Abstract:Remarkable enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (T c) has been observed for monolayer (ML) FeSe films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. The atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface is an important determinant of both the magnetic and interfacial electron-phonon interactions and is a key ingredient to understanding its high-T c superconductivity. We resolve the atomic-scale structure of the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface through a complementary analysis of scanning transmission electron microscopy and in situ surface x-ray diffraction. We find that the interface is more strongly bonded for a particular registration, which leads to a coherently strained ML. We also determine structural parameters, such as the distance between ML FeSe and the oxide, Se─Fe─Se bond angles, layer-resolved distances between Fe─Se, and registry of the FeSe lattice relative to the oxide. This picoscale structure determination provides an explicit structural framework and constraint for theoretical approaches addressing the high-T c mechanism in FeSe/SrTiO3.

Abstract:The interplay of different electronic phases underlies the physics of unconventional superconductors. One of the most intriguing examples is a high-Tc superconductor FeTe1-xSex: it undergoes both a topological transition, linked to the electronic band inversion, and an electronic nematic phase transition, associated with rotation symmetry breaking, around the same critical composition xc where superconducting Tc peaks. At this regime, nematic fluctuations and symmetry-breaking strain could have an enormous impact, but this is yet to be fully explored. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we study the electronic nematic transition in FeTe1-xSex as a function of composition. Near xc, we reveal the emergence of electronic nematicity in nanoscale regions. Interestingly, we discover that superconductivity is drastically suppressed in areas where static nematic order is the strongest. By analyzing atomic displacement in STM topographs, we find that small anisotropic strain can give rise to these strongly nematic localized regions. Our experiments reveal a tendency of FeTe1-xSex near x 0.45 to form puddles hosting static nematic order, suggestive of nematic fluctuations pinned by structural inhomogeneity, and demonstrate a pronounced effect of anisotropic strain on superconductivity in this regime.
Ubiquitous Strong Electron–phonon Coupling at the Interface of FeSe/SrTiO3

Abstract:The observation of replica bands in single-unit-cell FeSe on SrTiO3 (STO)(001) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has led to the conjecture that the coupling between FeSe electrons and the STO phonons are responsible for the enhancement of Tc over other FeSe-based superconductors. However the recent observation of a similar superconducting gap in single-unit-cell FeSe/STO(110) raised the question of whether a similar mechanism applies. Here we report the ARPES study of the electronic structure of FeSe/STO(110). Similar to the results in FeSe/STO(001), clear replica bands are observed. We also present a comparative study of STO(001) and STO(110) bare surfaces, and observe similar replica bands separated by approximately the same energy, indicating this coupling is a generic feature of the STO surfaces and interfaces. Our findings suggest that the large superconducting gaps observed in FeSe films grown on different STO surface terminations are likely enhanced by a common mechanism.
Capping Layer Influence and Isotropic In-Plane Upper Critical Field of the Superconductivity at the FeSe/SrTiO3 Interface

Abstract:Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (Tc) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magneto-transport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers that provide distinctly different charge transfer into FeSe: compound FeTe, non-metallic Te, and metallic Zr. Our results show that FeTe provides an optimal cap that barely influences the inherent Tc found in pristine FeSe/SrTiO3, while the transfer of holes from a non-metallic Te cap completely suppresses superconductivity and leads to insulating behavior. Finally, we used ex situ magnetoresistance measurements in FeTe-capped FeSe films to extract the angular dependence of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field. Our observations reveal an almost isotropic in-plane upper critical field, providing insight into the symmetry and pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity in FeSe.
Incommensurate Smectic Phase in Close Proximity to the High-T C Superconductor FeSe/SrTiO3

Abstract:Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO 3 , but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists and gradually fades away with increasing film thickness, while it suddenly vanishes in monolayer FeSe, indicative of an abrupt smectic phase transition. Surface alkali-metal doping can suppress the smectic phase and induce high- T c superconductivity in bilayer FeSe. Our observations provide evidence that the monolayer FeSe is in close proximity to the smectic phase, and its superconductivity is likely enhanced by this electronic instability as well.

Abstract:The clustering of xerophthalmia in villages and in households was assessed among preschool children surveyed in the Lower Shire Valley, Malawi, and in Aceh province, Indonesia. Trachoma clustering was similarly assessed among the same children in Malawi. Trachoma clustered much more than xerophthalmia among villages and among households. The impact of xerophthalmia clustering on sample size considerations for future surveys or interventions was similar in Malawi and Indonesia. Village clustering of xerophthalmia would necessitate a twofold increase in sample size. Household clustering in the absence of village clustering would have almost no impact on sample size. Village clustering of trachoma would necessitate a ninefold increase in sample size. Household clustering would increase sample size requirements by 26%.

