Abstract:Conserved quantities such as energy or the electric charge of a closed system, or the Runge-Lenz vector in Kepler dynamics are determined by its global, local, or accidental symmetries. They were instrumental to advances such as the prediction of neutrinos in the (inverse) beta decay process and the development of self-consistent approximate methods for isolated or thermal many-body systems. In contrast, little is known about conservation laws and their consequences in open systems. Recently, a special class of these systems, called parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems, has been intensely explored for their remarkable properties that are absent in their closed counterparts. A complete characterization and observation of conserved quantities in these systems and their consequences is still lacking. Here we present a complete set of conserved observables for a broad class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and experimentally demonstrate their properties using single-photon linear optical circuit. By simulating the dynamics of a four-site system across a fourth-order exceptional point, we measure its four conserved quantities and demonstrate their consequences. Our results spell out non-local conservation laws in non-unitary dynamics and provide key elements that will underpin self-consistent analysis of non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that are forthcoming.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry give rise to exceptional points (EPs) with exceptional properties that arise due to the coalescence of eigenvectors. Such systems have been extensively explored in the classical domain, where second- or higher-order EPs have been proposed or realized. In contrast, quantum information studies of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems have been confined to systems with a two-dimensional Hilbert space. Here, by using a single-photon interferometry setup, we simulate the quantum dynamics of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system across a fourth-order exceptional point. By tracking the coherent, nonunitary evolution of the density matrix of the system in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry unbroken and broken regions, we observe the entropy dynamics for both the entire system, and the gain and loss subsystems. Our setup is scalable to the higher-dimensional $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems, and our results point towards the rich dynamics and critical properties.

Abstract:We experimentally simulate nonunitary quantum dynamics using a single-photon interferometric network and study the information flow between a parity-time- (PT -)symmetric non-Hermitian system and its environment. We observe oscillations of quantum-state distinguishability and complete information retrieval in the PT-symmetry-unbroken regime. We then characterize in detail critical phenomena of the information flow near the exceptional point separating the PT-unbroken and PT-broken regimes, and demonstrate power-law behavior in key quantities such as the distinguishability and the recurrence time. We also reveal how the critical phenomena are affected by symmetry and initial conditions. Finally, introducing an ancilla as an environment and probing quantum entanglement between the system and the environment, we confirm that the observed information retrieval is induced by a finite-dimensional entanglement partner in the environment. Our work constitutes the first experimental characterization of critical phenomena in PT-symmetric nonunitary quantum dynamics.

Abstract:We experimentally study quantum Zeno effects in a parity-time (PT) symmetric cold atom gas periodically coupled to a reservoir. Based on the state-of-the-art control of inter-site couplings of atoms in a momentum lattice, we implement a synthetic two-level system with passive PT symmetry over two lattice sites, where an effective dissipation is introduced through repeated couplings to the rest of the lattice. Quantum Zeno (anti-Zeno) effects manifest in our experiment as the overall dissipation of the two-level system becoming suppressed (enhanced) with increasing coupling intensity or frequency. We demonstrate that quantum Zeno regimes exist in the broken PT symmetry phase, and are bounded by exceptional points separating the PT symmetric and PT broken phases, as well as by a discrete set of critical coupling frequencies. Our experiment establishes the connection between PT-symmetry-breaking transitions and quantum Zeno effects, and is extendable to higher dimensions or to interacting regimes, thanks to the flexible control with atoms in a momentum lattice.

Abstract:The recent experimental progress in parity-time (PT) symmetry has attracted great interest. However, compared with PT symmetry, there are only a few reported results on its counterpart, anti-PT symmetry, which would lead to new insights and applications. Experimentally simulating and demonstrating the properties of anti-PT symmetry is of particular interest. Here, we present experimental research for simulating the dynamics of bosonic Bogoliubov quasi-particles with anti-PT symmetry based on single photons generated from a point defect in a gallium nitride film. The dynamical evolution under a non-unitary operator is a continuous complex Lorentz transformation in a complex Minkowski space. The evolved states are located on hyperbolic curves, depending on the values of the new defined inner product, which remain invariant during the evolution. Three types of state, space-like, light-like, and time-like, which are analogous to those predicted by the special relativity, are demonstrated. The results of our work could be helpful to investigate the dynamics of quasi-particles in diverse systems and promote deep understanding of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics in open systems.
Learning conservation laws in unknown quantum dynamics

Abstract:We present a learning algorithm for discovering conservation laws given as sums of geometrically local observables in quantum dynamics. This includes conserved quantities that arise from local and global symmetries in closed and open quantum many-body systems. The algorithm combines the classical shadow formalism for estimating expectation values of observable and data analysis techniques based on singular value decompositions and robust polynomial interpolation to discover all such conservation laws in unknown quantum dynamics with rigorous performance guarantees. Our method can be directly realized in quantum experiments, which we illustrate with numerical simulations, using closed and open quantum system dynamics in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-gauge theory and in many-body localized spin-chains.

