Abstract:The solar-driven coproduction of hydrogen (H-2) fuel and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives represents a promising strategy to address the energy and environment issues. Herein, the Ni-Au bimetal modified g-C3N4 photocatalyst was synthesized by a step-by-step photodeposition method and used to promote the photocatalytic coproduction of H-2 and furfural from furfural-alcohol aqueous solution. In the designed Ni Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst, g-C3N4 was the main light-harvesting material for generating electron-hole pairs which were separated efficiently by metal/g-C3N4 interface, plasmonic Au nanoparticles further increased the light utilization efficiency, and Ni acted as both electron trap and the active sites for H-2 evolution. Beneficial from the synergy of three components, the Ni-Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst exhibited 3-folds activity of Au/CN sample toward photocatalytic coproduction of H-2 and furfural. Both photoluminescence spectroscopy and photoelectrochemical measurements demonstrated the more efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers in Ni-Au/g-C3N4 photocatalyst. In situ electron spin resonance revealed the generations of hydroxyl radical and carbon center radical in the photocatalytic reaction. Based on the systematic characterizations, a photocatalytic mechanism was proposed and discussed. This work provides a rational construction of photocatalysts for coproduction of H-2 and value-added chemicals from biomass derivatives as well as explores the synergistic effect of bimetallic cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis. Abstract:The development of visible light responsive photocatalysts for simultaneous production of hydrogen (H-2) fuel and value-added chemicals is greatly promising to solve the energy and environmental issues by improving the utilization efficiency of solar energy. Herein, the three-component Ni/(Au@CdS) core-shell nanostructures were constructed by the hydrothermal synthesis followed with photodeposition. The intimate integration of plasmonic Au nanospheres and visible-light responsive CdS shells modified with Ni cocatalyst facilitated the generation and separation of electron-hole pairs as well as reduced the overpotential of hydrogen evolution. The Ni/(Au@CdS) photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance toward the selective transformation of benzyl alcohol under anaerobic conditions, and the yields of H-2 and benzaldehyde reached up to 3882 and 4242 mu mol.g(-1).h(,)(-1) respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was determined to be 4.09% under the irradiation of 420 nm. The systematic studies have verified the synergy of plasmonic effect and metal cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis. This work highlights the desirable design and potential application of plasmonic photocatalysts for solar-driven coproduction of H-2 fuel and high-value chemicals. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:For clean hydrogen (H2) production, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis are widely regarded as promising technologies to counter the increasing energy crisis. However, developing applicable catalysts with high H2 production performances still poses a challenge. In this review, state-of-the-art nanoscale electrocatalysts for water electrolysis and photocatalysts for water splitting, tailored for different reaction environments, including acidic electrolytes, alkaline electrolytes, pure water, seawater, and hydrohalic acids, are systematically presented. In particular, modification approaches such as doping, morphology control, heterojunction/homojunction construction, as well as the integration of cocatalysts and single atoms for efficient charge transfer and separation are examined. Furthermore, the unique properties of these upgraded catalysts and the mechanisms of promoted H2 production are also analyzed by elucidating the charge carrier dynamics revealed by photophysical and photoelectrochemical characterization methods. Finally, perspectives and outlooks on future developments for H2 production using advanced electrocatalysts and photocatalysts are proposed.

Abstract:The synergistic effects derived from optimizing the chemical and structural features of electrocatalysts permit them to attain remarkable activity and stability. Herein, 1D/2D cobalt‐based nanohybrid (CoNH) electrodes are developed; the structural design consists of Co3O4 electrospun nanoribbons (NRs) deposited onto a carbon fiber paper substrate where Co3O4 nanosheets are subsequently grown via an electrodeposition step and UV/ozone treatment. The content of noncovalently functionalized carbon nanotubes within the Co3O4 NRs is first tuned to enhance their charge transfer properties and mechanical stability. The electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes is further improved by a phosphorus modification of the 1D NRs, resulting in the formation of NaCoPO4. The optimized 1D/2D CoNH electrode, i.e., ED‐0.09 wt% fCNTs/P‐CoNHs, displays a similar performance to that of platinum in 0.25 m Na2S/0.35 m Na2SO3 (Tafel slope ≈102 mV dec−1 for the former and ≈96 mV dec−1 for the latter) and outstanding stability for up to 48 h. The versatility and high activity of this electrode is also demonstrated according to tests in a conventional water splitting system (cell voltage 1.55V, to produce 10 mA cm−2) and a solar‐driven electrolyzer (1 m KOH).