Abstract:The interface between transition metal compounds provides a rich playground for emergent phenomena. Recently, significantly enhanced superconductivity has been reported for single-layer FeSe on Nb-doped SrTiO 3 substrate. Yet it remains mysterious how the interface affects the superconductivity. Here we use in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate various FeSe-based heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy, and uncover that electronic correlations and superconducting gap-closing temperature ( T g ) are tuned by interfacial effects. T g up to 75 K is observed in extremely tensile-strained single-layer FeSe on Nb-doped BaTiO 3 , which sets a record high pairing temperature for both Fe-based superconductor and monolayer-thick films, providing a promising prospect on realizing more cost-effective superconducting device. Moreover, our results exclude the direct correlation between superconductivity and tensile strain or the energy of an interfacial phonon mode, and highlight the critical and non-trivial role of FeSe/oxide interface on the high T g , which provides new clues for understanding its origin.

Abstract:The discovery of high temperature superconductivity in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 provides a new platform for exploring superconductivity and pursuing higher Tc (superconducting transition temperature) through fabricating artificial heterostructures. In this paper, we review the recent progress in studying and tuning the interfacial superconductivity in single-layer FeSe, through the combined in-situ spectroscopic studies and atomic-scale engineering. By fabricating artificial heterostructures, various interfacial factors were tuned, and the corresponding evolutions of electronic structure and superconducting gap behavior were investigated. These studies enrich the current understanding on the interfacial superconductivity, and provide clues for further enhancing Tc through interface engineering.

Abstract:Single-layer FeSe film on SrTiO 3 (001) has recently come to the fore as an interfacial superconducting system, with a transition temperature that is significantly enhanced with respect to bulk FeSe. The mechanism for this enhancement, and indeed for the superconductivity itself, is therefore of great interest. Although the film has a simple Fermi surface topology, its pairing symmetry is unclear. By using low-temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy, we have systematically investigated the superconductivity of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO 3 films, and report a fully gapped tunnelling spectrum and magnetic vortex lattice in the film. Quasi-particle interference patterns reveal scatterings between and within the electron pockets, and put constraints on possible pairing symmetries. By introducing impurity atoms onto the sample, we show that magnetic impurities such as Cr and Mn can locally suppress the superconductivity, but non-magnetic impurities (Zn, Ag and K) do not. Our results indicate that single-layer FeSe/SrTiO 3 has a plain s -wave pairing symmetry, with an order parameter that has the same phase on all Fermi surface sections.

Abstract:The record superconducting transition temperature ( T c ) for the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS) has long been 56 K. Recently, in single-layer FeSe films grown on SrTiO 3 substrates, indications of a new record of 65 K have been reported. Using in situ photoemission measurements, we substantiate the presence of spin density waves (SDWs) in FeSe films—a key ingredient of Fe-HTS that was missed in FeSe before—and we find that this weakens with increased thickness or reduced strain. We demonstrate that the superconductivity occurs when the electrons transferred from the oxygen-vacant substrate suppress the otherwise pronounced SDWs in single-layer FeSe. Beyond providing a comprehensive understanding of FeSe films and directions to further enhance its T c , we map out the phase diagram of FeSe as a function of lattice constant, which contains all the essential physics of Fe-HTS. With the simplest structure, cleanest composition and single tuning parameter, monolayer FeSe is an ideal system for testing theories of Fe-HTS.

Abstract:We determine the surface reconstruction of SrTiO3 used to achieve superconducting FeSe films in experiments, which is different from the 1 x 1 TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 assumed by most previous theoretical studies. In particular, we identify the existence of a double TiO2 layer at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface that plays two important roles. First, it facilitates the epitaxial growth of FeSe. Second, ab initio calculations reveal a strong tendency for electrons to transfer from an oxygen deficient SrTiO3 surface to FeSe when the double TiO2 layer is present. The double layer helps to remove the hole pocket in the FeSe at the Gamma point of the Brillouin zone and leads to a band structure characteristic of superconducting samples. The characterization of the interface structure presented here is a key step towards the resolution of many open questions about this superconductor.

