Abstract:Why Does the U.S. Always Seem to Run a Trade Deficit?The answer to this question lies in economic development that occurred in the early 1970s.The United Statesthe largest and most powerful economy after World War II-abandoned the gold standard in 1971, which led to the collapse of the Bretton Woods system.As a result, the U.S. dollar became the most widely used currency worldwide and the most popular foreign reserve along with U.S. government securities.In fact, foreign holdings of U.S. Treasury securities started to increase in the early 1970s.More than 40 years later, by 2014, these holdings surpassed $6 trillion, rising from about 3 percent of total U.S. government debt in 1970 to around 30 percent in recent years.

Abstract:After World War II, the dollar as the world currency of the international monetary and financial pattern formed. Bretton Woods system stipulates that the dollar and gold peg, other currencies and the dollar peg, which means that other currencies are decoupled from gold. Thus, in the gold standard era, the issuing country of other currencies to carry out international trade, are unable to trade in gold or local currency, can only be traded in dollars. To obtain dollars, one must first sell commodities to dollar holders, or borrow dollars from dollar holders. As a result, the global marketplace formed a network structure with the United States as the “server” and the liquidity of the U.S. dollar as the link. Although in 1973, the dollar and gold also decoupled, the Bretton Woods system disintegrated, but the United States as a “server” of the global market network has not been shaken, which is the main body of the current international monetary and financial pattern.

Abstract:Based on the monthly data about gold price from 2007 October to 2013 September,using multiple linear regression model to analysis the influential factors of the impact price of gold.Model results show the quite different conclusion toward the study on impact factors of the international price of gold in the post crisis era from the former scholars.The dollar index,American broad money supply and inflation rate consistent with USA hypotheses are the significant factors affect the price of gold.Whereas the USA federal funds rate,the Dow Jones industrial index and the price of oil are not remarkably influencing the price of gold.

Abstract:China's trade relations with the United States over the past four decades is a topic that has not been fully dealt with in scholarly works. This paper charts the course of US-China economic relations since 1971, explains the principal forces stimulating growth and encouraging change and, finally, discusses how these two economic giants fit into an interlocking Asian and world economy. In reaction to the post-2008 financial downturn, advocates for a new world economic order have suggested a rebalancing of global demand, which will arguably become a major, politically charged issue in the US and in China in the years to come. Growing economic interdependence has quickly presented new challenges and opportunities, with issues such as human rights, Most-Favoured-Nation status, the Taiwan and Tibet question, and the huge American trade deficit threatening to cloud the relationship at times. With China's emergence as a major power and America's hegemonic ambitions tested in successive wars, the contradiction between a booming commercial relationship and conflict associated with geopolitical and ideological differences will continue to constitute a serious challenge. The long-term goal for each side will be to forge economic ties strong enough to create a stable political relationship, rather than to be held hostage by geopolitical constraints.

Abstract:This paper delves into the status of the US dollar as a world reserve currency and its profound impact on China's economy. It emphasizes the significance of capital account convertibility for governments and advocates the necessity for reform in the international monetary system. The study sheds light on China's remarkable economic growth and its reliance on the US dollar, while also exploring the emergence of an alternative currency basket featuring the Chinese yuan (RMB). With the gradual depreciation of the US dollar on the horizon, the potential consequences for China's economy are thoroughly examined.Additionally, the paper addresses the risks associated with de-dollarization and the potential flight of USD-denominated debt to alternative assets like gold. A detailed analysis of how Trump's economic policies, especially the trade war with China, have impacted the global role of the US dollar is presented. Furthermore, the paper provides a comprehensive historical review of the international monetary system, spanning from the gold standard to the Bretton Woods system and the Jamaican system. It critically discusses the flaws and instability inherent in the current system, including issues related to currency over-issuance and the multi-currency reserve system.In conclusion, the paper examines the policy signals of the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury, along with the ramifications of Trump's economic policies on the US dollar and the global economy. The findings underscore the urgent need for measures to address the challenges posed by the current monetary system and its potential impact on China's economy. Abstract:States. Indeed, it has run a persistent trade deficit since the 1970s—but it also did throughout most of the 19th century. Figure 1 shows the U.S. goods trade balance as a percent of GDP (gross domestic product) from 1800 to 2018. From 1800-1870, the United States ran a trade deficit for all but three years and the trade balance averaged about –2.2 percent of GDP. Then from 1870-1970, it ran persistent trade surpluses that averaged about 1.1 percent of GDP. Starting in about 1970, the United States began to run trade deficits again, which have continued to this day. These shifts in the long-term U.S. trade balance appear to correspond well with U.S. industrialization in a global setting. Historically, industrialization has three phases: (i) the first industrial revolution features labor-intensive mass production, (ii) the second industrial revolution features capital-intensive mass production, and (iii) the welfare revolution features mass consumption in a financial services-oriented welfare state. We hypothesize that industrialization leads to structural changes that cause a nation’s comparative advantages to change relative to those of other nations. Abstract:Based on the thorough analysis of large amount of datum from the USGS(United State Geology Survey) and the WGC(World Gold Council),the authors put forward that gold in more than a kind of common mineral commodity.It is one of the best investments to resist the economic crisis.Gold industry developed steadily with increasing gold products in recent years.But the available gold reserves remained at about 1200 tons for some years.While gold reserve of China,compared to other countries and foreign exchange reserve of China,is rather low.So it is suggested that China should increase its gold reserve at appropriate times.Also the authors insists that gold exploration should be strengthen continuously to provide enough gold reserves for the healthy and stable development of gold industry of China.

