and EASM rainfall (as represented by precipitation in North China) is attributed to the reduction of rainfall in North China, due to the influence of remnant melting ice sheets in the northern high-latitude region. (4) When the ice sheet boundary conditions were stable and ice sheets were small (after ~7 ka), there is an indirect correlation between the Chinese cave δ18O and rainfall changes in North China. (5) The first continuous speleothem δ18O record spanning the entire Holocene is synthesized for the core region of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM)-domain. Comparison of this integrated ISM proxy with Chinese cave δ18O records reveals that in China cave δ18O is primarily a signal of changes in the tropical monsoon and related large-scale circulation. The coupled relationship between rainfall in North China and tropical monsoon (ISM) rainfall is attributed to the response of downstream circulation to changes in circulation upstream, while their decoupled relationship is due to the possible effects of northern high-latitude ice sheets on reducing rainfall in North China. (6) Due to the imprecise definition of monsoon "intensity", we suggest that cave δ18O can be used as an EASM proxy, if monsoon intensity is defined by changes in atmospheric circulation.

Abstract:While Asian monsoon (AM) changes have been clearly captured in Chinese speleothem oxygen isotope (δ18O) records, the lack of glacial-interglacial variability in the records remains puzzling. Here, we report speleothem δ18O records from three locations along the trajectory of the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), a major branch of the AM, and characterize AM rainfall over the past 180,000 years. We have found that the records close to the monsoon moisture source show large glacial-interglacial variability, which then decreases landward. These changes likely reflect a stronger oxygen isotope fractionation associated with progressive rainout of AM moisture during glacial periods, possibly due to a larger temperature gradient and suppressed plant transpiration. We term this effect, which counteracts the forcing of glacial boundary conditions, the moisture transport pathway effect.

Abstract:The negative correlation between the local precipitation and speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ is used extensively in the study of monsoon variability. However, the correlation coefficient between them do not always pass the significance test, which makes it difficult to interpret the monsoon variability using speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ . In this study, regression analysis and corresponding significance test method are employed to investigate the relationship between the Asian summer monsoon circulation and speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ of Xiaobailong cave using CERA-20C, speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ of Xiaobailong cave, and precipitation and temperature data from 8 meteorological stations around the cave. Diagnostic results indicate that the speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ of Xiaobailong cave can reflect the variability of Asian summer monsoon circulation via the rainout effect from the nearest upstream sources to destination. The stronger (weaker) ASM circulation causes isotopically depleted (enriched) water vapor via enhancing (reducing) the Rayleigh distillation processes during the transport of water vapor from the northern Bay of Bengal and the northern South China Sea to the region around the cave. The lower (higher) isotope value in water vapor further leads to depleted (enriched) speleothem $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ of Xiaobailong cave. The numerical experiments using isotope-incorporated spectral model substantiate the key physical process revealed in the observational analysis. These results provide an efficient way for reconstructing the paleomonsoon circulation with $$ \delta^{18} {\text{O}} $$ in speleothems, ice cores, and tree ring cellulose.

Abstract:In their comment on our publication about the discovery of two hydrothermal events in the Linzizong Group (Huang et al., 2022), Zhao et al. question the reliability of our thermochronologic data and the existence of hydrothermal events experienced by these rocks. They argue that their field and microscopic observations, as well as paleomagnetic studies, indicate that the lower Linzizong volcanic rocks preserve primary igneous textures and paleomagnetic signals. In this reply, we address these issues raised by Zhao et al., provide more field evidence, and conduct additional analyses that show that their assertions are not supported. We emphasize that hydrothermal events related to magmatism and deformation have systematically induced resetting of thermochronologic, stable isotopic, and paleomagnetic records of the lower Linzizong Group in the Linzhou basin of southern Tibet.

Abstract:The 8.2 ka abrupt cooling event has been extensively studied, whereas the 7.2 ka event and their comparations rarely mentioned. Here, we present a high resolution (∼4 years) and precisely dated (±25 years) speleothem multi-proxy record from Zhangjia Cave (northern margin of Sichuan basin, China) spanning the 7.2 and 8.2 ka events within the transition of early to middle Holocene. The speleothem δ18O mainly reflects the dynamic facets of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) system, while its δ13C and trace elements ratios serve as an indicator of local hydrological conditions. Our results reveal intense dry conditions in southwest China during the 7.2 ka event, despite the 7.2 event was characterized by a relatively stronger monsoon compared to the 8.2 ka event. Furthermore, the hydrological conditions during the 7.2 ka event and the middle Holocene appear to exhibit “north flood and south drought” pattern when compared to different paleoclimate records in EASM domains, while it can be summarized as “spatially consistent drought” in the 8.2 ka event. These different hydrological conditions are a response to the weakening of the EASM, a phenomenon also observed in modern climatic observations and empirical simulations, which underpins our understanding that the speleothem δ18O variations are mainly dynamical manifestations of the EASM system, likely different with its thermodynamical appearances.