Atomic-site dependent pairing gap in monolayer FeSe/SrTiO$_3$(001)- ($\sqrt{13} \times \sqrt{13}$)

Abstract:The interfacial FeSe/TiO$_{2-\delta}$ coupling induces high-temperature superconductivity in monolayer FeSe films. Using cryogenic atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we obtained atomic-site dependent surface density of states, work function, and pairing gap in the monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$(001)-($\sqrt{13} \times \sqrt{13}$)-33.7$°$ surface. Our results disclosed the out-of-plane Se-Fe-Se triple layer gradient variation, switched DOS for Fe sites on and off TiO$_{5\square}$, and inequivalent Fe sublattices, which gives global spatial modulation of pairing gap contaminant with the ($\sqrt{13} \times \sqrt{13}$) pattern. Moreover, the coherent lattice coupling induces strong inversion asymmetry and in-plane anisotropy in the monolayer FeSe, which is demonstrated to correlate with the particle-hole asymmetry in coherence peaks. The strong atomic-scale correlations in lattice and electronic structure, and pairing gap in particular, put constraints on exploring the unconventional high-temperature superconductivity emerging from interface coupling, e.g., strong demand for atomic-scale interface engineering and characterization.

High-temperature superconductivity in one-unit-cell FeSe films

Abstract:Since the dramatic interface enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) was reported in one unit-cell FeSe film grown on SrTiO3 substrate (1-UC FeSe/STO) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), related research on this system has become a new frontier in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we present a brief review on this rapidly developing field, mainly focusing on the superconducting properties of 1-UC FeSe/STO. Experimental evidences for the high-temperature superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe/STO, including the direct evidences revealed by transport and diamagnetic measurements, and other evidences from scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), are overviewed. Potential mechanisms of the enhanced superconductivity are discussed. There are accumulating arguments suggesting that the strengthened Cooper pairing in 1-UC FeSe/STO originates from the interface effects, specifically charge transfer and coupling to phonon modes in TiO2 plane. The study of superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe/STO not only sheds a new light on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductors with layered structures, but also provides the insight to explore new superconductors by interface engineering.

High T_c Superconductivity at the FeSe/SrTiO_3 Interface

Abstract:In a recent experiment the superconducting gap of a single unit cell thick FeSe film on SrTiO_3 substrate is observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The value of the superconducting gap is much larger than that of the bulk FeSe under ambient pressure. In this paper we study the effects of screening due to the ferroelectric phonons on Cooper pairing. We conclude it can significantly enhance the energy scale of Cooper pairing and even change the pairing symmetry. Our results also raise some concerns on whether phonons can be completely ignored for bulk iron-based superconductors.

Abstract:Abstract In single unit-cell FeSe grown on SrTiO 3 , the superconductivity transition temperature features a significant enhancement. Local phonon modes at the interface associated with electron-phonon coupling may play an important role in the interface-induced enhancement. However, such phonon modes have eluded direct experimental observations. The complicated atomic structure of the interface brings challenges to obtain the accurate structure-phonon relation knowledge. Here, we achieve direct characterizations of atomic structure and phonon modes at the FeSe/SrTiO 3 interface with atomically resolved imaging and electron energy loss spectroscopy in an electron microscope. We find several phonon modes highly localized (~1.3 nm) at the unique double layer Ti-O terminated interface, one of which (~ 83 meV) engages in strong interactions with the electrons in FeSe based on ab initio calculations. This finding of the localized interfacial phonon associated with strong electron-phonon coupling provides new insights into understanding the origin of superconductivity enhancement at the FeSe/SrTiO 3 interface.

Abstract:The latest discovery of possible high-temperature superconductivity in the single-layer FeSe film grown on a SrTiO3 substrate has generated much attention. Initial work found that, while the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film exhibits a clear signature of superconductivity, the double-layer film shows an insulating behaviour. Such a marked layer-dependent difference is surprising and the underlying origin remains unclear. Here we report a comparative angle-resolved photoemission study between the single-layer and double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films annealed in vacuum. We find that, different from the single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film, the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film is hard to get doped and remains in the semiconducting/insulating state under an extensive annealing condition. Such a behaviour originates from the much reduced doping efficiency in the bottom FeSe layer of the double-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 film from the FeSe-SrTiO3 interface. These observations provide key insights in understanding the doping mechanism and the origin of superconductivity in the FeSe/SrTiO3 films.