Abstract:Today, world trade stands at a juncture. The proliferation of unconventional, unilateral trade policies calls into question the fundamental legitimacy of the World Trade Organization (WTO). To date, the global trading system evolved alongside a plethora of exogenous factors, such as the US-China competition. The political realities came to reveal the inadequacies of the existing trading regime to receive unique non-market economies (NMEs) like China in the world market. To better withstand the changes in world trade, the US resorted to unconventional, unilateral trade tactics. But how exactly did we get here? This study argues that the root cause can be found in the developments in US trade policy under each US presidency. The study’s findings demonstrate that the overarching goal of US trade policy has remained remarkably consistent across different presidencies in terms of countering the rise of China. Along the way, the incumbent president’s different priorities and political ideals, and the sustained impact of China’s accession to the WTO, induce profound changes in US-China relations and, at large, the world trading system. In short, this article aims to provide a policy-wise explanation to the current conundrum in world trade by following the developments in US trade policy since China’s accession to the WTO.

Abstract:Under conditions of financialization, finance capital develops relatively independently from the real economy of the United States. As a result, the United States has to rely heavily on external markets to buy consumer goods. The huge trade deficit of the United States stems from its own economic structure rather than external reasons. The trade deficit does not mean that the United States is in a disadvantageous position. From the perspective of the goods trade, service trade, and finance capital investment, the United States is in a position of absolute dominance with its service sector and profit from foreign investment. The launching of the USA–China trade war was a manifestation of Trump's protectionism. It has failed. It is hoped that the Biden administration will demonstrate learning from this mistake.

Abstract:Journal of Emerging Market Finance, Ahead of Print. In recent times, numerous commentaries have written about de- dollarization. We analyse the factors which are contributing to de- dollarization. On the economic front, there is reduced fiscal and financial capacity of the US economy that can strain economic trust in the dollar. The internationalization of the Chinese currency is another factor. Additionally, a lower forecast for the world economic growth outlook, a higher debt financing in the United States, and a war in Europe are also leading to central banks around the world buying more gold and reducing investment in the US treasury bonds. While these factors may lead to reduced demand for dollars and increase the use of alternate international currencies, including digital currencies, we argue that dislodging the dollar as a global anchor currency is at best going to be restricted by economic and geopolitical reasons.JEL Codes: E42, F33, F34

Abstract:There has been a serious asymmetry in Canadian-American economic relations, which results historically from three factors: former economic dependence in Canada's colonial age, dependence on the international market due to the natural-resource-export-orientated strategy for its industrialization, and demand on external capital for lack of primitive capital accumulation. Because of its own relative advantages in natural resources and market, Canada holds important influence and bargaining power in its interdependence relations with the U.S.; it can still insist on its economic autonomy in these relations. The establishment of the North American Free Trade Zone in the 1990s signals an obvious deepening of economic interdependence between the two countries. This is a way Canada chooses, but how to obtain its benefits while avoiding concurrent harms has still been a big challenge for itself.

Abstract:A content analysis was conducted to examine factors influencing investor behavior when investing in gold and to look into possible reasons for selling gold. The results showed that investors' needs, return expectations, herding behavior, fear of financial collapse, higher appreciation rate, store of value, and liquidity all significantly impact gold investment decisions. The analysis also identified factors that may lead to selling gold in times of crisis, such as uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, perception of gold as a safe haven during global financial instability, rise in the price of gold during crisis periods, its value as a hedging instrument, an essential investment source, protection against inflation, and also as a medium of exchange. An important motive for selling gold during these periods is to flee to safer assets. The research also revealed that although the demand for gold is usually higher in times of economic uncertainty and inflation, cash shortages do not significantly impact the decision to sell gold.

Abstract:This study reexamines the long-held view of gold as a universal safe haven during stock market downturns. Utilising a dataset from 1979 to 2020, we investigate the conditional nature of gold's safe-haven status with the S&P 500 index, revealing that the specific drivers of market declines determine the extent of gold's safe-haven status. Notably, gold's protective efficacy is pronounced during downturns specifically triggered by macroeconomic news but less evident in downturns triggered by other reasons. Our result challenges traditional perceptions and suggests investors adopt a contextual approach to identifying safe haven assets.

Abstract:Judging from the balance sheet of central bank, gold market operation also plays a role in the expansion or contraction of money supply. Since gold government bonds and foreign exchange are not the complete substitutes, central bank can combine the open market operation (both in government bonds market and foreign exchange market) with moderate gold market operation, which may lead to a more satisfactory monetary policy effect. Abstract:We show that the likelihood of a liquidity crunch in wholesale US dollar funding markets depends on levels of reserve balances at the financial institutions that are the most active intermediaries of these markets. Heightened risk of an imminent liquidity crunch is signaled by significant delays in intra-day payments to these large financial institutions over the prior two weeks. Our study contributes to the broader dialogue surrounding the Federal Reserve's ongoing quantitative tightening (QT).

Abstract:The currency market is a relative market, where one currency is priced in terms of another currency. As a consequence, currencies move relative to other currencies so that not all currencies can devalue at the same time. This creates a methodological challenge for measuring devaluations in the currency market as a whole, which may occur due to competitive devaluations, monetary policy coordination, contagion, or other reasons. For example, if there is a coordinated global reflationary policy, what measures the overall currency-market devaluation? In this paper, gold is treated as a currency to create a nominal anchor by which to measure currency-market devaluations, as all the other currencies can devalue relative to gold. In general, there have been three currency-market devaluations since the end of the Bretton Woods international monetary system: 89% between 1972 and 1980; 66% between 2005 and 2012; and 25% between 2019 and 2020.