Abstract:Characterization of moisture origins is crucial to understanding hydroclimatic processes. Nevertheless, documenting past atmospheric moisture contents and their sources remains challenging partially due to insufficient moisture-tracing proxies. Here, we present triple oxygen isotope compositions in 21 cave speleothems from monsoonal Asia to examine spatial moisture origin differences in eastern Asia over the past 300 years. Our data suggest an isotopic equilibrium fractionation during speleothem formation, and thus parent water 17 O anomalies (Δ′ 17 O) values reconstructed from speleothems preserve information on moisture origins and recycling across space. Notably, speleothem Δ′ 17 O records exhibit a distinct geographical distribution, with low values in central-eastern and southern China, high values in northwestern and northern China, and relatively high values in the Yangtze River region. This spatial pattern underscores the diverse influence of different moisture sources regulated by regional hydrological circulation, and demonstrates the potential use of speleothem Δ′ 17 O in reconstructing the moisture cycle at spatial scales.
A 120-year seasonally resolved speleothem record of precipitation seasonality from southeastern China

Abstract:Speleothem oxygen isotope (delta O-18(s)) record as a climatic proxy in southeastern China is still in debate due to multifaceted influencing factors, a modern delta O-18(s) record, which can be calibrated or compared with observational data, is critical to explore the interpretation of delta O-18(s) proxy. Here we present a seasonally resolved delta O-18(s) record spanning the interval of 1898-2018 CE from Niubi Cave, Guangdong Province, southeastern China. A comparison between the Niubi delta O-18(s) and instrumental data reveals that the Niubi delta O-18(s) variability is primarily controlled by changes in precipitation seasonality modulated by El Nino-Southern Oscillation on interannual to interdecadal timescales. Higher (lower) delta O-18(s) values correspond to lower (higher) ratios of the East Asian summer monsoon/non-summer monsoon precipitation during the El Nino (La Nina) events associated with concomitant changes in the outgoing longwave radiation, wind field and Western Pacific Subtropical High. While similar to 73% historical drought events correlate to positive anomalies in Niubi delta O-18(s) values over the last 120 years, the rest of drought events associate with the negative delta O-18(s) anomalies. This observation suggests two different mechanisms for the drought events with more and less diminution of rainfall amount in the East Asian summer monsoon relative to the non-summer monsoon precipitation, respectively. Additionally, our Niubi delta O-18(s) record from southeastern China, together with other high-resolution speleothem and tree ring records, demonstrate a "tripole pattern" of summer precipitation during the last similar to 100 years in eastern China. Why Does Speleothem Δ 18 O Differ from Groundwater Δ 18 O in the Late Pleistocene? Insight from Modern Precipitation with Their Recharge Dynamics in the Northern Margin of the East Asian Summer Monsoon Region

Abstract:Both δ O in groundwater and speleothem are inherited from precipitation δ O, however, stalagmite δ O and groundwater δ O do not simultaneously agree with each other in the monsoon regions, especially in the late Pleistocene. The reason remains unclear due to the complex stable isotope systematics in the monsoon affected regions with their controlling factors as well as the possible different recharge dynamics of groundwater and drip water. In this study, we have collected 539 daily precipitation samples throughout 2015 from seven monitoring stations in Beijing, in the northern margin of the East Asian summer monsoon region. Stable isotopes (δ O and δ H) of these precipitation samples are investigated for the controlling factors of precipitation isotopes, e.g., moisture source, temperature (T), and precipitation amount (P) effects. The δ O values in the precipitation decrease from the south to the northwest, which is controlled by the monsoon from the south and continental moisture from the northwest. Consistently, the precipitation exhibits an apparent seasonal variation in δ O values. The P effect is significant during the monsoon season, especially when the precipitation events are greater than 5 mm and single moisture source is considered. In contrast, the T effect is significant, with a gradient of 0.4‰ per °C during the non-monsoon season. A Rayleigh distillation model indicates that the moisture source and residual vapor fraction are the two most important factors controlling the δ O precipitation patterns in a monsoon region, independent of temperature. Isotopes in groundwater in the late Pleistocene exhibit a significant T effect, implying that the monsoon might not reach Beijing when the groundwater was formed at that time. Furthermore, we highlighted the different recharge mechanisms of groundwater and drip water: lateral flow and direct vertical infiltration make diverse contributions of non-monsoon precipitations to the groundwater and drip water respectively, resulting in that speleothem δ O differ from groundwater δ O in the late Pleistocene.
Potential ENSO Effects on the Oxygen Isotope Composition of Modern Speleothems: Observations from Jiguan Cave, Central China