Abstract:The algebraic formulation of discrete $P$ and $T$ space-time symmetries in terms of the Dirac algebra is shown to be flawed. This is corrected by relating these symmetries to fermion quantum numbers defined by a $Cl_{3,3}$ sub-algebra of the $Cl_{7,7}$ Clifford Unification algebra. A new {\it Conservation Law} is formulated to the effect that fermion decays and interactions conserve all seven quantum numbers defined by $Cl_{7,7}$. This can be applied in the design of high energy experiments and the qualitative interpretation of their results.

Abstract:Comprehensive study on parity-time (PT) symmetric systems demonstrates the novel properties and innovative application of non-Hermitian physics in recent years. In the quantum regime, PT symmetric physics exhibits unique quantum dynamical behaviors such as spontaneous state-distinguishability oscillation. However, the construction and control of a PT symmetric quantum system are still challenging, that and restrict the experimental investigation of PT symmetric quantum nature and application. In this Letter, we propose and construct a recycling-structure PT symmetric quantum simulator for the first time, which can effectively simulate the discrete-time dynamical process of a PT symmetric quantum system in both unbroken and broken phases, to be different from our previous work [J.-S. Tang, et al., Nat. Photonics 10, 642 (2016)]. We investigate the dynamical features of quantum state distinguishability based on the PT symmetric simulator. Our results demonstrate the novel PT symmetric quantum dynamics characterized by the periodical oscillation of state distinguishability in the unbroken phase, and the monotonic decay of that in the broken phase. This work also provides a practical experimental platform for the future intensive study of PT symmetric quantum dynamics.

Abstract:Construction of quantum analogs starting from classical stochastic processes have been previously introduced. In this paper, we generate a large class of self contained quantum extensions by symmetry operations. We show that the relaxation processes for different quantum extensions are different and that is supported by the measure of coherence, the the probability of reaching the equilibrium, decay of the domain walls and purity. However, the coherence measure based on the L1-norm does not capture the speed of the relaxation process. We also show that the finite size scaling of coherence exists for both short and long times.

Conservation Laws For Every Quantum Measurement Outcome

Abstract:In the paradigmatic example of quantum measurements, whenever one measures a system which starts in a superposition of two states of a conserved quantity, it jumps to one of the two states, implying different final values for the quantity that should have been conserved. The standard law of conservation for quantum mechanics handles this jump by stating only that the total distribution of the conserved quantity over repeated measurements is unchanged, but states nothing about individual cases. Here however we show that one can go beyond this and have conservation in each individual instance. We made our arguments in the case of angular momentum of a particle on a circle, where many technicalities simplify, and bring arguments to show that this holds in full generality. Hence we argue that the conservation law in quantum mechanics should be rewritten, to go beyond its hitherto statistical formulation, to state that the total of a conserved quantity is unchanged in every individual measurement outcome. As a further crucial element, we show that conservation can be localised at the level of the system of interest and its relevant frame of reference, and is independent on any assumptions on the distribution of the conserved quantity over the entire universe.

Abstract:We construct Lie point symmetries, a closed-form solution and conservation laws using a non-Noetherian approach for a specific case of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation that has been recast for the study of non-relativistic free particles in a thermal reservoir environment. Conservation laws are constructed subsequently using the Ibragimov method via a solution to the adjoint form of the equation of motion via its corresponding scalaing symmetry. A general computational framework for obtaining all conserved vectors is exhibited some triplets of conserved quantities are calculated in full.

Efficient quantum pseudorandomness under conservation laws

Abstract:The efficiency of locally generating unitary designs, which capture statistical notions of quantum pseudorandomness, lies at the heart of wide-ranging areas in physics and quantum information technologies. While there are extensive potent methods and results for this problem, the evidently important setting where continuous symmetries or conservation laws (most notably U(1) and SU(d)) are involved is known to present fundamental difficulties. In particular, even the basic question of whether any local symmetric circuit can generate 2-designs efficiently (in time that grows at most polynomially in the system size) remains open with no circuit constructions provably known to do so, despite intensive efforts. In this work, we resolve this long-standing open problem for both U(1) and SU(d) symmetries by explicitly constructing local symmetric quantum circuits which we prove to converge to symmetric unitary 2-designs in polynomial time using a combination of representation theory, graph theory, and Markov chain methods. As a direct application, our constructions can be used to efficiently generate near-optimal random covariant quantum error-correcting codes, confirming a conjecture in [PRX Quantum 3, 020314 (2022)].