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production represents a very promising but challenging contribution to a clean, sustainable and renewable energy system. The photocatalyst material plays a key role in photocatalytic H2 production, and it has proven difficult to obtain corrosion resistant, chemically stable, visible light harvesting and highly efficient photocatalysts, which have their band edges matching the O2 and H2 production levels. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are opening a new vista in the development of highly active, nanostructured photocatalysts with large surface areas for optimized light absorption, minimized distances (or times) for charge-carrier transport, and further favorable properties. Our focus here is on recently developed nanostructured photocatalysts. In particular, the particle size, chemical composition (including dopants), microstructure, crystal phase, morphology, surface modification, bandgap and flat-band potential of the nanophotocatalysts have shown a visible effect on photocatalytic H2 production rates, which may be further increased by adding sensitizers, cocatalysts or scavengers. Finally, potential directions required to push this research field a step further are highlighted.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy could be economic and powerful technologies for sustainable future. Producing hydrogen fuel by electrochemical water splitting has attracted intense interest. Due their physical and chemical properties, two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have sparked immense interest in water electrocatalysis for hydrogen production. This review focuses on the emerging nanocatalysts in 2D nanoarchitectures for electrocatalytic hydrogen production. The fundamentals of HER are firstly depicted, following the discussion of recent advances in typical 2D electrocatalysts for HER. The insights into the relationship among the synthetic protocols, structure, catalytic performance and thermodynamics will be discussed in details. Finally, the outlook regarding further development of 2D nanocatalysts in HER are proposed. We hope this review will offer a comprehensive understanding in 2D nanocatalysts to promote electrochemical hydrogen production.

Abstract:Water electrolysis has been recognized as a promising technology that can convert renewable energy into hydrogen for storage and utilization. The superior activity and low cost of catalysis are key factors in promoting the industrialization of water electrolysis. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted attention due to their ultra-high atomic utilization, clear structure, and highest hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. In addition, the performance and stability of single-atom (SA) substrates are crucial, and various two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial supports have become promising foundations for SA due to their unique exposed surfaces, diverse elemental compositions, and flexible electronic structures, to drive single atoms to reach performance limits. The SA supported by 2D nanomaterials exhibits various electronic interactions and synergistic effects, all of which need to be comprehensively summarized. This article aims to organize and discuss the progress of 2D nanomaterial single-atom supports in enhancing HER, including common and widely used synthesis methods, advanced characterization techniques, different types of 2D supports, and the correlation between structural hydrogen evolution performance. Finally, the latest understanding of 2D nanomaterial supports was proposed.

Abstract:Modern civilization has been highly suffering from energy crisis and environmental pollutions. These two burning issues are directly and indirectly created from fossil fuel consumption and uncontrolled industrialization. The above critical issue can be solved through the proper utilization of green energy sources where no greenhouse gases will be generated upon burning of such materials. Hydrogen is the most eligible candidate for this purpose. Among various methods of hydrogen generation, electrocatalytic process is one of the most efficient methods because of easy handling and high efficiency. In these aspects Co-based nanomaterials are considered to be extremely significant as they can be utilized as efficient, recyclable and ideal catalytic system. In this article a series of Co-based nano-electrocatalysts has been discussed with proper structure-property relationship and their medium dependency. Therefore, such type of stimulating summary on recently reported electrocatalysts and their activity may be helpful for scientists of the corresponding field as well as for broader research communities. This can be inspiration for materials researchers to fabricate active catalysts for the production of hydrogen gas in room temperature.

Abstract:Green hydrogen is a promising technology for sustainable energy production, with photocatalytic water splitting offering several advantages over wind/solar-powered water electrolysis. The focus of this review paper is on high-performance photocatalysts , which are key to improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production . First, the general principles of photocatalytic hydrogen production and the factors affecting photocatalytic performance are summarized. Then, the conventional semiconductor photocatalysts including methods to improve their catalytic activities are comprehensively reviewed, which is followed by a detailed discussion of representative nano-photocatalysts. The performance of photocatalysts is affected by various factors, such as optical absorption, separation and transport efficiency of photocarriers, and redox capacity. The entire process of photocatalytic hydrogen production can be optimized through methods such as element doping , cocatalyst location, morphology adjustment, and heterojunction construction. Finally, photocatalysts of different dimensions, along with the challenges and future research directions, are summarized based on comparisons of numerous studies. This review provides a quick start guide for investigating the application of high-performance photocatalysts in green hydrogen production from photocatalytic hydrolysis, and offers insight into the latest advancements in photochemical conversion efficiency. It also provides a valuable reference for selecting nanomaterials and optimizing photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Self‐Limited Formation of Nanoporous Nickel Heterostructure Catalyst for Electrochemical Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Air‐stable nanostructured Ni‐based catalysts are fabricated by a protocol that employs chemical dealloying to establish a 3D bicontinuous nanoporous structure, followed by a controlled oxidation process to in situ generate uniform NiO surface layers atop the nickel matrix in a self‐limiting manner. Reinforced by Ni‐NiO co‐catalysis and improved access to intensified active sites, the nanoporous Ni/NiO heterostructure catalysts exhibit exceptional activity toward electrochemical hydrogen production. Nickel has risen as a viable and cost‐effective substitute to noble metal catalysts in electrochemical hydrogen production, yet developing air‐stable and highly efficient nanostructured nickel‐based catalysts remains a significant challenge. Here a facile method for creating nanoporous Ni/NiO heterostructure catalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen production is reported. The protocol employs chemical dealloying to establish a 3D bicontinuous nanoporous structure, followed by a controlled oxidation process to in situ generate uniform NiO surface layers atop the metallic nickel matrix in a self‐limiting manner. This approach not only yields highly active nickel‐based catalysts through a simple and controlled procedure but also effectively mitigates the auto‐ignition issue inherent in nanosized Ni, thereby enhancing air stability. By leveraging the synergistic interaction between Ni‐NiO co‐catalysis and improved access to intensified active sites, the electrocatalysts exhibit superior performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction, markedly outperforming noble Pt/C catalysts, and high stability in alkaline environments. The exploration of self‐limiting oxidation in nanostructured transition metals opens new avenues for developing advanced metal/oxide heterostructure catalysts for diverse energy applications.