Abstract:Despite of the fast development of speleothem records, oxygen isotope (delta O-18), the main paleoclimatic proxy, remains complicated in climatic interpretation. Continuous cave monitoring is essential for understanding the response of stalagmite oxygen isotope to East Asian Summer Monsoon moisture transportation. We introduce a 7 years (2010-2016) study on oxygen isotope of atmospheric precipitation, cave drips and modern speleothems at Jiguan Cave, central China, located Chinese north-south divide where is sensitive to Asian Monsoon. The monitoring covered a whole ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) cycle, from El Nino in 2010 to La Nina in 2011 and recovered another El Nino in 2015. The precipitation delta O-18 shows obvious seasonality (negative in summer and positive in winter), but air temperature and rainfall amount are not primary controlling factors. The interannual delta O-18 of precipitation corresponds with ENSO variability, which means delta O-18 value is positive during El Nino event and vice versa. We used HYSPLIT (Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory) model to simulate the moisture transportation for rainy season in El Nino and La Nina years, and found the Pacific contributed over 50% moisture in El Nino years and the Indian Ocean was the predominant oceanic source in La Nina year. There is no seasonality in drips delta O-18 value, while the response to ENSO variability is evident on interannual scale. The stable negative delta O-18 of drips compared with precipitation indicate there is a threshold for infiltration, suggesting cave drips are recharged by summer heavy precipitation with light delta O-18 value, but it's the mixture of latest and former rainy precipitation that recharge drips in drought, which has been verified by simple infiltration model. We found the modern speleothems were precipitated under nonequilibrium fractionation during drought years, nevertheless, they can record the El Nino related delta O-18 positive anomaly. Overall, the modern speleothems can receive the precipitation delta O-18 signal transferred by drips, and our study offers significance for verification of Asian Summer Monsoon driving force and interpretation of stalagmite delta O-18.
Effect of Precipitation Seasonality on Annual Oxygen Isotopic Composition in the Area of Spring Persistent Rain in Southeastern China and Its Paleoclimatic Implication

Abstract:This study examines the seasonality of precipitation amount and δ18O over the monsoon region of China (MRC). We found that the precipitation amount associated with the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) in the spring persistent rain (SPR) region is equivalent to that of the nonsummer monsoon (NSM). The latter contributes ∼50 % to amount-weighted annual δ18O values, in contrast with other areas in the MRC, where the δ18O of annual precipitation is dominated by EASM precipitation. Interannual relationships between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index, simulated δ18O data from IsoGSM, and seasonal precipitation amount in the SPR region were also examined. We found that on interannual timescales, the seasonality of precipitation amount (EASM ∕ NSM ratio) was modulated by ENSO and primarily influences the variability of amount-weighted annual precipitation δ18O values in the SPR region, although integrated regional convection and moisture source and transport distance may also play subordinate roles. During El Niño (La Niña) phases, less (more) EASM and more (less) NSM precipitation leading to lower (higher) EASM ∕ NSM precipitation amount ratios results in higher (lower) amount-weighted annual precipitation δ18O values and, consequently, in higher (lower) speleothem δ18O values. Characterizing spatial differences in seasonal precipitation is, therefore, key to correctly interpreting speleothem δ18O records from the MRC.

Abstract:General Comments: This paper presents the simulations of the Asian dust with GEOSChem model. The main drawbacks of the original parameterization of the dust emission used in official GEOS-Chem are pointed out firstly, subsequently the authors make a lot of efforts to improve the dust emission scheme by revising parameters such as aerodynamic roughness length, soil texture, and sandblasting efficiency. The simulated spatial and temporal variations of dust aerosols are found much closer to observations with the revised GEOS-chem model. General speaking, the manuscript is scientifically sound and well organized. I recommend accepting it after addressing the following comments. Major comments: 1) I suppose you are using a nested version of GOESChem with higher model resolution over your target region East Asia. Are there any interactions between the global simulation and the nested region? Please clarify this.

Abstract:We present a highly resolved oxygen isotope (δ18O) record of the penultimate glacial-interglacial transition from a 230Th-dated stalagmite (SD1) from the Shangxiaofeng Cave in north-eastern China. Our δ18O record reveals two prominent features. First, the SD1 δ18O record documents a brief increase of δ18O between 128.5 and 128.1 ka BP. Though this event has been identified in several marine records, our radiogenic dated record precisely constraints the timing and duration of the climate deterioration suggesting that this YD-like event is likely an intrinsic feature of climate change during the ice age terminations. Additionally, the δ18O magnitude of the glacial-interglacial change (∼0.7‰) is significantly smaller compared to the δ18O records from inland and relatively high elevation caves (Dongge, Sanbao and Yangkou caves) (1.4–2.4‰) but comparable to the Hulu Cave at low elevation and proximal to the shallow Bohai and Yellow seas (Kelly et al., 2006; Cheng et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2008; Cheng et al., 2009; Li et al., 2014). Assuming that the cave δ18O records mainly reflect precipitation isotope composition changes, the glacial-interglacial speleothem δ18O difference between the various Chinese caves could be related to changes in atmospheric circulations, changing effect of altitude between the various caves and climate mean states, and large-scale changes in regional land-sea coverage due to sea level changes. The latter leads to disappearance and expansion of Bohai and Yellow seas during glacial and interglacial episodes, respectively, and likely affect the amount and isotope composition of precipitation. Taken together, our study highlights that hydroclimate imprints of the East Asian Monsoon changes during the penultimate glacial-interglacial cycle were spatially heterogeneous and centennial-scale monsoonal hydroclimate instabilities are likely inherent features of deglacial climate transition.