Abstract:Breaking symmetry with single spins The energetics of quantum systems are typically described by Hermitian Hamiltonians. The exploration of non-Hermitian physics in classical parity-time (PT)–symmetric systems has provided fertile theoretical and experimental ground to develop systems exhibiting exotic behavior. Wu et al. now demonstrate that non-Hermitian physics can be found in a solid-state quantum system. They developed a protocol, termed dilation, which transformed a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian into a Hermitian one. This allowed them to investigate PT-symmetric physics with a single nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. The results provide a starting point for exploiting and understanding the exotic properties of PT-symmetric Hamiltonians in quantum systems. Science , this issue p. 878

Abstract:A realistic quantum many-body system, characterized by a generic microscopic Hamiltonian, is accessible only through approximation methods. The mean field theories, as the simplest practices of approximation methods, commonly serve as a powerful tool, but unfortunately often violate the symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The conventional BCS theory, as an excellent mean field approach, violates the particle number conservation and completely erases quantumness characterized by concurrence and quantum discord between different modes. We restore the symmetry by using the projected BCS theory and the exact numerical solution and find that the lost quantumness is synchronously reestablished. We show that while entanglement remains unchanged with the particle numbers, quantum discord behaves as an extensive quantity with respect to the system size. Surprisingly, discord is hardly dependent on the interaction strengths. The new feature of discord offers promising applications in modern quantum technologies.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems satisfying parity-time (PT) symmetry have aroused considerable interest owing to their exotic features. Anti-PT symmetry is an important counterpart of the PT symmetry, and has been studied in various classical systems. Although a Hamiltonian with anti-PT symmetry only differs from its PT-symmetric counterpart in a global ±i phase, the information and energy exchange between systems and environment are different under them. It is also suggested theoretically that anti-PT symmetry is a useful concept in the context of quantum information storage with qubits coupled to a bosonic bath. So far, the observation of anti-PT symmetry in individual quantum systems remains elusive. Here, we implement an anti-PT-symmetric Hamiltonian of a single qubit in a single trapped ion by a designed microwave and optical control-pulse sequence. We characterize the anti-PTphase transition by mapping out the eigenvalues at different ratios between coupling strengths and dissipation rates. The full information of the quantum state is also obtained by quantum state tomography. Our work allows quantum simulation of genuine open-system feature of an anti-PT-symmetric system, which paves the way for utilizing non-Hermitian properties for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Conserved quantities are crucial in quantum physics. Here we discuss a general scenario of Hamiltonians. All the Hamiltonians within this scenario share a common conserved quantity form. For unitary parametrization processes, the characteristic operator of this scenario is analytically provided, as well as the corresponding quantum Fisher information (QFI). As the application of this scenario, we focus on two classes of Hamiltonians: su(2) category and canonical category. Several specific physical systems in these two categories are discussed in detail. Besides, we also calculate an alternative form of QFI in this scenario.

Determining equations for infinitesimal approximate symmetries of Ito and Stratonovich dynamical systems are derived. It shows how to derive conserved quantities for stochastic dynamical systems by using their symmetries without recourse to Noether's theorem.

Abstract:Discovering pragmatic and efficient approaches to construct $\varepsilon$-approximations of quantum operators such as real (imaginary) time-evolution propagators in terms of the basic quantum operations (gates) is challenging. Prior $\varepsilon$-approximations are invaluable, in that they enable the compilation of classical and quantum algorithm modeling of, e.g., dynamical and thermodynamic quantum properties. In parallel, symmetries are powerful tools concisely describing the fundamental laws of nature; the symmetric underpinnings of physical laws have consistently provided profound insights and substantially increased predictive power. In this work, we consider the interplay between the $\varepsilon$-approximate processes and the exact symmetries in a semicoherent context -- where measurements occur at each logical clock cycle. We draw inspiration from Pascual Jordan's groundbreaking formulation of nonassociative, but commutative, symmetric algebraic form. Our symmetrized formalism is then applied in various domains such as quantum random walks, real-time evolutions, variational algorithm ansatzes, and efficient entanglement verification. Our work paves the way for a deeper understanding and greater appreciation of how symmetries can be used to control quantum dynamics in settings where coherence is a limited resource.

Abstract:We study parity-time-symmetric non-Hermitian quantum systems at finite temperature, where the Boltzmann distribution law fails to hold. To characterize their abnormal physical properties, a new quantum statistics theory (the so-called quantum Liouvillian statistics theory) was developed, in which the Boltzmann distribution law was replaced by the Liouvillian-Boltzmann distribution law. Using it, we derived analytical results of thermodynamic properties for thermal PT systems and found that a "continuous" thermodynamic phase transition occurs at the exceptional point, where a zero-temperature anomaly exists.