Abstract:The over-dependence on fossil fuels is one of the critical issues to be addressed for combating greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen, one of the promising alternatives to fossil fuels, is renewable, carbon-free, and non-polluting gas. The complete utilization of hydrogen in every sector ranging from small to large scale could hugely benefit in mitigating climate change. One of the key aspects of the hydrogen sector is its production via cost-effective and safe ways. Electrolysis and photocatalysis are well-known processes for hydrogen production and their efficiency relies on electrocatalysts, which are generally noble metals. The usage of noble metals as catalysts makes these processes costly and their scarcity is also a limiting factor. Metal nitrides and their porous counterparts have drawn considerable attention from researchers due to their good promise for hydrogen production. Their properties such as active metal centres, nitrogen functionalities, and porous features such as surface area, pore-volume, and tunable pore size could play an important role in electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production. This review focuses on the recent developments in metal nitrides from their synthesis methods point of view. Much attention is given to the emergence of new synthesis techniques, methods, and processes of synthesizing the metal nitride nanostructures. The applications of electrochemical and photocatalytic hydrogen production are summarized. Overall, this review will provide useful information to researchers working in the field of metal nitrides and their application for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Hydrogen produced using renewable electricity is considered the key to achieving a low-carbon energy economy. However, the large-scale application of electrochemical water splitting for hydrogen evolution currently requires expensive platinum-based catalysts. Therefore, it is important to develop efficient and stable catalysts based on the rich reserves of transition metals as alternatives. In this study, the authors prepare a carbon-nanotube material enriched with atomically dispersed CoN sites having uniquely low coordination numbers via the simple mixing, pyrolysis, and leaching of inexpensive precursors. These atomically dispersed low-coordinate CoN sites provide an overpotential of only 82 mV at 10 mA cm-2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under challenging acidic conditions and show excellent durability in accelerated stability tests. Theoretical simulations also confirm that these unique, low-coordinate CoN2 sites have lower energy barriers in catalyzing the HER than Fe/NiN2 sites and commonly reported CoN3 /N4 sites. Therefore, the method provides a new concept for the design of single-atom catalytic sites with low coordination numbers. It also serves to reduce the cost of hydrogen production in the future owing to the high catalytic activity, low cost, and scalable production process.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal safe and clean energy source, which can be produced by water splitting. The high overpotential of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the bottleneck issues for the practical application of water splitting, where high-efficiency electrocatalysts are thus usually required to accommodate and facilitate the reaction. In recent years, a rapid rise in the HER electrocatalysts has been witnessed, especially nanostructured materials. Noble metals are generally regarded as the most effective electrocatalysts for HER, while some other electrocatalysts based on non-noble transition metals, including alloys, chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides and nitrides, can even approach the HER efficiency of noble metal benchmarks. This paper mainly introduces the basic principles of the HER process, evaluates different categories of nanostructured electrocatalytic materials, providing guidance for the design and fabrication of nanostructured HER catalysts. Moreover, recent progress and future research directions regarding the performance of metallic nanostructured materials are also discussed.Graphic

Abstract:Development of low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts for hydrogen generation represents the significant challenge for realizing hydrogen economy. NiCo and nano-Pd loaded NiCo microfibers with high surface area has been successfully developed by electrospinning and following vacuum thermal treatment. Towards hydrogen generation, the catalyst exhibits efficient TOF as high as 350 and 680 mL min(-1) gcat(-1) for NiCo and nano-Pd loaded NiCo microfibers, providing superior performance compared with the most promising reported catalysts. Abstract:Exposure of specific crystallographic planes as catalyst surfaces has been reported to effectively affect the performance of noble metal cocatalysts used for photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. However, the performance of noble metals for hydrogen production in alkaline solutions is usually 2 orders of magnitude lower than that in acidic media because of the weak dissociative adsorption ability of noble metals to water molecules, which may greatly limit their applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this research we report a Pt-based composite cocatalyst (Ni(OH)2/PtNi nanocubes), designed by separating the dissociative sites of water molecules from active sites for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Compared with PtNi nanocube-loaded CdS, Ni(OH)2/PtNi nanocube-modified CdS exhibits a much higher photocatalytic performance for hydrogen production in alkaline solutions.
